The widespread use of counterfeit goods caused significant damage to economy, personal data security, and public health. There is an urgent need to develop innovative anticounterfeiting materials to enhance their performance. Anticounterfeiting labels based on responsive photonic crystals have been widely researched for the inherent difficulty in replicating the delicate structures and structure colors. By integrating various distinct nanoparticles (NPs), it is expected to produce photonic crystal patterns that offer more intricate color effects and improved anticounterfeiting capabilities. In this work, we reported a photonic crystal anticounterfeiting label with dynamic color variations in solvent vapors and pattern conversions upon vapor liquefication by utilizing three different nanoparticles including d-SiO2, h-SiO2, and m-SiO2 NPs as building blocks. This anticounterfeiting label exhibits a wealth of dynamic color changes associated with the absorption time, absorption rate, absorption medium, and microstructure of the nanoparticles, offering diverse visual effects and showcasing interesting anticounterfeiting performances. The dynamic color change or pattern conversion effect of this photonic crystal (PC) pattern is realized through refractive index changes induced by vapor absorption or solvent filling, which involves no volume changes and shows exceptional durability for repeated applications. This label shows promising broad applications in anticounterfeiting areas.

Optical materials with dynamic colors have shown great prospects for applications in display devices, smart windows, and camouflage coatings. Recently, intercalation has been demonstrated to be a powerful strategy for tuning electromagnetic properties of two-dimensional materials ranging from visible to microwave wavelengths, such as the visible color, infrared emission, terahertz radiation, and optical second-harmonic generation. Here, a systematic study of graphene intercalation compound (GIC)-based coloration films is presented. Through lithium (Li), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and ferric chloride (FeCl3) intercalation, the color of a multilayer graphene (MLG) film transforms from gray to yellow, blue, and dark, respectively. This is attributed to the reconstruction of the band structure of graphene after intercalation, resulting in a significant effect on its optical properties. Furthermore, tunable and reversible color changes of MLG film have been demonstrated by precisely controlling the Li-intercalation process. Our research indicates that intercalation is a versatile strategy for fabricating advanced coloration materials and provides a promising tunable optical surface for the application in sensing, adaptive camouflage, and smart displaying.

Reconfigurable precision regulation of structural color devices is a critical step toward versatile advanced functionality and broadening application scenarios. In this work, we demonstrate the precise manipulation of red, green, and blue, three primary colors generated by the five-layer nanocomposite coatings composed of polyaniline/indium tin oxide/titanium/titanium dioxide/titanium (PANI/ITO/Ti/TiO2/Ti). The modulation of dynamic structural colors of the proposed multilayer coatings originates from a cooperative interaction between the top PANI conductive polymer and the bottom traditional four-layer structural color consisting of ITO/Ti/TiO2/Ti. Specifically, the three primitive colors are first achieved by three different combinations of both TiO2 and ITO thicknesses, and then each color is modulated precisely by an intrinsic color change of the top PANI conductive layer at various voltages. As a result, the nanocomposite coatings demonstrate millisecond response time, excellent durability over 100 cycles, driving voltages below 1 V, and a wide temperature tolerance range from 5 to 60 °C. Additionally, centimeter-scale R, G, and B letter-shaped samples are fabricated using a mask plate coating technique, showcasing color modulation in patterned samples. Our work offers a straightforward strategy to realize the dynamic manipulation of the three primary colors within a certain range, which lays a solid foundation for the development of dynamic display technologies, such as dynamic paintings and e-books.

Integrating responsive photonic crystals (RPCs) and quantum dots (QDs) effectively to realize multimode dynamic color regulation is of great significance for promoting advances in color display science. Herein, a new type of flexible dynamic color display with multimode reversible switching between transparent and colorful states based on the combination of RPCs and CdTe QDs is designed. This unique system is fabricated by encapsulating a thin layer of ordered arrays of SiO 2 @CdTe@SiO 2 (SQS) colloids with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), which generates an elastic film with sandwiched structure of PDMS/SQS/PDMS. Owing to the similarity in the optical properties of PDMS and SQS, the display is highly transparent in the normal state. Moreover, the resultant flexible display exhibits obvious change in color by mechanical stimuli or UV exposure. Finally, the ability to display joints motion amplitudes of human body as well as the applications in advanced security is demonstrated.
