Dynamic ester bond cross-linking network based on isomannitol

Zhao Yanna,Wang Yuqi,Zhang Ting,Bai Xiaowei,Zhang Yingying

This paper presents the development of recyclable and repairable dynamic ester cross-linked network bio-based Vitrimer (IMT-PER-COO). Pentaerythritol (PER) is used as the crosslinking agent in IMT-PER-COO to form a topological network through hydroxyl groups in PER and isocyanate groups in 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). At 150 ℃, the carbamate bond is simultaneously broken and associated, and the topological network is remapped to achieve the goal of material self-repair. The results showed that the successful synthesis of IMT-PER-COO was confirmed by FTIR, XRD and XPS. The DMA test confirmed the movement of the polymer chain segment at high temperature. In addition, with the increase of PER content, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the material increased, and the thermal stability and mechanical properties were improved. The repairability of the IMT-PER-COO material has also been confirmed. This technology introduces bio-based IMT into the covalent adaptive network, which has great potential for the further development of environmentally friendly materials.

Thermal- and photo-responsive liquid crystalline elastomers fabricated using tung oil-based azobenzene

Haibo Zhang,Wanbing Li,He Liu,Shibin Shang,Zhanqian Song

Azobenzene-based liquid crystalline elastomers with dynamic ester bonds exhibit high thermal- and photo-responsive properties. However, there are a few studies that focus on photo-induced and thermal-induced behaviors separately. Herein, novel thermal- and photo-responsive LCEs containing dynamic ester bonds were prepared from 4,4’-diglycidyloxy-azobenzene, sebacic acid and tung oil-based azobenzene, which acted as a side chain. The dynamic transesterification reactions on the network structure were confirmed through stress relaxation. The photo-induced and thermal-induced behaviors were also investigated. The monodomain LCEs film was obtained by uniaxial stretching at a temperature above the smectic–isotropic phase transition temperature ( T i ∼82 °C). Due to the breakage and formation of dynamic ester bonds and the order-disorder smectic phase transition caused by heat and the trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene mesogens, the thermal-induced stress of the monodomain LCEs film reached ∼3 MPa. The LCEs film also exhibited thermal-induced shape-memory properties. Investigation of its photo-responsive behavior further demonstrated that the monodomain LCEs film generated stress of ∼1.1 MPa while exhibited photo-induced deformation due to the trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene mesogens upon irradiation with 365 nm UV light. Finally, we observed that the monodomain LCEs film could undergo quickly photo-induced deformation and could be processed into a photo-driven gripper.

Thermally assisted self-healing behavior of anhydride modified polybenzoxazines based on transesterification

Fu Feiya,Huang Meiqi,Zhang Weilan,Zhao Yang,Liu Xiangdong

A self-healing polybenzoxazine is synthesized solely based on dynamic ester bonds. For this purpose, an anhydride (succinic anhydride) was added into bisphenol F derived benzoxazine monomer before thermocuring. Owing to the transesterification of newly formed ester bonds, the thermoset network behaves as a thermoplastic at 140 °C in the presence of Zn (Ac) 2 , and shows self-healing properties even after multiple damage-healing cycles. Furthermore, kinetics study indicates that the transesterification is a first-order reaction and the activation energy is about 135.4 kJ/mol. This study proposes a facile and economical way to prepare self-healing polybenzoxazine. It has promising applications in coating, adhesive, and other smart materials that rely on structurally dynamic polymers.

Thermally resistant and strong remoldable triple-shape memory thermosets based on bismaleimide with transesterification

Ning Lijian,Yuan Li,Liang Guozheng,Gu Aijuan

It is still a great challenge to endow remoldable triple-shape memory thermosets (Rtri-SMTs) with high glass transition temperature ( T g ) and high mechanical properties. Herein, two Rtri-SMTs with high T g and high tensile properties, coded as BA1 and BA2, were developed through building unique dynamic crosslinked networks based on bismaleimide and novel bisallyl compounds with dynamic ester bonds (AEG1 and AEG2). The T g values of BA1 and BA2 resins are 143 °C and 203 °C, respectively, much higher than those of Rtri-SMTs reported so far (10–110 °C); meanwhile, BA resins exhibit high tensile strengths (BA1: 81 MPa; BA2: 84 MPa) and moduli (BA1: 2165 MPa; BA2: 3233 MPa), which are severally at least about 1.3–1.4 and 3.2–4.7 times of those Rtri-SMTs in the literature, respectively. Besides the superiorly high thermal and tensile properties, both BA resins are able to be remolded and reconfigured through the re-arrangement of crosslinked networks induced by dynamic exchange reaction of ester bonds. The mechanism behind these attractive properties of BA1 and BA2 resins is discussed. Graphical abstract Remoldable triple-shape memory thermosets with high glass transition temperature, high mechanical properties and good reconfigurability were developed.

A Quercetin-Derived Polybasic Acid Hardener for Reprocessable and Degradable Epoxy Resins Based on Transesterification

Muhammad A. Rashid,Siyao Zhu,Qiuran Jiang,Liying Zhang,Yi Wei,Wanshuang Liu

The development of recyclable thermosets with high performance from renewable resources is highly desirable from the concerns of environmental and resource economics. Here, a full biobased carboxyl-containing epoxy hardener (CF-quercetin) was prepared from quercetin and succinic anhydride (starch/sugar derivative) through a mild one-step reaction. The epoxy resin cured by CF-quercetin shows tensile strength (92 MPa) comparable with commercial counterparts and high storage modulus (3800 MPa) at room temperature. Owing to the high content of dynamic ester bonds in the epoxy networks, the cured epoxy resin can be repeatedly reprocessed like thermoplastics, and 91% recovery of tensile strength from the first reprocessing cycle can be achieved. Meanwhile, the glass-transition temperature and thermal stability of the reprocessed epoxy resin remain almost constant compared with the original epoxy resin. Furthermore, the epoxy resin cured by CF-quercetin presents rapid degradation in alkali aqueous solution (NaOH, 1 M) within 6 h at room temperature, but it is fully nondegradable in acidic and neutral solutions over a period of 120 days. The cured epoxy resin also shows acceptable stability in many conventional organic solvents. Taken together, our work provides a simple method to prepare a universal quercetin-based hardener for epoxy resins with reprocessability, degradability, and high mechanical performance.

Bio-based Tetrafunctional Epoxy Monomer Containing a Dicyclo Diacetal Structure and Its Medium-Temperature-Cured Epoxy Vitrimer System with Excellent Mechanical and Multifunctional Properties

Yajie Zhang,Li Yuan,Guozheng Liang,Aijuan Gu

A bio-based tetrafunctional epoxy monomer containing a dicyclo diacetal linkage was successfully synthesized via acetalization of protocatechualdehyde (PCA) with erythritol, followed by a reaction with bioderived epichlorohydrin. The epoxy monomer exhibits good reactivity with glutaric anhydride in the presence of a zinc(II) acetylacetonate (ZAA) catalyst and can be cured using a medium-temperature procedure. The prepared epoxy vitrimer (DGZ) systems exhibit excellent mechanical and thermal properties resulting from the rigid dicyclo diacetal and aromatic structures and the high conversion of epoxy groups (αepoxy group). When the ZAA content is 2.5%, DGZ has optimal integrated mechanical properties, and its impact strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength can reach 20 kJ/m2, 60 MPa, and 119 MPa, respectively, which can be compared with those of the commercial bisphenol A epoxy resin cured with a high-temperature procedure. DGZ systems have a good glass-transition temperature (Tg) of 111–117 °C. The broad glass transition endows DGZ with a good shape memory effect. The introduction of dynamic ester bonds in DGZ brings good self-healing ability, welding ability, and rapid stress relaxation. The self-healing efficiency of the scratches on the surface of DGZ can reach ∼100% at 200 °C. Owing to the existence of dicyclo diacetal linkages, DGZ can be completely degraded in 0.1 and 1 M HCl solutions at 25–80 °C. DGZ also has good dielectric properties due to the rigid dicyclo diacetal and aromatic structures, as well as a high αepoxy group.

Recyclable, photothermal dual responsive shape memory epoxy vitrimers containing dynamic oxime-carbamate bonds, dynamic ester bonds and hydrogen bonds based on vegetable oil

Xiaoqi Xie,Shouhai Li,Mei Li,Haiyang Ding,Mingtao Lin,Lina Xu,Na Yao,Qingyuan Feng,Xiaohua Yang,Xiao Feng,Yan Zhang,Yi Xing

The utilization of natural and renewable vegetable oil resources for development of multi-functional polymer materials aligns with the expanding practical application requirements and adheres to sustainable development strategies. Here, 3 different novel vegetable oil-based active prepolymers containing carboxyl groups, quinone oxime, isocyanate (NCO), and oxime-carbamate structures were synthesized using oleic acid as the raw material. Then a series of vegetable oil-based epoxy vitrimers were constructed via crosslinking polymerization with epoxy resin. The molecular structure, mechanical properties, and thermal characteristics of the fabricated vitrimers were systematically investigated, and their reprocessability and photothermal dual responsive shape memory behavior were also analyzed in detail. The resulting polymers exhibit superior controllable mechanical properties, and display outstanding reprocessability without the addition of a catalyst. The dynamic three-dimensional cross-linking networks formed by dynamic oxime-carbamate, dynamic ester bonds and hydrogen bonds endow the polymerization systems with exceptional reprocessability. The incorporation of quinone oxime groups within the polymerization systems endows the polymers with excellent photothermal dual-response shape memory performance. The superior adhesion and repair capabilities make the polymers suitable for use as reusable adhesives. The polymers developed here hold significant potential for applications in medical, electronic, and other fields.

Dynamic Ester-Enabled Recyclable Epoxy Adhesives from Glucose and Soybean Oil: Storage-Stable, High-Adhesion, and On-Demand Degradable

Shuaiqi Yang,Dongkun Chu,Shanshan Dai,Xin Wang,Shuai Du,Fengyuan Zhang,Songqi Ma

We report the first high-performance recyclable adhesive synthesized from renewable glucose and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) via dynamic β-hydroxy ester bond engineering without a catalyst and solvent. This strategy eliminates the need for complex chemical modifications typically required in bio-epoxy systems, offering a scalable and sustainable alternative. This bio-based epoxy system combines excellent storage stability (>34 days in a viscous flow state) with fast curing at 140–170 °C, addressing a key trade-off in the adhesive design. Partially cured resin demonstrates a strong tunable underwater adhesion (up to 2.2 MPa, regulated by viscosity), while fully cured resin achieves remarkable optical transparency and superior glass adhesion (>30.8 MPa)─outperforming commercial counterparts. Critically, the adhesive enables rapid debonding at moderate temperatures (e.g., 120 °C) and degrades via transesterification, facilitating efficient recycling and reusability. Leveraging abundant, low-cost renewable feedstocks and a scalable solvent-free manufacturing process, this adhesive offers a sustainable alternative for industrial applications, aligning with global trends toward circular economy.
