Drought stress is one of the crucial factors affecting plant growth and development in turfgrass species, especially during the summer season. Exogenous plant growth regulators are an effective and convenient approach to mitigating the adverse effects of drought stress on plant growth. The objectives of this study were to reveal the effects of exogenous carnosine or chitosan on turf performance and physiological indexes in bermudagrass (Cynodon transvaalensis×C. dactylon) in response to drought stress. Bermudagrass was foliar sprayed with carnosine or chitosan, and dose-dependent effects on turf quality were observed under drought stress. Under drought stress, foliar application of either carnosine (0.03%) or chitosan (10 mg L−1) significantly increased turf quality, chlorophyll content, leaf relative water content, and decreased electrolyte leakage, malonaldehyde, and hydrogen peroxide content in comparison with untreated control in bermudagrass. Moreover, exogenous carnosine treatment significantly enhanced the activities of both catalase and peroxidase, but chitosan application only increased catalase activity. The results of this experiment were beneficial to the development of new plant growth regulators and would provide helpful insights for turf management under drought-stressed conditions. Keywords:bermudagrass;drought stress;carnosine;chitosan;antioxidant enzymes

Polypropylene mesh, as a temporary abdominal closure device, may cause mechanical intestine injury and inflammatory response. Chitosan/gelatin hydrogel has excellent biocompatibility, soft and elastic properties. This work is to assess the effects of the chitosan/gelatin hydrogel coated polypropylene mesh on open abdomen wounds. Histological analysis and detection of healing-related factors were conducted to evaluate the inflammation and wound healing process. After 1-day implantation in a murine model of open abdomen, the coated polypropylene mesh, compared with simple polypropylene mesh, demonstrated well protection of the intestine serosa. After 14-day implantation, it reduced the inflammation response by down-regulating the cytokines interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α, and up-regulating the anti-inflammatory factor interleukin-10. Meanwhile, the composite stimulated granulation tissue growth, and promoted matrix deposition and angiogenesis after 7 and 14 days. In conclusion, the modified temporary abdominal closure composite could significantly protect the intestines from mechanical damage and accelerate wound healing.

A simple chiral electrochemical sensor based on N-carboxymethyl chitosan (NCCS) covalently bound with ethylenediamine-carboxylic multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-EA) was developed for enantioselective recognition of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers; NCCS preferably combined with L-Trp than with D-Trp. The recognition efficiency prominently increased after the introduction of N-carboxymethyl into chitosan (CS). The carboxymethyl and imino groups of NCCS play an important role in enantioselective discrimination system. Moreover, the parameters of enantioselective recognition such as pH, temperature and response time were investigated. The electrochemical recognition of amino acid enantiomers with different functional groups was carried out. The chiral recognition mechanism was investigated by quantum computing. The results were confirmed by quantum chemical calculations.

Injectable polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is a widely used bone substitute in cemented arthroplasty, vertebroplasty and osteoporosis fractures. However, due to the inappropriate stiffness, poor bioactivity and high polymerization temperature of PMMA, aseptic loosening of the implanted cement at the bone–cement interface still could be observed in a high rate of patients. To improve the performance of PMMA, artificial extracellular matrices like chitosan–glycerophosphate (CS–GP) thermosensitive hydrogel was introduced into PMMA acting as a pore forming agent and osteoconductive nano-sized hydroxyapatite (nano-HA)/antibiotic gentamicin (GM) as a carrier. It is shown that CS–GP thermosensitive hydrogel can effectively create open pores at the surface of the PMMA cement, which is believed to facilitate bone tissue ingrowth and improve the cement anchorage at the bone–cement interface in future clinical applications. Meanwhile, such a hydrogel effectively decreases the maximum polymerization temperature to below 30 °C, prolongs the working time to more than 720 s and produces cement with a proper modulus of elasticity and a compressive yield strength ranging from 402 to 584 MPa and from 3.1 to 5.9 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporated nano-HA particles sufficiently increase the mineralization capacity of the cement without compromising its mechanical properties and the incorporated GM remarkably enhances the anti-bacterial activity of the cement. More importantly, nano-HA and GM enriched CS–GP thermosensitive hydrogel effectively improve the overall performance of PMMA cement without influencing the cell survival, suggesting the injectable p-PMMA/CS–GP/nano-HA/GM cement will hold strong promise for future bone reconstruction applications.

The present study investigated the effects of oligochitosan, salicylic acid (SA), and Pichia membranaefacien s on inducing disease resistance against Geotrichum candidum in citrus fruit by using iTRAQ proteomic and physico-chemical analysis. Our finding showed that with pre-treatment of oligochitosan, SA and P. membranaefaciens , disease incidences and lesion diameter infected by G. candidum were both significantly reduced. Proteomics analysis indicated that the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were significantly enriched in the pathways of starch and sucrose metabolism, carbon metabolism and amino acid metabolism induced by the three elicitors. Primary metabolites analysis showed that the three elicitors significantly stimulated the accumulation of primary metabolites that closely associated with the defense response such as hexoses, xylose, oxalic acid, proline, glutamate, aspartate, cysteine, etc. Moreover, the marked accumulation of organic acid such as citric acid, α-ketoglutarate, succinic acid, malic acid and fumaric acid which affect the TCA cycle was also observed in three elicitors treated citrus. In conclusion, primary metabolites induced by oligochitosan, SA and P. membranaefaciens behaved as the source of energy and substrates or signaling molecules that directly or indirectly participated in defense responses to against sour rot in citrus fruit.
