Removing unwanted materials, such as organic coatings and soil, from the cultural relic surface is a complex and significant task in the field of cultural heritage conservation. Microemulsion-loaded gel can effectively and safely remove those organic coatings and soil. Here, we employed a simple solvent exchange strategy to prepare a microemulsion-loaded polyvinyl alcohol/polyethyleneimine (PVA/PEI) hydrogel. First, PVA and PEI were dissolved into DMSO to form a gel. Then, the gel was immersed into a microemulsion composed of water, ethyl acetate, propylene carbonate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and 1-pentanol to exchange DMSO. Microemulsion-loaded PVA/PEI hydrogel can be synthesized by completely substituting DMSO. To investigate the microstructure, rheological properties, and mechanical properties of the gel, scanning electron microscopy, a rheometer, and a universal testing machine were used, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis was conducted to explore the synthesis mechanism and confirm the successful loading of microemulsion within the microemulsion-loaded PVA/PEI hydrogel. Furthermore, FT-IR, a depth-of-field microscope, and a glossmeter were utilized to evaluate the cleaning efficiency of the microemulsion-loaded PVA/PEI hydrogel for removing animal glue and soil from the surfaces of cultural relics. Moreover, an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer was used to analyze the element component of the ancient coin. The application results showed that the microemulsion-loaded PVA/PEI hydrogel can effectively remove animal glue from an ancient wall painting surface. Moreover, it is capable of removing soil from an ancient coin surface as well, which helped to confirm the age of the coin. This offers a novel method to prepare microemulsion-loaded hydrogel and demonstrates great potential in the cleaning for cultural heritage.

Tie luo (affixed hanging) was an expressive form of traditional Chinese calligraphy or paintings, and popular in the imperial palaces for interior decorations in Qing Dynasty (1644–1911 C.E.). A piece of calligraphic tie luo , written by an eminent calligrapher Gu Gao (1763–1832 C.E.), was restored recently in the Palace Museum, Beijing, China. The paper with pigment coating specially made for this calligraphic piece was named as fenjian . This article presented results from materials identification prior to the restoration. Multianalysis with scientific approaches revealed how tie luo was manufactured. It could be concluded that the investigated tie luo used a paper made from bast fibers of mulberry trees. And the decorative ground layer for the piece was also studied, which indicated that a type of organic red pigments were used for the masterpiece. White lead was considered as the main pigment, mixed with a red dye extracted from sappanwood. Meanwhile, animal glue, drying oils and beeswax were confirmed as the organic binding media. In dye analysis, protosappanin B and brazilin as well as brazilein were identified, which implied that sappanwood was used for the organic manufacture of pigments. In addition, both Nowik type A and C were found in the research, which were characteristic of sappanwood for identification.

Glioma is the most common primary malignant tumor of the nervous system that starts in the glial cells. Its high invasiveness and recurrence pose major challenges to its effective treatment. Ferroptosis is a new type of programmed cell death characterized by intracellular iron overload and accumulation of lipid peroxides. Existing studies have demonstrated the efficacy of targeted ferroptosis therapy in the treatment of glioma. In this study, folic acid (FA)-modified layered double hydroxide loaded with simvastatin (SIM), a ferroptosis drug, was used to prepare a novel ferroptosis nanodrug (FA-LDH@SIM). The prepared nanodrug improved the therapeutic effect of SIM on glioma. Compared with free SIM, FA-LDH@SIM showed greater cytotoxicity, significantly inhibited glioma cell proliferation, and significantly inhibited glioma invasion and migration ability. Furthermore, SIM could induce changes in certain ferroptosis indicators, including increased intracellular LPO, ROS and MDA level, decreased GSH production, increased divalent iron level, and changes in mitochondrial morphology. Further experiments revealed that SIM induced ferroptosis in tumor cells by down-regulating HMGCR expression and inhibiting the mevalonate pathway to down-regulate GPX4 expression. In addition, the FA-LDH@SIM group significantly inhibited tumor growth after treatment in the animal glioma model. These results indicate that the FA-LDH@SIM nanodrug delivery system exhibits excellent anti-tumor effects both in vitro and in vivo , and is an effective method for the treatment of glioma.
