A robust strategy for preparing Li-gradient LiNbO3: Yb/Er nanocrystals with improved dynamic force-optical response

Zhengren Tao,Fangrui Cheng,Yinghan Wang,Sijie Su,Enhai Song,Jiulin Gan,Shi Ye

The arrangement of lithium and niobium in the LiNbO 3 lattice is crucial to its notable ferroelectric, piezoelectric, ion conductive, and nonlinear optical properties. However, the synthesis of Li concentration-gradient nanocrystals remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we report a reliable method for synthesizing LiNbO 3 : Yb/Er nanocrystals with a Li-gradient through topochemical molten salt synthesis. We elucidate the Li-gradient characteristics using various analytical techniques, including depth-dependent elemental analysis. Variable-temperature upconversion luminescence spectroscopy provided insights into thermally induced surface and interior Li + diffusion. Our findings demonstrate that Li-gradient nanocrystals exhibit enhanced ferroelectric behavior and increased sensitivity to mechanical force in upconversion emission response. This study proposes a feasible universal strategy for synthesizing alkali metal niobate materials with controlled polarization, offering promising candidates for flexible, low-power optoelectronic devices.

Characterization and high pollutant removal ability of buoyant (C, N)–TiO2/PTFE flakes prepared by high-energy ball-milling

Wei Zhong,Ying Yu,Chun Du,Wei Li,Yinzhen Wang,Guannan He,Yuandong Xie,Qinyu He

Buoyant photocatalysts which are able to remove organic pollutants under all lighting and weather conditions are in demand for the treatment of large volumes of organic wastewater. Buoyant carbon and nitrogen co-doped TiO2/polytetrafluoroethylene (NCT/PTFE) flakes which meet these requirements were prepared by the high-energy ball-milling of NCT powder and PTFE. The physicochemical properties of the as-prepared composite flakes were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area determination, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as electrical conductivity and density measurements. The density of the composite flakes was 0.93 g cm−3, slightly lower than that of water, rendering them buoyant. And the used-and- regenerated (by UV-vis irradiation for 8 h) flakes are also buoyant. Adsorption in the dark and photodegradation experiments indicated that the as-prepared flakes have high dark adsorption and high photocatalytic properties. The 6 h photodegradation ratio of methylene orange (20 mg L−1, 100 mL, as a model dye) is 96.6%, and a close degradation ratio of 97% can be obtained by three-cycle dark adsorption with minor stirring (1 cycle includes 8 h dark adsorption followed by 8 h regeneration by UV-vis irradiation per cycle). The high adsorption and good photocatalytic properties can be mainly attributed to the large BET surface area resulting from the small NCT particle size. The as-prepared flakes have the potential for use in organic pollutant adsorption at any time and can be regenerated through light irradiation when sunlight is available. This kind of environmental protection material has great practical significance due to its low cost, simple preparation, thermal durability, highly efficient organic pollutant removal, large-volume treatment capacity, recyclability, and the possibility of working at any time.

NIR-Responsive Nanoplatform Based on CuO2 with Self-Supplied H2O2/O2 for Synergistic Photodynamic-Chemodynamic-Photothermal Therapy of Skin Abscesses

Yingnan Zhu,Jiahang Si,Tiantian Xu,Lan Zheng,Xinyu Xiao,Xiaohan Sun,He Ding,Yuze Dong

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) have emerged as promising strategies for treating skin abscesses. However, their therapeutic efficacy is fundamentally constrained by the hypoxic and hydrogen peroxide-deficient microenvironment characteristic of abscesses. Herein, we developed a near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive nanoplatform (ICG/CuO2@PCM) by encapsulating copper peroxide (CuO2) and indocyanine green (ICG) within a phase-change material (PCM), which enables control over self-supplied H2O2/O2 release via an NIR-triggered cascade. Upon irradiation, ICG-mediated photothermal conversion elevates the temperature beyond the PCM melting threshold, triggering a burst release of CuO2 and ICG. CuO2 generates hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through a Fenton-like reaction in the acidic wound microenvironment. Additionally, CuO2 can thermally decompose under photothermal conditions to produce a sustained oxygen supply, which ICG immediately converts into singlet oxygen (1O2), thereby enhancing PDT efficiency. Furthermore, photothermal therapy not only enhances the efficiency of CDT but also provides additional antibacterial support. Remarkably, ICG/CuO2@PCM (NPs), coupled with irradiation, accelerate abscess wound recovery by dispersing biofilm, killing bacteria, and promoting macrophage polarization toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype. Overall, this NIR-responsive nanoplatform highlights the promise in controlled modulation of microenvironment-adaptive antimicrobial strategies to overcome current limitations of hypoxic infections.

Nanoscale Profiling of 2D Surface Hydrophobicity Recognition of Environmental Media via AFM Measurements In Situ

Yuyao Zhang,Xiaoying Zhu,Baoliang Chen

The surface hydrophobicity and its heterogeneity are essential physicochemical properties of functional materials and environmental media, which directly influence many critical processes, such as the adsorption capacity of absorbents, water/fertilizer retention of soil and oil–water separation performances of membranes. The conventional method to characterize the surface hydrophobicity is based on the water/air/oil contact angle, which could only analyze the macroscale local hydrophobicity of the surfaces. Until now, it is impossible to profile two-dimensional surface hydrophobicity recognition in the nanoscale. Here we utilized an atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based chemical force spectroscopy to measure the topography and the local adhesion forces in the nanoscale. A novel approach is established to exploit adhesion forces to extract the hydrophobic attractions, enabling mapping of the surface hydrophobicity of environmental media in the nanoscale, which was validated by studying synthetic self-assembled monolayers of known composition. The new method was then applied to directly measure the hydrophobicity of porous biochar particles, to profile two-dimensional nanoscale hydrophobicity images of graphene oxide, and to observe the in situ variations of the graphite surface hydrophobicity in the adsorption process of benzylamine, which cannot be monitored by the conventional methods. The advantages of direct observations of the surface hydrophobicity recognition from a single AFM image dynamically and quantitatively may provide an in-depth insight into the surface hydrophobicity in the nanoscale.

AIEgen-loaded nanofibrous membrane as photodynamic/photothermal antimicrobial surface for sunlight-triggered bioprotection

Meng Li,Haifei Wen,Haoxuan Li,Zhi-Chao Yan,Ying Li,Lei Wang,Dong Wang,Ben Zhong Tang

The outbreak of infectious diseases such as COVID-19 causes an urgent need for abundant personal protective equipment (PPE) which leads to a huge shortage of raw materials. Additionally, the inappropriate disposal and sterilization of PPE may result in a high risk of cross-contamination. Therefore, the exploration of antimicrobial materials possessing both microbe interception and self-decontamination effects to develop reusable and easy-to-sterilize PPE is of great importance. Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active luminogen-loaded nanofibrous membrane ( [email protected] ) sharing sunlight-triggered photodynamic/photothermal anti-pathogen functions are prepared using the electrospinning technique. Thanks to its porous nanostructure, [email protected] shows excellent interception effects toward ultrafine particles and pathogenic aerosols. Benefiting from the superior photophysical properties of the AIE-active dopants, [email protected] exhibits integrated properties of wide absorption in visible light range, efficient ROS generation, and moderate photothermal conversion performance. A series of antimicrobial evaluations reveal that [email protected] could effectively inactivate pathogenic aerosols containing bacteria (inhibition rate: >99%), fungi (~88%), and viruses (>99%) within only 10 min sunlight irradiation. This study represents a new strategy to construct reusable and easy-to-sterilize hybrid materials for potential bioprotective applications.

A novel biocompatible PDA/IR820/DAP coating for antibiotic/photodynamic/photothermal triple therapy to inhibit and eliminate Staphylococcus aureus biofilm

Junkai Zeng,Yitong Wang,Zhenyu Sun,Haishuang Chang,Mi Cao,Jie Zhao,Kaili Lin,Youzhuan Xie

Surgical site infection (SSI) with instrumentation is an undesired and troublesome complication in orthopaedics. Surgical debridement is currently the main treatment option. However, the poor prognosis remains the major problem and over 40% of patients needed additional surgery to remove the implant. To eliminate SSI, antibacterial and biocompatible implants are urgently needed. Herein, a novel biocompatible polydopamine (PDA)-IR820-Daptomycin (DAP) coating with triple therapy functions was successfully fabricated to enhance the anti-infection ability and osteogenic property of titanium implants. In which, PDA served as a biocompatible binder to immobilize IR820 and DAP, and possessed photothermal and osteogenic properties. The releasing of DAP inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and damaged the bacterial membrane. Meanwhile, after 808 nm laser irradiation, the combination of hyperthermia generated by PDA and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) produced by IR820 eradicated the biofilm noninvasively. Furthermore, this coating successfully accelerated glutathione (GSH) oxidation and destroyed the bacterial membrane, reaching an anti-bacterial efficiency of 97.2% in vitro . Additionally, the coating significantly stimulated the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stem cells (rBMSCs). In vivo, Ti-PDA-IR820-DAP reached an anti-bacterial efficiency of 97.9% in a S. aureus biofilm-infected rat model with 15 min of irradiation at 50 °C and drastically promoted the bone-implant osseointegration in a rat femur condyle defect model. The present study demonstrates that combining antibiotics and phototherapy represents a feasible way to treat bone-implant-associated infections.

Gecko-inspired ultrasensitive multifunctional mechano-optical smart membranes

Yang Liu,Shaoxin Song,Meng Liu,Yue Hu,Lu-wen Zhang,Hyunsik Yoon,Lili Yang,Dengteng Ge

Mechano-optical materials are of great importance in smart window, security, display and camouflages. However, fabricating ultrasensitive optical devices with wide range still remains great challenging. Inspired from the fast tail amputation of gecko utilizing weak non-ossificated septum, herein, we report an ultrasensitive mechano-optical membrane based on weak dye layer between silica nanoparticles and soft polydimethylsiloxane matrix. Owing to the light scattering from dye-induced internal cavitation, the transmittance dramatically decreases by ~44% at initial small strain level (15%) and a high sensitivity ( S  > 2) is kept within an abroad strain range (0~35%). Moreover, a high total transmittance tuning range of ~75% is exhibited. Simulation and experimental monitoring demonstrate the effective weakening of interface energy. The potential applications in smart window, sensor, anti-counterfeiting also exhibit the multifunctionality of our smart membranes. This facile and low-cost approach enables the large-scale production and applications of mechano-optical membranes and this interface design provides a general way to develop ultrasensitive mechano-responsive materials.

HAase/GSH dual-responsive mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles for synergistic photodynamic/photothermal/pharmacological antibacterial therapy

Wei Guo,Yunhan Huang,Jingrui Chang,Xinyu Wang,Bo Lu

Mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (MONs) are promising drug carriers with excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. In the context of the bacterial infection microenvironment, a hyaluronidase (HAase)/glutathione (GSH) dual-responsive degradable nanoplatform based on MON (ICG/CIP@MON@PEI-HA) has been developed for the multimodal treatment of bacterial infection. In this work, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and indocyanine green (ICG) are physically adsorbed into the MON, polyethyleneimine (PEI) is electrostatically adsorbed onto the MON surface, and hyaluronic acid (HA) is grafted onto the amino groups of PEI via the amide bonds. The overexpression of HAase at bacterial infection sites enables HA shell degradation, and positively charged PEI is exposed, which facilitates nanoparticle binding to negatively charged bacteria. Also, owing to the protonation of amine groups, PEI is swelled in the acidic environment of bacterial infection, which favours drug release. Subsequently, overexpressed GSH breaks the disulfide bonds in the MON, triggering structural degradation that inhibits carrier accumulation and accelerates drug release even further. According to in vitro antibacterial evaluations, the antibacterial effect can be enhanced to 100% when phototherapy and pharmaceutical therapy are combined. In vitro cytotoxicity assays have demonstrated that ICG/CIP@MON@PEI-HA possesses excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, this study offers a potential approach for developing biodegradable nanoplatforms for the combined treatment of bacterial infection.

Small organic molecule-based nanoparticles with red/near-infrared aggregation-induced emission for bioimaging and PDT/PTT synergistic therapy

Mengqian Yang,Jingran Deng,Huifang Su,Shuangxi Gu,Jie Zhang,Aiguo Zhong,Fengshou Wu

Organic nanomaterials with efficient ROS generation and high photothermal conversion efficiency have emerged as a new generation therapeutic agent for PDT/PTT synergistic cancer treatment. However, most of the organic nanomaterials exhibited weak emission in water because of the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, which seriously hampers their biological application in fluorescence bioimaging. In this study, we design and synthesize a new organic small molecule (T-BDP) with a donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) structure by the conjugation of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and triphenylamine (TPA). Moreover, a 1,8-naphthalenediimide (NI) structure with electron-withdrawing ability is introduced onto the core of BODIPY to further enhance the intramolecular charge transfer, leading to the redshift of absorption to the near-infrared region. T-BDP displays significant aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance, probably due to the presence of two twisted TPA groups onto the BODIPY core. Accordingly, after self-assembly into nanoparticles, T-BDP NPs exhibit strong near-infrared emission in water. Under single 635 nm laser irradiation, T-BDP NPs could generate reactive oxygen species and heat simultaneously. The photothermal conversion efficiency of T-BDP NPs is determined to be 50.9%. The low dark toxicity and high photocytotoxicity of T-BDP NPs are verified against A549 cells using the MTT assay and the AM/PI staining method. Due to the strong emission of T-BDP NPs, their accumulation and subcellular localization in cancer cells are observed using a laser confocal fluorescence microscope. The results demonstrate that T-BDP NPs are mainly located in the lysosomes of cancer cells. Thus, the as-prepared small molecule-based AIE nanoparticles hold great potential for fluorescence imaging-guided PDT/PTT synergistic tumor therapy.

Reduction/pH-responsive disassemblable MOF-microbial nanohybrid for targeted tumor penetration and synergistic therapy

Xuemei Zeng,Pengjie Li,Shuangqian Yan,Bi-Feng Liu

Nanomedicine that combines nanomaterials and nanotechnologies has been attracting intensive attention for tumor treatment and achieved significant advances. However, their therapeutic efficiency is still limited by the passive circulating and enrichment of the currently widely used nanomaterial carries. Instead, an active nanomaterial carrier with tumor-taxis-like behavior holds the potential to further leap tumor targeting and therapeutic efficiency. Herein, for the first time, we show that a tumor microenvironment responsive disassemblable approach, based on tumor-targeted Escherichia coli bacteria linked with degradable zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) through disulfide bond-contained polymers, can deliver multiple drugs into deep tumor tissue. The carried ZIF-8 nanoparticles will detach from the Escherichia coli via disulfide bond breakage under high concentration glutathione in tumor sites. Furthermore, the small size ZIF-8 nanoparticles can penetrate whole tumor tissue and release drug molecules (doxycycline and indocyanine green) upon pH-responsive degradation. Under light irradiation, indocyanine green generates reactive oxygen species and mild hyperthermia, realizing a photodynamic/photothermal/chemical synergistic therapy along with the doxycycline. In a mouse model, the as-prepared microbial nanohybrid accumulates and releases the therapeutics throughout the tumor tissue and shows a better tumor inhibition efficacy compared to the ZIF-8 and non-disassemblable ZIF-8/microbial platforms. Thus, this work may establish a new strategy for enhancing tumor penetration and targeting and improving treatment efficiency of nanomaterials through a tumor microenvironment responsive disassemblable microbial nanohybrid.

Acceptor-engineering tailored type-I photosensitizer with aggregation-induced NIR-II emission for cancer multimodal phototheranostics

Li Jiangao,Niu Niu,Wang Deliang,Liu Xue,Qin Yi,Wang Lei,Tang Ben Zhong,Wang Dong

Exploration of single molecular species synchronously featured by long excitation/emission wavelength, accurate diagnosis, and effective therapy, remains supremely appealing to implement high-performance cancer phototheranostics. However, those previously established phototheranostic agents are undiversified and stereotyped in terms of structural skeleton, and generally exhibit insufficient phototheranostic outcomes. Herein, we innovatively utilized indanone-condensed thiadiazolo[3,4-g]quinoxaline (ITQ) as electron acceptor to construct novel photosensitizer with second near-infrared (NIR-II) emission. Experimental study and theoretical calculation demonstrated that comparing with the counterparts constituting by widely employed NIR-II building block benzobisthiadiazole (BBTD) and 6,7-diphenylthiadiazoloquinoxaline (DPTQ), ITQ-based photosensitizer (TITQ) showed superior aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics, much stronger type-I reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and prominent photothermal conversion capacity. Furthermore, TITQ nanoparticles with excellent biocompatibility were capable of effectively accumulating in the tumor site and visualizing tumor through fluorescence-photoacoustic-photothermal trimodal imaging with highly spatiotemporal resolution, and completely eliminating tumor by type-I photodynamic-photothermal therapy.

NIR-Triggered and ROS-Boosted Nanoplatform for Enhanced Chemo/PDT/PTT Synergistic Therapy of Sorafenib in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Wang Chonggao,Cheng Xiaolan,Peng Hao,Zhang Yewei

Although being the first-line treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), sorafenib (SOR) outcome is limited due to drug resistance and low tumor accumulation. Herein, with MnO 2 as photothermal agent and chlorine6 (Ce6) as photosensitizer, a tumor-targeting and NIR-triggered multifunctional nanoplatform loading sorafenib (MnO 2 -SOR-Ce6@PDA-PEG-FA, MSCPF) was constructed. Owing to oxygen generator MnO 2 , MSCPF could generate excessive ROS, thus can alleviate tumor hypoxia and improve sorafenib accumulation in cancer cells. Besides, ROS production further strengthens Ce6-mediated PDT and PDA-mediated PTT. By exploiting these features, MSCPF exhibited excellent antitumor effects on HCC in the in vitro and in vivo studies, compared to solo sorafenib or PDT/PTT treatment. Further mechanism experiments suggested that MSCPF could inhibit P-gp expression and induce ferroptosis via deactivation of GPX4 and SLC7A11, which ultimately enhanced the antitumor efficacy of SOR. In summary, our work highlights a promising NIR-triggered and ROS-boosted nanoplatform for enhanced chemo/PDT/PTT synergistic therapy of SOR in HCC treatment.
