Hierarchical HZSM-5 with tunable acidity, zeolitic crystallinity, and porosity were prepared using different organosilanes and used for the production of aromatics from the catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of rice straw. As the chain length of organosilanes changed, the composition of the products including aromatics and coke varied greatly. Additionally, the introduction of ammonium ions into organosilanes led to a lower yield of aromatics and a higher yield of coke. Transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of NH3, N2 adsorption–desorption (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller), and X-ray diffraction were used to explore the influence of the morphological structure, acidity distribution, textural properties, and crystallinity on the CFP of rice straw. The results indicated that the crystallinity, textural properties, and total acidity had a great influence on the synthesis of aromatics.

The limitation in bio-oil quality hampers its further utilization in the fuel or chemical industry. This study employed a combination of tetra propylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and NaOH solutions for HZSM-5 desilication to enhance the yield of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the catalytic co-pyrolysis of wheat straw with polyethylene. Results revealed hierarchical HZSM-5, prepared with equal mole concentrations of NaOH and TPAOH, exhibited optimal catalytic performance. The bio-oil from this process had an aromatic content of 72 %, with monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) constituting 56.26 %. Further optimization was achieved through iron modification of hierarchical HZSM-5. The addition of 0.5 % iron-modified hierarchical HZSM-5 increased the aromatic hydrocarbons to 80.57 %, with BTX compounds (benzene, toluene, and xylene) reaching a selectivity of 61.9 %. This approach reduced polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), contributing to less coke formation, presenting a promising method for high-quality bio-oil.

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the effective methods to upgrade biomass pyrolysis oil, but the development of a low-cost, high-performance HDO catalyst still faces enormous challenges. In this work, a facile and eco-friendly approach is developed to synthesize the Ni2P@hierarchical HZSM-5 catalyst. Structure and acidity of the catalyst can be controlled by simply adjusting the proportions of ammonia solution and the silicon to aluminum ratio, which are closely related to the performance of the catalyst. Experimental results reveal that the Ni2P@hierarchical HZSM-5 catalyst with Si/Al = 85 under NH3·H2O/Ni = 14 exhibits the highest activity of 98% guaiacol conversion, along with a 78.8% yield of cyclohexane (reaction conditions: 300 °C, 3 MPa H2). In addition, the guaiacol reaction network is provided.

The hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolite was prepared successfully by a simple NaOH treatment method. The concentration of NaOH solution was carefully tuned to optimal the zeolite acidity and pore structure. Under NaOH treatment conditions, a large number of mesopores, which interconnected with the retained micropores, were created to facilitate mass transfer performance. There are very good correlations between the decline of the relative zeolite crystallinity and the loss of micropores volume. The Ni nanoclusters were uniformly confined in the mesopores of hierarchical HZSM-5 by the excessive impregnation method. The direct deoxygenation in N2and hydrodeoxygenation in H2of the methyl laurate were compared respectively over the Ni/HZSM-5 catalysts. In the N2atmosphere, the deoxygenation rate of the methyl laurate on the Ni/HZSM-5 catalyst is relatively slow. In the presence of H2, the synergistic effect between the hydrogenation function of the metal and the acid function of the zeolite supports can make the deoxygenation level more obvious. The yield of hydrocarbon products gradually reached the maximum with the appropriate treatment concentration of 1M NaOH, which could be attributed to the improved mass transfer in the hierarchical HZSM-5 supports.

Co-feeding of waste plastics during biomass catalytic fast pyrolysis can improve remarkably the yield of aromatic hydrocarbons. In this work, the simulated biomass by using its model components of cellulose, xylan, and lignin at different proportions was Co-CFP with LDPE to investigate the synergistic reaction mechanism between biomass and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) over hierarchical HZSM-5. Results showed that biomass and its model components were oxygen-enriched feedstock, while LDPE was the hydrogen-enriched feedstock with H/C eff over 2. The synergistic effect between biomass model components and LDPE was ordered as cellulose and LDPE > xylan and LDPE > lignin and LDPE. Because pyrolysis of cellulose produced higher yield of furans than that of xylan and lignin which acted as the key synergistic compounds in Diels-Alder reaction to form light aromatics. The transfer of hydrogen free radical from the LDPE-derived hydrocarbons to the biomass-derived oxygenates promoted the deoxygenation reaction of oxygenates in hierarchical HZSM-5. Diels-Alder reaction between furans and olefins was the key synergistic reaction which highly improved the yield of hydrocarbon aromatics. In general, the difference of the pyrolysis oxygenated intermediate among the biomass pseudo components resulted in different yields of light aromatics, where cellulose presented highest extent of synergistic reaction to LDPE.

High energy consumption during the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) desorption process in amine-based CO 2 capture technology is a crucial hindrance to achieving carbon neutrality. HZSM-5 is one of the most widely reported solid acid catalysts used in primary amine regeneration. This work compared a series of HZSM-5 zeolites with different Si/Al ratios in terms of CO 2 desorption performance. To further enhance catalytic activity, hierarchical HZSM-5 was synthesized by the dealumination and desilication re-assembly method with different acid and alkali concentrations. The experimental results suggested that desilication by modification in sodium hydroxide resulted in a significant improvement of mesoporous surface area. The NaOH-0.4 catalyst could improve the amount of desorbed CO 2 by 40.3% and decrease the relative heat duty by 28.5%. And the cyclic tests revealed that catalytic activity was well preserved in the recycling process. Moreover, the structure and acidity of modification samples were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR), Nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiment, temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), Pyridine-adsorption infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characterization results suggested that the synergistic effect of larger mesoporous surface area and total acid sites was important to enhance catalytic CO 2 desorption performance. These results showed a new understanding of catalyst design for CO 2 capture technology by modifying the structure of the catalyst support.
