The applications of flexible sensors that can mimic biological skin have enormous potential in areas, such as artificial intelligence and healthcare detection. The existing rigid/flexible pressure sensors mainly rely on resistive or capacitive sensors, necessitating a continuous external power supply. The current self-powered sensors, such as triboelectric and piezoelectric, struggle to continuously measure static forces. Some piezoelectric sensors can detect static forces but require additional power or external resistors for static measurements. Developing a flexible sensor that can monitor various external stimuli like skin and does not require power can address these shortcomings. This article proposes a single-mode flexible pressure sensor based on the principle of air battery. By introducing different structures to the cathode and solid electrolyte of the battery, the sensor’s linearity and pressure detection range can be significantly improved. The sensor’s linearity exceeds 99% under pressures ranging from 0 to 45 kPa, with a response time of less than 50 ms. Besides, self-powered sensor can work continuously for over eight days. Testing shows that the sensor can mimic the functions of rapid adaptive (RA), slow adaptive (SA) cutaneous mechanoreceptors, and Krause corpuscles to detect mechanical stimuli and temperature. This work introduces novel strategy to enhance the performance of battery powered self-powered sensors, with anticipated applications in areas, such as medical health detection and artificial intelligence.

Flexible wearable electronics, including monitors, supercapacitors, sensors and batteries, especially stress or strain sensors, have attracted extensive discussion and attention, due to their distinctive characteristics such as high sensitivity and ultra-flexibility, and their broad application prospects in artificial intelligence (AI), robot sensing interfaces, and also high precision medical instruments. However, a narrower deformation rate, higher latency, and even counterfeit sensitivity severely limit their sensing performance and popularity in practical applications. Herein, a new bifunctional sensor based on excellent conductive and biocompatible porous copper nanowire (CuNW)/IonGel (PCI) composite films introducing a polystyrene (PS) microsphere template is developed. The sensor exhibits unparalleled mechanical properties (the maximum extension rate is 8000%), as well as omnidirectional, arbitrary angle/dimension extension, distortion and bending. This piezo-resistive sensor also features a convincing ultra-high sensitivity (S, 72.1 kPa−1) and gauge factor (Gf, 28.5) with negligible hysteresis under repeated cycle tests. Furthermore, compared to the same type of sensor, the limit of detection (LOD) is drastically reduced (merely 0.14 Pa). Undoubtedly, it is promising for high-resolution strain/stress-sensing electronic skin (e-skin) and green super-stretched electrodes.

This paper presents a hydrogel-based flexible sensor array to detect plantar pressure distribution and recognize the gait patterns to assist those who suffer from gait disorders to rehabilitate better. The traditional pressure detection array is composed of rigid metal sensors, which have poor biocompatibility and expensive manufacturing costs. To solve the above problems, we have designed and fabricated a novel flexible sensor array based on AAM/NaCl (Acrylamide/Sodium chloride) hydrogel and PI (Polyimide) membrane. The proposed array exhibits excellent structural flexibility (209 KPa) and high sensitivity (12.3 mV·N−1), which allows it to be in full contact with the sole of the foot to collect pressure signals accurately. The Wavelet Transform-Random Forest (WT-RF) algorithm is introduced to recognize the gaits based on the plantar pressure signals. Wavelet transform realizes the signal filtering and normalization, and random forest is responsible for the classification of the processed signals. The classification accuracy of the WT-RF algorithm reaches 91.9%, which ensures the precise recognition of gaits. Keywords:plantar pressure detection;gait recognition;flexible hydrogel sensor

Flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors are garnering substantial attention, in line with advancements in biointegrated and wearable electronics. However, a significant portion of piezoresistive pressure sensors suffer from the trade-off between sensitivity and pressure range. Moreover, the current piezoresistive sensors generally rely on a rigid metallic electrode, severely deteriorating their long-term durability. Herein, a fully flexible piezoresistive sensor coupling polyurethane (PU) based electrode and active sensing element is proposed to circumvent the aforementioned problems. By rationally regulating the double-permeable conductive networks within the PU matrix, an elastomeric electrode and sensing element are implemented, respectively. The assembled heterostructured configurations enable impressive sensitivity up to 7.023 kPa–1, broad pressure detection (up to 420 kPa), an ultralow pressure sensing limit (0.1 Pa), and extraordinary operation stability over 80000 cyclic pressings along with fast response/relaxation times (60 ms/80 ms). Additionally, the fully flexible sensor is capable of both real-time detection of physiological signals and mimicking keyboards, implying its viability as a high-performance pressure sensor.

The conformal integration of the electronic skin on the non-developable surface is in great demand for the comprehensive tactile sensing of robotics and prosthetics. However, the current techniques still encounter obstacles in achieving conformal integration of film-like electronic skin on non-developable surfaces with substantial curvatures for contact pressure detection and tactile mapping. In this paper, by utilizing the 3D printing technology to prepare the 3D electrode array in the structural component following its surface curvature, and covering it with a molded functional shell to form the pressure sensitive iontronic interface, a device is proposed to achieve high-sensitive pressure detection and high-fidelity tactile mapping on a complicated non-developable surface, called structural electronic skin (SES). The SES is prepared in a 3D printed fingertip with 46 tactile sensing units distributed on its curved surface, achieving the integration of both structural and tactile functions in a single component. By integrating the smart fingertip into a dexterous hand, a series of demonstrations are presented to show the dead-zone free pressure detection and tactile mapping with high sensitivity, for instance, 2D pulse wave monitoring and robotic injection in a medical robot, object recognition and compliant control in a smart prosthesis.

Flexible, skin-like sensors are capable of converting various external stimuli into measurable electrical signals, crucial for advancing human-computer interaction and wearable health monitoring devices. Previous research on flexible smart sensing elements has primarily targeted single sensing functions, leaving the quest for integrated sensors capable of monitoring multiple signals largely unmet. In this paper, a signal-independent and interference-resistant pressure-temperature dual-mode sensor was fabricated by using a synergistic approach of structure and material design. A temperature-sensitive layer with a high temperature coefficient was prepared by introducing MOF-MXene into PU, and the dual-mode sensor was subsequently obtained by assembling it with S-MXene/PVDF composite as the encapsulating material and the pressure sensing layer. Fabric electrodes have small longitudinal dimensions as well as favorable compressibility and are well suited for the preparation of the miniature integrated sensor. Remarkably, the sensor demonstrates independent high-performance detection of both temperature and pressure signals. In terms of temperature sensing, the device has an average sensitivity of -3.6 %·°C
-1
and a resolution of 0.1 °C, which is better than most sensors based on thermally sensitive semiconductor materials. The sensor has excellent resistance to stress and pressure interference, which is promising for application in the detection of human physiological signals. While pressure sensing, the sensor has excellent overall performance, such as high sensitivity (1.02 kPa
-1
), skin-like rapid response time (40 ms), ultra-high cyclic stability (20,000 cycles). Benefiting from the smaller temperature coefficient of the dielectric composite material, the sensor is insensitive to temperature within the range of 20-50 °C.

With the continuous growth of tomato yields and the need to address the cumbersome task of manual harvesting, the development of harvesting robots presents a promising solution for tomato harvesting. A key challenge lies in improving the success rate of these robots for reliable tomato harvesting without causing damage. This study aims to propose a rigid-flexible coupled gripper to ensure higher success rates in tomato harvesting, while also incorporating an advanced method for detecting fruit ripeness. The paper introduces a flexible hydrogel pressure sensor, featuring a wide detection range, high sensitivity, and excellent stability, integrated into the gripper design. A signal acquisition system based on a sensor array is developed, enabling the accurate capture of force signals during the tomato grasping process. The sensor array collects tactile sequence data in real-time, which, when combined with compressive deformation data from the fruit, forms a comprehensive dataset. To detect tomato ripeness, four classification models—Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), and Fully Convolutional Networks (FCN)—are implemented. Among the four models, the LSTM network achieves the highest classification performance. The overall recognition accuracy for tomatoes of different ripeness levels, within the same variety and at room temperature, is determined to be 99%. The results demonstrate that the combination of a flexible gripper with hydrogel sensors not only preserves the integrity of the tomatoes but also ensures accurate detection of fruit ripeness. This innovation has the potential to significantly enhance the performance of tomato harvesting robots, contributing to more efficient and automated agricultural practices.

Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of L-glutamate and is important for several biological processes . For GDH inhibitor screening, we developed a novel mono-sulfonated tetrazolium salt (EZMTT), which can be synthesized using H 2 O 2 oxidation and purified easily on silica gel in large quantities. The EZMTT detection method showed linear dose responses to NAD(P)H, dehydrogenase concentration and cell numbers. In E. coli GDH assay, the EZMTT method showed excellent assay reproducibility with a Z factor of 0.9 and caused no false positives in the presence of antioxidants (such as BME). Using the EZMTT-formazan-NAD(P)H system, we showed that EGCG is a potent E. coli GDH inhibitor (IC 50 45 nM) and identified that Ebselen , a multifunctional thioredoxin reductase inhibitor, inactivated E. coli GDH (IC 50 213 nM). In cell-based assays at 0.5 mM tetrazolium concentration, EZMTT showed essentially no toxicity after a 3-day incubation, whereas 40% of inhibition was observed for WST-8. In conclusion, EZMTT is a novel tetrazolium salt which provides improved features that are suitable for dehydrogenases and real-time cell-based high-throughput screening (HTS).

Considering the practical applications of capacitive sensors, electrical sensing fibrous membranes should own high mechanical strength, elasticity, sensitivity, thermal diffusivity and biocompatibility, listing the basic design and preparation demands via electrostatic spinning. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fibrous membrane matrix pressure ionic capacitive sensors were prepared via electrostatic spinning. The addition and dissolution of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) particles realized porous structures of PVDF fibrous membrane, providing silver particles (Ag) dependence matrix for conductive Ag-porous PVDF fibrous membrane of electrode layer. The PVDF matrix capacitive sensor was composed of sandwiching dielectric layer of PVDF fibrous membrane with ionic liquid (IL-PVDF) between two electrode layers. The construction of electrical double layers at the interfaces between electrode layer and dielectric layer significantly enhanced capacitance sensing properties. After encapsulating by pure PVDF fibrous membranes, PVDF fibrous membrane matrix ionic capacitive sensor exhibited excellent stability, sensitivity and durability in pressure loading range of 0-8 kPa for 5000 cyclic experiments, which was suitable for real-time detection of multiple physiological bending signals. Based on pressure sensing array construction, the values and distribution of static and dynamic loads were reflected accurately and intuitively, providing feasible methods for practical applications of functional fiber matrix sensors in fields of healthcare and human-machine interaction.

Electronic skin (e-skin) is showing a huge potential in human–computer interaction, intelligent robots, human health, motion monitoring, etc. However, it is still challenging for e-skin to realize distinguishable detection of stretching strain, vertical pressure, and temperature through a simple noncoupling structure design. Here, a stretchable multimodal biomimetic e-skin was fabricated by integrating layer-by-layer self-assembled crumpled reduced graphene oxide/multiwalled carbon nanotubes film on natural rubber (RGO/MWCNTs@NR) as stretchable conductive electrodes and polyacrylamide/NaCl ionogel as a dielectric layer into an ionotropic capacitive mechanoreceptor. Unlike natural skin receptors, the sandwich-like stretchable ionogel mechanoreceptor possessed a distinct ionotropic capacitive behavior for strain and pressure detection. The results showed that the biomimetic e-skin displayed a negative capacitance change with superior stretchability (0–300%) and a high gauge factor of 0.27 in 180–300% strain, while exhibiting a normal positive piezo-capacitance behavior in vertical pressure range of 0–15 kPa with a maximal sensitivity of 1.759 kPa–1. Based on this feature, the biomimetic e-skin showed an excellent synchronous detection capability of planar strain and vertical pressure in practical wearable applications such as gesture recognition and grasping movement detection without a complicated mathematical or signal decoupling process. In addition, the biomimetic e-skin exhibited a quantifiable linear responsiveness to temperature from 20–90 °C with a temperature coefficient of 0.55%/°C. These intriguing properties gave the biomimetic e-skin the ability to perform a complete function similar to natural skin but beyond its performance for future wearable devices and artificial intelligence devices.

Food packaging detection devices have attracted attention to optimize storage situations and reduce food spoilage. However, low-cost and highly sensitive multifunctional sensors for detecting both food freshness and packaging pressure are still lacking. In this study, a multifunctional sensor was developed consisting of a MXene coated alcohol-soluble polyurethane fiber network (MXene/APU) and composite biohydrogel films made of konjac glucomannan, chitosan, and blueberry anthocyanin (KCB). Based on the pressure sensitivity of MXene/APU and the color changes of KCB in response to pH values, the sensor can detect internal package bulging, external squeezing, and food deterioration. The pressure sensor shows a sensitivity of 1.16 kPa–1, a response time of 200 ms, a wide strain range of 1092%, and stability over multiple loops. The pressure sensor could detect human motion and identify surface morphologies. The excellent sensor performance was attributed to the porous structure and large specific surface area of microfiber networks, conductivity of MXene nanosheets, and protective effect of KCB films coated on the conductive membrane. Besides, the microfluidic blow-spinning method used to prepare microfiber networks showed the advantages of low energy consumption and high production efficiency. Based on the color changes of blueberry anthocyanin loaded in KCB films in response to pH, the sensor realized sensitive spoilage detection of food containing protein. This study provides a new multifunctional food packaging sensing device and a greater understanding of the optimization and application of related devices.

Tactile electronic skins with flexibility and good conformability have good application prospects in wearable electronics. However, pseudo-signals are generated when the electronic skin is attached to a curved surface, which affects the pressure detection performance of the electronic skin and limits its application. In this article, we developed a tactile electronic skin that compensates for curved surfaces through in situ curvature sensing and established a pressure, curvature-current model for the compensation of the curvature effect of the electronic skin. The electronic skin can compensate for the measured pressure according to the model and realizes a high-precision sensing capability. It consists of Ag/Ecoflex electrodes, pressure-sensitive materials, and a support layer. The Ag/Ecoflex electrodes with curvature sensing were prepared using screen printing and prestretching. The pressure insensitivity mechanism of the electrodes was analyzed. The effects of curvature on the measurement error of electronic skin were investigated. Experimental results suggest that Ag/Ecoflex electrodes with 80% prestretch have a 21.6/cm−1 curvature sensitivity coefficient and insensitivity to pressure at 0–200 kPa. The measurement errors introduced by curvature can be reduced by compensation. As an application, the skin is attached to the human arm for pressure measurement, through which its great potential is therefore highlighted in curved scenarios such as human prostheses, robots, and flexible airplane skins.
