Force-indicating smart adhesives enabled by mechanochromic elastomer

Yang Xiang,Boying Zhang,Changgeng Zhang,He Zhu,Qi Zhang,Shiping Zhu

Adhesives are essential for binding materials and ensuring the integrity of structural systems. However, adhesive joints often experience force accumulation, leading to potential failure, which remains challenging to monitor in real-time. In this study, we introduce a simple, cost-effective, and versatile strategy for fabricating force-indicating smart adhesives (FISAs) using commercially available materials, including polyacrylate matrices and silicone microspheres as fillers. These adhesives exhibit a pronounced mechanochromic response, driven by reversible cavitation within the elastomer matrix, enabling both qualitative and quantitative visualization of stress distribution at adhesive joints. This capability allows for early detection of adhesive failure, offering a proactive warning mechanism. The adhesive properties, including force sensitivity, are highly tunable by adjusting the polyacrylate matrix composition, microsphere content, size, and interfacial strength, making these FISAs adaptable to a wide range of substrates. This work represents a significant advancement in smart adhesive technology, combining enhanced monitoring capabilities with broad applicability across diverse scenarios.

Asymmetric and Ultrasensitive Structural Color Response in Nanochain-Embedded Photonic Composites

Quanqian Lyu,Zhuoyuan Lin,Peng Wang,Lianbin Zhang,Jintao Zhu

Mechanochromic photonic crystals, capable of altering structural colors in response to external forces, are emerging intelligent materials in various fields, such as visual sensors and anti-counterfeiting technologies. However, conventional mechanical responses of photonic crystals mainly rely on stretching or compression, resulting in symmetric and limited mechanochromic effects due to restricted changes in lattice spacing, particularly limiting the recognition of the direction of force. Here, asymmetric and ultrasensitive structural color responses are reported in colloidal photonic composites featuring embedded one-dimensional (1D) photonic nanochains of colloidal particles based on shear-induced lattice orientation change. It is shown that shearing deformation tilts the photonic nanochains within the polymer matrix, leading to a remarkable and asymmetric color shift depending on shear force and observing directions. The asymmetric response encourages to develop ultrasensitive twist sensors capable of detecting subtle twisting movements as low as 0.2° and twist direction. Furthermore, by integrating magnetic and deformation orientation control, dynamic optical anti-counterfeiting labels capable of displaying highly intricate patterns are devised. This unique shear-induced color-shifting mechanism expands the responsiveness of mechanochromic materials, with broad implications in many other areas, including structural health monitoring, soft robotics, and artificial skin.

Visible-light-programmed patterning in dynamically bonded cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer

Liu Jiale,Zhang Shuoning,Wang Zichen,Xia Xinzhao,Zhang Jianying,Yu Yinuo,Xiao Yixian,Ren Yunxiao,Chen Jiajun,Yang Bo,Xie Wenting,Hu Wei,Yang Huai

Optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) can be tuned by an external field, however, it will spontaneously restore to the original state after the field is removed. Here, we introduce diselenide dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) into CLCEs, whose optical properties can be reversibly and precisely tuned under the combined action of force and light. The tuned optical properties will be written into and remembered by the CLCEs, thus a programming effect is achieved. The prepared dynamical diselenide bonded CLCE films have the typical reversibly mechanochromism property, and high-resolution colourful patterning can be programmed by adjusting exposure time and intensity of masked visible-light under different tensile or compressive strain states. The DCB-CLCEs combine the novel anisotropy of CLCEs and the dynamic chain exchangeable ability of DCBs, which endows the materials with reprogrammable optical properties. We demonstrate a simple strategy of writing naked-eye high-resolution colourful patterning into a film with mechanochromism property by thermal or visible-light, it shows great potential in display devices, anticounterfeiting labels, sensors, optical films and smart materials.

Colorimetric Ionic Organohydrogels Mimicking Human Skin for Mechanical Stimuli Sensing and Injury Visualization

Wenlian Qiu,Changgeng Zhang,Guoqing Chen,He Zhu,Qi Zhang,Shiping Zhu

Artificial skins with sensing ability have great potential in applications of wearable devices and soft robotics. Inspired by the functions of human skins including sensing stimuli via electrical signal and bruising for injury indication, an ionic conductive and mechanochromic organohydrogel is synthesized and demonstrated as ionic skin (I-skin). The gel consisting of mechanochromophore cross-linked micelles is mechanically robust, stretchable, and deformation durable with minor hysteresis, and it also displays good solvent retention. The change of relative resistance during elongation and compression suggests a high sensitivity. An optical change from pale yellow to bruise-like blue-purple color is observed under a large deformation. The ionic conductive organohydrogel as I-skin is attached to different parts of the human body with movements mimicking various body-bruising scenarios, demonstrating successful perception and visualization of mechanical stimuli. The work vividly presents a strain sensor with the functions of injury visualization and damage warning for mechanical impacts. The I-skin can be potentially used in the applications including prosthetic devices, wearable electronics, and intelligent robots.

Mechanochromic Photonic Vitrimer Thermal Management Device Based on Dynamic Covalent Bond

Yuan Guan,Hongyu Li,Shufen Zhang,Wenbin Niu

Flexible self-healing thermal management devices are increasingly in demand due to their high flexibility, low driving voltage, and excellent stability of thermal property. In this paper, the design of mechanochromic self-healing thermal management devices is reported based on photonic vitrimer through self-healing dynamic covalent bond. A series of new photonic vitrimers i first prepared by dynamic disulfide covalent bond and PS@SiO 2 photonic crystals. The resulting photonic vitrimer exhibits bright structural colors, large tensile strain (>1000%), high mechanical strength (>10 MPa) and self-healing ability (>95% efficiency). More importantly, the structural color remains constant after 10000 stretching/releasing cycles, demonstrating excellent mechanical stability, creep-resistance, and durability. Taking advantage of the above features, a novel mechanochromic flexible wireless thermal management (MFW) device is developed by semi-embedding the photonic vitrimer in a thermally conductive carbon nanotube film and then integrating it with a Bluetooth module and a control chip. Interestingly, the MFW device exhibits mechanochromic property, fast thermal response, low driving voltage (103 °C, at 3 V), and precise temperature control. Notably, the device even remains electrothermal performance (105 °C) after self-healing. This work provides new insight into the self-healing photonic materials, and the device shows promising applications in wearable electronics, vitro physiotherapy, and personal heating.

Creating a bionic scaffold via light-curing liquid crystal ink to reveal the role of osteoid-like microenvironment in osteogenesis

Kun Liu,Lin Li,Yizhi Li,Yiting Luo,Zhaoyu Zhang,Wei Wen,Shan Ding,Yadong Huang,Mingxian Liu,Changren Zhou,Binghong Luo

Osteoid plays a crucial role in directing cell behavior and osteogenesis through its unique characteristics, including viscoelasticity and liquid crystal (LC) state. Thus, integrating osteoid-like features into 3D printing scaffolds proves to be a promising approach for personalized bone repair. Despite extensive research on viscoelasticity, the role of LC state in bone repair has been largely overlooked due to the scarcity of suitable LC materials. Moreover, the intricate interplay between LC state and viscoelasticity in osteogenesis remains poorly understood. Here, we developed innovative hydrogel scaffolds with osteoid-like LC state and viscoelasticity using digital light processing with a custom LC ink. By utilizing these LC scaffolds as 3D research models, we discovered that LC state mediates high protein clustering to expose accessible RGD motifs to trigger cell-protein interactions and osteogenic differentiation, while viscoelasticity operates via mechanotransduction pathways. Additionally, our investigation revealed a synergistic effect between LC state and viscoelasticity, amplifying cell-protein interactions and osteogenic mechanotransduction processes. Furthermore, the interesting mechanochromic response observed in the LC hydrogel scaffolds suggests their potential application in mechanosensing. Our findings shed light on the mechanisms and synergistic effects of LC state and viscoelasticity in osteoid on osteogenesis, offering valuable insights for the biomimetic design of bone repair scaffolds.

Reversible Information Storage Based on Rhodamine Derivative in Mechanochromic Cholesteric Liquid Crystalline Elastomer

Shuoning Zhang,Chang Sun,Jianying Zhang,Shengyu Qin,Jiale Liu,Yunxiao Ren,Lanying Zhang,Wei Hu,Huai Yang,Dengke Yang

With the demand for the diversity and security of information deliveries increasing, advanced security tag for data encryption has attracted great interest from the scientific community. It is promising to achieve composite dynamic information storage by the combination of multisource stimuli-responsive mechanism. Here, mechano- and chemochromism cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) are prepared by introducing a rhodamine lactam-based functional trigger by two different strategies, one of which is one-pot method and another is postfunctionalization method. The performances of the CLCEs from two strategies are investigated, which are demonstrated to be effective methods in endowing material with new function, and suitable for different application scenarios. The composite material combines the force-induced structural periodicity variation of CLCE and the pigmentary and fluorescent properties changes of the functional trigger caused by the chemical environment. The orthogonal construction of dynamic structural color pattern and reversible pigmentary and fluorescent colors pattern enable the information in the CLCE to display double encryption mode, which exhibits great potential in the information storage and anti-counterfeiting.
