Local sympathetic denervation by surgical sympathectomy is used in the treatment of lower limb ulcers and ischemia, but the restoration of cutaneous sympathetic nerve functions is less clear. This study aims to explore the recovery of cutaneous sympathetic functions after bilateral L 2–4 sympathectomy. The skin temperature of the left feet, using a point monitoring thermometer, increased intraoperatively after sympathectomy. The cytoplasm of sympathetic neurons contained tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine β-hydroxylase, visualized by immunofluorescence, indicated the accuracy of sympathectomy. Iodine starch test results suggested that the sweating function of the hind feet plantar skin decreased 2 and 7 weeks after lumbar sympathectomy but had recovered by 3 months. Immunofluorescence and western blot assay results revealed that norepinephrine and dopamine β-hydroxylase expression in the skin from the sacrococcygeal region and hind feet decreased in the sympathectomized group at 2 weeks. Transmission electron microscopy results showed that perinuclear space and axon demyelination in sympathetic cells in the L 5 sympathetic trunks were found in the sympathectomized group 3 months after sympathectomy. Although sympathetic denervation occurred in the sacrococcygeal region and hind feet skin 2 weeks after lumbar sympathectomy, the skin functions recovered gradually over 7 weeks to 3 months. In conclusion, sympathetic functional recovery may account for the recurrence of hyperhidrosis after sympathectomy and the normalization of sympathetic nerve trunks after incomplete injury. The recovery of sympathetic nerve function was slower in the limbs than in the torso after bilateral L 2–4 sympathectomy.

The compositions of sweat and blood are related. Therefore, sweat is an ideal noninvasive test body fluid that could replace blood for linear detection of many biomarkers, especially blood glucose. However, access to sweat samples remains limited to physical exercise, thermal stimulation, or electrical stimulation. Despite intensive research, a continuous, innocuous, and stable method for sweat stimulation and detection has not yet been developed. In this study, a nanomaterial for a sweat-stimulating gel based on the transdermal drug delivery system is presented, which transports acetylcholine chloride into the receptors of sweat glands to achieve the function of biological stimulation of skin sweating. The nanomaterial was applied to a suitable integrated sweat glucose detection device for noninvasive blood glucose monitoring. The total amount of evaporated sweat enabled by the nanomaterial is up to 35 μL·cm–2 for 24 h, and the device detects up to 17.65 μM glucose under optimal conditions, showing stable performance regardless of the user’s activity level. In addition, the in vivo test was performed and compared with several studies and products, which showed excellent detection performance and osmotic relationship. The nanomaterial and associated integrated device represent a significant advance in continuous passive sweat stimulation and noninvasive sweat glucose measurement for point-of-care applications.

Janus fabrics with moisture management enable directional water transport from the inner hydrophobic layer to the outer hydrophilic region, contributing to personalized moisture comfort. However, when the human body sweats profusely in high-temperature/high-humidity environments or during intense physical activities, current Janus fabrics encounter a daunting challenge of being saturated by sweat, generating unpleasant stuffiness and tight adhesion to the skin. Herein, inspired by the sweat glands in human skin, we propose an innovative “sweating fabric” with a uniquely patterned structure that features physical and chemical asymmetry, towards directional sweat accumulation and droplet rolling capabilities for high-performance personal moisture management. Unlike existing Janus fabrics where sweat permeates, spreads, and evaporates, our “sweating fabric” facilitates directional sweat transport to the outer surface where the sweat reaggregates into liquid droplets that drip off rather than spread or evaporate. By creatively constructing patterned water transport channels with asymmetric pore structure and wettability, each water transport channel of the “sweating fabric” has an outstanding directional water transport rate of 12.2 mL cm −2 min −1 while rendering sweat droplets to slide easily [sliding angle of (45 ± 2)°], which enables sustainable and swift sweat transport, thus opening ample opportunities for advanced fiber materials for wound care, biofluid monitoring, and microfluid control. Traditional human emotion recognition is based on electroencephalogram (EEG) data collection technologies which rely on plenty of rigid electrodes and lack anti-interference, wearing comfort, and portability. Moreover, a significant distribution difference in EEG data also results in low classification accuracy. Here, on-skin biosensors with adhesive and hydrophobic bilayer hydrogel (AHBH) as interfaces for high accuracy emotion classification are proposed. The AHBH achieves remarkable adhesion (59.7 N m −1 ) by combining the adhesion mechanism of catechol groups and electrostatic attraction. Meanwhile, based on the synergistic effects of hydrophobic group rearrangements and surface energy reduction, the AHB-hydrophobic layer exhibits 133.87° water contact angles through hydrophobic treatment of only 0.5 h. Hydrogen and electrostatic bonds are also introduced to form a seamless adhesive-hydrophobic hydrogel interface and inhibit adhesion attenuation, respectively. With the AHBH as an ideal device/skin interface, the biosensor can reliably collect high-quality electrophysiological signals even under vibration, sweating, and long-lasting monitoring condition. Furthermore, the on-skin electrodes, data processing, and wireless modules are integrated into a portable headband for EEG-based emotion classification. A domain adaptive neural network based on the transfer learning technique is introduced to alleviate the effect of domain shift and achieve high classification accuracy.

The prolonged health monitoring using wearable technology faces challenges stemming from perspiration, including bacterial proliferation, compromised adhesion, signal quality deterioration, and user discomfort. Notably, excessive sweat fosters bacterial colonization, escalating infection risks, and compromising biomarker analysis. Existing antibacterial approaches, unfortunately, risk disrupting the delicate balance of skin microbiota. To address this, a Janus patch featuring Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) modification is developed, which exhibits sustained antibacterial properties while preserving the epidermal microecology. It integrates a hydrophilic LDH fabric that mechanically eradicates bacteria via a nanoknife effect, and a laser-engraved medical adhesive with microholes for unidirectional sweat transport. This innovative design not only enhances adhesion stability but also safeguards the skin microbiome by preventing direct contact with Zn-Al LDH. Moreover, the patch seamlessly interfaces with sweat-monitoring technologies like microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (uPADs) sensors, ensuring 100% antibacterial efficacy and efficient sweat redirection for reliable detection while prioritizing user comfort. It can serve as a durable bridge between perspiring skin and epidermal sensors, revolutionizing the realm of long-term health monitoring.
