Energy autonomous electronic skin with direct temperature-pressure perception

Yunfeng Chen,Hao Lei,Zhenqiu Gao,Jingya Liu,Fangjia Zhang,Zhen Wen,Xuhui Sun

Mimicking multiple perceptions of human skin is a basic requirement for artificial intelligence electronic skin (e-skin) perception. Despite significant advances in e-skin for multifunctional sensing, achieving self-powered and truly distinguishing between different stimulus signals still remain challenges. Here, we developed a flexible self-powered temperature-pressure dual functional e-skin (STPES) based on the coupling triboelectric and thermoelectric effects. It can effectively convert temperature and pressure stimuli into two independent voltage signals without signal interference. In addition, the temperature sensing process is powered by natural temperature gradient , with the resolution of 0.5 K and the sensitivity of 220 µV K −1 . The self-powered pressure sensor based on triboelectric effect can detect the pressure over a wide range (1 Pa-100 kPa) with the maximum sensitivity of 1.394 V kPa −1 . The dual-parameter e-skin attached to the robotic arm is demonstrated to detect the weight and temperature of water cup simultaneously. This work provides a promising prototype for passive multi-parameters e-skin, which has great potential for application in wearable health monitoring systems and artificial intelligence perception.

Exceed the Traditional Dead Leather to Intelligent E-Skin

Yue Yao,Ziyang Fan,Xinglong Gong,Danyi Li,Wei Yang,Ken Cham-Fai Leung,Xinyi Wang,Shuai Liu,Junjie Yang,Shouhu Xuan

Electronic skin (E-skin) that emulates the human skin's three basic functions (perception, protection, and thermoregulation) has broad applied potential in smart healthcare and human-machine interaction (HMI). To fully realize the integration functions and simulate the structure of real skin, this work reactivates the “dead leather” back to intelligent E-skin (Leather/Ag/Polyborosiloxane elastomer) and further develops its application in harsh scenarios. The Ag nanowires/flakes incorporated leather fiber acts as the dermis layer to endow the E-skin with good electric conductivity, force sensitivity, and electrothermal management. The hierarchical structure allows the incident electromagnetic waves to be reflected and absorbed multiple times, possessing a superior electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding value (≈75 dB). Due to the unique rate-dependent shear stiffening effects originated from the polyborosiloxane elastomer, the E-skin achieves significant force buffering capacity (≈47%) and excellent energy dissipation (over 85%). Moreover, the LAP E-skin exhibits unconventional sensing behavior, including piezoresistive sensing and impact stimulation, allowing for differentiation between low-energy and high-energy stimuli. On this basis, an elegant smart vest is successfully developed with exceptional thermal therapy, accurate contact perception, and wireless impact monitoring, demonstrating broad potential in the next generation of wearable protective equipment and smart robotics.

Multifunctional superhydrophobic conductive sponge for real-time monitoring of oil-water separation and amphibious human activity

Yongming Lv,Zhenming Chu,Zhiguo Zhang,Menglin Qiao,Desheng Huang,Ran Tao,Xiaoxing Fan,Wei Zhang

Composite materials with porous structures show good application prospects in the field of oil-water separation because it is beneficial for oil absorption and storage. However, it is still a challenge to achieve real-time monitoring during oil-water separation and amphibious monitoring of human motion. In this paper, a multifunctional sponge PDMS/rGO/PDA/MS with superhydrophobic and pressure perception properties was prepared by the dip-and-dry method. The multifunctional sponge exhibits excellent resistance to physical and chemical superhydrophobicity, including good chemical inertness (pH=2/13), robustness (10 anti-friction cycles), and compressibility (100 anti-compression cycles). Meanwhile, the multifunctional sponge showed good stability of pressure perception, including accurate identification of different pressures (200∼2000 Pa) and frequency (0.1∼0.5 Hz) of compression and fast response/recovery time (360/219 ms). Benefiting from its porous structure, durable super-hydrophobicity, and pressure sensing properties, the multifunctional sponge enables gravity-assisted oil-water separation of light/heavy oil, gravity/water pressure sensing, real-time monitoring of oil-water separation and amphibious monitoring of human movement. Therefore, this sponge shows potential as a new generation of multifunctional sponges with applications in oil-water separation and amphibious monitoring.

Programmable high-sensitivity iontronic pressure sensors support broad human-interactive perception and identification

Huang Yue,Hu Shaoxiong,Li Ying,Wang Rui,Yang Yuchen,Zhu Wei,Deng Yuan

Flexible pressure sensors are essential for human–machine interfaces and wearable devices, requiring accurate detection of diverse motion signals. However, challenges arise from material compressibility and mechanical limitations, hindering the development of sensors with both high sensitivity and wide sensing ranges, as well as the demand-driven designability. Here, iontronic sensors exhibiting distinct characteristics are developed via a skin-inspired gradient strategy with programmable performance of ultrahigh sensitivity (37,347.98 kPa −1 ) to 151.6 kPa or overall high sensitivity (130.93–1400.49 kPa −1 ) up to 956.7 kPa, capable of detecting both subtle arterial pulses and large motions like plantar pressure. Furthermore, the merit of ultrahigh sensitivity enables pressure sensors to record handwriting precisely and distinguish individual features, facilitating effective extraction of connotative information, and has been demonstrated in the proposed human-interactive system assisted with machine learning for individual authentication. The work provides valuable insight into reverse engineering of pressure sensors, promising benefits for broad intelligence applications.

Bimodal Tactile Sensor without Signal Fusion for User-Interactive Applications

Xiaole Ma,Chunfeng Wang,Ruilai Wei,Jiaqi He,Jing Li,Xianhu Liu,Fengchang Huang,Shuaipeng Ge,Juan Tao,Zuqing Yuan,Ping Chen,Dengfeng Peng,Caofeng Pan

Tactile sensors with multimode sensing ability are cornerstones of artificial skin for applications in humanoid robotics and smart prosthetics. However, the intuitive and interference-free reading of multiple tactile signals without involving complex algorithms and calculations remains a challenge. Herein a pressure–temperature bimodal tactile sensor without any interference is demonstrated by combining the fundamentally different sensing mechanisms of optics and electronics, enabling the simultaneous and independent sensing of pressure and temperature with the elimination of signal separation algorithms and calculations. The bimodal sensor comprises a mechanoluminescent hybrid of ZnS–CaZnOS and a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) thermoresistant material, endowing the unambiguous transduction of pressure and temperature into optical and electrical signals, respectively. This device exhibits the highest temperature sensitivity of −0.6% °C–1 in the range of 21–60 °C and visual sensing of the applied forces at a low limitation of 2 N. The interference-free and light-emitting characteristics of this device permit user-interactive applications in robotics for encrypted communication as well as temperature and pressure monitoring, along with wireless signal transmission. This work provides an unexplored solution to signal interference of multimodal tactile sensors, which can be extended to other multifunctional sensing devices.

Biomimetic Ion Channel Regulation for Temperature-Pressure Decoupled Tactile Perception

Naiwei Gao,Jiaoya Huang,Zhiwu Chen,Yegang Liang,Li Zhang,Zhengchun Peng,Caofeng Pan

The perception of temperature and pressure of skin plays a vital role in joint movement, hand grasp, emotional expression, and self-protection of human. Among many biomimetic materials, ionic gels are uniquely suited to simulate the function of skin due to its ionic transport mechanism. However, both the temperature and pressure sensing are heavily dependent on the changes in ionic conductivity, making it impossible to decouple the temperature and pressure signals. Here, a pressure-insensitive and temperature-modulated ion channel is designed by synergistic strategies for gel skeleton's compact packing and ultra-thin structure, mimicking the function of the temperature ion channel in human skin. This ion-confined gel can completely suppress the pressure response of the temperature sensing layer. Furthermore, a temperature-pressure decoupled ionic sensor is fabricated and it is demonstrated that the ionic sensor can sense complex signals of temperature and pressure. This novel and effective approach has great potential to overcome one of the current barriers in developing ionic skin and extending its applications.

Optical and electrical dual-mode tactile sensor with interlinked interfaces recording normal force and slip for closed-loop robotics

Kedong Shang,Changliu He,Jian Zhou,Peng Ling,Xulei Lu,Chunqiao Fu,Yong Zhang,Chuan Tang,Linmao Qian,Tingting Yang

The rapid development of electronic skin will allow disabled people and intelligent robots to interact more effectively with their surroundings. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to simultaneously capture multi-dimensional personalized information (including pressure and slip sensation) through simple device structure design with high stability under complex mechanical conditions. Here, a tactile sensor with simple structure and reliable performance (withstand considerable stretching, twisting, bending, and vibration) is designed for pressure and slip sensing. It is implemented by optical and electrical dual-mode sensing mechanisms and high toughness interlinked interface strategy (interfacial toughness ∼ 33.69 Jm −2 , nearly 5 times higher than control sample). This device is composed of a periodic microstructured piezoresistive layer and a triboelectrification-induced electroluminescent (TIEL) layer, both of which are based on the quasi-homogeneous PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) composite. The whole device possesses the characteristics of lightness, flexibility, and light-transmitting. Besides, the device could automatically locate and track the slip motion while detecting the normal pressure in a large range (0–––1,000 kPa). As an application demonstration, the sensor is installed on a flexible manipulator and combined with the closed-loop control system. Compared to a single electrical mode, the optical and electrical dual-mode tactile sensor could more accurately monitor the sliding of the clamped object, adjust the clamping force instantly, and avoid object slipping. The unique performance of the device shows great potential in trajectory recognition, artificial limbs, intelligent robots, and human–machine interfaces.

A Scalable Bacterial Cellulose Ionogel for Multisensory Electronic Skin

Geyuan Jiang,Gang Wang,Ying Zhu,Wanke Cheng,Kaiyue Cao,Guangwen Xu,Dawei Zhao,Haipeng Yu

Electronic skin (e-skin), a new generation of flexible electronics, has drawn interest in soft robotics, artificial intelligence, and biomedical devices. However, most existing e-skins involve complex preparation procedures and are characterized by single-sensing capability and insufficient scalability. Here, we report on a one-step strategy in which a thermionic source is used for the in situ molecularization of bacterial cellulose polymeric fibers into molecular chains, controllably constructing an ionogel with a scalable mode for e-skin. The synergistic effect of a molecular-scale hydrogen bond interweaving network and a nanoscale fiber skeleton confers a robust tensile strength (up to 7.8 MPa) and high ionic conductivity (up to 62.58 mS/cm) on the as-developed ionogel. Inspired by the tongue to engineer the perceptual patterns in this ionogel, we present a smart e-skin with the perfect combination of excellent ion transport and discriminability, showing six stimulating responses to pressure, touch, temperature, humidity, magnetic force, and even astringency. This study proposes a simple, efficient, controllable, and sustainable approach toward a low-carbon, versatile, and scalable e-skin design and structure–performance development.

Artificial Multi-Stimulus-Responsive E-Skin Based on an Ionic Film with a Counter-Ion Exchange Reagent

Baozhong Chen,Kangxin Shen,Yaping Li,Bo Huang,Huiming Su,Jintao Xu,Shuai Yang,Qi Zhou,Linfeng Lan,Junbiao Peng,Yong Cao

Sensing pressure and temperature are two important functions of human skin that integrate different types of tactile receptors. In this paper, a deformable artificial flexible multi-stimulus-responsive sensor is demonstrated that can distinguish mechanical pressure from temperature by measuring the impedance and the electrical phase at the same frequency without signal interference. The electrical phase, which is used for measuring the temperature, is totally independent of the pressure by controlling the surface micro-shapes and the ion content of the ionic film. By doping the counter-ion exchange reagent into the ionic liquid before pouring, the upper temperature measuring limit increases from 35 to 50 °C, which is higher than the human body temperature and the ambient temperature on Earth. The sensor shows high sensitivity to pressure (up to 0.495 kPa −1 ) and a wide temperature sensing range (−10 to 50 °C). A multimodal ion-electronic skin (IE M -skin) with an 8 × 8 multi-stimulus-responsive sensor array is fabricated and can successfully sense the distribution of temperature and pressure at the same time. Finally, the sensors are used for monitoring the touching motions of a robot-arm finger controlled by a remote interactive glove and successfully detect the touching states and the temperature changes of different objects.

Xinrong Zhi,Shifan Ma,Yifan Xia,Biao Yang,Siyu Zhang,Kangting Liu,Mingyuan Li,Shuhan Li,Wan Peiyuan,Xin Wang

Tactile sensor as core component of robotic haptics enables intelligent perception of external environment for smart robot. However, it is a critical challenge to realize simultaneously high-sensitivity pressure sensing and high-resolution tactile imaging of tactile sensor. Herein, a hierarchical hybrid tactile sensor array (HTSA), which is fabricated by vertically integrating top arrayed TENG layer and bottom arrayed capacitive pressure sensor layer, is developed to achieve simultaneous pressure sensing and tactile imaging for tactile pattern recognition. The capacitive pressure sensor array (8 × 8) can realize pressure sensing with a sensitivity of 238.73 kPa −1 . Meanwhile, the TENG-based tactile sensing array enables high-resolution tactile imaging of handwritten Chinese characters. More importantly, the HTSA-based tactile pattern recognition system (H-TPRS) is developed to achieve accurate user signature authentication. Based on handwriting behavior characteristics, an accuracy of 97.3% of tactile pattern recognition is achieved in identifying the different-user handwriting identical letters under assistance of convolutional neural network . Consequently, the H-TPRS can achieve high-sensitivity pressure sensing and high-resolution tactile imaging of Chinese characters for user authentication, which demonstrates potential application in the field of intelligent tactile perception .

A “One-Stone-Two-Birds” Strategy Constructed Hybrid Wearable Device Based on Chameleon-Inspired Integrated Pressure Sensing and Visualization

Tao Sun,Wenjing Yue,Tao Sun,Hongsen Niu,Yang Li

Conventional wearable devices mainly focus on physiological signal sensing, lack feedback for information, and rely on bulky display devices. Moreover, the external wired signal transmission in traditional physiological detection severely limits the practical application. Herein, inspired by the “one-stone-two-birds” ability of chameleon to sense external stimuli and change their colors, a visual pressure-sensing integrated hybrid device based on iontronic sensing and electrochromic display is proposed, in which the device structure is simplified by sharing electrodes and color-changing layers instead of the traditional two color-changing electrodes. The hybrid device based on the photocuring process simplified the preparation process, with its pressure-sensing unit exhibiting a sensitivity of 358.1 kPa⁻¹ and a response/recovery time of 16.8/28.0 ms, and color-changing unit having a colored/bleached time of 4.2/4.8 s. Utilizing its excellent performance, applications like quick response code encryption under alternating potential, visual info hiding/display under pressure perception, and physiological monitoring are explored and validated. In addition, a smart wireless wristband system is designed that monitors physiological signals in real time via Bluetooth transmission with a display that shows different motion states. It is envisioned that these strategies will have great potential for intelligence transmission encryption, interactive visual communication, and medical wireless monitoring.

All Resistive Pressure–Temperature Bimodal Sensing E-Skin for Object Classification

Shilei Han,Xinrong Zhi,Yifan Xia,Wenyu Guo,Qingqing Li,Delu Chen,Kangting Liu,Xin Wang

Electronic skin (E-skin) with multimodal sensing ability demonstrates huge prospects in object classification by intelligent robots. However, realizing the object classification capability of E-skin faces severe challenges in multiple types of output signals. Herein, a hierarchical pressure–temperature bimodal sensing E-skin based on all resistive output signals is developed for accurate object classification, which consists of laser-induced graphene/silicone rubber (LIG/SR) pressure sensing layer and NiO temperature sensing layer. The highly conductive LIG is employed as pressure-sensitive material as well as the interdigital electrode. Benefiting from high conductivity of LIG, pressure perception exhibits an excellent sensitivity of −34.15 kPa −1 . Meanwhile, a high temperature coefficient of resistance of −3.84%°C −1 is obtained in the range of 24–40 °C. More importantly, based on only electrical resistance as the output signal, the bimodal sensing E-skin with negligible crosstalk can simultaneously achieve pressure and temperature perception. Furthermore, a smart glove based on this E-skin enables classifying various objects with different shapes, sizes, and surface temperatures, which achieves over 92% accuracy under assistance of deep learning. Consequently, the hierarchical pressure–temperature bimodal sensing E-skin demonstrates potential application in human-machine interfaces, intelligent robots, and smart prosthetics.
