The effects of different dispersed phases of MXene nanosheets on polyamide nanofiltration membranes, which was first reported in this investigation, are still unclear. We found that when the MXene nanosheets were dispersed into the aqueous phase, the cross-linking degree of the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction was low, thereby forming a rough and thin polyamide layer with nanovoids, which increased the pure water flux to 14.1 L m2– h–1 bar–1. When the MXene nanosheets were dispersed into the organic phase, the IP reaction was more thorough with a high degree of cross-linking. Therefore, the salt rejection was higher, with 99.1% of Na2SO4 rejection. We believe that different dispersed phases for 2D nanosheets had different impacts on the IP reaction and polyamide layer and we hope this study can provide ideas for selecting a suitable dispersed phase to develop optimization strategies.

The dispersed phase holdup and drop size in solvent extraction columns vary along the column height and this affects the mass transfer coefficient and interfacial area. In this article, mass transfer study was performed experimentally using a 25 mm diameter agitated pulsed column. The axial distribution of mass transfer coefficient was determined by coupling population balance equation and axial dispersion model by taking the longitudinal variation in hydrodynamic performance into consideration. Feasibility of different mass transfer models in predicting concentration profiles was evaluated and a novel correlation based on effective diffusivity was developed. The results showed that both overall and volumetric mass transfer coefficients have significant change along the column height and greatly depends on the agitation speed and pulsation intensity. Increasing dispersed phase velocity also augments the overall mass transfer coefficient. The maximum number of transfer unit was measured to be 10 m −1 at agitation speed of 1000 rpm.

The branched amphiphilic copolymer of N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) methacrylamide and polyether macromonomer (DA) can gather a large number of oil droplets and bubbles together to form oil aerated flocs, and cooperate with air-flotation cyclone separation device to achieve efficient oil-water separation. In this paper, the effects of DA and linear cationic flocculant polymethylacryloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride (PDMC) on interaction between dispersed phases in produced water were studied from the microscopic point of view, and the reason why oil aerated flocs can be formed under the action of DA was analyzed. Firstly, the aggregation behaviors of the dispersed phases (including oil droplets and bubbles) in water were studied intuitively by microfluidic experiment. Then, the interaction between oil droplets and the interaction between oil droplet and bubble were studied by optical tweezers and oil-coated bubbles experiments, respectively. The experimental results showed that both the efficiencies of oil droplets coalescence and oil droplet-bubble adhesion of DA were 5 times higher than that of PDMC at concentration of 500 mg/L. DA can enhance the attraction force between oil droplets while PDMC cannot. The film drainage time of oil droplet-bubble adhesion of DA was 3 times shorter than that of PDMC. The increasing temperature and salinity had the negative effect on the film drainage oil droplet-bubble adhesion of DA. In addition, the type of attraction force between oil droplets under action of DA still needs analysis and the generation reason needs molecular dynamics simulation study. The research results of this paper can give a guide to the development of DA type flocculants.

Process intensification equipment is playing an increasingly role in the emulsion process. A novel rotating solid foam stirrer tank (RSFST) is developed in this work to try to intensify the liquid–liquid emulsification process. The effects of operating parameters and physical parameters, such as emulsification time, rotational speed, packing size, dispersed phase volume fraction, and continuous-phase viscosity, on the droplet size distribution and Sauter mean diameter d32 of oil-in-water emulsions produced in RSFST were investigated using a kerosene–water system. To benchmark the emulsion performance of the RSFST, a Rushton stirrer is used a reference stirrer and the generated droplet size and average energy dissipation rate as the evaluation metrics. Based on the experimental data of emulsification under different operating conditions and physical parameters, models are applied to describe the bimodal distribution of oil-in-water emulsion droplet sizes, and correlation is proposed to predict the Sauter mean diameter d32 of RSFST. This work provides fundamental data for practical applications of RSFST used in emulsion process intensification.

In this work, a 30 mm diameter pulsed disc and doughnut solvent extraction column was used for impurities removal from nickel cobalt complex hydroxide acid solution by solvent extraction. The effects of dispersed phase velocity, continuous phase velocity and pulse intensity on drop diameter, dispersed phase holdup and mass transfer were investigated. The results show that the drop size decreases gradually, and the dispersed phase holdup decreased initially and then increased with the increase of pulse intensity. The dispersed phase holdup increases with the increase of dispersed phase velocity but is independent of the continuous phase velocity. The experimental data of this study are predicted by correlations with regressed parameters. The average absolute relative error of drop size and dispersed phase holdup were 10.07 % and 18.28 %. With the increase of pulse intensity, the extraction efficiency of impurities decreased firstly and then increased. The number of mass transfer units and the height of mass transfer unit were calculated. The trend of number of mass transfer units of impurities are similar to extraction efficiency. Mass transfer results indicate that pulsed disc and doughnut column can be applied to the nickel cobalt complex hydroxide acid solution-P204/kerosene system.

The pulse disc and doughnut columns (PDDC) require high energy input when dealing with systems where the dispersed phase is difficult to break, which limits its application. To address this, a novel extraction column, pulsed sieve − disc and doughnut column (PSDDC) was designed. The hydrodynamics and extraction performance in the PSDDC were investigated systematically using neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnet scraps acid leachate–PC-88A extractant system. The results indicated that inducing sieve plates effectively reduced droplet size at a mild pulse intensity. Furthermore, compared with the required pulse intensity of 1.5 cm/s to shift operation zone from mixer-settler zone to emulsion zone in PDDC, PSDDC only required 1.0 cm/s. In the mixer-settler zone, the dispersed phase holdup ( x d ) values were comparable in both columns, while in the emulsion zone the x d values in PSDDC were higher than those in PDDC. At a medium pulse intensity of 1.5 cm/s, the extraction performance of rare earth elements (REEs) in the PSDDC was enhanced, with an extraction efficiency of 65.19 %, representing a 6-fold increase over the PDDC. Additionally, new correlations were established for the Sauter mean droplet size ( d 32 ), x d and mass transfer coefficients of dispersed phase ( K od ) in PSDDC, yielding average relative residual errors ( AARE s) of 9.43 %, 10.96 %, and 10.04 %, respectively. Briefly, compared with PDDC, PSDDC exhibited excellent extraction performance for REEs in the NdFeB acid leachate–PC-88A system.

The synergetic effect of a reactive compatibilizer and organo-montmorillonite (OMMT) on phase morphology and properties of polyamide 6 (PA6)/polydimethylsilicone (PDMS) blend with a high viscosity ratio of dispersed phase and matrix was studied. A small amount of an amine-terminated copolymer of polyether amine (PEA) and PDMS (PDMS-b-PEA) as a reactive compatibilizer can significantly decrease the dispersed phase domain size. However, the dispersed phase domain size has still been above 2 μm even when the PDMS-b-PEA concentration reaches 5 wt %. OMMT as the second additive can further dramatically decrease the dispersed phase domain size due to the barrier effect for effectively preventing the coalescence of the dispersed phase domain. Moreover, the presence of PDMS-b-PEA can promote the uniform dispersion of OMMT. The synergetic effect of PDMS-b-PEA and OMMT can also improve tensile properties and decrease water absorption.

Water-in-water (W/W) emulsions have emerged as a promising vehicle for delivering water-soluble compounds within food industry. However, in conventional W/W emulsions, the phase with a lower volume fraction typically serves as the dispersed phase, resulting in limited encapsulation capacity for bioactive substances. In this work, the relationships between the chemistry, wettability of chitosan-based colloidal particles (CS-based CPs), and the type, stability of W/W emulsion were investigated to gain deep insight into the phase inversion mechanism within a dextran-polyethylene glycol (Dex-PEG) aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) at a molecular level. The results demonstrated that the type of W/W emulsions can be tailored through manipulating the chemistry and wettability of CS-based CPs, independent of altering the phase volume ratios. Finally, highly dispersed phase emulsions (HDPEs) with Dex as the dispersed phase in PEG (D/P HDPEs) were fabricated by tuning the chemistry and wettability of CS-based CPs, which were then employed for the encapsulation of riboflavin. The encapsulation capacity significantly improved from 25 % (traditional W/W emulsions) to 66.7 % (D/P HDPEs stabilized by CS-based CPs). The fabrication of D/P HDPEs offers a novel strategy for delivering water-soluble bioactive substances with high encapsulation capacity, showing strong potential for applications in low-fat, low-calorie functional foods.
