The transition of material transparency induced by mechanical stimulation plays a crucial role in applications such as information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, and smart windows. However, developing a multifunctional composite film that simultaneously possesses high resilience, high sensitivity, low energy consumption, and reusability remains a significant challenge. In this work, homogeneous silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles were modified by a commercially available coupling agent KH570, enabling it to be chemically bonded to the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer networks, which enhanced the interfacial interaction and allowed the periodic structure of SiO 2 to return to its original state effectively both before and after stretching. After undergoing 200 cycles of testing, the composite film exhibited low energy dissipation, with its transmittance maintaining high stability within the range of 90–20 %. At −50 °C, the maximum loss factor of the composite film was ∼0.24, indicating that it retained high resilience even at low temperature. The composite film is a promising candidate for smart window, as it can be operated with low energy input solely through mechanical force. Furthermore, we adopted advanced imprinting technology, utilizing selectively designed molds to embed arbitrary encrypted information. By controlling the imprinting duration to 5, 30 and 80 s, we achieved differentiated information displays under the same strain conditions on a single film. Therefore, this work can provide new insights into fields such as smart windows, information encryption, and strain sensing.

Droplet-embedded structures are useful in functionalizing polymer composites but difficult to prepare. Herein, we report a facile self-born method for creating droplets in supramolecular gels to mediate the material’s functions. This method is based on the amplification of the defects of polymer matrices generated in curing by swelling-driving reconfiguration of supramolecular polymer networks. The system of poly(urea-co-polydimethylsiloxane) that can cross-link via hydrogen-bond interaction is used to demonstrate our concept. The elastomer matrices are prepared via a casting method and exhibit a heterogeneous structure with both strong- and weak-cross-linking domains. When these materials are swelled in solvents, solvent molecules concentrate in the weak-cross-linking domains to nucleate. With the reconfiguration of the matrices, the nuclei grow into pure droplets, leading to the formation of droplet-embedded structures. This method is applicable to different material systems. We also show that obtained coatings with such droplet-embedded structures exhibit various interesting properties including self-replenishment of the surface liquid, mechanoresponsiveness, and self-healing ability. Moreover, after the droplets are consumed, this method can be used to regenerate the droplet-embedded structure for refunctionalizing the materials. Therefore, we envision its applications in preparation of many useful polymer composites.

Biomechanical models are mathematical representations of human structure. These models are used to analyse joint and injury mechanics and design of prosthetic devices for human body under various conditions. Biomechanical model development involves the integration of knowledge from various fields, including mechanics, biology, physiology, and mathematics. Biomechanical models have become more significant in the healthcare sector as researchers strive to offer better medical supplies and ride comfort. It has uses in automobile and sports science as well, to create human dummies for accident and segmental vibration transmissibility study, improve training routines, and prevent injuries. These biomechanical models might be anything from straightforward lumped parameter models to intricate multi-body models. The virtues, weaknesses, and contemporary uses of lumped parameter modelling and multi body modelling in biomechanical modelling are discussed in this article. Subsequently, emphasised the recent modelling improvements and explored the future direction of biomechanical modelling. Researchers and professionals who wish to apply biomechanical models to comprehend human movement and enhance performance may find this review to be helpful.

Ceramic composites are promising candidates as structural materials for future fission and fusion reactors. In present work, Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -SiC ternary ceramic composites were irradiated with 2.0 MeV He-ions at 300 and 800 ℃. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction results confirmed that there was irradiation induced shift and broadening of diffraction peaks, but no amorphization of Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -SiC composite were observed up to fluence of 1.72 × 10 18 ions/cm 2 . Transmission electron microscopy observations showed that throughout the entire irradiation region, nano-sized helium bubbles are mostly distributed in Al 2 O 3 grains and partly in ZrO 2 grains, while no detectable bubbles are observed in SiC grains. No obvious agglomeration of bubbles was found at grain/phase boundaries. By using nanoindentation technique, slight hardening or softening was confirmed for the samples irradiated at 300 and 800 ℃ respectively. The absence of amorphization and surface exfoliation indicating the Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -SiC composite exhibits remarkable resistance to He-ions irradiation.

Bidirectional freeze casting combined with pressure infiltration has demonstrated significant potential as an effective approach for fabricating bioinspired lamellar composites with excellent strength and toughness. However, their dynamic mechanical response remains underexplored. In this study, B 4 C/2024Al composites with long-range ordered nacre-like architectures were fabricated using bidirectional freeze casting followed by pressure infiltration. The mechanical properties and deformation behavior under both quasi-static and dynamic compression conditions were systematically investigated. The results reveal that dynamic compressive strength and strain were significantly higher than their quasi-static counterparts, largely attributed to strain rate hardening and localized matrix melting. Compared to unidirectionally structured composites, the bidirectionally structured ones exhibited superior mechanical performance, achieving a maximum compressive strength of 1088.6 MPa at a strain rate of 3000 s −1 (40 vol% B 4 C/2024Al composite). A clear dependence of flow stress and energy absorption capability on B 4 C volume fraction was observed. As B 4 C content increased, the compressive strength rose, but dynamic strain energy density showed a decreasing trend beyond 20 vol% due to reduced ductility. Specifically, the energy density peaked at 133.08 MJ/m 3 for the 20 vol% composite and declined with further ceramic addition, indicating a trade-off between strength and impact energy absorption. The enhanced toughness under dynamic loading is primarily attributed to adiabatic shear localization in the aluminum matrix, which facilitates localized softening and strain accommodation. Additional contributions include crack deflection and branching within the hard ceramic layers, as well as plastic deformation and thermal softening-induced toughening mechanisms in the metallic phase. These findings highlight the promise of nacre-inspired B 4 C/Al composites for advanced lightweight armor systems, offering an optimized balance between strength, toughness, and energy absorption under high-strain-rate loading.
