Barium strontium titanate (Ba 1- x Sr x TiO 3 -BST) ceramics, where x = 0.05, 0.15, 0.25, and 0.35, was prepared via a solid-state reaction method. The lattice structures and morphologies of the ceramic samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy technologies. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the BST ceramics were characterized using a precision impedance analyzer and a ferroelectric polarization-electric field (P-E) hysteresis loop tester, respectively. The electrocaloric effect was indirectly calculated using the Maxwell relations and P-E loops as a function of temperature and electrical field, and also directly measured using a computer-controlled thermocouple and high-voltage power supply. An adiabatic temperature change of 1.82 K was procured, indicating a promising potential in the applications as cooling devices.

The high degree of modularity and miniaturization of nanoelectronic devices results in a significant increase in heat flux per unit area of electronic components. This can cause a rise in temperature, especially when used outdoors under direct sunlight conditions, which can negatively impact their operational stability and service life. Traditional radiators have limited effectiveness in outdoor sunlight conditions. Additionally, conventional heat sinks are often too large and heavy for miniature electronic devices. Therefore, finding an effective solution to cool electronics under sunlight conditions remains a challenge. Herein, we present an innovative solution to fabricate 3D-printed coolers for electronic devices based on the methyltrimethoxysilane/silica/cellulose nanofibers (MSC) ink. 3D printing technology enables the fabrication of radiative coolers with complex structures and efficient cooling performance as needed. The combination of CNFs and SiO₂ nanoparticles, coupled with the porous nature of the structure, enables the 3D-printed MSC scaffold to exhibit excellent solar reflectance and high mid-infrared (MIR) emissivity, thereby facilitating superior radiative cooling capabilities. During the daytime, it can efficiently reduce the temperature of electronic devices by 6.16 °C, thereby improving their operational efficiency and service life. Furthermore, the 3D-printed MSC scaffold exhibits superior mechanical properties due to the robust 3D frame structure formed by the ink components, which provides stability for the electronic device during operation. This study presents an innovative approach to developing electronic device coolers with excellent cooling performance, which is significant in promoting the reliability and stability of electronic devices.

This paper reports a novel high-performance phase change composite (PCC) featuring anisotropic high heat conduction ability and dimensionally stable properties for the hot-side thermal management of thermoelectric coolers. This composite is developed by employing paraffin as the phase change material and expanded graphite/phase change polymer (EG/PCP) binary networks as the supporting skeleton. The obtained paraffin/EG/PCP composite demonstrates an axial thermal conductivity of 2.62–6.11 W·m −1 ·K −1 and an even higher radial conductivity of 2.93–12.99 W·m −1 ·K −1 because the graphite sheets in the EG are aligned along the radial direction. The axial size of the composite presents a dimensionless increment of less than 0.0179 when the temperature increases from 25 to 80 °C, whereas the value for the radial size is 0.00284. The latent heat of the as-prepared composite reaches a relatively high level (128–175 kJ·kg −1 ) when the paraffin content is only 50–70 wt% because PCP in the composite also presents heat storage capability. Application of this composite in a thermoelectric cooling system for hot-side passive thermal management leads to a 1.55 °C decrease in the minimum temperature of the cold side compared to using bare substrates on the hot side. The running period of the composite integrated-system with a coefficient of performance (COP) higher than 0.2 is more than twice length compared to the running period of the system with bare substrates. This study sheds light on the development of PCCs with good comprehensive properties, which are promising for use in the thermoelectric field.

Developing passive coolers is a promising thermal management strategy for mitigating severe heat stress and environmental pollution. However, conventional radiative coolers, comprising multilayered and randomly porous structures, face challenges such as specific heat accumulation and compromised mechanical properties. Inspired by the distinctive photonic structure of butterfly wings, we engineered an all-in-one, temperature-adaptive, robust dynamic passive cooler featuring a hierarchically porous network, using a solvent-induced self-assembly strategy to seamlessly graft thermal management materials onto the long nanocellulose molecular chains within an engineered wood template via covalent interactions. The bioinspired dynamic passive cooler (Bio-D cooler) adjusts its performance regarding the ambient temperature via a reversible phase transition. Furthermore, when faced with a high-density heat shock, the Bio-D cooler demonstrates an average temperature drop of 5 °C than conventional radiative coolers, reaching a high cooling power of 130.1 W/m2. Moreover, the Bio-D cooler demonstrates a mechanical strength of 42.9 MPa, nearly ten times higher than conventional dynamic passive coolers. The all-in-one, robust Bio-D cooler demonstrates significant potential for temperature-adaptive thermal regulation applications.

Passive radiative cooling offers zero-energy heat dissipation, yet static photonic structures fail in multi-scenario applications due to distinct or even incompatible requirements of infrared emission spectra across different thermal environments. Herein, a self-switching dynamic infrared radiative cooler (DIRC) is proposed that achieves triple-mode temperature regulation, including sub-ambient, near-ambient, and above-ambient cooling application. By leveraging temperature-triggered directional migration of broadband emission water molecules within thermoresponsive hydrogel, the spectral conversion between infrared selective emission for sub-ambient cooling and broadband emission for above-ambient cooling is realized. The resulting DIRC exhibits an average broadband emissivity of 94.1% across 2.5–25 µm and adaptively switches to a selective emissivity of 81.6% within the 8–13 µm, solar reflectivity maintains ≈90% during spectral conversion. The spectral transition is rapid and autonomous, with response times between 85.6 and 37.3 s across 35–45 °C temperature range. Notably, triple-mode thermal-regulated DIRC achieves a sub-ambient cooling of 9.5 °C for building thermal management, near-ambient cooling of 7.0 °C for enhanced personal comfort, and above-ambient cooling of 6.9 °C for photovoltaic panels. By overcoming the single-scenario and weather conditions limitations of static designs, the proposed DIRC represents a versatile strategy for triple-mode thermal regulation across a wide applications.

The combination of daytime radiative and evaporative cooling has been considered a promising complementary technology for lessening greenhouse gas emissions and global energy consumption. However, this cooling strategy is impaired by environmental heat; its evaporative cooling capacity and cooling time are uncontrollable, and water consumption is significant. Inspired by the cactus’s ability to cope with arid and hot environments, the bilayer passive cooler (BPC) consisting of aerogel with particle coating and hydrogel with hygroscopic agent was developed to overcome these challenges. The aerogel with particle coating possessed high solar reflectance (∼0.95), strong infrared radiation (∼0.94), low thermal conductivity (∼42 mW m −1 K −1 ), and great hydrophobicity (CA = 138°) to perform daytime radiative cooling, thermal insulation, and self-cleaning function. The hydrogel with hygroscopic agent achieved the nighttime moisture capture. The evaporative cooling capacity and cooling time could be regulated by the aerogel and hydrogel thicknesses. The field test showed that the BPC achieved a temperature drop of ∼ 8℃ compared to the ambient temperature of ∼ 30℃ and a cooling power of ∼ 222 W m −2 under the sunlight. Thus, the present study should open a new daytime passive cooling technology pathway.

Microfluidic mixing is a critical issue in the lab-on-a-chip system, which has been applied in various biomedical research. Recently, acoustic wave-based active micromixers have been applied to increase the mixing efficiency via acoustic streaming. However, along with the acoustic streaming, the acoustic thermal effect will generate additional heat to increase the temperature of the microfluid. In this work, we present an integrated thermal control unit applied to a surface acoustic wave (SAW)-assisted micromixer to address this problem. A metal microwire as the thermal resistance sensor is fabricated under the microchannel to measure the temperature in different conditions, together with the Peltier cooler beneath allowing the active temperature control of the microfluid. For characterization, neutralization reaction and alkaline phosphatase assay were successfully conducted on this device. It shows the integrated thermal control unit applied to a SAW-assisted micromixer is highly effective in temperature-sensitive biomedical research.

Passive cooling technologies are one of the promising solutions to the global energy crisis due to no consumption of fossil fuels during operation. However, the existing radiative and evaporative coolers still have problems achieving daytime subambient cooling while maintaining evaporation over the long term. Here, we propose a self-sustained and insulated radiative/evaporative cooler (SIREC), which consists of a porous polyethylene film (P-PE) at the top, an air layer in the middle, and poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with lithium bromide (PLH) at the bottom. In particular, the P-PE shows high solar reflectance (R̅solar = 0.91) and long-wave infrared transmittance (τ̅LWIR = 0.92), which reflects sunlight while enhancing the direct radiative heat transfer between outer space and PLH (ε̅LWIR = 0.96) for sky radiative cooling. In addition, the desirable vapor permeability (579 s m–1) of the P-PE also results in good compatibility with PLH for evaporative cooling (EC). Moreover, the PLH’s ability to harvest atmospheric water at night provides self-sustainment for daytime EC. The air layer between P-PE and PLH further enhances the subambient cooling performance of the SIREC. These findings indicate promising prospects for the integration of passive cooling technologies.
