Porous conductive polymer composites are very attractive for static pressure sensing due to high sensitivity and good elasticity contributed by the porous structure , while they are hard to detect dynamic pressure. Herein, we report a porous conductive poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite capable of detecting static and dynamic pressure over a pressure range of 0–1 MPa, which was fabricated by melt mixing PVDF, polyethylene oxide (PEO) and carbon nanofillers , followed by etching PEO with water. Such porous PVDF composites have a very low percolation threshold (0.035 wt%) of carbon nanostructures (i.e., branched carbon nanotubes) thanks to the selective distribution of conductive fillers in the pore wall after etching. At the same time, the pore size and porosity of the porous PVDF composites can be tuned by the molecular weight (M w ) and blending ratios of two polymers, leading to the kinetically-tailorable blend morphology for tunable mechanical and electrical properties. The as-fabricated porous PVDF composites with a good combination of mechanical properties and electrical conductivities , which can be used as pressure sensors toward wide-range (0–1 MPa) dynamic and static pressure sensing. Such pressure sensors demonstrate potential applications in detecting the degree of finger bending, distinguishing the walking and running, and monitoring a series of technical movements in playing soccer, i.e., static and dynamic exercises.

Soft actuators, particularly pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs), have been widely applied to construct soft robotics owing to their superiorities of inherent compliance, lightweight, and high force density. However, it is still challenging to endow the PAMs with sensing capabilities towards unknown and complex environments due to their compliant mechanism and system. Herein, inspired by the skeletal muscle and skin, a novel multi-sensorized pneumatic artificial muscle yarn (mPAMy) is fabricated for multimodal proprioceptive sensing by a combination of textile braiding technology and hierarchical manufacturing method. The results and finite-element analysis reveal that the soft mPAMy have the endowed sensing capabilities towards diverse forces, including self-contraction, strain and vertical pressure. The mPAMy can detect force changes ranged from 0 N to 14 N by the yarn relative resistance change from 0 to 14.0%. Contractile sensing exhibits an increased range of resistance change (0–20.1%) compared with force sensing (0–14.0%), resulting in a greater resolution of 0.34% pressure to present change in resistance. In addition, the strain of mPAMy ranged from 0 to 57% can be stably detected. The excellent and durability pressure sensing merits of mPAMy can be ascribed from the change in resistance due to the PPy layer fracture. Furthermore, in several proof-of-concept attempts, the prepared mPAMy successfully detected precise signals of human motion and provided effective feedback during actuation. This approach opens a reliable strategy for PAMs towards multimodal sensing strategies in the healthcare, transportation and wearable electronics.

Flexible pressure sensors are increasingly sought after for applications ranging from physiological signal monitoring to robotic sensing; however, the challenges associated with fabricating highly sensitive, comfortable, and cost-effective sensors remain formidable. This study presents a high-performance, all-fabric capacitive pressure sensor (AFCPS) that incorporates piezoelectric nanofibers. Through the meticulous optimization of conductive fiber electrodes and P(VDF-TrFE) nanofiber dielectric layers, the AFCPS exhibits exceptional attributes such as high sensitivity (4.05 kPa–1), an ultralow detection limit (0.6 Pa), an extensive detection range (∼100 kPa), rapid response time (<26 ms), and robust stability (>14,000 cycles). The sensor’s porous structure enhances its compressibility, while its piezoelectric properties expedite charge separation, thereby increasing the interface capacitance and augmenting overall performance. These features are elucidated further through multiphysical field-coupling simulations and experimental testing. Owing to its comprehensive superior performance, the AFCPS has demonstrated its efficacy in monitoring human activity and physiological signals, as well as in discerning soft robotic grasping movements. Additionally, we have successfully implemented multiple AFCPS units as pressure sensor arrays to ascertain spatial pressure distribution and enable intelligent robotic gripping. Our research underscores the promising potential of the AFCPS device in wearable electronics and robotic sensing, thereby contributing significantly to the advancement of high-performance fabric-based sensors.

Elastic pressure sensors play a crucial role in the digital economy, such as in health care systems and human–machine interfacing. However, the low sensitivity of these sensors restricts their further development and wider application prospects. This issue can be resolved by introducing microstructures in flexible pressure-sensitive materials as a common method to improve their sensitivity. However, complex processes limit such strategies. Herein, a cost-effective and simple process was developed for manufacturing surface microstructures of flexible pressure-sensitive films. The strategy involved the combination of MXene–single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with mass-produced Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microspheres to form advanced microstructures. Next, the conductive silica gel films with pitted microstructures were obtained through a 3D-printed mold as flexible electrodes, and assembled into flexible resistive pressure sensors. The sensor exhibited a sensitivity reaching 2.6 kPa−1with a short response time of 56 ms and a detection limit of 5.1 Pa. The sensor also displayed good cyclic stability and time stability, offering promising features for human health monitoring applications.

Increasing demand for flexible sensors in healthcare has spurred the development of nanomaterial-polymer composite sensors. However, existing pressure sensors suffer from low sensitivity due to poor interactions between the functional filler and the polymer matrix. For example, the direct chemical bonding of nanomaterials to the surface of chemically inert polymers such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is not easily achieved. Herein, we demonstrate that MXene can significantly promote the sensitivity of a thin and soft piezoresistive sensor based on a surface functionalized PDMS (FPDMS) sponge. Using plasma treatment, we constructed a MXene-FPDMS (MFP) sponge with high mechanical strength via the interlayer hydrogen bonding effect. The formed MFP sponge structure (∼450 μm in thickness) endows the pressure sensor with a high sensitivity of 14.2 kPa −1 and a low modulus of 9.7 kPa, critical for detecting ultra-low pressures. When operated with deep learning algorithms, the MFP sponge sensor successfully classifies the pronunciation of 26 letters and various polite expressions with an average accuracy of 94 ± 0.6 %. We envision that this work paves the way for the development of intelligent wearable platforms.

Elastico-mechanoluminescence technology has shown significant application prospects in stress sensing, artificial skin, remote interaction, and other research areas. Its progress mainly lies in realizing stress visualization and 2D or even 3D stress-sensing effects using a passive sensing mode. However, the widespread promotion of mechanoluminescence (ML) technology is hindered by issues such as high stress or strain thresholds and a single sensing mode based on luminous intensity. In this study, a highly efficient green-emitting ML with dual-mode stress-sensing characteristics driven by microscale strain is developed using LiTaO 3 :Tb 3+ . In addition to single-mode sensing based on the luminous intensity, the self-defined parameter ( Q ) is also introduced as a dual-mode factor for sensing the stress velocity. Impressively, the fabricated LiTaO 3 :Tb 3+ film is capable of generating discernible ML signals even when supplied with strains as low as 500 µst. This is the current minimum strain value that can drive green-emitting ML. This study offers an ideal photonic platform for exploring the potential applications of rare-earth-doped elastico-ML materials in remote interaction devices, high-precision stress sensors, and single-molecule biological imaging.

Mechanical luminescence (ML) is the conversion of mechanical energy into light energy when a material is subjected to a force. It is challenging to develop ML materials with tunable luminescent properties by single ion doping, which have broad application prospects in the fields of stress sensing and dynamic signature anticounterfeiting. In this study, a Pr 3+ doped Sr 2 Ga 2 GeO 7 tunable ML material is reported. Due to the traps resulting from unequal substitution of Pr 3+ –Sr 2+ in [SrO 6 ] heptahedra, the deep/shallow traps redistribution occurs towards a multicolor ML from red to green. In addition, even after continuous friction sliding force (15 N), the ML intensities can be recovered after ultraviolet pre-irradiation, indicating that Sr 2 Ga 2 GeO 7 : Pr 3+ has excellent ML emission stability. Based on thermoluminescence analysis, potential PersL and ML mechanisms are further elaborated by a lattice engineering (trap regulation) strategy. In all, the development of single-ion doped multicolor ML materials may have crucial research value and show a variety of potential applications in the fields of anticounterfeiting and information encryption.

Porous conductive polyurethane (PU) sponges were prepared by combining a sugar-templated fabrication of porous polyurethane elastomer and the in-situ polymerization of pyrrole inside the sponges. The conductive sponges had a uniform porous structure similar to the sugar cube templates and a unique micro-wrinkled structure of polypyrrole (PPy). Moreover, the conductive sponges exhibited good mechanical properties and electrical conductivity by the combination of elastomeric PU and conductive PPy , which make the conductive PPy-PU sponges as good candidates for pressure and strain sensitive materials. It was shown that a single PPy-PU conductive sponge was not only sensitive to large forces, but also sensitive to the tiny deformation by small forces such as 0.1 N, thus realizing a wide-range detection of pressure forces from 0.1 N to 200 N. Furthermore, the detection range could be further enlarged to more than 800 N by assembling a sponge array. A PPy-PU sponge matrix was also designed and showed potential application in multi-site position detection. These sugar-templated conductive sponges may find application for sensors in human physiological movement and intelligent monitoring.

A series of novel red emitting Mn2+-activated SrZnSO phosphors were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction at high temperature. The photoluminescence (PL) and mechanoluminescence (ML) properties of these Mn2+-activated SrZnSO phosphors with different Mn2+ concentrations were investigated. With increasing the concentration of Mn2+ from x = 0 to 0.04, the unit cell volume increased from 153.82 to 154.19 Å3 while the optical band gap decreased from 3.74 to 3.43 eV. The site occupation of Mn2+ in the host lattice was demonstrated by Rietveld refinement, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum, and the spectroscopic properties. A broad band emission peak at 603 nm of SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) with an excitation wavelength of 318 nm was attributed to electronic transitions of Mn2+ from the 4T1(4G) level to the 6A1(6S) level. The lifetime of SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) decreased monotonously from 2.97 to 0.82 ms with increasing Mn2+ concentration. In particular, intense emission of red light from SrZn1−xMnxSO (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.04) under compressive load could be observed even with the naked eye, indicating that SrZn1−xMnxSO could be used for stress sensors or stress imaging. There was a linear correlation between the ML intensity and external load in SrZn1−xMnxSO, and the ML intensity could be recovered under UV light irradiation. Considering its advantages of non-destruction, reproducibility, and high ML intensity, SrZn1−xMnxSO might be useful for non-destructive detection of stress.

Flexible electronic devices with biological therapeutic and sensing properties are one of the current research directions. Here, a multifunctional hydrogel for stress sensing and wound healing was prepared by a simple one-pot method and a solution replacement method. Among them, zwitterionic polymers promote wound healing by promoting the polarization of M2 macrophages, collagen deposition, and blood vessel formation. Glycerin can significantly improve the resilience and frost resistance of the hydrogel, ensuring that a sensor made using the hydrogel can work normally in a cold environment. In addition, zwitterionic polymers are highly biocompatible, providing excellent antibacterial adhesion to aid the wound healing process, and good electrical conductivity enhances sensing sensitivity and stability. Based on these properties, multifunctional hydrogels could detect human vital activities while promoting wound healing, providing new ideas for the fields of diagnosis and wound dressing.

Three-dimensional and lightweight carbon aerogels are promising for next-generation wearable devices . As the most abundant renewable resource on the planet, wood provides a green and sustainable raw material for the manufacture of lightweight and elastic carbon materials. Here, a simple and sustainable design is proposed to directly prepare elastic carbon aerogel with a layered structure from the wood. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) was deposited on a wood aerogel matrix without lignin and hemicellulose by in situ growth. The presence of ZIF-L significantly reduced the volume shrinkage of aerogel during carbonization, and the carbonized ZIF-L improves the contact area and provides electron transport path. The prepared aerogel has a stress of 42 kPa under 80% strain, and the elastic strength and volume remain both above 98% after 200 times of compression, indicating that the aerogel has excellent compressibility and fatigue resistance . Based on this particular structural design, as-obtained aerogel shows excellent sensitivity as pressure sensors to detect subtle signals. In addition, the carbon aerogel can be directly assembled into a all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor that show promising electrochemical performance and could be potential candidates for high-performance supercapacitors in wearable devices.

Flexible electronics have demonstrated various strategies to enhance the sensory ability for tactile perception and wearable physiological monitoring. Fibrous microstructures have attracted much interest because of their excellent mechanical properties and fabricability. Herein, a structurally robust fibrous mat was first fabricated by electrospinning, followed by a sequential process of functionalization utilizing ultrasonication treatment and in situ polymerization growth. Electrospun polyurethane (PU) microfibers were anchored with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to form conductive paths along each fiber by a scalable ultrasonic cavitation treatment in an MWCNT suspension. After, a layer of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was grown on the surface of PU fibers decorated with MWCNTs to enhance the conductive conjunctions of MWCNTs. Due to the superior electromechanical behaviors and mechanical reinforcement of PEDOT, the PEDOT/MWCNT@PU mat-based device exhibits a wide working range (0–70 kPa), high sensitivity (1.6 kPa −1 ), and good mechanical robustness (over 18,000 cycles). The PEDOT/MWCNT@PU mat-based sensor also demonstrates a good linear response to different temperature variations because of the thermoelectricity of the PEDOT/MWCNT composite. This novel strategy for the fabrication of multifunctional fibrous mats provides a promising opportunity for future applications for high-performance wearable devices.
