The effect of the industrial chemical refining process on the physicochemical properties, fatty acid composition, and bioactive minor components of peanut oil was studied. The results showed that the moisture and volatile matter content, acid value, peroxide value, and p -anisidine value were significantly changed ( P < 0.05) after the complete refining process. No significant variation ( P > 0.05) in the iodine value was observed among all the peanut oil samples. Similar changes were observed in the DPPH radical scavenging activity and the total tocol content during chemical refining. In addition, chemical refining did not have much effect on the fatty acid composition, except for certain changes of several individual fatty acids. Moreover, the chemical refining resulted in 23.6, 23.1, and 9.5 % losses of squalene, total phytosterols, and total tocols ( α, β, γ, δ -tocopherols and α, β, γ, δ -tocotrienols), respectively. The degumming–neutralization step caused the greatest overall reduction of these bioactive minor components. However, the concentrations of α -tocotrienol and γ -tocotrienol increased after full refining. Furthermore, chemical refining slightly changed the relative proportions of individual phytosterols and individual tocols.

Electrorefining of low-grade titanium is one of the strategies for achieving high-purity titanium. However, the presence of nonuniform geometric effects would be induced to impact the nonuniform geometric distribution of overpotential, leading to impurity dissolution and nonuniform Ti deposition. Here, in situ high-temperature characterizations on the molten salt electrorefining process are applied to establish an anodic dissolution principle for quantitatively evaluating nonuniform geometric effects of electrode. For eliminating the nonuniform geometric effects, coaxial anode-cathode configurations are designed to promote the nonuniform anodic dissolution and nonuniform cathodic deposition. Consequently, the geometric uniformity of titanium products on the cathodes is substantially enhanced, and thus, long-term stable electrorefining process (~12 hours, ~330% increment compared to the electrode of reference configuration) and highly purified titanium products (99.2%) are achieved.

The effect of chemical refining process on the physicochemical characteristics and oxidative stability of perilla seed oil was investigated. We analyzed five samples corresponding to each step of the refining process (degumming, neutralization, bleaching, deodorization, and refined oil). The results indicated that the acid value (2.20–0.24 mg KOH/g) and peroxide value (4.32–1.26 mEq/kg) decreased significantly, while the saponification value (178.81–196.24 mg KOH/g) and p -anisidine value (3.45–9.55) increased dramatically. There was no significant difference in conjugated diene, except in the degummed oil. Additionally, the refractive index did not change throughout the process. Eleven fatty acids were identified in samples, and there was no significant difference observed among them. The refining process resulted in decreases in total tocopherol content (25.0%) and total phenolic content (51.7%). Degummed, neutralized, bleached, and deodorized oils have high primary oxidation stability, whereas refined oils exhibit low secondary oxidation rates. Practical applications The present study was designed to examine the physicochemical properties of perilla seed oil at various phases of refining, as well as its bioactive compounds and oxidative stability during the process. This study provides a good reference for the industrial parameters of the refining process to obtain high-quality products for consumers.

Walnut oils are of important academic and economic value, and are becoming one of the most important woody oils. Accurate and moderate refining techniques are required to produce high-quality walnut oils. In this work, walnut oils obtained from cold processing were refined in three typical techniques, mainly chemical refining, water degumming, and molecular distillation. Physicochemical properties (acid value and peroxide value [POV]), minor components (tocopherol, polyphenols, and phytosterol), oxidative stability indices, and volatile compounds were analyzed to find out the appropriate refining method for the cold-pressed walnut oils. Quality indices of all the refined oils from the three different refining methods met the requirements of the national standard, of which the POV of chemically refined oil (0.241 g/100 g) was higher than crude oil (0.058 g/100 g). Water degumming was most suitable for retaining of bioactive compounds, for example, the tocopherol was 259.40 mg/kg, the polyphenols was 44.54 mg GAE/kg, and the phytosterol was 987.32 mg/kg, but oxidation stability of the obtained oil (3.09 h) was lower than that of molecular distilled oil (4.18 h). Initial physicochemical properties especially the POV had a significant impact on oxidation stability. There is a trade-off between the retention of nutrients and extending shelf life, indicating appropriate refining techniques should be developed; that is, water degumming is suggested to be involved in producing high-quality cold-pressed walnut oils.

High-temperature electrochemistry is widely used in many fields. However, real-time observations and an in-depth understanding of the inside evolution of this system from an experimental perspective remain limited because of harsh reaction conditions and multiphysics fields. Here, we tackled this challenge with a high-temperature electrolysis facility developed in-house. This facility permits in situ x-ray computer microtomography (μ-CT) for nondestructive and quantitative three-dimensional (3D) imaging. In an electrorefining system, the μ-CT probed the dynamic evolution of 3D morphology and components of electrodes (4D). Subsequently, this 4D process was visually presented via reconstructed images. The results monitor the efficiency of the process, explore the dynamic mechanisms, and even offer real-time optimization. This 4D analysis platform is notable for in-depth combinations of traditional electrochemistry with digital twin technologies owing to its multiscale visualization and high efficiency of data extraction.
