Friction-induced transfer of carbon quantum dots on the interface: Microscopic and spectroscopic studies on the role of inorganic–organic hybrid nanoparticles as multifunctional additive for enhanced lubrication

Mengting Ye,Tao Cai,Wangji Shang,Lina Zhao,Yunxiao Zhang,Dan Liu,Shenggao Liu

Inorganic–organic hybrid carbon quantum dots (CQDs) attached the structure of diphenylamine (DPA) on the surfaces (CQDs -N ) have been successfully prepared by one-step pyrolysis method at lower temperature. The obtained N-doped carbon dots (CQDs -N ) were spherical particles with a narrow size distribution exhibiting photoluminescent property, which are also proved to be an multifunctional additive exhibiting not only antioxidant but also antiwear and friction-reducing performances. Even tested under higher load, CQDs -N still exhibited superior friction-reducing performance till now in polyethylene glycol (PEG) for steel/steel pairs. The function of CQDs -N with polar nature, acting as bearing balls and depositing on the interface to form non-uniform protective film, might account for the excellent antiwear and friction-reducing performances under boundary lubrication .

Tough adhesion and antifouling poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel coating on the arch wire for antibacterial adhesion

Li MingWen,Tang Chen,Yu XiXi,Shi XinLei,Yu Hui,Yin HaiYan,You Min,Chen Qiang,Ding Xi

The arch wire (AW) plays an important role in providing continuous force, aligning the teeth, and excellent dental arch stability for orthodontic treatment. However, the high friction performance of the AW surface can increase bacterial adhesion and colonization, leading to oral hygiene problems. Herein, a simple method is developed to modify the surface of the orthodontic wire with a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel coating, which can improve the lubricity and antibacterial adhesion of the AW and prevent the oral hygiene problems caused by itself. The PVA hydrogel coating can toughly adhere to the surface of the AW and remarkably reduce the friction performance of the AW, and then its friction coefficient in water can reach 0.005. Under the action of brushing and bending, the PVA hydrogel coating possesses superior ultralubrication and hardly affects the mechanical properties of the stainless-steel substrate. Moreover, the PVA hydrogel coating can significantly inhibit bacterial adhesion on the surface of the AW, thereby reducing bacterial colonization and maintaining oral hygiene while correcting the shape of the mouth and jaw. Therefore, the PVA hydrogel coating exhibits tough adhesion and good antibacterial adhesion while maintaining the mechanical properties of the AW, and it is a promising antifouling coating for improving the performance of the AW.

In Situ Alkylated Graphene as Oil Dispersible Additive for Friction and Wear Reduction

Lei Zhang,Yi He,Lin Zhu,Chao Yang,Qianhe Niu,Chenglin An

Alkylated graphene (AGN) with an excellent oil dispersion property was synthesized using an in situ alkylation reaction. The structure and morphology of AGN were characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy and the results indicate that long alkyl chains was successfully grafted on the surfaces of graphene sheets. Tribology properties of AGN as friction-reduction and wear-resistance additive in hydroisomerization dewax base oil (VHVI8) were evaluated using a four-ball machine. The results show that the friction coefficient (COF) and wear scar diameter (WSD) were reduced by 10.9% and 23.0% compared with bare VHVI8 base oil. The friction-reduction and wear–resistance properties are attributed to the stable dispersion, nanobearing mechanism, and ultimate strength of AGN.

Surface-modified Ti3C2Tx MXene as anti-wear and extreme pressure additive for PFPE supramolecular gel

Jinglun Guo,Zhenling Shang,Yue Sun,Chenghao Li,Jianyi Xia,Yuxin Zou,Kang Du,Guoqiang Liu,Feng Zhou,Weimin Liu

Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricant is widely used in plenty of cutting-edge technologies because of its extraordinary properties. However, poor boundary lubrication and creep limit their further applications. Here, we demonstrated a PFPE supramolecular gel with surface-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x as additives for highly efficient boundary lubrication and prevention of creep. It turned into an oily liquid at 124.5 °C, accompanied by a rapid decrease in viscosity. Additionally, the phase transition could be achieved by shear stress. This kind of gel reduced wear volume by 90.75% compared with pure PFPE oil. Its friction coefficient (∼0.113) varied slightly with time. Notably, its load-bearing capacity exceeded 1500 N. This work puts forward an approach to the preparation of PFPE-based supramolecular gel lubricant with surface-functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x additive.

Amino-ionic liquid functionalized graphene: A dual-purpose additive for lubrication and electrical erosion resistance

Bo Dai,Qian Jia,Bingbing Lai,Xiaoyu Wang,Lizan Wang,Haichao Liu,Wenjing Lou,Xiaobo Wang

To address electrical erosion in rolling bearings of the motor systems of electrical vehicles, this study presents an in situ functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) with an amino-functionalized ionic liquid, [Bmim]PF 6 , resulting in a reduced graphene oxide–ionic liquid composite (rGOIL) with excellent electrical conductivity and outstanding friction-reducing and anti-wear performances. A series of conductive urea-based greases are formulated by optimizing the rGOIL content. The structure and morphology of rGOIL are characterized by FTIR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and XPS. Tribological tests using an SRV tribometer and electrical erosion evaluation on a bearing test rig show that grease containing 0.5 wt% rGOIL maintains a low and stable friction coefficient (0.102) under a 200 N load at 50 °C, with a 93 % reduction in wear volume compared to conventional polyurea grease. In electrical erosion tests, the bearing vibration amplitude stabilizes at 1.1 mm/s 2 , only 15 % of that measured for the reference grease. XPS and TEM analyses reveal the formation of a tribochemical film consisting of graphene nanosheets, ionically bonded liquid layers, and metal fluorides and phosphates. This film forms a conductive lubrication layer through a synergistic "lubrication–conductivity–lubrication" mechanism, effectively mitigating electrical erosion and enhancing bearing durability.

Tribological Performance of Epoxy Nanocomposite Reinforced by BNNSs-Supporting-α-Fe2O3

Wenchao Shi,Xuanlin Li,Shili Zhao,Tian He,Bi Yang,Beibei Chen

Developing low-friction, high wear-resistant epoxy-based self-lubricating composites is crucial for reducing friction and wear in transmission components of advanced equipment. However, the shortcomings of brittleness in hence and poor wear resistance of epoxy limit its tribological application under harsh sliding conditions. In this study, the nanohybrid of h-BN nanosheets (BNNSs)-supporting-α-Fe 2 O 3 was designed to harness their synergistic reinforcement and lubricating effect on the tribological performance of epoxy. The feature of α-Fe 2 O 3 /BNNSs was analyzed, and its tribological enhancement on epoxy nanocomposites was explored systematically. Results demonstrated that the α-Fe 2 O 3 of size less than 50 nm was uniformly loaded on the BNNSs surface to form a rough microstructure, which was conducive to perfecting the interfacial compatibility of the epoxy composite. Moreover, the α-Fe 2 O 3 /BNNSs significantly improved the capacity for antifriction and anti-wear of epoxy. Only by filling 0.7 wt% α-Fe 2 O 3 /BNNSs, the coefficient of friction (COF) of the corresponding composite coating was reduced by 85.1%, and its wear rate was significantly reduced, nearly 96.7%. More importantly, the epoxy-0.7 wt%α-Fe 2 O 3 /BNNSs kept reasonable tribological performance under high loads/speeds. By analyzing the worn surface of friction pairs, the tribological synergism of α-Fe 2 O 3 /BNNSs on epoxy coatings was discussed. This study might offer novel insights into the design of high-performance epoxy self-lubricating nanocomposite coatings.

A novel hindered phenol based multi-functional lubricant additive with enhanced antioxidant and tribological performance

Yuexia Huang,Qiang Chen,Jing Yang,Pingxia Guo,Xiao Liu,Kai Feng,Meirong Cai,Feng Zhou

A novel oil-miscible hindered phenol based multifunctional lubricant additive (BHT)-NP was synthesized and its antioxidant, tribological properties were thoroughly characterized. Compared with the commercially available hindered phenolic antioxidants (ST-135), the (BHT)-NP exhibited enhanced antioxidant and wear reduction properties at room temperature or 100 ℃. Specifically, adding 4 wt% (BHT)-NP to PAO10 could prolong its oxidation induction time from 4 to 70 min, which is 2.2 times that of ST-135. Additionally, this lubricant system could also decrease the wear volume of PAO10 + 4 wt% ST-135 by 88.67 % (rt), 88.42 % (100 ℃), respectively. Subsequently, lubrication mechanism analysis results suggested that an effective protection film was fabricated on the sliding steel surface, which significantly prevented the direct contact between the sliding pairs.

The extreme pressure and lubricating behaviors of potassium borate nanoparticles as additive in PAO

Yi Li,Songwei Zhang,Qi Ding,Jinzhu Tang,Baofeng Qin,Litian Hu

The potassium borate nanoparticles (nPB) as lubricant additive were prepared with an eco-friendly method. The tribological properties of nPB and ZDDP as lubricant additives in polyalphaolefin (PAO) were systematically evaluated using a four-ball tribometer and a SRV fretting friction and wear tester, which suggested that nPB exhibited excellent extreme pressure capacity, and better anti-wear and friction-reducing properties than ZDDP. Results of surface analyses show that the good lubricating properties and excellent load-carrying capacity of nPB in PAO are ascribed to the boundary protecting films, which were composed of some easy-shearing compounds: B2O3, FexBy and Fe2O3.

Tingting Wang,Liang Zhang,Hao Chen,Li Wu,Xinlei Gao

In this study, a systematic test of 36 organic liquid compounds as lubricants in the SiC/PI friction pair was conducted to investigate their friction-reducing performance. The back propagation neural network (BPNN) method was employed to establish a quantitative structure tribo-ability relationship (QSTR) model for the friction performance of these lubricants. The developed BPNN-QSTR model exhibited excellent fitting and predictive accuracy, withR2= 0.9700,R2(LOO) = 0.6570, andq2= 0.8606. The impact of different descriptors in the model on the friction-reducing performance of the lubricants was explored. The results provide valuable guidance for the design and optimization of lubricants in SiC/PI friction systems, contributing to the development of high-performance lubrication systems. Keywords:organic liquid lubricants;quantitative structure tribo-ability relationship;back propagation neural network;friction-reducing performance

The tribological properties and synergistic lubrication mechanism of MoS2/AlOOH nanosheets as lubricant additives

Deping Xia,Yonggang Wang,Hui Liu,Hualin Lin,Sheng Han

The MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites were prepared through a facile one-pot hydrothermal method and subsequently employed as lubricating oil additives to improve the tribological properties of PAO4 base oil. The structure, composition, morphology, tribological properties, and lubrication mechanism of the MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites have been investigated. The results demonstrated that the in-situ assembly of MoS 2 on the surface of AlOOH change their microstructure, resulting in enhanced dispersion and a reduction in friction and wear. At 0.5 wt% concentrations of MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites, the average COF, WSD, and wear volume were decreased by 50.47 %, 42.34 %, and 86.57 % compared to base oil, respectively. Moreover, the tribological behaviors of the PAO4 containing MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites under various conditions were explored as well. Furthermore, based on the analysis of micromorphology and composition of wear surfaces, a synergistic lubrication mechanism for MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites has been proposed, which involves the formation of a tribochemical film composed of Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , MoS 2 , and Al 2 O 3 and demonstrates remarkable capabilities in reducing friction and wear. This research might provide new insight into enhancing the tribological properties of MoS 2 -based additives through the composite method and promote the application of MoS 2 /AlOOH nanocomposites as additives.

Synthesis and Properties Study of a Multifunctional Polymethacrylate Viscosity Index Improver

Weiyan Liao,Chao Ju,Qin Zhao,Wenjing Lou,Xiaobo Wang,Shengmao Zhang

This paper reports on the design, preparation, and characterization of a multifunctional polymethacrylate (PMA) viscosity index improver (VII) that exhibits high oxidative stability and shear stability, which imparts multifunctionality to the viscosity index improver through the introduction of a disulfide pentacyclic ring in lipoic acid. The resulting polymers were added to base oils to investigate their physicochemical and frictional properties. The results demonstrated that, in addition to a significant increase in the viscosity index and high shear stability, the polymers exhibited notable improvements in extreme pressure performance up to 900 N as well as improved antioxidant stability, antiwear, and friction reduction properties. These enhancements were evidenced by a significant reduction in the coefficient of friction and wear volume of the polymers, which decreased by 40% and 92.01%, respectively. Additionally, the polymers exhibited low corrosiveness compared to those of both the base oils and commercial products. Analysis of wear scars revealed that the main formations of protective films were Fe-oxides and Fe-sulfides. This methodology demonstrates the versatility and low corrosiveness of the 1,2-dithiolane-containing viscosity index improver.

Macroscopic superlubricity achieved by poly-L-lysine as an additive at the cemented carbide/steel cutting interface

Yongfeng Yang,Rui Zhang,Shaowen Dong,Xiaoyang Ma,Xiaotao Li,Jinjin Li

To extend tool life and improve machining quality, this study proposes the use of amino acids as lubricant additives to lubricate the cemented carbide/steel cutting interface. The results showed that Poly-L-lysine (PLL) as an additive in ethylene glycol induced macroscopic liquid superlubricity, achieving a remarkably low coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.006, which further decreased to 0.0007 after 4 h, even under high contact pressures of 796 MPa. The achievement of superlubricity resulted from tribofilm generation, with the combined action of this film and the liquid phase effectively reducing frictional pair contact. The PLL additive induced friction reduction and wear resistance may facilitate breakthroughs in advanced cutting fluid formulations for industrial machining and manufacturing processes.
