Synthesis of Jet Fuel Range Cycloalkanes with Cyclopentanone and Furfural

Qiang Liu,Xinghua Zhang,Qi Zhang,Qiying Liu,Chenguang Wang,Longlong Ma

In this work, high-density jet fuel range cycloalkanes were synthesized in high yields (∼80%) by solvent-free aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and furfural followed by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). Sodium-promoted magnesium–aluminum mixed oxides (Na–MgAlO) exhibited a high catalytic activity in the aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and furfural under a solvent-free condition. Furfural conversion of 99.4% with almost 100% selectivity for 2-(2-furylmethylidene) cyclopentanone and 2,5-bis(2-furylmethylidene) cyclopentanone were obtained over the 5.7%Na–MgAlO catalyst under mild conditions (80 °C, 2 h). The Na–MgAlO catalysts were characterized by multiple technologies, such as N2 physisorption, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption, and so on. It was found that the high catalytic activity for aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and furfural was clearly related to the amount and strength of basicity of Na–MgAlO catalysts. Finally, the condensation products were converted to jet fuel range cycloalkanes by HDO over Pd/C and HZSM-5 catalysts. The density, heating value, and freezing point of the HDO liquid products were 0.83 g/cm3, 43.1 MJ/Kg, and −27.7 °C, respectively. The results suggest that these cycloalkanes are promising as blending components for jet fuel.

Phase Transformation-Tailored In-Plane Sulfur Vacancies in MoS2 for Enhanced Hydrodeoxygenation Performance

Linjie Guan,Qicheng Zhang,Mingjun Cen,Bin Chen,Wenchao Peng,Yang Li,Danyun Xu,Xiaobin Fan

MoS2-based catalysts can effectively achieve the hydrodeoxygenation of lipids or fatty acids into biojet fuel, alleviating the energy crisis and environmental problems. Nevertheless, the active sites of MoS2 are predominantly concentrated at the edges or rims, while the more extensive inert plane is deficient in effective catalytic sites. In this study, based on a phase transformation strategy, sulfur atoms in the inert plane are activated through annealing 1T MoS2, generating 2H MoS2 with abundant in-plane sulfur vacancies. Specifically, MoS2(U)-400 achieves 100% conversion of palmitic acid and over 99% hexadecane yield at 2 MPa H2 and 260 °C. This phase transformation-induced active site construction strategy provides a simple and effective catalyst for the hydrodeoxygenation of lipids and fatty acids.

Hydrodeoxygenation and hydrodesulfurization over Fe promoted Ni2P/SBA-15 catalyst

Bolong Jiang,Tianhan Zhu,Hua Song,Feng Li

The Fe-doped Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 was prepared by the temperature programmed reduction method at a relative low temperature of 673 K. The effect of Fe on the catalytic performance for benzofuran (BF) hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) hydrodesulfurization (HDS) were investigated. The catalysts were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) and CO uptakes. The results indicate the incorporation of Fe into SBA-15 contributes to the exposure of smaller Ni 2 P particles (5.6 nm) with an uniform dispersion, along with enhancement of weak and medium acid strengths . Compared with Ni 2 P/SBA-15, the Fe-doped Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 exhibited a much higher BF conversion of 91.7% with an improved total deoxygenated product yield of 83.3%. The excellent HDO performance of Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 can be ascribed to the exposure of highly-dispersed smaller Ni 2 P particles. Meanwhile, the improved dehydration of 2-EtPh to EB and the high deoxygenated product selectivity can be attributed to the enhanced acidity. As compared to the Ni 2 P/SBA-15, the Fe-doped Ni 2 P/Fe-SBA-15 showed a higher DBT HDS activity of 96.3% with the BP formation at a great proportion of 90.3%, indicating that DBT was mainly transformed through the desulfurization pathway during HDS.

One-step hydrodeoxygenation of palm oil to isomerized hydrocarbon fuels over Ni supported on nano-sized SAPO-11 catalysts

Qiying Liu,Hualiang Zuo,Tiejun Wang,Longlong Ma,Qi Zhang

Nano-sized SAPO-11s were hydrothermally synthesized with using di-n-propylamine (DPA) as structure-directing agent in mixed n-tetradecanoamine–n-propanol–H 2 O medium and the Ni/SAPO-11 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The catalysts was characterized by XRD, SEM, BET, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD and TG techniques and their catalytic performance was tested in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of palm oil to hydrocarbon fuels. Surfactant n-tetradecanoamine could mediate the minimum SAPO-11 sizes into 20–50   nm. As comparing to the commercial SAPO-11, the nano-sized SAPO-11s presented significantly enlarged surfaces and mesoporous volumes, which offered sufficient space and strong interactions for dispersing Ni. One-step HDO of palm oil demonstrated that the nano-sized SAPO-1 supported Ni catalysts showed the high yield (80%) of liquid hydrocarbons, high isomerization selectivity (80%) and excellent stability due to that the catalyst presented appropriate acidity, higher Ni dispersity, balance of metal (Ni) and acid (SAPO-11) functionalities and fast diffusion for bulky palm oil and products. These promotion effects observed over the nano-sized SAPO-11 supported Ni catalysts indicated the potential application in biorefinery of vegetable oils to hydrocarbon fuels.

Calcination temperature induced structural change of red mud and its enhanced catalytic performance for hydrocarbon-based biofuels production

Qi Wang,Jinlei Chen,Xingyong Li,Xinyu Yang,Yankun Wu,Shuirong Li,Yueyuan Ye,Duo Wang,Dechao Wang,Zhifeng Zheng

Red mud (RM) is a strongly solid waste from alumina production, and the disposal of RM leads to series of environmental problems such as alkalization of occupied land and pollution of nearby water systems. Using RM as catalyst or carrier is one of the important methods for the comprehensive utilization of RM. Herein, the application of Ni supported RM (Ni/RM) for the efficient hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of waste oils to produce hydrocarbon-based biofuels is reported. The structural properties of Ni/RM catalysts were investigated. The catalytic performance for HDO of palmitic acid as the model compound was evaluated. The results showed that RM calcinated at low temperature (400–600 °C) has a larger specific surface area and well dispersion of Ni, while the high calcination temperature (700 °C ~ 900 °C) results in sintering of metal oxides and lower dispersion of Ni. Ni/RM-500 shows the largest specific surface area of 77 m 2 /g. The conversion of palmitic acid over Ni/RM-500 is 100% at 250 °C, and alkanes are the only products at 300 °C. The reaction path of HDO and DCO/DCO 2 is related to reaction temperature. The Ni/RM-500 shows the feasibility to different feedstocks. Finally, the catalytic performance of Ni/RM-500 was tested for 135 h, and the main reason causing the deactivation of Ni/RM-500 was revealed.

Synthesis of Diesel and Jet Fuel Range Cycloalkanes with Cyclopentanone and Furfural

Wei Wang,Shaoying Sun,Fengan Han,Guangyi Li,Xianzhao Shao,Ning Li

Diesel and jet fuel range cycloalkanes were obtained in ~84.8% overall carbon yield with cyclopentanone and furfural, which can be produced from hemicellulose. Firstly, 2,5-bis(furan-2-ylmethyl)-cyclopentanone was prepared by the aldol condensation/hydrogenation reaction of cyclopentanone and furfural under solid base and selective hydrogenation catalyst. Over the optimized catalyst (Pd/C-CaO), 98.5% carbon yield of 2,5-bis(furan-2-ylmethyl)-cyclopentanone was acquired at 423 K. Subsequently, the 2,5-bis(furan-2-ylmethyl)-cyclopentanone was further hydrodeoxygenated over the M/H-ZSM-5(Pd, Pt and Ru) catalyst. Overall, 86.1% carbon yield of diesel and jet fuel range cycloalkanes was gained over the Pd/H-ZSM-5 catalyst under solvent-free conditions. The cycloalkane mixture obtained in this work has a high density (0.82 g mL−1) and a low freezing point (241.7 K). Therefore, it can be mixed into diesel and jet fuel to increase their volumetric heat values or payloads. Keywords:high density fuel;cyclopentanone;furfural;aldol condensation;hydrodeoxygenation

Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol to Cyclohexanol over Bimetallic NiMo-MOF-Derived Catalysts

Minghao Zhou,Fei Ge,Jing Li,Haihong Xia,Junli Liu,Jianchun Jiang,Changzhou Chen,Jun Zhao,Xiaohui Yang

Lignin is an attractive renewable source of aromatics with a low effective hydrogen to carbon ratio (H/Ceff). The catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived model compounds is a key strategy for lignin upgrading. In this work, the HDO of guaiacol, a typical lignin-derived compound, was carried out over metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived Ni-based catalysts. A monometallic Ni-MOF catalyst and different ratios of bimetallic NiMo-MOF catalysts were synthesized by a hydrothermal process, followed by a carbonization process. Among these catalysts, Ni3Mo1@C exhibited an excellent catalytic performance, affording a guaiacol conversion of 98.8% and a cyclohexanol selectivity of 66.8% at 240 °C and 2 MPa H2for 4 h. The addition of Mo decreased the particle size of the spherical structure and improved the dispersion of metal particles. The synergistic effect between Ni and Mo was confirmed by various means, including ICP, XRD, SEM, TEM, and NH3-TPD analyses. In addition, the effect of the reaction temperature, time, and H2pressure during the HDO process is discussed in detail.Keywords:guaiacol;hydrodeoxygenation;Ni-based bimetallic catalysts;MOF

Enhanced Isomerization Performance of Unsupported Ni–Nb–O Catalyst for One-Step Hydrogenation of Jatropha Oil to Alkanes

Changlong Yin,Yihang Han,Lingtong Meng,Yongqiang Guo,Yu Yan,Dong Liu,Huiji Zhao,Yongming Chai,Chenguang Liu

Biolipids and oil hydrogenation are prominent alternatives to petroleum-based fuels. Currently, the catalysts used are limited to deoxidation activity, resulting in the reaction products with a high content of n-alkanes and waxes, necessitating secondary treatment to increase iso-alkane content. Herein, an unsupported Ni–Nb–O catalyst with trifunctional capabilities (i.e., hydrodeoxygenation, hydrocracking, and isomerization) was developed for the efficient conversion of methyl stearate and jatropha oil into small molecular alkanes. The metal ratio significantly affects the catalytic performance, in which Ni/Nb = 2:0.6 exhibited the highest isomerization activity. Moreover, 84% of the deoxidized products are C8–C17 hydrocarbons, with 53.4% being isomeric hydrocarbons. The catalyst also demonstrated excellent stability, maintaining 54% selectivity for C8–C17 iso-alkanes in jatropha oil feedstock during 240 h of operation.

Controlled Hydrodeoxygenation of Phenolic Components in Pyrolysis Bio-oil to Arenes

Guangce Jiang,Yinghui Hu,Guoqiang Xu,Xindong Mu,Huizhou Liu

Hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic components in pyrolysis bio-oil is considered to be a potential strategy for producing renewable aromatic chemicals. The key issue of this process is the establishment of an effective catalytic system that can cleave the CAr–O bonds without affecting the aromatic structure. To achieve this goal, an efficient heterogeneous catalyst with solid acid support (WOx/ZrO2) and active metal (Ru) was prepared in this study. The Ru–WOx/ZrO2 catalyst can effectively convert model phenolic compounds into aromatic hydrocarbons. For a mixed phenolic sample, the conversion to and selectivity for arenes were all around 90%. The good selectivity was proved to be strongly related to the surface adsorption and acid properties of the catalyst as well as the reaction pathway. Moreover, the hydrodeoxygenation of a pretreated bio-oil was also conducted and presented a satisfactory yield of arenes at 240 °C with 1 MPa of H2 reacted for 5 h. The depolymerization of high-molecular-weight phenolic oligomers was found to be significant during the catalytic process, which further enhanced the yield of aromatic monomers.

Improved Hydrodeoxygenation of Phenol to Cyclohexane on NiFe Alloy Catalysts Derived from Phyllosilicates

Qiao Han,Hui Wang,Mooeez Ur Rehman,Xin Shang,Haijun Chen,Na Ji,Xinli Tong,Hui Shi,Yujun Zhao

Graphical A phyllosilicate-derived NiFe/SiO 2 catalyst with both metallic Ni and NiFe alloy active sites prepared by ammonia-evaporation method shows excellent intrinsic activity in the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol to cyclohexane. A phyllosilicate-derived NiFe/SiO 2 catalyst (NiFe/SiO 2 −AE) was successfully prepared by the ammonia evaporation method and applied in the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol to cyclohexane. Another two catalysts were also prepared for a comparison by impregnation (NiFe/SiO 2 −IM) and deposition-precipitation (NiFe/SiO 2 −DP) methods, respectively. It was found that Ni−Fe alloy, the active sites for the hydrogenolysis of C−O bond, can be obtained by the reduction of NiFe 2 O 4 (IM) or phyllosilicate (DP and AE) by H 2 . The AE strategy can generate more phyllosilicate structure, which improves the dispersion of both Ni−Fe alloy and metallic Ni sites and allows the formation of more interface between these two kinds of sites as well. Therefore, the NiFe/SiO 2 −AE exhibits a significantly high catalytic performance in the HDO of phenol to cyclohexane. Moreover, the turnover frequency of Ni−Fe alloy sites over NiFe/SiO 2 −AE catalysts is much higher than those of other two catalysts. It is suggested that the enhanced synergy between the two kinds of active sites in the adsorption of C−O groups and hydrogen molecules ensures the superior intrinsic activity in HDO process.

Construction of a highly active and water-resistant Ni-based catalyst for the HDO reaction of phenol

Shuai Wang,Yanxiu Liu,Mei Zhang,Feng Li,Yanguang Chen,Hua Song

Aqueous-phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass-derived phenolic compounds is considered as one of the most promising ways to convert biomass into fuels and value-added chemicals. The aim of this study is to develop highly active and water-resistant catalysts with a low price. For this purpose, with cheap transition Ni as the active phase, supported Ni@C/MxOy(x) and Ni@C/Al2O3(5)-glucose catalysts (MxOy stands for ZrO2, CeO2, TiO2 or Al2O3 and x represents Ni loading) were prepared from Ni-MOF-74/MxOy (x). The prepared catalysts were characterized by TG, H2-TPR, XRD, BET, HRTEM, XPS and NH3-TPD. The effect of the support, Ni loading and glucose incorporation on the HDO performance of phenol was investigated. The results showed that the Ni@C/Al2O3(5) catalyst with Al2O3 as the support and a low Ni loading of 5% exhibited the best HDO activity. The superior performance with such a low Ni loading greatly reduced the cost of the catalysts. Furthermore, the total yield of the deoxygenated product over Ni@C/Al2O3(5) was increased by 22.3% after the incorporation of glucose when the molar ratio of phenol/water was 1 : 1.25. In addition, the fixed-bed reactor experiment revealed that the HDO performance of Ni@C/Al2O3(5)-glucose almost remained stable during 48 h on-stream operation, indicating its excellent stability.

Highly efficient unsupported Co-doped nano-MoS2 catalysts for p-cresol hydrodeoxygenation

Jing Cao,An Li,Yicen Zhang,Linchao Mu,Xi Huang,Yankun Li,Tao Yang,Cen Zhang,Congshan Zhou

To prepare catalyst with high activity, high selectivity and good stability remains the biggest challenge in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenols by adopting MoS 2 -based sulfides as catalysts. Herein, we report a simple hydrothermal method to synthesize highly-dispersed nano-MoS 2 with abundant defects and some curved slabs. All these advantages enable nano-MoS 2 to provide a large number of coordination unsaturated sites to anchor Co atoms. The unsupported Co-doped catalyst with an optimal Co/(Co + Mo) molar ratio of 0.3 exhibited excellent performance in the HDO of p -cresol with conversion of 98.7 % and toluene selectivity of 98.9 % at 220 °C. Moreover, the optimized Co/MoS 2 -0.3 catalyst had a good stability after reaction of 72 h. The excellent HDO performance was attributed to the formation of abundant Co-Mo-S active sites which optimize the electrical structure of nano-MoS 2 by Co promoter.
