Synergistic effects of coal tar and vacuum residue in co-pyrolysis and co-hydrogenation

Xiaoning Zhang,Buning Chen,Jianwei Wang,Yusheng Zhou,Xueli Huang,He Huang

The high content of heteroatoms and trace metals makes it difficult to upgrade poor-quality oils (PQO). The co-pyrolysis or co-hydrogenation of coal tar (CT)/vacuum residue (VR) is a new approach for the efficient utilization of PQO. The products of CT/VR co-pyrolysis and co-hydrogenation were characterized by RV, TG-FTIR, and GC × GC-TOF. Co-pyrolysis reduces the reaction harshness by lowering the activation energy of pyrolysis. Co-pyrolysis changes the reaction paths of oxygen-containing free radicals by promoting the generation of oxygen-containing organic compounds and inhibiting coke generation by increasing the pyrolysis spillover of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Co-hydrogenation increased the gasoline and diesel yields while reducing coke production. The saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes of CT and VR experienced a significant increase in the gasoline and diesel fractions after hydrogenation. The gasoline and diesel content enhancement in the four-component hydrogenation products of CT increased with increasing polarity, whereas the opposite trend was observed for the four-component hydrogenation of VR. There was a clear synergistic effect between the aromatics of CT and VR in terms of hydrogenation saturation, while the synergistic effect of the aromatics was somewhat weaker. The saturates and resins had an inhibitory effect on each other.

Pressure Reduction Enhancing the Production of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from Glucose in Aqueous Phase Catalysis System

Ke Ke,Hairui Ji,Xiaoning Shen,Fangong Kong,Bo Li

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) obtained from biomass is an important platform chemical for the next generation of plastics and biofuel production. Although industrialized, the high yield of HMF in aqueous systems was rarely achieved. The main problem is that HMF tends to form byproducts when co-adsorbed with water at acid sites. In this study, the pressure was reduced to improve the maximum yield of HMF from 9.3 to 35.2% (at 190 °C in 60 min) in a glucose aqueous solution. The mechanism here involved water boiling as caused by pressure reduction, which in turn promoted the desorption of HMF from the solid catalyst, thereby inhibiting the side reaction of HMF. Furthermore, the solid catalysts could be reused three times without a significant loss of their catalytic activity. Overall, this work provides an effective strategy to improve the yield of HMF in water over heterogeneous catalysts in practice.Keywords:glucose;5-hydroxylmethyfurfural;aqueous phase;heterogeneous catalysts;pressure reduction

A “reduced-pressure distillation” method to prepare zein-based fat analogue for application in mayonnaise formulation

Jiahui Gu,Zhong Xin,Xin Meng,Shuzhen Sun,Qingan Qiao,Hongbo Deng

In this study, the zein extracted from distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is utilized to produce a fat analogue, by employing a simple ”reduced-pressure distillation microparticulation“ method. The optimal conditions for preparing the fat analogue are as follows: a zein concentration of 3 w/v% (based on 60 v/v% ethanol water), an agitator speed of 200 rpm, a xanthan gum amount of 20 wt% (based on zein mass) and a heating temperature of 50 °C. The zein-based fat analogue obtained has a volume-weighted mean diameter (D[4, 3]) of about 16 μm, which is then applied in the formulation of mayonnaise , at fat substitution ratios of 0% (full-fat), 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%, respectively. Based on the appearance, stability, total calorific value, as well as rheological, microstructure and sensory analyses, it may be concluded that the fat substitution ratio of no more than 40% is acceptable. This paper illustrates another high-value added use of zein.

A high-efficiency automatic pressure-relief drug transfer device for anticancer medications with superior closed performance

Liming Xie,Guanfeng Chen,Qianqian Ouyang,Weiyan Quan,Xiaoming Xie,Xiaoling Chen,Lefan Li,Sidong Li,Rizhi Chen,Rongqiong Luo,Zhiqing Qiu

Objective: Preventing exposure to hazardous drugs is crucial for healthcare workers to avoid health risks. To mitigate healthcare workers’ risks when handling hazardous drugs, we developed a novel closed-system drug-transfer device (CSTD) called CSTD(JLY). This CSTD has an automatic pressure-relief structure. Hence, it can significantly decrease the resistance in the push/pull of a piston rod if an operator transfers drugs, thereby reducing the burden on the hands of the operator during drug transfer. Methods: We investigated the closed performance of the novel CSTD (JLY) by comparing it with the performance of a syringe. We selected a simulation drug (fluorescein sodium), commonly used drugs (lansoprazole, nimodipine, and tropisetron), and a commonly used anti-cancer agent (cyclophosphamide) to conduct exposure evaluation. Results: Compared with a syringe, CSTD(JLY) could reduce drug leakage significantly. Our novel CSTD with an automatic pressure-relief structure had superior closed performance. CSTD(JLY) could solve the problem of liquid-drug leakage during drug transfer. Conclusion: This feature could reduce the exposure risk healthcare workers and patients.

Cotransplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells for treating steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Xu Haixia,Wang Chengqiang,Liu Chun,Peng Ziyue,Li Jianjun,Jin Yanglei,Wang Yihan,Guo Jiasong,Zhu Lixin

Steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is characterized by decreased osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and increased adipogenesis. While bone tissue engineering has been widely investigated to treat ONFH, its therapeutic effects remain unsatisfactory. Therefore, further studies are required to determine optimal osteogenesis, angiogenesis and adipogenesis in the necrotic area of the femoral head. In our study, we developed a carboxymethyl chitosan/alginate/bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell/endothelial progenitor cell (CMC/ALG/BMSC/EPC) composite implant, and evaluated its ability to repair steroid-induced ONFH. Our in vitro studies showed that BMSC and EPC coculture displayed enhanced osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation. When compared with single BMSC cultures, adipogenic differentiation in coculture systems was reduced. We also fabricated a three-dimensional (3D) CMC/ALG scaffold for loading cells, using a lyophilization approach, and confirmed its good cell compatibility characteristics, that is, high porosity, low cytotoxicity and favorable cell adhesion. 3D coculture of BMSCs and EPCs also promoted secretion of osteogenic and angiogenic factors. Then, we established an rabbit model of steroid-induced ONFH. The CMC/ALG/BMSC/EPC composite implant was transplanted into the bone tunnel of the rabbit femoral head after core decompression (CD) surgery. Twelve weeks later, radiographical and histological analyses revealed CMC/ALG/BMSC/EPC composite implants had facilitated the repair of steroid-induced ONFH, by promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis, and reducing adipogenesis when compared with CD, CMC/ALG, CMC/ALG/BMSC and CMC/ALG/EPC groups. Thus, our data show that cotransplantation of BMSCs and EPCs in 3D scaffolds is beneficial in treating steroid-induced ONFH.
