Friction-reducing and vibration-absorbing performances on a novel thermoplastic bearing material reinforced by nano-WS2 and UHMWPE

Shifan Li,Conglin Dong,Chengqing Yuan,Xiuqin Bai

High performance materials with low friction and high vibration-absorbing properties play a vital role in stable operation of water-lubricated ship stern bearings. Therefore, a TPU composite material reinforced by WS 2 and UHMWPE was prepared. After friction and vibration tests, it was found that WS 2 reduced the coefficient of friction of TPU matrix with its excellent lubricating properties, and after adding UHMWPE, the coefficient of friction continued to drop to 0.07 and became more stable during the whole friction process . The synergistic effect of WS 2 and UHMWPE effectively reduced the friction and amplitude of the composite and made the composite present the best tribological and vibration-absorbing performance. This research provided a basis for the design of new water-lubricated ship bearing materials .

Friction-induced vibration and noise behaviors of a composite material modified by graphene nano-sheets

Liyuan Zhang,Chengqing Yuan,Conglin Dong,Yuhang Wu,Xiuqin Bai

Due to the weak hydrodynamic lubrication effect under low speed and heavy load in the starting or stopping state of ship propeller stern shafts, it is very difficult to form the effective lubricating films between water-lubricated polymer stern tube bearings and shafts. Under these extreme conditions, friction and wear usually are severe problems, which can induce frictional vibration and noise. In this study, graphene nano-sheets (GNS) were chosen to modify the polymer which was often made into the ship water-lubricated stern tube bearing. The friction-induced vibration and noise behaviors of the modified polymer materials were carried out using a wear test apparatus with precision vibration and noise sensors under the water-lubricated condition. The results showed that friction-induced vibration and noise behaviors of modified polymer materials strongly depended on the content of graphene nano-sheets and wear processes. GNS endowed the modified polymers with a limited excellent self-lubricating to reduce the vibration and noise behaviors. The modified polymer materials with GNS exhibited good friction-induced vibration and noise reduction properties. The knowledge gained in this study aimed at further comprehensively understanding the friction-induced vibration and noise behaviors of the polymer materials and designing a composite material with good self-lubricating and vibration reduction properties.

Investigation of friction and vibration performance of lithium complex grease containing nano-particles on rolling bearing

Can Wu,Kai Yang,Ying Chen,Jing Ni,Lidan Yao,Xinglin Li

This paper presents a comparative study of the tribological and vibration performance of the synthesized lithium complex grease (LCG) containing Carbon black, Fe 3 O 4 and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles on rolling bearing . The micromorphology, friction coefficient , worn surface and bearing vibration experiment of four greases were studied. The results show that in presence of nanoparticles friction and wear behaviors are improved compared to LCG without nanoparticles. The best tribological performance is obtained in presence of Al 2 O 3 nanoparticle, which is mainly attributed to its high hardness, cylindrical shape and deposition on the worn surface. Further, the wettability test shows that Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles can effectively promote the flow of base oil on the LCG soap fibers, which results in the most effective bearing vibration suppression.

Solid-Liquid Triboelectric Nanogenerator based Self-Sensing Vibration Suppression Device

Yanwen Li,Kaiqiang Wang,Hanwen Yang,Yilin Sun,Hanli Zhang,Ke Xiao,Zhenkun Li,Decai Li,Jinjin Li

Micro-vibrations adversely affect critical equipment, devices, and systems, resulting in economic losses and safety risks. Hence, the imperative tasks of monitoring and mitigating micro-vibrations present formidable challenges in the field of vibration control. This study introduces a solid-liquid triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based self-sensing vibration suppression device (S-L SVD) designed with a vertically structured configuration. This device not only possesses the capability to detect but also effectively reduce vibrations. The S-L SVD consists of an upper self-sensing unit utilizing liquid-silica synergy and a lower damping unit employing magnetic fluid (MF)-permanent magnet synergy. The S-L SVD exhibits a remarkable vibration monitoring sensitivity of 1.9   V/mm, enabling the detection of micro-vibrations with amplitudes as small as 0.368   mm. The self-sensing unit effectively functions as a miniature liquid tuned damper, substantially enhancing the device's damping capability, resulting in a noteworthy 19.6% damping efficiency improvement. Leveraging solid-liquid TENG, the S-L SVD seamlessly integrates vibration monitoring and suppression, showcasing exceptional durability. This innovation not only provides valuable insights into vibration monitoring but also introduces novel approaches for improving damping performance. Furthermore, the device is well-suited for applications in energy-scarce and challenging maintenance environments.

Effects of TiO2 nano-particles on wear-resistance and vibration-reduction properties of a polymer for water-lubricated bearing

Shifan Li,Conglin Dong,Chengqing Yuan,Xiuqin Bai

Water-lubricated bearings play a vital role in improving the energy efficiency and environmental friendliness of ships. However, under the operating conditions such as start-stop and steering, the ship's stern bearing is often in boundary-lubricated or even dry friction condition due to the weak load-bearing capacity of the water film between the ship's drive shaft and the stern bearing. Therefore, the design of a polymer material with a low coefficient of friction and low vibration amplitude in both water-lubricated and dry friction conditions can greatly improve the stability and safety of the ship's operation. As a common reinforcing filler , TiO 2 nanoparticles have a notable enhancement effect on the tribological properties of lubricants. Therefore, in this paper, the tribological behaviors between UHMWPE matrix reinforced with TiO 2 nanoparticles and zirconia ceramic ball were investigated and the frictional vibrations during the friction process were analyzed. The results showed that TiO 2 generated a ball-bearing effect on the surfaces of the friction pair , which led to a smooth and flat wear surface and reduced the friction and vibration behaviors. The modified composite with 0.9 wt% TiO 2 exhibited the best tribological and vibration-absorbing properties in both water-lubricated and dry friction conditions. This study helps to provide a theoretical foundation for the design of marine water-lubricated bearing materials with excellent wear-resistance and vibration-reduction properties.

Modified Nano-SiO2 Synergistic Carnauba Wax Reinforced Polyurethane Composite with Enhanced Hydrophobicity, Wear Resistance, and Vibration Damping for Underwater Equipment

Shaoqian Qin,Zhiwei Guo,Zumin Wu,Huabin Yin,Haofan Hu,Chengqing Yuan

The wear and vibration challenges of water-lubricated polymer components in mechanical systems remain critical. In this study, a polyurethane composite reinforced with modified nano-SiO2 and carnauba wax via casting (PUCW-SiO2) was developed, and its properties were explored. With merely 0.5% additive content of modified SiO2, the optimized composite of PUCW-0.5%SiO2 exhibited a low water swelling rate (0.157% after 7 days), enhanced mechanical properties (compressive elastic modulus is 410.39 MPa and compressive strength is 89.12 MPa), reduced wear loss (0.01 g in water), effective vibration damping (vibration acceleration signal is reduced to −4–4 m/s2 in a stable wear stage in a pure water environment), and sand-water environmental tolerance (average friction coefficient is 0.351, average wear loss is 0.0253 g). The improvements stem from modified SiO2 reinforcing the polyurethane matrix and synergizing with carnauba wax, facilitating the formation of a hydrophobic surface and continuous lubricating film that collectively mitigate wear and vibration.
