In this article, silver nanowires (AgNWs) with aspect ratios of 1000 and lengths up to 200 μm are obtained by a modified polyol approach. These very long AgNWs are then utilized to prepare transparent electrodes (TEs) displaying a transmittance of 91.3% at a sheet resistance of 8.6 ohm/sq without any post-treatment. Furthermore, we also demonstrate a process for the cold welding of Ag NWs by simply dipping the AgNWs films into CTAB solutions, resulting in a further improvement for the optoelectronic performance. After the post-treatment, the AgNW-based TEs can achieve a transmittance of 93% at a sheet resistance of 9.5 ohm/sq. In addition, the electric behaviors of AgNW-based TEs are investigated. In the bulk-like regime, for the as-prepared AgNW-based TEs, the Figure of merit (FOM), DC to optical conductivity ratio reaches up to 566.8. After the cold welding process, the DC to optical conductivity ratio can reach even higher values (631.6). In the percolative regime, the as-prepared and welded AgNW-based TEs can achieve Π (FOM with percolative-like behavior) values of 166.8 and 242.1, respectively.

Hydrolysis of magnesium-based materials is a promising hydrogen source for fuel cells. Our previous work (Liu et al. 2015) proposed the 30 wt% calcium-magnesium alloy hydrides (MCH) with superior hydrolysis performance than magnesium and magnesium hydride. But the easily-happened cold-welding reduces the pulverization efficiency. Additionally, the hydrolysis conversion rate at room temperature remains low. In current work, we have explored the novel composites including MCH and 0-20 wt% expanded graphite (EG) to examine the impact and underlying mechanisms of EG as additive in mitigating cold-welding and enhancing hydrolysis. The results suggest that EG coats on the material surface as a dispersant to prevent cold-welding, optimize ball milling efficiency and reduce particle size, further facilitating hydrogenation and hydrolysis. In deionized water , MCH with 10 wt% EG (MCH-10EG) displays the best hydrolysis performance, with a low activation energy of 11.26 kJ mol −1 and a complete conversion within 8 min at 55 °C. Moreover, at room temperature, combined with the corrosion effects of Cl − and H + to break the formed magnesium hydroxide passivation layer , MCH-10EG achieves a complete conversion within only 5 min in 0.3 mol L −1 aluminum chloride solution. This work may significantly advance the large-scale production and practical application of magnesium-calcium-based hydrolysis materials as hydrogen source.

When a brittle nanoporous material infiltrated with water is dried in air, the capillarity-induced large volume shrinkage often leads to cracking within the material. In consequence, porous material may become more fragile or even shatter after drying. In this paper, we prepared nanoporous gold (NPG) with a low relative density by dealloying dilute Ag(Au) precursor alloys. Drying of this sample in air leads to a large volume contraction up to 22 ∼ 38%. Meanwhile, the material undergoes a ductile–brittle transition during drying: The wet sample of as-dealloyed NPG, while tested in water, shows a surprisingly large tensile strain up to 8%–10% before fracture; After drying, the fracture strain of the same material drops to around 1% in tension. This ductile-to-brittle transition is not caused by the formation of cracks as usual. Instead, it can be linked to the self-healing of microcracks during drying. We found that the plasticity of as-dealloyed NPG arises from the presence of high-density native microcracks. The bridging or deflection of these microcracks in tension leads to a diffuse failure, which accounts for the large irreversible tensile strain of the wet, as-dealloyed NPG. Further examination reveals that these native microcracks can be healed during drying, owing to the cold welding of nano-ligaments under capillary contraction force. Healing of these microcracks suppresses the diffuse failure induced by crack bridging or deflection, leading to a brittle fracture of the dried NPG in tension. Cold welding of nano-ligaments, which accounts for the anomalous crack healing and ductile–brittle transition of NPG in drying, might occur frequently in nanoporous metals under external load and contribute significantly to their mechanical performance.

In this paper, graphene oxide/polyethylene glycol (GO/PEG) composite water-based lubricant was prepared by an ultrasonic dispersion method, and characterized and analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The suspension performance of GO/PEG composite water-based lubricant in water was verified by static sedimentation and centrifugation, and then, the prepared GO/PEG composite water-based lubricant was added into 304 stainless steel and 6061 aluminum alloy, and the coefficient of friction (COF) curve, average COF value, average wear rate, corresponding photomicrographs of balls and disks after wear, and energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) elemental analysis were used to illustrate the lubrication effect and lubrication mechanism. The results show that the GO/PEG composite water-based lubricant possesses excellent suspension ability in water, and the average COF value and wear rate of GO/PEG composite water-based lubricant are reduced by 78.8% and 88.8%, respectively, compared with water lubrication. The excellent lubrication effect of GO/PEG composite water-based lubricant can effectively reduce the cold-welding and adhesive wear phenomenon, mainly because GO/PEG composite water-based lubricant first fills the uneven surface of friction mating to form a high-quality lubricating film and then because of the special space structure of GO and the low shear between GO layers and the synergistic lubrication effect of GO/PEG.

Mechanochemical ball milling is a straightforward and efficient technology for material synthesis. However, cold welding significantly hampers both the reaction rate and the powder yield of the ball milling process. This study introduces a novel strategy to mitigate cold welding by utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO 2 ) as a process control agent. The mechanism by which SCCO 2 inhibits cold welding was elucidated: SCCO 2 reduces surface energy and passivates dangling bonds on the newly exposed surfaces generated by ball milling, thereby preventing undesired re-formation. Building on this approach, a groundbreaking SCCO 2 -driven ball milling (SDBM) method was developed, enabling the one-step, scalable production of 100 g of binary spinel oxide at room temperature within 8 h. Remarkably, the powder yield increases significantly from 13% (conventional ball milling) to 98%. The synthesized spinel oxide exhibits a small particle size, enhanced Mg migration, abundant oxygen vacancies, and high electrochemical performance (385 C/g for MgCo 2 O 4 ). Beyond MgCo 2 O 4 , various binary and ternary spinel oxides were fabricated using SDBM technology. These results highlight the considerable benefits and the universality of SDBM technology in the fabrication of innovative materials.
