Dynamic control of fluorescence to meet the evolving demands of optoelectronic devices is garnering significant attention. Current strategies primarily focus on altering the chemical environment of the luminescent centers using external substances, such as quenchers, without considering modifications to the fluorescent groups themselves for luminescence control. In this work, we investigate a novel electro-quenching device that incorporates europium (Eu 3+ ) complexes into a polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix. The Eu 3+ complexes, consisting of the central ion Eu 3+ and organic conjugate molecules, can be induced into a polarized state within the PEO matrix under an applied electric field, causing a relative displacement between the Eu 3+ ions and the organic ligands. This displacement disrupts the ligand-mediated sensitization process, leading to a reduction in fluorescence intensity, a phenomenon we term polarization quenching. Notably, upon the removal of the electric field, the relative displacement between Eu 3+ and the ligands is reversed due to depolarization, enabling the device to autonomously recover its sensitized luminescence. The process exhibits a repetitive nature. This study presents an innovative method for the dynamic regulation of fluorescence through the migration of Eu 3+ luminescent centers, highlighting substantial potential for the modulation of light emission from lanthanide metal complexes via external fields. Specifically, the visualization and retrieval of optical information can be achieved through the application and subsequent removal of an external electric field, thereby facilitating its utilization in prospective photoelectric data storage media.

Strong adhesives as structural load-bearing materials can provide both adhesive bonding to substrate surfaces and cohesive bonding throughout the bulk material, which are widely used in the cement nail, electronic device, and automotive industries. By a molecular topological regulation, in this work, we developed a series of strong adhesives based on comb-like polymers. By systematically regulating the topological parameters including the side chain length, the spacer between side chains, and the degree of polymerization of the overall backbone, comprehensive studies on linear rheology (the terminal relaxation time and zero viscosity) and non-linear debonding adhesion (the work of adhesion) are performed on these comb-like polymers. It was found that the rheological behaviors depend not only on the structure parameters but also on whether or not the samples exhibit phase separation. Moreover, regardless of the topological structure of comb-like polymers with strong and weak phase separation, the universal work of adhesion is observed to be dependent on the multiplication of terminal relaxation time and the debonding rate, indicating dynamic control over the nonlinear work of adhesion. Furthermore, comb-like polymers are feasible to bind with diverse substrates, including glass, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate, wood, and metal. In comparison to existing works using dynamic physical or chemical bonds, molecular topology regulation is more easily fulfilled in strong adhesives without the use of additives and complicated chemical and physical modifications, lowering the barrier for practical applications.

Photo-thermal conversion and energy storage using phase change materials are now being applied in industrial processes and technologies, particularly for electronics and thermal systems. This method relies on adding high thermal conductivity fillers, such as nanoparticles, to enhance the phase change process. In the long term, dynamic tuning heat transfer provides a superior means of tuning control the heat transfer efficiency and speed. In this study, a nanofluid phase change material was prepared by adding magnetic nanoparticles, effectively combining the properties of high thermal conductivity and magnetism, in an attempt to develop a magnetically enhanced approach for dynamic tuning of photo-thermal conversion charging. Our results showed that the phase change efficiency of magnetic phase change material can be improved by magnetic field application. With the increasing magnetic strength, the photo-thermal storage efficiency was enhanced, and storage capacity was improved by more than 48%. Meanwhile the steady temperature of the magnetic phase change material increased, enhancing the open-circuit voltage in photo-thermoelectricity experiments. Thus, the proposed method demonstrated in this study achieved superior phase change heat transfer characteristics within a photo-thermal conversion process by dynamically controlling the magnetic field distribution, which should be especially useful for direct solar energy utilisation.

Pinene is a plant volatile monoterpenoid which is used in the fragrance, pesticide, and biofuel industries. Although α-pinene has been synthesized in microbial cell factories, the low synthesis efficiency has thus far limited its production. In this study, the cell growth and α-pinene production of the engineered yeast were decoupled by a dynamic regulation strategy, resulting in a 101.1-fold increase in α-pinene production compared to the control. By enhancing the mevalonate pathway and expanding the cytosolic acetyl-CoA pool, α-pinene production was further increased. Overexpression of the transporter Sge1 resulted in a redistribution of global gene transcription, leading to an increased flux of α-pinene synthesis. By optimizing the aeration flow rate in 3-L bioreactors, the α-pinene production reached 1.8 g/L, which is the highest reported α-pinene production in cell factories. Our research provides insights and fundamentals for the efficient synthesis of monoterpenoids in microbial cell factories.

The delayed healing of infected wounds can be attributed to the increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and consequent damages to vascellum and tissue, resulting in a hypoxic wound environment that further exacerbates inflammation. Current clinical treatments including hyperbaric oxygen therapy and antibiotic treatment fail to provide sustained oxygenation and drug-free resistance to infection. To propose a dynamic oxygen regulation strategy, this study develops a composite hydrogel with ROS-scavenging system and oxygen-releasing microspheres in the wound dressing. The hydrogel itself reduces cellular damage by removing ROS derived from immune cells. Simultaneously, the sustained release of oxygen from microspheres improves cell survival and migration in hypoxic environments, promoting angiogenesis and collagen regeneration. The combination of ROS scavenging and oxygenation enables the wound dressing to achieve drug-free anti-infection through activating immune modulation, inhibiting the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6, and promoting tissue regeneration in both acute and infected wounds of rat skins. Thus, the composite hydrogel dressing proposed in this work shows great potential for dynamic redox regulation of infected wounds and accelerates wound healing without drugs.

Achieving dynamic control over stereostructures and electronic properties of rigid molecules remains a significant challenge due to the delicate balance between stability and flexibility. Here, the construction of butterfly-shaped molecular junctions stabilized by moderate-strength boron-nitrogen (B←N) coordination between boraacenes and pyridines is reported. By leveraging the pivot-like flexibility of B←N bonds, molecular conductance switching with on/off ratios exceeding 100 is achieved through force-driven dynamic transitions between distinct stacking conformations. Single-molecule electrical measurements combined with first-principle calculations identify distinct charge transport mechanisms—through-space and through-bond—associated with the butterfly-wing open and closed configurations. Furthermore, external factors like electric fields and substituent effects modulate π – π interactions and charge transport properties. The introduction of destructive quantum interference effects can be achieved by replacing molecular units. The findings demonstrate that B←N coordination serves as a dynamically tunable linkage, offering a pathway to design molecular platforms with multifunctional units, customized stereo-conformations, and quantum effects.

Plasmonic vortices (PV) stimulated from metallic micro-nano structures hold great promise for improving on-chip data capacity. However, the manipulation freedom degree and reconfigurability of current PV devices still need further development in the terahertz regime, especially the simultaneous excitation of two or more PV modes and their coherent synthesis. In this letter, a terahertz PV interferometer with spatiotemporal coding based on liquid crystal integration is demonstrated, which can dynamically manipulate the transient evolution of spin-orbital angular momentum in the time domain, and the superposition field distribution in the frequency domain. By introducing sufficient surface wave path difference, different modes can be modulated independently within the separated time window based on the liquid crystal encodings. This space-time correlation coding enables to dynamically control the mode weightings, and finally obtains 16 superposition distributions. This reconfigurable on-chip interferometer and its dynamic spatiotemporal regulation mechanism pioneer an avenue for intelligent perception and photon computing.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae predominantly ferments sugar to ethanol, irrespective of the presence of oxygen, which is known as the Crabtree-effect. Traditional methods rely on static controls of glycolytic flux to make S. cerevisiae Crabtree-negative, which are not favorable for future biomanufacturing applications. Considering native metabolic pathways typically harness dynamic regulatory networks, we therefore aim to develop an alternative strategy using dynamic regulation of the yeast central metabolism to generate Crabtree-negative S. cerevisiae . We report that manipulating a single step at sugar phosphorylation can alter the mode of yeast metabolism with an attenuated Crabtree-effect. By implementing catabolite-regulated sugar phosphorylation, the diauxic shift in budding yeast was effectively reduced. The Crabtree-attenuated metabolism in the engineered yeast was confirmed by multidimensional characterizations such as cell morphology, the measurements of sugar utilization rate and ethanol production, and transcriptomics. In addition, we demonstrated that the Crabtree-attenuated metabolism could substantially improve the mitochondrial synthesis of short branched-chain fatty acids from amino acid catabolism, and allow the synthesis and accumulation of retinaldehyde. Taken together, we present for the first time that manipulation of sugar phosphorylation can alter the mode of yeast metabolism, and the synthetic Crabtree-attenuated yeast factory established here might serve as a non-fermentative biomanufacturing chassis.

Graphical Dynamic regulation of coacervate microdroplets as a protocell model has attracted more and more attention in recent years. However, the dynamic regulation of enzymatic reactions has not yet been achieved. A method to regulate enzymatic reactions rate by assembly-disassembly-reassembly of light-induced coacervates is proposed, which could pave the way to the further development of dynamic coacervate-based protocells. Membrane-free coacervate microdroplets are widely utilized as protocell or membrane-less organelle models in the study of cell physicochemical properties. Dynamic regulation of coacervate microdroplets is of great significance because of the close connection between the formation/dissociation of condensate in vivo and physiology and pathology. Here, we describe light-responsive coacervate microdroplets prepared from azobenzene cation trans-azobenzenetrimethylammonium bromide (trans-azoTAB) and anion succinylated amylose (Su-Amy), which are formed by hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic interaction. The rapid and accurate response of azoTAB to light makes the microdroplets disassemble and reassemble within seconds under UV and within minutes under blue light, which provides a method to regulate the enzymatic reaction rates by the light-induced assembly-disassembly-reassembly of the coacervate microdroplets. Our results show a new type of membrane-less protocell model that can realize flexible spatiotemporal control and demonstrate a method for dynamically regulating the rate of enzymatic reactions inside the microdroplets, which provides a feasible scheme for exploring the relationship between physiology and disease in vitro .

Enhancing catalytic performance through precise control of active site interactions still poses significant challenges. Diverging from conventional static methods, this study pioneers an innovative current-assisted approach to achieve precise, in situ dynamic tuning of electron transfer specifically within Pd-Ce diatomic sites. The groundbreaking current-assisted Pd 1 -Ce 1 /ATO catalyst achieves unprecedentedly low-temperature methane combustion performance, with a remarkable T 50 of 181 °C and a record-high turnover frequency (TOF 260 °C ) of 4.25 × 10 −2 s −1 . The current-induced augmentation of electron transfer from Ce to Pd markedly elevates the electron density around Pd centers , orchestrating dynamic modulation to synergistically enhance catalysis. This modulation amplifies the electron backdonation from electron-rich Pd to the methane C─H bond, facilitating efficient C─H bond scission, while promoting lattice oxygen mobility near Pd 1 -Ce 1 sites by tuning orbital energy matching, thus significantly amplifying the catalyst's oxidation capacity. The synergistic interplay of these electronically tuned factors promotes the formation of a four-center transition state (H 3 C δ − -Pd-O-H δ + ), effectively weakening the C─H bond and dramatically accelerating methane catalytic oxidation. This work not only achieves ultra-low-temperature catalytic activity with minimal noble metal loading but also establishes a paradigm shift in the rational design of advanced combustion catalysts, enabling on-demand modulation of catalytic activity through real-time regulation of inter-site interactions .

Developing biosensors to monitor and regulate intracellular biosynthesis pathways can significantly enhance natural product yields in microbial cell factories. This study created a novel biosensor in Saccharomyces cerevisiae to respond to p -coumaric acid, a critical precursor in the biosynthesis of polyphenols and flavonoids. This biosensor was constructed by expressing the BsPadR repressor from Bacillus subtilis and engineering hybrid promoters. Notably, the P BS1-CCW12 hybrid promoter exhibited tight regulation by BsPadR and enhanced activity in response to p -coumaric acid. However, excessive BsPadR expression negatively impacted yeast growth, which was mitigated by using weaker promoters, P BST1 and P ERG9 . Furthermore, the impact of nuclear localization signal (SV40-NLS) positioning on BsPadR functionality was explored, revealing that fusion of an SV40-NLS at the C-terminus of BsPadR enhanced the biosensor's performance. To validate its utility, we applied this system to dynamically regulate CrtE (geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase), a key enzyme in lycopene biosynthesis. By coupling p -coumaric acid production with lycopene biosynthesis, we enabled high-throughput colorimetric screening for enzyme evolution and strain selection. This novel biosensor serves as a valuable tool for future studies aimed at optimizing the production of p -coumaric acid and its derivatives in S. cerevisiae , thereby advancing the efficiency of biosynthetic processes in microbial cell factories.
