Preparation and characterization of wormwood-oil-contained microcapsules

Lei Wang,Tingxiao Li,Binjie Xin,Yan Liu,Fuli Zhang

In recent years, wormwood has been successfully applied in various fields, such as flavouring agent, plant dye, insect repellent and medical product. Wormwood oil encapsulated microcapsules with continuous release behaviours would be further applied in the health care textiles. Here, wormwood oil encapsulated microcapsules with different core-wall materials ratios (gelatine: gum arabic: wormwood oil = 1:1:1, 1:1:2, 1:1:3, 1:1:4) were fabricated. The morphology and physicochemical properties of microcapsules were explored by scanning electron microscopy, ultrasonic wave particle size analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis and so on. The size analysis results indicated that the microcapsule diameter could be controlled less than 1 um. In vitro testing showed that the microcapsules were capable of extending the releasing period to over 6 days. The thermo gravimetric analysis proved that microcapsules had superior thermal stability compared with pure wormwood oil, showing broad application prospects in functional health care textile.

Silk fibroin/polydopamine modified nanocapsules for high-performance adhesion

Zuobing Xiao,Huiqin Liu,Qixuan Zhao,Yunwei Niu,Di Zhao

In nature, aquatic organisms such as barnacles ( Cirripedia SPP. ) and mussels ( Mytilus SPP. ) exhibit extraordinary underwater adhesion. Based on this, in this paper, silk fibroin (SF) and dopamine (DA) were mixed in an aqueous solution to obtain silk fibroin/polydopamine (SF-PDA) complex, and SiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel method. Then SiO 2 grafted SF-PDA was used as the wall material and carvacrol as the core material to obtain spherical structured nanocapsules (SSPM) with an average particle size of 332.60 nm. SF-PDA can generate double dynamic bonds (metal Fe 3+ coordination bond and hydrogen bond), which can improve the crosslinking density of SSPM with silk. The results showed that the residual rate of carvacrol in silk treated with SSPM and FeCl 3 solution was about 19.20% after 15 times washing cycles, while the residual rate of pure carvacrol-treated silk was only 0.42% at 10 times washing cycles, indicating that the nanocapsule has good washing durability. In vitro biocompatibility assessment of human skin cells confirmed that the cells were safe and non-toxic after 24 h exposure to treated silk. The handle test shows that the treated silk hardly affects the original touch and improves the added value of the silk. SF is extracted from silk waste, which reduces environmental pollution and contributes to the sustainable development of industry. Double dynamic bonding provides a simple and green strategy for the preparation of nanocomposites with potential applications in functional textiles , medical textiles, advanced functional materials , etc.

Bioinspired Polydopamine Modification for Interface Compatibility of PDMS-Based Responsive Structurally Colored Textiles

Yu Zheng,Guizhen Lin,Weixian Zhou,Luyao Wei,Jie Liu,Shenglong Shang,Ping Zhu

Textiles that can repeatedly change color in the presence of external stimuli have attracted great interest. Effectively designing to produce such functional textiles is essential, yet there remain challenges like producing stable coloration, rapid response, and reverse color changing. Here, the preparation of a magnetic field response (MFR) textile with a fast magnetic field response, brilliant structural coloration, and mechanical robustness is reported. The MFR textile is knitted by incorporating magnetic particles’ ethylene glycol (EG) suspension within polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based fibers. A surface modification strategy is designed to prevent EG from seeping out along the PDMS polymer chains. A PDMS fiber is encapsulated in waterborne polyurethane, and a polydopamine joint layer is used. The MFR textile demonstrates magnetic field-triggered structural colors, and the breaking strength and elongation at break of each composite fiber are improved. In addition, multishaped patterns can be printed on the MFR textile with the help of the photo etching technology, which enhances the applications of the new functional textiles.

Yingying Yang,Zengpei Guo,Wei Huang,Shiyu Zhang,Jingjing Huang,Hongjun Yang,Yingshan Zhou,Weilin Xu,Shaojin Gu

Facile construction of multifunctional fabrics with durability still remains a challenge in the past decade. In this work, we report a facile fabrication of non-fluorinated superhydrophobic and antibacterial cotton fabric surfaces via in situ growing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocrystals on cotton fibers under room temperature condition and subsequently coating with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The surface morphology and chemical composition of treated fabric have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The as-prepared cotton fabric showed superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle (WCA) of 151.36° and a sliding angle of 3.6° and excellent antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus. The durability of the superhydrophobic and antibacterial fabrics was evaluated by repeated washing and abrasion cycles. The as-prepared fabrics retained their excellent antibacterial property and superhydrophobicity after 300 cycles of abrasion and 5 cycles of washing. The robustness of superhydrophobicity and antibacterial activity made this method has wild application prospects in biomedical field in the future.

Highly elastic phase change fibers for wearable solar-thermal regulation textiles

Keyan Sun,Fanmu Meng,Nan Sheng,Chunyu Zhu

Applying phase change materials (PCMs) with huge thermal energy storage capacity and temperature control ability as the function medium of solar-thermal regulation textiles is of great value for the thermal management in cold environment, while hindered by the leakage, rigidity and poor light absorption. Therefore, we propose a novel highly elastic phase change fiber (PCF) synthesized by the facile wet spinning method in this work. In this system, the eicosane microencapsulation replaces the traditional PCMs as the thermal energy storage medium, originally solving the leakage problem. Meanwhile, choosing thermoplastic polyurethane with multiwalled carbon nanotube inserted as the fiber carrier endows the whole system excellent mechanical strength and light absorption ability. Hence, the finally obtained PCF exhibits outstanding mechanical elasticity, thermal energy storage capacity and solar-thermal conversion ability. The elongation can reach about 380 % with tensile strength of 0.85 MPa, fully satisfying the requirements for weaving to various shapes. The phase change enthalpy is 113.3 J/g with relative stability even after 200 thermal cycles and 24 h washing test, indicating the potential for long-time application and daily protection need. Moreover, the solar-thermal conversion efficiency was measured to be 93.1 % under the irradiation power of 200 mW/cm 2 , proving the excellent solar-thermal conversion ability. In summary, this work provides a sample and accessible method for synthesizing the highly elastic PCF with great solar-thermal conversion and storage ability, which is beneficial for the design and development of functional thermoregulation textiles with solar energy utilization in the cold environment.

Preparation and research of waterborne polyurethane phase change material 2

Wei Hong,Jielin Wang,Qingshan Li,Heng Zhang,Guangzhong Xing

In this paper, the researcher first designed molecular structure of water-soluble polyurethane phase change material. Then, by taking HDI, PEG, chain extender (DMPA, BDO, EDA), catalyst (DBTDL) and neutralizing agent (TEA) as the main raw material, the author prepared waterborne polyurethane phase change material (WPUPC), which is available for wet spinning. The orthogonal design determined the optimal ratio of raw materials, namely, DMPA content is 7 wt%, R equals 6, emulsifying temperature is 30°C, the reaction temperature is 60°C and the reaction time is 180 min. What's more, WPUPCM was characterized utilizing FTIR, DSC-TG and TG-FTIR. A series of tests indicated that this experiment successfully prepared WPUPCM, which has the following advantages: reversible phase change process, high thermal stability, excellent thermal cycling stability, safety and environmental protection. It is foreseeable that this material has broad application prospects in the field of functional textiles.

A Janus Textile Capable of Radiative Subambient Cooling and Warming for Multi-Scenario Personal Thermal Management

Keqiao Li,Meng Li,Chongjia Lin,Gongze Liu,Yang Li,Baoling Huang

Textiles with radiative cooling/warming capabilities provide a green and effective solution to personal thermal comfort in different climate scenarios. However, developing multiple-mode textiles for wearing in changing climates with large temperature variation remains a challenge. Here a Janus textile is reported, comprising a polyethersulfone (PES)-Al 2 O 3 cooling layer optically coupled with a Ti 3 C 2 T x warming layer, which can realize sub-ambient radiative cooling, solar warming, and active Joule heating. Owing to the intrinsically high refractive index of PES and the rational design of the fiber topology, the nanocomposite PES textile features a record high solar reflectance of 0.97. Accompanied by an infrared (IR) emittance of 0.91 in the atmospheric window, sub-ambient cooling of 0.5–2.5 °C is achieved near noontime in humid summer under ≈1000 W m −2 solar irradiation in Hong Kong. The simulated skin covered with the textile is ≈10 °C cooler than that with white cotton. The Ti 3 C 2 T x layer provides a high solar-thermal efficiency of ≈80% and a Joule heating flux of 66 W m −2 at 2 V and 15 °C due to its excellent spectral selectivity and electrical conductivity. The switchable multiple working modes enable effective and adaptive personal thermal management in changing environments.

Air-permeable and flexible multifunctional cellulose-based textiles for bio-protection, thermal heating conversion, and electromagnetic interference shielding

Zhaochuan Yu,Chao Deng,Farzad Seidi,Qiang Yong,Zhichao Lou,Liucheng Meng,Jiawei Liu,Chen Huang,Yuqian Liu,Weibing Wu,Jingquan Han,Huining Xiao

Air-permeable and flexible multifunctional textiles are highly desired for wearable electronics and portable device applications. However, fabricating textiles with novel multifunctionalities while maintaining their inherent porous and flexible characteristics still remains a challenge. Herein, a range of organic–inorganic hybrid materials were prepared via a surface engineering approach in an attempt to create air-permeable and flexible multifunctional cellulose-based textiles with superb bactericidal activities, thermal heating conversion, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performances. A highly conductive MXene was decorated onto polydopamine (PDA) modified cellulose nonwovens, followed by in situ polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The resultant PGMA facilitated the covalent grafting of disinfecting agents and also protected the MXene from oxidation. The disinfecting agents, i.e., neomycin sulfate or guanidine-based polymer, made the textiles highly biocidal. The smart textile possesses an excellent bactericidal efficacy of >99.99% against both E. coli and S. aureus, exceptional heating performance (dual-driven energy conversion, fast thermal response, and a wide temperature range), and an outstanding EMI shielding efficiency of 38.6 dB in the X-band, while maintaining the satisfactory porosity and flexibility of green-based nonwovens. Evidently, such wearable multifunctional textiles are extremely promising for applications in bio-protection, thermal management, and EMI shielding, and are ideal candidates for future intelligent garments and healthcare devices.

A large-area versatile textile for radiative warming and biomechanical energy harvesting

Yi Zhang,Yang Li,Keqiao Li,Ye Seul Kwon,Thilhara Tennakoon,Cunteng Wang,Ka Chung Chan,Sau-Chung Fu,Baoling Huang,Christopher Y.H. Chao

Both thermal management and electricity generation are becoming two basic functions for next-generation clothing integrated with wearable electronics . However, such versatile textiles with a simple design and great comfort have been rarely reported. Here, we propose a tri-layer textile that not only realizes solar and passive radiative warming but also harvests biomechanical energy to generate electricity. The textile is achieved by assembling photothermal nanoparticles on an infrared-reflective and conductive fabric with a tribo-negative polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanofiber membrane on the backside. The textile offers both a minimal thermal emissivity (down to 11.0%) and a maximum solar absorptivity (up to 83.7%), effectively suppressing radiation heat loss and boosting the harvested solar-thermal energy. Wearing such a textile enables a 3 °C drop of the indoor heating setpoint compared to a cotton textile, saving 25.2–100% of building energy consumption in ten cities worldwide. Moreover, the textile can serve as a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator . Remarkably high outputs (150–352 V, 7.5–27.8 μA) can be attained upon hand touching with different forces (14.7–44.0 N) and frequencies (0.9–3.9 Hz), which can power 41 LEDs. This textile opens a promising direction on how to develop a multifunctional energy-saving and electricity-generation textile while keeping thermal comfort for wearers.

Asymmetric Superhydrophobic Textiles for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding, Photothermal Conversion, and Solar Water Evaporation

En Li,Yamin Pan,Chunfeng Wang,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen,Caofeng Pan,Xianhu Liu

Flexible and multifunctional textiles have potential applications in self-cleaning and portable electronic product applications, but the current problem that needs to be solved is to maintain their inherent breathability and flexibility while expanding other functional applications. Herein, we adopt the layer-by-layer assembly method to develop a multifunctional textile with superior asymmetric superhydrophobicity, excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, outstanding photothermal conversion, and solar water evaporation. The synergistic effect of SiO2 nanoparticles/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES) endows the textile with a water contact angle of 160°. MXene provides high conductivity (1200 S/m) and EMI shielding effects (36 dB) for multifunctional textiles. In addition, the multifunctional textile exhibits excellent photothermal conversion, and satisfactory solar water evaporation efficiency (80%) and rate (1.22 kg/(m2 h)) under 1 sun. Therefore, the prepared multifunctional textile has great potential in multiscene applications.

Nickel-ion-mediated assembly of antioxidant MXene@Caffeic acid on carboxyl-aminated cotton fabric for multifunctional wearable textiles

Diwen Jiang,Guoliang Liu,Haowen Zhang,Zhesheng Feng,Fanbin Meng,Yan Wang

Despite the potential of MXene-based textiles for wearable devices, their oxidative instability and weak interfacial adhesion hinder practical applications. In this study, a nickel-ion-assisted MXene@caffeic acid (MXene@CA, MC) composite dispersion was deposited onto carboxyl-aminated cotton fabric (CPCF) via dip-coating to fabricate a multifunctional composite textile (CPCF-Ni-MC). The presence of CA limits the oxidative degradation of MXene, ensuring the surface chemical activity of the MXene nanosheets. The nickel ions enhance the stability and quantity of the deposited dispersion on the fabric through covalent bonds and electrostatic interactions. The CPCF-Ni-MC composite fabric not only retains the original fabric’s excellent breathability, moisture permeability, washability, and flexibility but also exhibits superior electrical conductivity (289.18 S cm −1 ) and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (66.8 dB). Furthermore, its rapid joule heating (reaching 112.1 °C within 49 s at 3.5 V) and ultralow infrared emissivity (0.21) enable adaptive thermal management. Additionally, the textile demonstrates exceptional environmental resistance with hydrophobic, flame-retardant properties, and UV-blocking capability (transmission rates <0.01 in the UVA and UVB regions). By achieving these diverse functionalities within a single textile through a low-cost and scalable manufacturing approach, CPCF-Ni-MC presents novel perspectives and strategies for the preparation of stable integrated multifunctional wearable devices.

Bilayer Smart and Multifunctional Camouflage Textiles Integrating Adaptive Visible Stealth, Infrared Concealment, and Electromagnetic Interference Shielding

Yao Pan,Xiangning Hu,Changhuai Ye,Meifang Zhu

Modern military operations demand advanced materials capable of adaptive multispectral camouflage and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding to ensure survivability in dynamic environments. Herein, we present a bilayer smart and multifunctional camouflage textile (BSCT) that integrates thermochromic cellulose aerogel fibers (TC-CAFs) with a carbon fiber felt to achieve adaptive visible and infrared camouflage. The TC-CAFs incorporate thermochromic microcapsules and iron(III) oxide nanoparticles, enabling rapid color transitions (6–12 s) above 35 °C for dynamic visible camouflage, while their nanoporous structure ensures low thermal conductivity (0.0327 W/m·K), providing effective infrared stealth. With a tensile strength of 7.09 MPa at a porosity exceeding 90%, the TC-CAFs maintain structural integrity for weaving into flexible fabrics. The carbon fiber layer functions as a Joule heater for on-demand thermochromic activation under low voltages of <6 V and provides exceptional EMI shielding effectiveness (>48 dB in 8.2–18.0 GHz), attenuating 99.998% of incident waves. By synergizing dynamic visible camouflage, thermal infrared stealth, and EMI shielding within a flexible, breathable textile, this work offers a transformative solution for next-generation protective gear in modern warfare scenarios.
