Construction of Low-Energy Prepared Highly Stable Surfactant Emulsion by Optimizing Composition Configuration

Fang Wang,Cheng Ma,Jianbin Huang

Emulsion systems that are independent of preparation conditions and time are ideal models for fundamental emulsion research. However, special strategies are required to form these emulsions, particularly with commonly used oils and emulsifiers that have proven to be more difficult. In this study, an efficient approach to preparing a low-energy emulsion with outstanding stability is reported. This approach is derived from a comprehensive study of the component composition in the residual emulsified fractions in water-separation emulsions. The outstandingly stable emulsion exhibits a highly stacked droplet structure, which can restrict the droplet movement within the disperse medium, accompanied by a stable oil–water interface layer, which can hinder the molecular exchange between droplets and resist droplet destruction under extreme conditions, thereby preventing the demulsification caused by sedimentation, coalescence, and Ostwald ripening. These peculiarities enable the emulsion to remain stable over long periods and at elevated temperatures, even exhibiting a spontaneous tendency to recover to the emulsion after centrifugal phase splitting. This approach lends itself to generalization in the context of multiple surfactants or oil phases, thus establishing a foundation for the study of various emulsifiers and functional emulsions. Moreover, the low-energy-input preparation can reduce energy consumption in the emulsion production, aligning with the principles of green development.

A colorimetric indicator-displacement assay for cysteine sensing based on a molecule-exchange mechanism

Zhonghua Xue,Xiaoxia Fu,Honghong Rao,Mohammed Hassan Ibrahim,Lulu Xiong,Xiuhui Liu,Xiaoquan Lu

In this study, we developed an ingenious yet effective strategy for cysteine detection. The colorimetric cysteine assay is established through an indicator displacement process, where Cu 2+ and pyrocatechol violet (PV) was employed as receptor and indicator, respectively. Proof-of-concept trials demonstrated that the stronger binding affinity of Cu 2+ receptor toward cysteine than PV indicator endowed our colorimetric sensor with high selectivity and excellent sensitivity as well as with a lower detection limit (4.60   μM and 120   µM, S/N =3) by UV–visible spectroscopy and the naked eye as the signal readout, respectively. More importantly, the proposed molecule-exchange process in the indicator displacement process could be successfully used to the fabrication of a colorimetric INHIBIT logic gate and even converted into a facile naked eye analysis through paper-based analytical devices for conveniently and reliably detecting cysteine (CySH) in practical applications.

The Mechanism and New Strategy on Competitive Release Effect of β-Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes

Yingjie Fu,Hui Xi,Dingzhong Wang,Wenqian Sun,Jiaming Zhao,Peng Li,Binbin Lu,Shitong Zeng,Qingzhao Shi,Weichen Zhang,Shihao Sun

Competitive release is an important release pattern of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes. Releasing flavor by absorbing harmful molecules is an ideal situation. Thus, two inclusion complexes, phenethyl alcohol β-CD inclusion (PACD) and phenol β-CD inclusion (PNCD), were prepared and their combining capacity was studied. The binding constant of PNCD was over 9 times more than PACD. PN could accelerate the release of PACD by entering the empty β-CD, revealing competitive release effect. However, we noticed that weak-combining molecules also induced competitive release effect. PACD and PNCD were treated with several different competitors, demonstrating that the release behavior of β-CD inclusion complexes could be controlled by changing competitors. However, the process lasted much longer for “weak” molecules to exchange “strong” ones. The mechanism of competitive release of β-CD inclusion complexes was conforming to chemical equilibrium theory. The release rate could be adjusted by changing the competitors with different concentration and different combining capacity. Moreover, solid inclusion complexes could interact with gaseous competitors, revealing competitive release effect. Competitive release effect could achieve the release of flavor while absorbing harmful molecules. Also, combining capacity or solvent condition was not the determination of competitive release effect, but also an adjustment strategy for molecule release, largely expanding the application of β-CD inclusion complexes.

Molecular Exchange of Dynamic Imine Bond for the Etching of Polymer Particles

Jie Mao,Tong Wu,Zhenbin Tang,Long Xia,Liu He,Birong Zeng,Yiting Xu,Conghui Yuan,Lizong Dai

The underlying trend of colloidal synthesis has focused on extending the structure and composition complexity of colloidal particles. Hollow and yolk–shell particles are successful examples that have potential applications in frontier fields. In this paper, a facile and controllable etching method based on the molecular exchange of the dynamic imine bond to generate cavities in polymer particles is developed. Starting from boronate ester polymer particles and inorganic@boronate core–shell particles with the imine bonds incorporated in the polymer networks, the etching method easily affords hollow and yolk–shell particles with tunable shell thicknesses. The molecular exchange dynamics analysis indicates that guest amine molecules cause the reconstruction of imine bonds and the leakage of molecular and oligomer fragments, resulting in the formation of the hollow structure. This molecular exchange-based etching method may be of interest in the construction of polymer architectures with increased composition and structure complexities.

Intestinal Villi-Inspired Mathematically Base-Layer Engineered Microneedles (IMBEMs) for Effective Molecular Exchange during Biomarker Enrichment and Drug Deposition in Diversified Mucosa

Yusheng Gong,Shuai Tong,Xixuan Li,Xiuli Chen,Yushuang Liu,Nan Li,Jiarong Xu,Rengui Xu,Yusong Guo,Fei Xiao,Xiaoyuan Chen,Wei Chen

The mucosa-interfacing systems based on bioinspired engineering design for sampling/drug delivery have manifested crucial potential for the monitoring of infectious diseases and the treatment of mucosa-related diseases. However, their efficiency and validity are severely restricted by limited contact area for molecular transfer and dissatisfactory capture/detachment capability. Herein, inspired by the multilayer villus structure of the small intestine that enables high nutrient absorption, a trigonometric function-based periodic pattern was fabricated and integrated on the base layer of the microneedle patch, exhibiting a desirable synergistic effect with needle tips for deep sample enrichment and promising molecular transfer, significantly improving the device-mucosa bidirectional interaction. Moreover, mathematical modeling and finite element analysis were adopted to visualize and quantify the microcosmic molecular transmission process, guiding parameter optimization in actual situation. Encouragingly, these intestinal villi-inspired mathematically base-layer engineered microneedles (IMBEMs) have demonstrated distinguished applicability among mucosa tissue with varying surface curvatures, tissue toughness, and local environments, and simultaneously, have gained favorable support from healthy volunteers receiving preliminary test of IMBEMs patches. Overall, validated by numerous in vitro and in vivo tests, the IMBEMs were confirmed to act as a promising candidate to facilitate mucosa-based sampling and topical drug delivery, indicating highly clinical translation potential.

Revitalizing liver function in mice with liver failure through transplantation of 3D-bioprinted liver with expanded primary hepatocytes

Bo Deng,Yue Ma,Jialyu Huang,Runbang He,Miaomiao Luo,Lina Mao,Enhua Zhang,Yuanyuan Zhao,Xiaoli Wang,Qiangsong Wang,Mingchang Pang,Yilei Mao,Huayu Yang,Lanxia Liu,Pengyu Huang

The utilization of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology to create a transplantable bioartificial liver emerges as a promising remedy for the scarcity of liver donors. This study outlines our strategy for constructing a 3D-bioprinted liver, using in vitro–expanded primary hepatocytes recognized for their safety and enhanced functional robustness as hepatic cell sources for bioartificial liver construction. In addition, we have developed bioink biomaterials with mechanical and rheological properties, as well as printing capabilities, tailored for 3D bioprinting. Upon heterotopic transplantation into the mesentery of tyrosinemia or 90% hepatectomy mice, our 3D-bioprinted liver effectively restored lost liver functions, consequently extending the life span of mice afflicted with liver injuries. Notably, the inclusion of an artificial blood vessel in our 3D-bioprinted liver allowed for biomolecule exchange with host blood vessels, demonstrating, in principle, the rapid integration of the bioartificial liver into the host vascular system. This model underscores the therapeutic potential of transplantation for the treatment of liver failure diseases.

Dynamic reversible mechanism of phenol-carbamate bonds and their potential for the development of thermo-healing, recyclable and high-performance epoxy thermosets

Jingjing Qin,Liyan Liang,Xiaohong Liu,Jiaming Liu,Dingsong Wang,Min Shi,Chaolong Yang

In this paper, a series of small monomers were synthesized to explore the dynamic reversible properties of phenol-carbamate bonds (PCBs), and the bimolecular exchange mechanism of PCBs was verified. Based on this mechanism, a novel thermo-healing recyclable epoxy resin with high mechanical performance and shape memory function was successfully developed. Meanwhile, the number of reversible phenol-carbamate bonds in this system was increased by molecular structure design, which increased the chance of reversible cleavage and recombination of the dynamic covalent bonds . Compared with our previous work, the thermo-healing efficiency of the epoxy thermosets was greatly increased, and the target polymer achieved an excellent balance between high thermo-healing efficiency and good mechanical performance. Further post-treatment experiments show that the cured epoxy resin can also be well recycled by solvent degradation or hot-pressing process. What's more, a novel carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polymer composite material was synthesized by taking that prepared epoxy thermoset as a matrix, which greatly improve the mechanical properties of epoxy resin, and the CF cloths can be recycled when the epoxy resin is removed by chemical degradation . In addition, due to the existence of reversible crystallizable switching segments in the epoxy resin system, when the temperature is above its T g , it can be triggered by thermal energy, so that the film can rapidly recover from the temporary shape to the permanent shape. This study also provides a new direction for the development of novel multifunctional intelligent polymers.
