Platinum group metals (PGMs) are scarce critical materials, and recovering PGMs from spent automotive catalysts (SAC) is economically and ecologically important. However, dissolving the Fe-Si-PGMs alloy derived from SAC is challenging, impeding PGMs recovery. This study aims to develop a more sustainable, efficient, and scalable leaching scheme. We demonstrate efficient leaching of Fe-Si-PGMs alloy using a thermochemical combined with mechanochemical leaching method with a HCl + FeCl 3 + H 2 O 2 solution. Kinetics parameters studies optimize the leaching process. The main obstacles to leaching are the chemical inertness of the alloy and the SiO 2 encapsulation formed. Ultimately, efficient dissolution of 99 % Pd, 95 % Pt and 88 % Rh was achieved, increasing PGMs leaching by 17 % compared to single thermochemical leaching. Additionally, this work remedies the scalability limitations of mechanochemical leaching and provides valuable insights for PGMs recovery.

Traditional technologies for the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) mainly focus on reductive leaching, which often leads to total leaching rather than selective leaching of metals. As a result, loss of valuable metal ions, particularly Li+, occurs in subsequent extraction processes, causing low recycling efficiency of valuable metals. Inspired by the oxide-delithiation process in materials science, here, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are first introduced to selectively recover Li from spent LIBs during hydrometallurgical leaching (oxidative leaching), and a high Li recovery rate is achieved with an extremely high slurry density. In AOPs, the sulfate radical (SO4•–) and hydroxyl radical (HO•), which have high oxidation potentials, are in situ generated by heat-activated persulfate to prevent the leaching of Co2+ and Mn2+ and, simultaneously, promote the leaching of Li. Besides, chemical leaching processes are coupled with AOPs to enhance the leaching of Li for the incomplete delithiation of AOPs. Through the selective recovery, the extraction process of Li is drastically shortened. A lithium-rich solution (18.2 g/L of Li+), which is available to directly prepare qualified lithium products, can be obtained in only two steps. The reaction mechanisms between AOPs and spent LIBs are also comprehensively investigated. In the end, the loss of Li is only 2.06% in the purification processes, leading to a high recycling efficiency of Li. Li2CO3 with a purity of 99.0% was obtained. Furthermore, the introduction of AOPs for selective extraction of metals will not only show its significant value in the waste recycling field but also in the mineral resource utilization.

In response to the escalating scarcity of resources, the practice of recycling waste has emerged as a pivotal strategy for sustainable development. In the present study, an innovative method is introduced to enhance the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from spent automotive catalysts (SACs), involving an integrated electrochemical metallurgy process integrating mechanochemical reduction pretreatment and electrochemical leaching. An in-depth exploration on the influences of mechanochemical ball-milling parameters and electrochemical leaching conditions on PGM recovery yielded insightful results. Notably, Zn emerges as a key catalyst to promote the generation of highly reactive PGM particles, facilitate grinding, reduce platinum group metal oxides, and alloy with PGMs. The mechanochemical reduction pretreatment significantly reduces the apparent dissolution activation energies of Pd, Pt, and Rh from 40.1 kJ/mol, 43.7 kJ/mol, and 62.5 kJ/mol to 13.2 kJ/mol, 17.5 kJ/mol, and 22.1 kJ/mol, respectively. Following optimization through orthogonal experiments, the leaching efficiencies of Pd, Pt, and Rh reached exceptional levels: 98.5 %, 98.1 %, and 93.3 %, respectively. This study unveils a highly efficient and practical approach for leaching PGMs from SACs, which is conducive to sustainable resource management.
