Organophosphonate draw solution for produced water treatment with effectively mitigated membrane fouling via forward osmosis

Chun Ding,Xuan Zhang,Shu Xiong,Liang Shen,Ming Yi,Boyang Liu,Yan Wang

In this study, an organophosphonate scale inhibitor, ethylenediamine tetra(methylenephosphonic acid) sodium salt (EDTMPA-Na) draw solution, was adopted for alleviating the membrane fouling in the forward osmosis (FO) application of produced water treatment. Compared with the typical NaCl draw solution, the employment of EDTMPA-Na draw solution can alleviate the membrane fouling effectively and therefore achieve a higher water recovery rate (60.6%) after a continuous 48-h test. And the mechanism of membrane fouling control with EDTMPA-Na draw solution has been systemically explored by varying the feed or draw solution compositions. The results turn out that the leakage of EDTMPA-Na draw solute to the feed solution can alleviate the formation of gypsum scales on the membrane surface effectively, ascribed to its excellent scale inhibition ability and the unique diffusion route of the draw solute (resulting in a relative higher concentration of EDTMPA-Na near the membrane surface) in FO process. And the alleviation of membrane scaling can further mitigate the accumulation of organic foulant on the FO membrane . This study may provide an efficient strategy for alleviating the membrane fouling in the FO application of produced water treatment.

Approaching ratio as a guideline for substrate design of forward osmosis membranes

Nan Sun,Shucheng Mo,Pengjia Dou,Chenjun Dong,Tao He

Forward osmosis (FO) has been proposed as an ecologically friendly and low carbon footprint technology for concentrating enriched lithium brine from the salt lake using freely available MgCl 2 onsite as the draw. In this process, Li + concentration is raised from a few hundred mg/L to 20-30 g/L (Li + ) before precipitation of Li 2 CO 3 . To allow FO technology a wide margin in competing with other concentration technologies, it is highly desirable to develop a simple, low cost method to fabricate FO membrane . Besides, due to both feed and draw solutions being of high salinity, FO membranes should also have a defect-free polyamide (PA) separation layer and a low structural parameter ( S ) substrate. This paper presents a simple guideline called approaching ratio (α) to adjust the substrate pore morphology based on a ternary polysulfone (PSf)/N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc)/diethylene glycol (DEG) solution. The α ranging between 0 and 100 % is a metric measuring how close the solution is to the cloud point. The increase of α endows instant phase separation, resulting in the substrate with increased surface porosity and sponge-like structure. Pore connectivity is improved following an increase of α below a threshold value of 50 %. Water permeability dramatically increases from α = 0 % to α = 50 % and declines at above 50 % for forming the closed cellular pores at α = 80 %. The FO water flux shows a similar trend which was found to be closely related to the substrate pore interconnectivity. The FO membrane was applied in the lithium concentration process using saturated MgCl 2 as the draw, the experimental results fit well with the FO model. The results demonstrate a simple, low-cost generic method to prepare FO membranes for applications with very high salinity feed and draw.

Self-sustaining alkaline seawater electrolysis via forward osmosis membranes

Ke Shi,Hongyi Wan,Keyu Wang,Fumohan Fang,Shiyi Li,Yixing Wang,Linfeng Lei,Linzhou Zhuang,Zhi Xu

Seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production faces inherent challenges, including side reactions, corrosion, and scaling, stemming from the intricate composition of seawater. In response, researchers have turned to continuous water splitting using forward osmosis (FO)-driven seawater desalination. However, the necessity of a neutral electrolyte hampers this strategy due to the limited current density and scarcity of precious metals. Herein, this study applies alkali-durable FO membranes to enable self-sustaining seawater splitting, which can selective withdraw water molecules, from seawater, via concentration gradient. The membranes demonstrated outstanding perm-selectivity of water/ions (∼5830 mol mol −1 ) during month-long alkaline resistance tests, preventing electrolyte leaching (>97% OH − retention) while maintaining ∼95% water balance ( V FO = V electrolysis ) via preserved concentration gradient for consistent forward-osmosis influx of water molecules. With the consistent electrolyte environment protected by the polyamide FO membranes, the NiFe-Ar-P catalyst exhibits promising performance: a sustain current density of 360 mA cm −2 maintained at the cell voltage of 2.10 V and 2.15 V for 360 h in the offshore seawater, preventing Cl/Br corrosion (98% rejection) and Mg/Ca passivation (99.6% rejection). This research marks a significant advancement towards efficient and durable seawater-based hydrogen production.

Membranes constructed by metal–ligand complexation for efficient phosphorus removal and fouling resistance in forward osmosis

Liu Ming-Ju,Li Ping,Meng Qing-Wei,Ge Qingchun

Low permeation flux and rapid flux decline are challenging membrane technology in wastewater treatment. Here we used a metal–ligand complexation protocol to construct novel forward osmosis (FO) membrane for efficient and sustainable phosphorus removal. Disodium and tetrasodium salts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA-2Na, EDTA-4Na) were separately grafted onto the conventional polyamide (PA) membranes via chemical complexation using Fe 3+ as a bridge. These EDTA salts substantially improved the membrane properties. Consequently, the water fluxes produced by the EDTA-2Na and EDTA-4Na modified membranes increased by 109% (11.1 LMH) and 140% (12.7 LMH), respectively, relative to that of the pristine membrane (5.3 LMH) with 0.5 M NaCl as the draw solution. Meanwhile, the EDTA-4Na modified membrane surpassed the naked PA membrane in performance with higher water recovery efficiencies and solute rejections after long-term experiments against a mixture of bovine serum albumin and HPO 4 2− . Moreover, the water flux recovery ratio of the naked PA membrane was only 51%, while that of the EDTA-4Na modified membrane reached over 93% after three cycles of fouling experiments. This study provides a new paradigm to develop FO membrane via a metal–ligand complexation protocol for efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment. Graphical abstract Novel FO membranes synthesized through a complexation protocol are used for phosphorus removal and fouling resistance in forward osmosis.

Simultaneous degradation and rejection of PPCPs from wastewater in a 3DEO-FO-RO process

Pengxiao Liu,Xinzhang Yu,Yang Liu,Rong Han,Houfen Li

This study established a novel three-dimensional electrochemical oxidation coupled with forward osmosis and reverse osmosis (3DEO-FO-RO) system with the purpose to achieve simultaneous degradation and rejection of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater. 18 frequently detected PPCPs were selected as the target pollutants to prepare the synthetic wastewater with a concentration of 200 μg/L for each pollutant. Ti/IrO 2 –Ta 2 O 5 –SnO 2 mesh anode, titanium mesh cathode and Sn–Sb–Bi/γ-Al 2 O 3 particles electrodes were integrated in the 3DEO-FO reactor. Experimental results demonstrated that degradation efficiency exceeding 98.5 % and rejection exceeding 99.4 % for each PPCP were achieved simultaneously in the 3DEO-FO-RO processes at a current density of 1 mA/cm 2 after 8 h treatment. Despite variations in applied current density, the 3DEO-FO-RO processes exhibited superior PPCPs removal efficiencies, particularly for refractory compounds, compared to the 2DEO-FO-RO processes. Increased hydroxyl radical (·OH) generation in the 3D reactor was considered to be responsible for the excellent performance. Furthermore, results derived from ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectra and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra provided additional validation for the effective removal of PPCPs in the 3DEO-FO-RO processes, along with evidence indicating the decomposition of PPCPs into smaller constituents. Ultimately, the 3DEO-FO-RO process demonstrated its capacity in removing PPCPs from actual secondary effluent from a wastewater treatment plant. This integrated system coupling 3D EO with FO-RO membranes can provide an efficient approach for simultaneous degradation and rejection of trace contaminants for wastewater reuse.

Sustainable oily water reclamation through forward osmosis assisted by fouling-resistant membranes functionalized with arginine derivatives

Yichen Chen,Yan Yu,Liming Yang,Qingchun Ge

Purifying water contaminated with emulsified oil via forward osmosis (FO) is still plagued by low water recovery efficiency and poor fouling resistance of membrane. Herein we design a series of arginine-copper complexes to construct antifouling FO membranes from a polyamide membrane (PA-M) for oily water reclamation. A modification layer abundant in Cu 2+ and guanidino is formed on the PA selective surface. It endows the membranes with desired structural and physicochemical properties that benefit the FO separation. The membrane functionalized with copper arginine sulfate (CAS-M) outperforms PA-M with water fluxes enhanced by 151 % against DI water. CAS-M also achieves higher oil-water separation efficiency with the water recovery rate increased by 94 % compared to that of PA-M when 3000 ppm emulsified oil as the feed. Remarkably, CAS-M exhibits excellent antifouling and antibacterial performance with a 98 % antibacterial rate and easier cleaning property after being fouled. Favorable physicochemical and structural characteristics as well as advantageous water transfer properties are the major benefits of CAS-M. This makes CAS-M outperform PA-M and other recently reported FO membranes with exceptional water permeability and antifouling ability. This study demonstrates an eco-friendly protocol to develop antifouling and antibacterial FO membrane for sustainable oily water purification.

Positively charged membranes constructed via complexation for chromium removal through micellar-enhanced forward osmosis

Wenxiu Hu,Yichen Chen,Xinfei Dong,Qing-Wei Meng,Qingchun Ge

It is challenging to purify wastewater containing heavy metals at low concentrations. Forward osmosis (FO) is promising to remove most of contaminants from wastewater. However, the lack of suitable membranes disables FO to achieve its full potential. Here we designed positively charged PA-Fe-H 2 O and PA-Fe-Bet membranes for efficient chromium (CrO 4 2- ) removal through micellar-enhanced FO (MEFO) separation. These membranes were developed by functionalizing the ready-made polyamine (PA) membrane via eco-friendly complexation between Fe 3+ and carboxyl groups of the PA layer and/or betaine (Bet). A Fe 3+ -bridged hydration or quaternary ammonium layer was formed which imbued the membrane with desirable properties for FO separation. The water permeability of the PA-Fe-H 2 O and PA-Fe-Bet membranes was increased by 92% and 142%, respectively, compared to that of the PA membrane when 0.5 M MgCl 2 as the draw solution. The PA-Fe-Bet membrane greatly improved CrO 4 2- removal efficiency by increasing the water flux from 6.2 to 12.0 LMH along with complete CrO 4 2- retention in the cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) facilitated MEFO process. Moreover, this membrane exhibited enhanced antifouling properties when exposed to CPC solutions. The environmentally benign synthesis approach, high CrO 4 2- removal efficiency and fouling resistance of the PA-Fe-Bet membrane demonstrate its potential for contaminants removal.

New insights into the interaction between surface-charged membranes and positively-charged draw solutes in the forward osmosis process

Xiang-Yu Chi,Ming-Xiao Zhang,Zhen-Liang Xu,Bao-Gen Xia

In this study, a flat-sheet polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membrane with different surface charges has been designed as a forward osmosis (FO) membrane while a positively-charged organic chitooligosaccharide (COS) applied as a draw solution (DS). The flat-sheet TFC FO membrane consists of three layers (from top to bottom): the polyamide selective layer, electrospun cellulose triacetate (CTA) nanofibers and mechanically robust polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers coated with dopamine (DPA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI). The DPA/PEI modification on the PAN nanofibers has proven to be efficient and resulted in a more positively-charged surface with improved hydrophilicity. Meanwhile, the polyamide layer formed by the interfacial polymerization (IP) method was negatively charged on top of the FO membrane. The interaction between surface-charged membranes and positively-charged draw solutes in the FO process has been investigated comprehensively. The result showed that hydrophilicity and electrostatic repulsion could alleviate the fouling generated by organic DS, while hydrophobicity and electrostatic attraction could magnify the fouling. Finally, the positively-charged DS was recycled by the positively-charged PEI NF membranes with a reasonably high special water flux and salt rejections. Therefore, this study shows that the combination of the surface-charged membranes and positively-charged COS DS has the desirable water flux, little reverse salt flux (RSF) and fouling effects. In conclusion, the developed membrane is providing a new way to design practical FO processes.

Application of polysaccharide derivatives as novel draw solutes in forward osmosis for desalination and protein concentration

Chun Ding,Xuan Zhang,Liang Shen,Jiaqi Huang,Ang Lu,Fangrui Zhong,Yan Wang

In this study, a series of anionic polyelectrolytes, sodium carboxymethyl dextrans with different molecular weights (CM-dextran-1000/5000/20,000), are facilely prepared via a one-step reaction and applied as novel draw solutes in forward osmosis (FO) process. Various characterizations (FTIR, NMR, conductivity titration and cytotoxicity test) are performed to investigate the chemical structure, degree of substitution (DS) and toxicity of synthesized CM-dextrans. Effects of the solution concentration and solute molecular weight on physicochemical properties (relative viscosity, conductivity and osmotic pressure) of CM-dextran draw solutions as well as their corresponding FO performances are investigated systematically. In comparison with FO performance of 1 M NaCl draw solution (water flux of 22.1 LMH; reverse solute flux of 9.8 gMH), 40 wt% CM-dextran-1000 draw solution shows a higher water flux (24.9 LMH) and a much lower reverse solute flux (0.97 gMH) in PRO mode. Furthermore, CM-dextran solution with the low reverse solute diffusion, nontoxicity, and the high osmotic pressure, can be potentially used as draw solution for desalination and protein enrichment via FO. The theoretical calculation also confirms that FO process shows lower special energy consumption than UF process in the application of protein concentration.

Investigation of internal concentration polarization reduction in forward osmosis membrane using nano-CaCO3 particles as sacrificial component

Wu kuang,Zhongnan Liu,Haijun Yu,Guodong Kang,Xingming Jie,Yan Jin,Yiming Cao

Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanoparticles were used as sacrificial additives to fabricate PSf substrate membranes and based on which thin film composite (TFC) membranes were prepared using m-Phenylenediamine (MPD) and 1, 3, 5-trimesoylchloride (TMC) as the monomers . Then CaCO 3 nanoparticles dispersed in PSf matrix were effectively etched with hydrochloric acid to increase the substrate porosity. The effect of CaCO 3 loading (ranging from 0 to 10.0   wt%) was systematically investigated. The results showed that the substrate membranes fabricated with CaCO 3 incorporation exhibited higher porosity and smaller structural parameter, which is advantageous for improving water permeability and reducing mass transfer resistance. As for forward osmosis (FO) performance, the TFC membranes fabricated using modified substrates exhibited much higher water flux than the control TFC membrane prepared by substrate without CaCO 3 incorporation in both AL-FS and AL-DS mode when using DI water as the feed and 2   M NaCl as draw solution. The optimized TFC21 membrane also had better performance than other commercial TFC membranes in simulated seawater desalination . Moreover, the reduced membrane structural parameter indicated that the internal concentration polarization (ICP) could be mitigated via the etching method. This study provides a low cost and feasible way to reduce the ICP in FO membranes .

Template-etched sodium alginate hydrogel as the sublayer to improve the FO performance with double barriers for high metal ion rejection

Wei Huang,Lihua Zhao,Jiayan Zhang,Hao Wen,Ziyi Zhu,Ping Wang,Yizhen Liu,Changkun Liu

In the current research, preparation of a forward osmosis membrane that can effectively reject heavy metals in wastewater treatment would prove to be highly beneficial. Here, an innovative forward osmosis (FO) membrane with a “sandwich” structure (formed via the template method) was achieved for the first time through the fabrication of a porous hydrogel sublayer. A porous hydrogel matrix with excellent water retention capacity was formed through the crosslinking reaction of sodium alginate and calcium chloride in the presence of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles, followed by etching to remove the ZnO nanoparticles in the sublayer to produce the porous structure. The water flux of the modified membrane was quintuple compared with the that of the original membrane, with no reduction on the salt rejection performance. The surface polyamide layer and sublayer acted as double barriers and achieved a rejection rate of over 98% for heavy metal ions (Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , Ni 2+ ), when the glucose solution was used as the draw solution. The inclusion of the porous sublayer can provide deeper insights into the fabrication of high-performance FO membranes, and expand their applications.

Functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids promote seawater desalination through forward osmosis

Qiaozhen Chen,Qingchun Ge,Wenxuan Xu,Wenbin Pan

Carboxylate-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids (CFIMILs) were synthesized via a one-pot quaternization reaction and serve as draw solutes for the first time for forward osmosis (FO) desalination. It provides a solution to simultaneously overcome the problems plaguing the use of pressure-driven membrane technologies to extract water from saline water – low water recovery efficiency and high reverse solute diffusion. The CFIMILs contain a substituted 5-membered imidazole ring and fully ionize into ionic species in water. These characteristics endow CFIMILs with capability of high water recovery efficiency and minimal reverse diffusion in FO. Sodium salt of 1-acetate-2,3-dimethyl imidazole ionic liquid (IL-1) at 0.8 M produces water fluxes of 63.6 LMH (PRO mode) and 29.5 LMH (FO mode) against the DI water feed, greatly outperforming conventional NaCl draw solute and other synthetic draw solutes. Efficient water recovery is achieved using IL-1 for seawater desalination with a water flux 5 times higher than that of NaCl. Particularly, CFIMILs draw solutes have negligible reverse diffusion in FO and are recycled completely via an MD process with good reproducibility when reused to FO, demonstrating great potentials of CFIMILs as a new class of draw solutes for FO water treatment.
