Existing polymer materials often lack the ability to dynamically adjust lubrication in response to external stimuli. This gap in adaptable lubrication technology limits their application in advanced systems such as intelligent motion devices and soft robotics. To address this challenge, a dual-responsive lubricating hydrogel is introduced designed with a thermal and shear-responsive supramolecular network integrated into a stable polymer framework. The hydrogel exhibits a partial gel-sol transition under thermal or shear stress, mimicking the mucus secretion behavior of hagfish. As a result, the hydrogel′s surface secretes a liquid supramolecular layer that significantly alters its coefficient of friction (COF), achieving up to a 20-fold reduction in friction due to the reversible supramolecular transition. This hydrogel demonstrates significant potential as an intelligent lubrication material capable of dynamically responding to varying stimuli, paving the way for more adaptive and efficient lubrication technologies.

Here we report novel shear-sensitive polymeric large compound micelles (LCMs) formed by self-assembly of glutathione end-capped poly(4-vinylpyridine) (GP4VP) in water containing 4 vol% methanol. The amphiphile prefers to form the kinetically stabilized LCMs due to the small length ratio of the hydrophilic part to the hydrophobic part; the encapsulation of the hydrophilic part within LCMs causes only a small enthalpy loss from a thermodynamic view. Sheared by vortex flows generated by vigorous stir, the LCMs evolve to thick wall vesicles, thin wall vesicles, broken vesicles and "pearl-necklace" structures consecutively. The high flexibility of the LCMs and the internal tension caused by the encapsulation of the hydrophilic part are responsible for the high shear sensitivity of the LCMs.

The dynamic response experiment has been a difficult point of the metal/polymer interfacial bonding performance testing, in which the metal surface state and the loading condition are key independent variables that should be comprehensively investigated. This work investigates the effect of loading velocity and Al surface porosity on Al/PMMA interfacial dynamic shear bonding performance. Firstly, simulation is applied to predict dynamic response variation trends. Simulation results show that the maximum force (MF) has minor changes with initial bullet velocity (IBV), while the de-bonding displacement (DD) and interface failure work (IFW) decrease obviously with IBV. All three indicators increase smoothly with the area ratio of PMMA interlocks. In experiment, the result plots of the indicators are all discrete, but as a whole, the MF plots could not be distinguished by the variation of IBV, while the plots of DD and NW decrease with IBV, which are consistent with simulation. The dynamic response indicators obtained by simulation and experiment show similar variation trends with their respective independent variables at certain ranges (surface porosity: − 15–20%/dm 2 , area ratio: 0–0.33) and could be contrasted to evaluate the indicator value differences at full range. By further analysis within MF and DD indicators, the stability of the dynamic interfacial stiffness is discovered at their respective loading velocities, which is similar static loading in past work. The strengthening and weakening mechanisms of Al/PMMA interface are also inferred. This experiment–simulation combined work exhibits a systematic method to predict the dynamic response with the variation of the independent investigating variables at certain ranges, to evaluate the degree of deviation of the experimental plots from simulative ones and to help determine the porosity range where higher dynamic response would be obtained, which would be also applied to other metal/polymer layered system. Lipid-based boundary layers formed on liposome-containing hydrogels can facilitate lubrication. However, these boundary layers can be damaged by shear, resulting in decreased lubrication. Here, a shear-responsive boundary-lubricated drug-loaded hydrogel is created by incorporating celecoxib (CLX)-loaded liposomes within dynamic covalent bond-based hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels ( [email protected] @HA-gel). The dynamic cross-linked network enables the hydrogel to get restructured in response to shear, and the HA matrix allows the accumulation of internal liposome microreservoirs on the sliding surfaces, which results in the formation of boundary layers to provide stable lubrication. Moreover, hydration shells formed surrounding the hydrogel can retard the degradation process, thus helping in sustaining lubrication. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments found that [email protected] @HA-gels can maintain anabolic-catabolic balance, alleviate cartilage wear, and attenuate osteoarthritis progression by delivering CLX and shear-responsive boundary lubrication. Overall, [email protected] @HA-gels can serve as shear-responsive boundary lubricants and drug-delivery vehicles to alleviate friction-related diseases like osteoarthritis.

Autonomous lubrication mechanisms in nature inspire the development of self-secreting materials to address tribological challenges in extreme environments. Traditional hydrogels rely heavily on hydration lubrication, which is ineffective in dry conditions and severely compromised in subzero environments due to water loss and freezing. In this study, we present a novel organohydrogel (OHG) system that integrates supramolecular organogels within a hydrogel matrix, enabling temperature-responsive and shear-responsive self-secretion for lubrication in dry, wet, and subzero conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that OHGs exhibit effective lubrication even in completely dry conditions, overcoming reliance on hydration lubrication seen in traditional hydrogels. In dry conditions, the friction coefficient (COF) of OHGs decreases from 0.4 to 0.1 due to thermally or shear induced self-secretion of the lubricating phase. Additionally, OHGs maintain low-temperature lubrication at −10 °C, retaining flexibility and achieving a stable COF of 0.1. In aqueous environments, OHGs not only exhibit hydration lubrication like traditional hydrogels but also benefit from oil-phase secretion, further reducing the COF to 0.07. Furthermore, self-secretion-controlled hydration swelling behavior was observed, resulting in a swelling equilibrium time eight times greater than that of conventional hydrogels. This controlled swelling behavior enables prolonged migration and enhanced sealing performance, making OHGs particularly suited for deep profile control in oilfield applications. These findings highlight the potential of OHGs as a next-generation self-lubricating material that overcomes the limitations of hydration-based hydrogels, offering enhanced lubrication functionality with promising applications in oilfield development, robotics, and biomedical engineering.

The high-dynamic, high-loading environment in the joint cavity puts urgent demands on the cartilage regenerative materials with shear responsiveness and lubrication. Here, a new type of injectable hydrogel composed of oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA), adipic dihydrazide-grafted hyaluronic acid (HA-ADH), oxidized chondroitin sulfate (OChs), and decellularized extracellular matrix methacrylate (dECMMA) was fabricated. The aldehyde groups in OHA and OChs reacted with the amino groups in HA-ADH to form a dynamic hydrogel, which was then covalently crosslinked with dECMMA to create a dual-crosslinked hydrogel with sufficient mechanical strength. This hydrogel possesses injectability and self-healing capabilities, making it suitable for use in the dynamic and high-frequency loading environment of joint cartilage. dECMMA fibers in this hydrogel could be oriented and aligned under certain shear forces, together with the biopolymers, giving the hydrogel lubricity and low strain-liquid transition properties that do not interfere with the daily mobility of the joint. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the hydrogel has sufficient tissue adhesion and excellent biocompatibility, promotes chondrocyte migration, and induces stem cell differentiation. The animal experiments demonstrated that the hydrogel promoted cartilage repair, and the lubricating effect of the newborn cartilage was close to that of normal cartilage.
