Atomic layer deposition precisely modified zeolite 13X: Physicochemical synergistic adsorption of space molecular contaminants

Yang Li,Wenjing Wei,Jiaqi Chen,Lijie Zu,Yan Zhou,Jinzhu Wu,Xiaohong Wu

In spaceflight applications, molecular contamination control has become one of the most challenging issues. Porous zeolites are a potent molecular adsorbent with advantages of efficient adsorption at low pressure and/or high temperature, high interaction with adsorbates, and superior durability in extreme environments. Herein, zeolite 13X pellets were selected for adsorption of stearyl alcohol (C 18 H 37 OH) as a target molecular contaminant. Considering the excellent hydrophilicity of the zeolite 13X which limits the adsorption of most hydrophobic organic molecules, modification of the zeolite 13X by deposition of TiO 2 via atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology was performed. Results show that ALD-grown TiO 2 not only improves hydrophobicity but also renders high activity, whilst retains the hierarchical pores of the zeolites. As a result, the as-prepared zeolite 13X@TiO 2 exhibits efficient adsorption toward trace stearyl alcohol under low pressure through the synergistic contribution of physisorption and chemisorption. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, molecular dynamic (MD) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further discover that pore wall surfaces are primary adsorption sites for the physisorption while ALD-grown TiO 2 provides active sites for the chemisorption.

Incorporation of ZnO Nanoislands in Nanoporous Zeolite 13X for the Adsorption of Molecular Contaminants in Outer Space

Xianghua Gong,Yang Li,Jinzhu Wu,Hongjun Kang,Xiaohong Wu

Recently, zeolites have been selected as a potential adsorbent for capturing space molecular contaminants owing to their strong adsorption ability and extreme stability in a harsh environment. Considering the adsorption process in a vacuum environment, enhancement of the adsorption performance of the zeolites is required. Unfortunately, up to now, the improved adsorption behavior for the space molecular contaminants of the modified zeolite adsorbent under ultralow pressure has rarely been reported. Herein, a 13X/ZnO adsorbent was prepared by incorporating ZnO nanoislands into the nanoporous zeolite 13X via atomic layer deposition (ALD). It is found that a representative 13X/ZnO-50 exhibits an increased adsorption capacity toward dimethyl phthalate and the outgassing species of J133 adhesive even under the ultralow pressure of 10–5 Pa. This could be attributed to the synergistic effects of physical interactions and chemical adsorption associated with the unique cage structure of the zeolite and the incorporated ALD-grown ZnO nanoislands. This work provides a useful strategy for developing the adsorbents used in space molecular contamination control during space missions.

Quaternized carbon-based nanoparticles embedded positively charged composite membranes towards efficient removal of cationic small-sized contaminants

Yuefei Song,Yongxin Wang,Nan Zhang,Xifan Li,Xueshuang Bai,Tiemei Li

This present work validated the feasibility of high-efficient removal of series of cationic small-sized contaminants such as pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), dyes and hardness-forming ions in aqueous solution by novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. Thanks to the positively participated effect on interfacial polymerization for both nanostructured quaternized carbon-based nanoparticles (QCBNPs), skin-layer characteristics including smoothness, wettability and positive charge as well as nanoporous loose body (porosity, thickness) of the resultant TFN membranes were all markedly improved after doping modification. On this basis, compared with the neat thin-film composite membrane , these modified TFN membranes showed perfect mirror-symmetric transformation in the rejection orders of the selected electrolytes, dyes and PhACs with different charge properties, respectively. Of course, these changes were all accomplished in the process of increasing each small-sized contaminant removal rate, membrane permeability and fouling resistance. Specifically, the optimal TFN-QCQDs membrane possessed high permeate flux of 23.8 L m −2 ·h −1  bar −1 , 99.7%, 99.5%, 98.9%, 98.4% and 95.7% rejection rates for cationic trimethoprim, atenolol, rhodamine B, methylene blue and MgCl 2 , flux recovery ratio of 85.5%, which increased by 53.6%, 6.75%, 5.96%, 2.17%, 2.21%, 17.0% and 29.6%, respectively, compared with the neat membrane. In brief, both QCBNPs embedded nanocomposite membranes provide good alternative options for efficient and sustainable removing series of cationic small-sized contaminants by one step.

Preparation of attapulgite nanoparticles modified polypropylene adsorption membrane and its application in small molecular pollutant adsorption

Shuaibin Wu

In this study, a novel surface covalent reaction method was used to modify attapulgite nanoparticles on the surface of polypropylene adsorption membrane to adsorb various small molecular pollutants for the first time. The surface covalent reaction method has the advantage of step control. Therefore, the uniformity and stability of attapulgite nanoparticles can be ensured, and then could effectively improve the adsorption performance of polypropylene adsorption membrane. On the other hand, compared with various materials modified on the surface of polypropylene adsorption membrane currently, attapulgite nanoparticles has the characteristics of low cost and environmental friendliness, which is more conducive to the large-scale practical application. The polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffractograph, and it was confirmed that the attapulgite nanoparticles was successfully modified on the surface of the polypropylene adsorption membrane. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacities of polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles could reach 11.53 mg/g, 8.7 mg/g and 5.78 mg/g for cyromazine, malachite green and dagenan respectively within 10 s. In the case of the above three analytes, the minimum detected concentration could reach 0.02 mg/mL, and the relative standard deviation was about 10 %. At the same time, the adsorption performance of polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles did not decrease significantly after 50 cycles. A standard recovery of 76.8 % − 89.5 % and a relative standard deviation of 7.2 % − 15.2 % were obtained by using the polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles to adsorb cyromazine in cucumber skin samples, indicating that the polypropylene adsorption membrane modified with attapulgite nanoparticles has the ability to treat complex samples.

Efficient removal of water pollutants by hierarchical porous zeolite-activated carbon prepared from coal gangue and bamboo

Hui Li,Mingjun Li,Feng Zheng,Jing Wang,Lai Chen,Pengfei Hu,Qiang Zhen,Sajid Bashir,Jingbo Louise Liu

The inorganic heavy metal ions (IHMIs) and organic macromolecular pollutants (OMPs) are the two most common pollutants in industrial, agricultural and municipal wastewater. They have greatly threatened the environmental security and human health because of their most notorious toxicity and carcinogenicity . In this study, a composite of zeolite-activated carbon is synthesized taking coal gangue as silicon and aluminum sources and adding bamboo as carbon source through a facile calcining process following a hydrothermal process. The obtained zeolite-activated carbon composite is a kind of hierarchical porous structure , which contains a large number of micro-pores, meso-pores and macro-pores simultaneously. The zeolite-activated carbon with high specific surface area of 879.1 m 2 /g is used to absorb IHMIs and OMPs. It shows high adsorption capacities for copper ions (Cu 2+ , 104.9 mg/g) and Rhodamine-B (Rh–B, 83.34 mg/g). The zeolite with a large number of micro-pores could chain a lot of IHMIs with small diameters, and the activated carbon could allow large size OMPs into its meso-pores and macro-pores. The thermodynamic and kinetic studies indicate that the adsorption of adsorbates onto the zeolite-activated carbon composite is assigned to a monolayer, spontaneous and physical adsorption. Thus the zeolite-activated carbon composite could adsorb the pollutants quickly and desorb them repeatedly. This research not only effectively deals with the IHMIs and OMPs in the waterbody, but also converts the coal gangue into high value-added product. Therefore, this study provides a facile method to synthesize zeolite-activated carbon composite from solid waste and biomass material. The prepared zeolite-activated carbon composite could be selected as a potential candidate for sewage treatment .

Ordered plasmonic bowl structures as SALDI-MS platform for sensitive detection of small molecule pollutants in environment and food

Jingtong Zhai,Chunning Chen,Jiaxin Lu,Hongkun Zhao,Nan Lu

The sensitive detection of small molecule pollutants in environment and food is crucial for safeguarding public health and maintaining ecological balance. Although surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) has shown great potential in small molecule analysis, its widespread application is hindered by limited laser desorption/ionization (LDI) efficiency and poor signal repeatability. A key challenge lies in developing substrates that can overcome these limitations. In this study, we address this critical issue by preparing an ordered plasmonic bowl structure as an advanced SALDI-MS substrate. The unique bowl structure significantly enhances localized surface plasmon resonance effects—particularly at the edges, bottoms, and inter-bowl gaps—facilitating the efficient generation and migration of hot electrons, which improves LDI efficiency. Additionally, the large contact area of the bowl structures increases the hotspot density, thereby amplifying analyte signal intensity. This substrate enables the sensitive detection of small molecule pollutants (dye molecules, antibiotics, and pesticides) over a broad concentration range from 1 mM to 100 nM. The ordered plasmonic bowl substrate presents a promising platform for the rapid and sensitive detection of small molecule pollutants in environmental and food samples.
