Xuequan Li,Liting Lai,Fangdi Wu,Wenju Xie,Junshao Liu

To improve the performance of electrochemical capacitors, there is a notable focus on carbon materials characterized by a large surface area, reasonable pore size, pore size distribution, appropriate electronic conductivity, and excellent chemical durability. Herein, the hierarchical porous carbon aerogel originating from sodium alginate (SA) with well-defined porosity are proposed. The resultant hierarchical porous carbon aerogel shows a substantial specific surface area of 2050.6 m2g−1with macropores, mesopores and micropores confirmed by techniques such as TEM, SEM, BET, etc., resulting from a sequence of aerogel formation-carbonization-activation. By electrochemical measurement, the hierarchical porous carbon aerogel exhibits a specific capacitance of 204 F g−1at an operating current density of 0.2 A g−1employing 6 M KOH aqueous solution. The hierarchical carbon aerogel displays outstanding cycling stability with a 96.2% capacity maintenance for 10,000 cycles at an operating current density of 1 A g−1. High-efficiency adsorption of Cr(VI) and RhB by hierarchical porous carbon prepared from coal gangue

Jinxiong Wu,Xiuling Yan,Li Li,Jiahua Gu,Ting Zhang,Lanlan Tian,Xintai Su,Zhang Lin

Coal gangue (CG) is one of the largest industrial solid wastes in the world produced during the process of coal mining . The accumulation of CG is easy to cause ion leakage , which is harmful to the environment and human body. The recovery and utilization of CG are imminent. In the process, a hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) adsorbent with excellent adsorption property for Cr(VI) and rhodamine B (RhB), was prepared from CG by a two-step method and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD , XPS, TPD and BET. The results revealed that the specific surface area of HPC is up to 2012.7 m 2  g −1 , and its adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) and RhB are reached 320.51 and 3086.42 mg g −1 . The adsorption mechanism of RhB was the synergetic effect of physics and chemistry. While XPS results suggested that hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) only have a chemisorption effect on Cr(VI). This study provided an idea for the preparation of HPCs from CG to remove inorganic and organic pollutants such as heavy metal Cr(VI) and RhB in water.

Scalable preparation of hierarchical porous carbon from lignin for highly efficient adsorptive removal of sulfamethazine antibiotic

Jiangdong Dai,Atian Xie,Ruilong Zhang,Wenna Ge,Zhongshuai Chang,Sujun Tian,Chunxiang Li,Yongsheng Yan

In order to efficiently remove sulfamethazine (SMZ) antibiotic from wastewater, in this work, we first described a facile and scalable synthesis of hierarchical porous carbon using industrial by-product sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) as raw source and potassium hydroxide as inorganic template and chemical activator, by a self-templating and in-situ activation method. The Lignin-derived hierarchical porous carbon obtained at an optimal mass ratio of SLS and alkali of 1:3 (LHPC-3) exhibited a largest specific surface area of 2235   m 2   g −1 and pore volume of 1.512   cm 3   g −1 . LHPC-3 possessed a very high saturated monolayer adsorption capacity of 854.7   mg   g −1 at 288   K. The pseudo-second-order rate model described the adsorption kinetics data. It was found that this carbon could be also effective in the high salt environment. Physical adsorption played in an important role in the process of capture SMZ molecules from water. This hierarchical porous carbon had good stability and regeneration property, providing the possibility for the practice application. We gave a novel, simple and effective technique to obtain high-performance hierarchical porous carbon for various use, especially for wastewater treatment.

Simple fabrication of a phosphorus-doped hierarchical porous carbon via soft-template method for efficient CO2capture

Lingzhen Gong,Yongping Hang,Jinhao Li,Gang Dai,Agula Bao

Hierarchical porous carbons are widely used as adsorbents, catalyst supports, electrode materials, and other applications because of their high specific surface area (SSA), varied pore structure, adjustable porosity, and excellent physicochemical stability. Introducing heteroatoms such as N, P, or S, with electronegativities different from that of carbon, into the carbon skeleton can change the chemical properties of the surface and the density of the electron cloud around the carbon matrix, thus altering interactions of CO 2 molecules with the surface and improving CO 2 adsorption capacity. Therefore, doping heteroatoms in carbon materials has attracted a great amount of attention. In this paper, the template method was used with F108 (polyethylene glycol–polypropylene glycolpolyethylene glycol) as the template, resorcinol and formaldehyde solutions as the carbon sources, phosphoric acid as the phosphorus source, and KOH as the activator to prepare phosphorus-doped hierarchical porous carbons. Through a series of characterization and CO 2 adsorption experiments, the influence of the amount of KOH and template agent on the pore structure of carbon materials was studied. We conclude that these phosphorus-doped hierarchical porous carbon materials are promising CO 2 adsorbents.

Facile one-step synthesis of cork-derived hierarchical porous carbons with P, N, and O heteroatoms for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes

Luo Lingcong,Zhang Qianqian,Lan Yuling,Deng Jianping,Lin Yang,Du Guanben,Zhao Weigang

High-performance electrodes of activated carbons (PNOACs) with P, N, and O heteroatoms were prepared through a simple one-step phosphoric acid activation method without the need for any dopants or post-treatment. In the preparation procedure, cork biomass material from Quercus variabilis was used as the precursor, and phosphoric acid was used as both the phosphoric resource and the activation agent. The pore structure, morphology, and physicochemical properties of the as-prepared carbons were investigated. In addition, the electrochemical performances of the PNOACs were evaluated using three-electrode and two-electrode systems (symmetric supercapacitor, AS). The results indicated that cork is promising as a low-cost and environmental-friendly precursor for producing high-performance supercapacitors electrode. Furthermore, galvanostatic charge–discharge analysis revealed a specific capacitance of 206 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , which can be attributed to the excellent hierarchical pore structure (micro-, meso-, and macropores) and suitable pore size distribution of the PNOACs. The specific surface area and total pore volume as high as 515.80 m 2  g −1 and 0.29 cm 3  g −1 were obtained, respectively. The presence of heteroatoms, namely N (0.81–1.07%), P (0.52–2.06%), and O (15.87–19.18%) content, on the carbon surface resulted in a considerable enhancement in the capacitive performance. Furthermore, a PNOAC sample, prepared at 600 °C with a mass ratio of 1:1, exhibited high long-term cycling stability (84.5%) and an energy density of 15.03 W h kg −1 . Therefore, cork is highly promising as an electrode material for supercapacitors to attain exceptional electrochemical performance, as well as provide a new possibility for the utilization and valorization of high-value cork waste.

Waste-honeycomb-derived in situ N-doped Hierarchical porous carbon as sulfur host in lithium–sulfur battery

Hong Li,Zirui Zhao,Yuyun Li,Mingwu Xiang,Junming Guo,Hongli Bai,Xiaofang Liu,Xinzhou Yang,Changwei Su

Promising applications of lithium–sulfur batteries with high theoretical capacity are still severely limited due to the poor conductivity of sulfur, the polysulfide shuttle effect and volume expansion. Herein, low-cost and carbon/nitrogen-rich waste honeycombs are used to prepare in situ N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (INHPC) and firstly applied as a sulfur host by facile high-temperature carbonization combined with KHCO3 activation. The influence of mass ratios of the activator to honeycomb on the morphology and pore structure of the as-prepared carbon materials was investigated in detail. Among them, the optimized INHPC with a mass ratio of 4 : 1 presents block-like morphology with interconnected pore structure, while showing a high specific surface area of 1683.6 m2 g−1 and a large pore volume of 0.974 cm3 g−1. Moreover, the in situ N-doped carbon materials not only have good electronic conductivity but also strong chemical adsorption with polysulfide intermediates, hence effectively alleviating the shuttle effect. When used as the sulfur host, the as-obtained INHPC-4/S composite cathode with a sulfur content of 60 wt% delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 913.4 mA h g−1 and retains a reversible capacity of 538.3 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. Even at a current rate of 1 C, the first discharge capacity of 623.2 mA h g−1 can be obtained, simultaneously achieving the durable cycle life up to 500 cycles. These good electrochemical performances are ascribed to physicochemical synergistic adsorption of in situ N-doping and hierarchical porous structure as well as high ionic/electronic conductivity.

Nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons prepared via freeze-drying assisted carbonization for high-performance supercapacitors

Jinlong Hu,Wenxin He,Shudi Qiu,Weijian Xu,Yaohua Mai,Fei Guo

Functionalized carbon electrodes with hierarchical porous structure play an essential role in the fabrication of high-performance supercapacitors . Here, we report a novel freeze-drying assisted carbonization approach for the preparation of nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbons (NHPCs). Using urea as both the pore-forming agent and the nitrogen source, and sodium alginate (SA) as the carbon precursor, we are able to modulate the porosity and N-doping concentration of the NHPCs by simply altering the carbonization temperature and the dosage of urea. The prepared NHPCs exhibit specific surface area as high as 1179 m 2  g −1 with 70% micropore and high N- and O-doping concentration of 6.7 wt% and 13.8 wt%, respectively. Carbon electrodes based on these NHPCs show a high gravimetric capacitance (305 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 ) and an excellent rate ability (retaining 73.8% at 20 A g −1 ) in three-electrode systems. The NHPCs symmetric supercapacitor delivers excellent energy density of up to 23.8 W h kg −1 as well as long-term electrochemical stability (95.8% capacitance retention over 10, 000 cycles). The abundance of the raw materials combined with the simple fabrication procedure makes the SA-derived NHPCs as promising electrode materials for the next generation advanced supercapacitors .

Fabrication of nitrogen doped and hierarchically porous carbon flowers for CO2 adsorption

Jinsong Shi,Hongmin Cui,Jianguo Xu,Nanfu Yan,Chao Zhang,Shengyong You

Porous carbon with specifically designed structure as CO 2 adsorbent is a very attractive and interesting research topic. In this study, we presented the synthesis and CO 2 adsorption of flower shaped porous carbons. Flower-like hydrochar derived from the hydrothermal reaction of glucose, cobalt sulfate, and hexamethylenetetramine was used as the precursor, which was converted to carbon flower during CO 2 activation. The flowers had hierarchically macro-meso-microporous structure. Interspaces and voids were formed by assembly of the petals, and the petals were distributed with pores of different scales. The formation mechanism of, and influences of various synthesis parameters on the flower shape were studied and analyzed. The carbon flowers exhibited surface area of 422−691 m 2 /g, and very high nitrogen content of 9.31–11.91 wt%. CO 2 adsorption performances of the carbon flowers were also studied. Influences of the textural properties and doped nitrogen on the adsorption performances were investigated. The experiment results demonstrated that nitrogen doping showed positive effects on CO 2 uptake at 1 bar, and had strong influence on the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity.

Hollow-structured conjugated porous polymer derived Iron/Nitrogen-codoped hierarchical porous carbons as highly efficient electrocatalysts

Wenbei Zhang,Tianlu Cui,Lingyun Yang,Chao Zhang,Ming Cai,Sai Sun,Yefeng Yao,Xiaodong Zhuang,Fan Zhang

Iron and nitrogen (Fe/N) co-doped porous carbons have already shown great potential as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media. However, it still remains a great challenge to finely integrate a hierarchical porous structure and Fe/N co-doping effect into one material at the same time. In this work, a rational design toward Fe/N-codoped hierarchical porous carbon spheres was developed by the formation of an iron-porphyrin-containing conjugated microporous polymer sphere with hollow structure (HCMP) through a silica sphere template directed condensation of pyrrole and 1,4-phthalaldehyde, then etched with NaOH, and treated with FeCl 2 . The resulting HCMP-Fe polymer was readily converted to a series of Fe/N co-doped hierarchical porous carbons (HPC-Fe/N-X, X   =   700–900) upon pyrolysis at different temperatures and etching treatment. These porous carbons exhibit the high specific surface areas up to 518   m 2   g −1 and the contents of N and Fe up to 3.28   at.% and 0.85   wt.%, respectively. Benefiting from the high surface area, Fe/N co-doping character, HPC-Fe/N-700 exhibited excellent electrochemical catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction under alkaline condition (0.1   M KOH) with a low half-wave potential (0.84   V), a dominant four-electron transfer mechanism (n   =   3.89 at 0.65   V), as well as a high diffusion limiting current density ( J L   =   5.19   mA   cm −2 ), comparable to those porous carbon-based ORR catalysts with excellent electrochemical performance.

Combination of chemical activation and nitrogen doping toward hierarchical porous carbon from houttuynia cordata for supercapacitors

Weiwei Zhu,Dekui Shen,Haijiao Xie

Nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon (N-HPC) was prepared from houttuynia cordata under the combined action of chemical activation and nitrogen-doping. The etching behavior of activator was enhanced by nitrogen doping while the proportion of pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogen was promoted by the etching behavior. Theoretical calculations reveal that the activator is more likely to adsorb on the nitrogen-doped carbon surface and tend to etch carbon atoms besides the pyridinic, graphitic nitrogen and pyridine-N-oxide. The prepared N-HPC displays a large specific surface area of 2491.5 m 2  g −1 , and the nitrogen atoms in N-HPC exist mainly in the form of pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogen. The N-HPC electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 220.5 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 and good rate characteristic in 6 M KOH electrolyte. The assembled symmetric supercapacitors exhibit a high energy density of 9.82 W h kg −1 at a power density of 162.33 W kg −1 . This work reveals the interaction between nitrogen-doping process and etching behavior of the activator, and proposes a novel route for the synthesis of biomass-based carbon material for supercapacitors.

Synthesis of Bi2O3/hierarchical porous carbon composites for supercapacitor application

Weiwei Zhu,Dekui Shen

Bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) is considered a promising electrode material for supercapacitors boasting a high theoretical capacity. Its weak conductivity, limited rate performance, and poor cycling stability have significantly hindered practical applications. In this work, a simple precipitation and calcination method was used to prepare Bi 2 O 3 /hierarchical porous carbon composite materials (Bi 2 O 3 /N-HPC). The biomass-derived hierarchical porous carbon precursor was prepared through a process involving nitrogen doping and chemical activation. Comprehensive physical and chemical structure characterization results showed that a large number of spherical Bi 2 O 3 particles were dispersed on the surface of the carbon material, providing numerous active sites for electrochemical reactions. The nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon scaffold provided rapid pathways for charge transfer and restricted the aggregation of Bi 2 O 3 particles. As an electrode material in a 6 M KOH electrolyte, Bi 2 O 3 /N-HPC exhibited a specific capacitance of 684.9 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , and even at an increased current density of 20 A g −1 , the specific capacitance remained at 500.0 F g −1 . After 10,000 cycles of charge and discharge, the capacitance retention rate of the Bi 2 O 3 /N-HPC electrode reached 85.2 %. This research offers a promising pathway for the development of high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.
