Cutting fluid is indispensable in the machining industry as a fluid for lubrication and cooling in the metalworking process due to their ability to significantly improve various properties of cutting fluid. Castor oil, as a common base oil and additive in cutting fluid, can be grafted onto the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to further enhance the lubricating properties of cutting fluid. It has been shown that cellulose nanocrystals and castor oil modified cellulose nanocrystals (CO-CNC) as additives in cutting fluid have good dispersion stability and can effectively improve the lubricating properties. When the amount of CNC or CO-CNC was added in the working fluid at about 0.5 wt%, the friction coefficient was significantly reduced. According to the results from this study, cellulose nanocrystal is a promising candidate as the nontoxic and renewable additive for the improvement of diverse performances for the water-based cutting fluid.

Cutting fluid could improve the machining efficiency and reduce the energy consumption during broaching process. However, the commercial cutting fluids (CCF) contain harmful constituents causing various environmental threats. Vegetable oil based nanofluids , which contain nanoparticles in the environmentally friendly vegetable oils, could be regarded as a potential alternative for cutting fluids. In this paper, the best concentrations of three sesame oil-based nanofluids containing Fe 3 O 4 , Al 2 O 3 , Carbon nanoparticles respectively were obtained. Then, the experiments on broaching AISI 1045 steel under MQL lubrication were conducted. The results showed that nanofluid (total weight:30 g) containing 160 mg Carbon produced the best lubricating effect. Its reduction of the average broaching load peak and load valley were 725 N and 614 N, which were 115.7%, 118.5% higher than those of CCF. And its root mean square error (RMSE) of broaching vibration signal was 36.15% lower than CCF. Also, the best surface quality was obtained. Cost analysis for the application of nanofluids is done in the present work. The sesame oil-based Carbon nanofluid (160 mg) has both environmental and efficient benefits for industrial application.

Cutting fluid (CF) ensures machining accuracy and improves tool life in machining, which is of great significance for its impurity content detection and life cycle evaluation. In this paper, citric acid and arginine were used as carbon and nitrogen sources, photoluminescent (PL) nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CDs) with a particle size ranging from 8 to 14 nm and well dispersion in water-based CF were synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal reaction method. The N-CDs have the best signal under 360 nm ultraviolet light excitation, which well avoids the autofluorescence of the CF. The N-CDs dispersion have good selectivity and linearity in the Fe 3+ concentration range of 2 to 80 μM, and the detection limit is 1.2 μM. The N-CDs were used to detect the concentration of Fe 3+ in CF with different working hours, and the results were consistent with the results of coupled plasma emission spectroscopy. This study provides an intelligent sensing platform for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ in the CF environment, and provides a promising strategy for the evaluation of the CF lifetime.

To cope with the problems of environmental pollution and resource waste of traditional mineral oil-based cutting fluids, this study optimized the performance of vegetable oil-based cutting fluids under hard water environment (hardness 450 mg L −1 , pH = 9) by response surface methodology (RSM), using soybean oil as the base oil and combining with Span 20 and Tween 80 composite surfactants. The experimental design used hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value, surfactant concentration and soybean oil content as variables, as well as emulsion stability (particle size) and friction performance (wear scar diameter, WSD) as response values to construct a prediction model and verify its reliability. The results showed that the optimized cutting fluid formulation (HLB = 11.79, surfactant concentration 0.50 wt%, soybean oil content 10.06 wt%) exhibited excellent emulsion stability (particle size 573.8 nm, microscopically observed average particle size 2.48 μm) and friction performance (WSD = 0.506 mm) in the validation experiments. The emulsion has a lower coefficient of friction (25.7 % lower torque) and higher thermal conductivity than commercial cutting fluids. Microscopic characterization (DSC, rheological analysis) showed that its low-temperature fluidity and wettability were significantly better than that of pure water, and the contact angle was smaller. This research provided the theoretical and technological basis for the development of environmentally friendly and efficient hard water applicable cutting fluids to support the sustainable development goal of green manufacturing.

To extend tool life and improve machining quality, this study proposes the use of amino acids as lubricant additives to lubricate the cemented carbide/steel cutting interface. The results showed that Poly-L-lysine (PLL) as an additive in ethylene glycol induced macroscopic liquid superlubricity, achieving a remarkably low coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.006, which further decreased to 0.0007 after 4 h, even under high contact pressures of 796 MPa. The achievement of superlubricity resulted from tribofilm generation, with the combined action of this film and the liquid phase effectively reducing frictional pair contact. The PLL additive induced friction reduction and wear resistance may facilitate breakthroughs in advanced cutting fluid formulations for industrial machining and manufacturing processes.
