Cold compression behavior of alumina particles with different grain sizes under high pressure

Fangming Liu,Jiawei Zhang,Pingping Liu,Duanwei He

The cold compression behavior of alumina samples, with average grain sizes of 350 nm, 7.9 μm, and 18.2 μm, has been investigated under non-hydrostatic conditions by using a diamond anvil cell. After treatment with various pressures, the in situ axial X-ray diffraction patterns , transparency variations, and microstructures after decompression of the samples were also analyzed. The results showed that the submicron grains became easily translucent. The larger the grain size, the higher the pressure needed to compress the sample to transparency. On the other hand, for a similar grain size, the various geometrical shapes of the grains did not affect the pressure dependency on transparency. The elastoplastic characteristics of the alumina grains of different sizes under cold compression were found to be consistent with the transparency variation. As a conclusion, alumina particles under cold compression were found to be applicable in the pressure-assisted preparation of alumina transparent ceramics.

Comparative analysis of cold-pressed and hot-pressed coconut oil extraction: Implications for quality and antioxidant capacity

Xingyang Guo,He Huang,Xiaoming Jiang,Chao Chang,Pan Gao,Wu Zhong,Chuanrong Hu,Dongping He,Jiaojiao Yin

Coconut oil, a natural oil widely utilized in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical sectors, is significantly influenced by varieties and processing techniques. This study compared cold-pressed and hot-pressed extraction methods for coconut oil from four coconut varieties, evaluating their physicochemical properties, fatty acid composition, and antioxidant capacity. The results revealed that cold-pressed coconut oil exhibited superior control over parameters such as acid value, peroxide value, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) esters, along with enhanced antioxidant capacity. Lauric acid, the predominant fatty acid in coconut oil, ranged from 47.68% to 50.08% in these oils. A significant negative correlation was observed between lauric acid and peroxide value/MCPD/PAHs, while a positive association existed between phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity. Principal component analysis identified cold-pressed coconut oil from the W4 coconut variety as exhibiting the highest quality, characterized by lower acid value, MCPD and PAHs levels, higher lauric acid content, and potent antioxidant capacity. This study highlights the advantages of cold-pressed coconut oil, particularly from the W4 coconut variety, for superior quality across various parameters, offering valuable insights for the production and processing of coconut oil. These findings contribute to the advancement and application of high-quality coconut oil products in the industry.

Comparison of improvement in learning and memory ability of walnut oil extracted by aqueous enzymatic extraction and cold pressing extraction

Junqing Qian,Qian Li,Luyan Mo,Xiaohua Zhao,Jun Tong,Changyan Zhao,Hui Guo

Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, walnut oil provides a number of physiological benefits, including a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease and a delay in the aging process. In this work, walnut oil was prepared using the aqueous enzyme process and cold pressing method, and it was then analyzed using HPLC and FTIR. The characterization results show that the walnut oil extracted by the aqueous enzyme method outperformed the pressing oil in content of LLL by 11.64%, LLLn by 9.16% and OLL by 4.08%. But this oil had significantly less OLnLn (-) than the pressing oil (7.90%). The Morris water maze and shuttle box tests of ICR mice revealed a notable improvement in the memory of the animals administered walnut oil. Among them, mice fed the walnut oil extracted by aqueous enzyme method showed a much shorter escape latency and a significantly higher rate of active avoidance reaction ( p < 0.05, p < 0.01) than mice fed cold pressing method. With the prolongation of time, the mice even performed better than the positive control PIR group in all aspects. In summary, the quality of walnut oil extracted by aqueous enzyme method is better than that by cold pressing method. Practical Applications : Walnut oil prepared by aqueous enzymatic extraction can improve learning ability, is healthy and pollution-free, and can be utilized as a dietary supplement in ordinary life.

Strengthening of alumina ceramics under cold compression

Fangming Liu,Jiawei Zhang,Pingping Liu,Qihuang Deng,Duanwei He

High pressure obviously decreased the sintering temperature of high melting point ceramics and produced bulks with excellent mechanical and thermal properties. In this study, the effect of pressure alone on the densification process of alumina ceramics was demonstrated. The translucent alumina bulks with unexpected hardness were obtained by compressing α-Al 2 O 3 powder under ultra-high pressure at room temperature. Through analyzing microstructure and hardness of cold compressed samples, the results reveal that ultra-high pressure could crush alumina grains under appropriate pressure, and initiate plastic deformation of grains when the applied pressure exceeds the yield strength of alumina. Thus to enhance the hardness of the samples by grain boundary strengthening and plastic deformation at higher pressure.

A novel glass-fiber-aided cold-press method for fabrication of n-type Ag2Te nanowires thermoelectric film on flexible copy-paper substrate

Jie Gao,Lei Miao,Chengyan Liu,Xiaoyang Wang,Ying Peng,Xingyu Wei,Jianhua Zhou,Yu Chen,Ryo Hashimoto,Toru Asaka,Kunihito Koumoto

Being light, cheap, breathable and foldable, paper is emerging as a new type of substrate for flexible thermoelectric films. Several techniques including soaking and magnetron sputtering have been developed to coat inorganic semiconductors onto paper substrate, but the flexibility and thermoelectric performance of the resulting films are still far from satisfactory. This work implements a novel glass-fiber-aided cold-press method for achieving flexible n-type Ag2Te nanowire (NW) films on copy-paper substrate. A greatly enhanced electrical conductivity has been realized in Ag2Te NWs film due to the disappearance of grain boundaries under compression to 30 MPa. As a consequence, the largest power factor (PF) value of up to 192 μW (mK2)−1 at 195 °C surpasses the performance of paper based thermoelectric films reported previously. Moreover, the PF value only decreases by 20% after 500 bending cycles, suggesting the good flexibility of the copy-paper supported Ag2Te NWs films. A thermoelectric module containing 10 pieces of series-connected Ag2Te films is fabricated using this glass-fiber-aided cold-press method. With ΔT increasing from 20 K to 80 K, the open-circuit voltage of module continually increases from about 11 mV to 60 mV. This measurement of open-circuit voltage has been repeated 10 times to confirm the stability of paper-supported Ag2Te thermoelectric module. The glass-fiber-aided cold-press method in this study provides an effective access to high-performance, flexible and solvent-processable inorganic thermoelectric films on copy-paper substrate.

Effect of LLZTO Tablet Pressing Process on Electrochemical Properties of Button Batteries

Zexian Xu,Wen Zhu,Wenbo Liu,Ken Chen,Yueyang Wu,Jiawei Zhu,Yufei Yang,Wenfang Li,Kang Li

Graphical This paper presents a straightforward preparation method for LLZTO electrolyte tablets with minimal surface passivation layer content. Through experimentation, the optimal conditions for process parameters including mixed powder content, PVA content, and cold pressing pressure are identified. Under these optimized conditions, the LLZTO electrolyte tablets demonstrate a notable enhancement in quality and a reduction in interface resistance, leading to improved electrochemical performance. The garnet-type Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) is a widely studied solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) due to its high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. However, the conventional preparation process of LLZTO electrolyte tablets has encountered several issues such as powder embedment in the mold gaps and inadequate bonding between powders, leading to fragile electrolyte tablets that are prone to cracking. In this study, the effects of LLZTO electrolyte tablet pressing process parameters, including mixed powder content, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) content and cold pressing pressure, on the electrochemical properties of button cells were investigated. The results indicated that the produced solid-state electrolyte tablets with high quality, low interfacial resistance and low surface passivation layer (Li 2 CO 3 ) content was obtained by using 0.8 g of mixed powder content, 0.7 g of PVA content and 20Mpa pressure. The interface resistance decreased from 2927.1 Ω to 1069.7 Ω under these conditions. Additionally, the Li symmetric cell treated with adhesive exhibited stable cycling for over 400 hours at 25 °C under a current density of 0.1 mA ⋅ cm −2 .

In situ synthesis of a gamma-Al2O3 whisker reinforced aluminium matrix composite by cold pressing and sintering

Xiaoyao Qu,Fucheng Wang,Chunsheng Shi,Naiqin Zhao,Enzuo Liu,Chunnian He,Fang He

An aluminium matrix composite reinforced by in situ-generated gamma-Al 2 O 3 whiskers was fabricated from a simple Al-H 3 BO 3 system through cold pressing and sintering. The gamma-Al 2 O 3 whiskers with an average diameter of 20   nm and an aspect ratio of 10–15 were synthesized during the sintering process and homogeneously distributed in the Al matrix. As a result of the perfect lattice matching between gamma-Al 2 O 3 and the Al matrix, the gamma-Al 2 O 3 whisker is a desired reinforcement for the Al matrix, improving the ultimate tensile strength and hardness to 217   MPa and 43.5 HV, respectively, with a satisfactory ductility of 11%. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis shows that the growth of the whisker occurred at 550–650   °C, and the ball milling energy has a significant effect on whisker growth.

Profiling and quantification of lipids in cold-pressed rapeseed oils based on direct infusion electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry

Ya Xie,Fang Wei,Shuling Xu,Bangfu Wu,Chang Zheng,Xin Lv,Zongyuan Wu,Hong Chen,Fenghong Huang

Microwave pretreatment of rapeseeds prior to cold-pressing is a simple and desirable method for producing high quality oils. In this study, a rapid and sensitive lipid profiling platform employing an accurate quantification strategy was established based on direct infusion electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Using this developed platform, we further investigated the effect of microwave pretreatment of rapeseeds on the contents of important lipids such as triglycerides (TAGs), phospholipids (PLs), and free fatty acids (FFAs) in 15 different rapeseed oils. Our results demonstrated that no significant changes of total FAs and TAGs contents were observed after microwave pretreatment, while FFA contents increased and PLs contents significantly increased up to 40 folds. The potential mechanism of lipid changes was also discussed. The established lipidomics profiling platform can provide reliable lipids profiling data and help to better understand the potential mechanism of microwave pretreatment in oil processing.

A bio-based adhesive based on soy protein-gelatin with high cold compression strength, toughness, and water resistance

Xiaochun Zhang,Yangsheng Zhang,Wenwu Yang,Jianxing Ren,Bangke Xu,Anbo Pan,Yantao Xu

In order to reduce the harm of formaldehyde-based adhesives and solve the problem of petroleum resource shortage, green and formaldehyde free bio-based adhesives have great market development potential. Soy protein adhesive is expected to solve these problems, but it has disadvantages such as low cold compression strength and high bonding brittleness, making it difficult to carry out large-scale industrial applications. This study introduced gelatin and triglycerides (TGA) into soy protein (SM) adhesive to construct a double bond composite system. TGA undergoes cross-linking reaction with soy protein to form a cross-linked structure as the skeleton structure, which endows the adhesive with strength and water resistance; and gelatin (Gel) forms hydrogen bonds with soy protein as sacrificial bonds, improving the toughness and cold compression performance of the adhesive. Compared with pure SM adhesive, the dry/wet shear strength of modified SM/2-Gel/TGA adhesive increased by 27.8 % and 400 %, respectively, reaching 2.3 MPa and 1.4 MPa. The moisture absorption rate of the modified adhesive decreased by 16.5 %, the residual rate increased by 10.0 %, and the fracture strain increased by 52.2 % to 14 %. In addition, in the adhesive treated with cold pressing, the lap strength increased by 25.1 % to 4.23 MPa, indicating that the cold pressing strength, bonding toughness, and water resistance of the modified adhesive were effectively improved. This study provides a new way for preparing green, formaldehyde free high-performance bio-based adhesives.

Isocyanate Micro/Nano Fillers as Functional Cross-linkers in Wood Adhesives with Cold-pressing Bonding Strength

Chuang Ning,Wenhao Cao,Xueying Duan,Ting Xie,Zhichao Zhang,Fangyan Ou,Wenyu Pan,Zhiyong Qin,Zengxi Wei,Qian Sun,Zequan Li,Wei Gao,Yan Qing,Shuangliang Zhao

Isocyanate is a highly reactive compound that quickly reacts with active hydrogen, posing challenges in its use in emulsion adhesives. Micro/nanoencapsulation technology involves enclosing a core material with a protective shell under specific conditions. Encapsulating isocyanate via micro/nanoencapsulation extends its lifespan in emulsion adhesives and enables controlled release, improving the mechanical strength of the adhesive. In this study, polyurea was used as the shell material and isophorone diisocyanate as the core to prepare isocyanate micro/nanofillers via micro/nanoencapsulation. Isocyanate micro/nanofillers were prepared through interfacial polymerization in an oil-in-water system with process optimization. The obtained isocyanate micro/nanofillers had an active group content of 22.1   wt %. The shielding effect of the shell effectively prolonged the lifespan of isocyanate groups in the emulsion. After six weeks of storage, the isocyanate micro/nanofillers retained most of their activity, showing satisfactory stability. When used as functional cross-linking agents in emulsion adhesives, pressure-induced rupture of the isocyanate micro/nanofillers triggered reactions with compounds containing active hydrogen, forming strong chemical bonds and significantly improving lap shear strength (4.01   MPa), which is 4.22 times that of the original latex. Transforming isocyanate from liquid to solid via micro/nanoencapsulation not only extended its lifespan but also improved bonding performance. The prepared adhesive was solvent-free, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, clean, low-cost, and offered excellent bonding strength. These findings will enable broad practical applications in wood structural joints, engineering assemblies, and related fields.

ZrO2 and MxOy (M= La, Ce, and Nb) synergistically reinforced porous cordierite ceramics synthesized via a facile solid-state reaction

Lulu Wang,Beiyue Ma,Xinming Ren,Chao Yu,Chengji Deng,Chunming Liu,Chuanbo Hu

In an attempt to enhance the sintering and mechanical performance of porous cordierite ceramics (Mg 2 Al 4 Si 5 O 18 ) as support materials for vehicle exhaust catalysts, ZrO 2 and M x O y (M = La, Ce, and Nb) were simultaneously introduced into cordierite sintered at 1350 °C for 4 h. Then, the reinforced function of ZrO 2 and M x O y on the properties of porous cordierite ceramics was systematically evaluated, especially for the sample co-doped with ZrO 2 and La 2 O 3 . The results displayed a distinct enhancement in mechanical and thermal performance, and the cold compressive strength increased from 72.74 to 158.59 MPa as well as thermal conductivity ranged from 1.66 to 2.01 W m −1  K −1 , respectively. It is found that ZrO 2 facilitated activation sintering introduced via lattice distortion in cordierite and La 2 O 3 accelerated the formation of cordierite and ZrSiO 4 microcrystalline through the low-temperature liquid phase. The synergic effect between ZrO 2 and La 2 O 3 , therefore, had a significant role in the reinforced mechanical and thermal performance of porous cordierite ceramics. This work not only offers a feasible strengthening strategy, but also expands the possibilities for building high-performance structural and functional ceramics .

Barnacle and mussel-inspired of functional silk fibroin to prepare biomass adhesive with ultra-high cold-pressing adhesion

Ma Chao,Wei Jie,Cao Pusen,Han Yilei,Zhang Shifeng,Chen Yuxia,Guo Yong

Soy protein adhesives have shown attractive potential across wood-based composite application as replacements for formaldehyde synthetic resins. However, the problems of poor cold-pressing bonding performance, mildew resistance, and flame retardancy are major bottlenecks preventing their widespread industrial use. Herein, a novel dual-bionic soybean meal (SM) adhesive was developed with excellent bonding performance inspired by the strong wet adhesion system of barnacles and mussels. Polydopamine (PDA) adopts for coating the silk fibroin (SF) via a facile in situ polymerization to form a functional SF/PDA (SPA), which acts as a hydrogen bond donor in adhesive system. Benefiting from abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, multiple hydrogen bond cross-linked networks, and the removal of interfacial water, the adhesive generated a strong cold-pressing adhesion (771.0 kPa) and toughness (1.54 MJ/m 3 ), which respectively increased by 267.1% and 208.0% compared with SM adhesive. The introduction of borate further induces the formation of the dynamic cross-linked network along with supramolecular interactions in adhesive system, which demonstrated strong adhesion to different hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates in the adhesive. Additionally, borate and phenol hydroxyl groups synergistically improved mildew resistance and flame retardancy in adhesives, which were stored for 20 days without mildew formation and showed combustion suppression behavior during combustion tests. The design of this bionic system offers a novel approach for developing high performance wood adhesives.
