Accurate and facile differentiation of cell types is essential for accurate diagnosis and therapy of diseases. However, it remains challenging due to low specificity, requirement of sophisticated instruments, and tedious operation steps. Herein, a simple, washing- and label-free chemical tongue was constructed for differentiation of cell types. In the array-based sensing platform, DNA-ligand ensembles adsorbed on the surface of MnO 2 nanosheets were used as sensing probes. Instead of aptamers from cell-SELEX, the randomly designed DNA strands were used, offering versatile interactions with cells. The property that MnO 2 nanosheets can be degraded by intracellular glutathione makes the platform avoid the washing step. Eight types of cell lines were distinguished from each other after the data were treated with principal component analysis (PCA). In addition, a 95% of identification accuracy for the randomly selected unknown samples was achieved. The strategy shows an excellent performance not only in distinguishing cell lines but also in the identification of unknown cell samples.

The improper application of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) presents significant health hazards via vector food contamination. A critical limitation of these traditional existing approaches is their inability to concurrently discern and distinguish among diverse NSAIDs, presenting a notable gap in the analytical capabilities within this domain. Herein, a creative dual-channel fluorescence sensor array was developed for the rapid discrimination and determination of NSAIDs, utilizing complexes of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) with three distinct modified poly(ethylenimines) (PEIs) to address this challenge. The array successfully differentiated and identified 19 NSAIDs with 97% accuracy at a concentration of 1 mM. In addition, it also achieved analyses of individual NSAIDs across a range of concentrations, NSAID mixtures, and impurities of aspirin using statistical analysis methods. More importantly, the approach effectively detected NSAIDs in complex matrices, such as milk and urine, demonstrating its potential for real-world applications.

Rapid detection and identification of multiple metal ions is significant in that toxic metal ions are harmful to public health and environmental safety. Herein, a fluorescent sensor array composed of three lanthanide-based fluorescent probes (Ce-ATP, Tb-GMP, and Eu-BOP) was developed as a novel tongue-mimic chemosensor array for rapid discrimination of multiple metal ions. The three fluorescent probes exhibit different binding affinities toward metal ions, resulting in diverse fluorescence behaviors and distinct fluorescence response patterns. The patterns can act as “fingerprints” for identification of multiple metal ions via principal component analysis (PCA) technology. The Ce-ATP/Tb-GMP/Eu-BOP sensor array achieved good discrimination of eleven kinds of metal ions (Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ , Co 2+ , Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , Mn 2+ , Fe 3+ , Cr 3+ , Ag + , Cr 6+ , Mn 7+ ). It is still sensitive in mixtures of multiple metal ions and would be potentially fit for analysis of complex composition. Interestingly, the sensor array can discriminate metal ions with different valence, for example Cr 3+ and Cr 6+ . With tap water as real sample, the eleven metal ions can be well distinguished with excellent recovery, indicating promising potential application in evaluating water quality and environmental protection.

Single-atom nanozymes have made important progress in the field of sensors, but their catalytic performance as natural enzyme substitutes is far from satisfactory. We describe here a FeFe dual single-atom nanozyme (Fe2N6/CN) with a Fe loading of 0.89 wt %, and it shows a synergistic effect and a peroxidase (POD)-like activity. Especially, the Fe2N6/CN nanozyme shows an excellent specific activity (315.4 U μmol–1). The values of catalytic rate constant (kcat) and catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) for the Fe2N6/CN with 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) are 23.8 s–1 and 8.24 × 104 M–1 s–1, respectively, and with H2O2, they are 30.8 s–1 and 0.919 × 103 M–1 s–1, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Fe2N6/CN possesses excellent POD-like activity. Based on the POD-like activity of Fe2N6/CN, we design a Fe2N6/CN nanozyme chemical tongue for the colorimetric recognition of aromatic amines using three wavelengths as array’s channels. The data interpretation using linear discriminant analysis, clustering heat map, etc., shows excellent clustering separation and classification of aromatic amines. Furthermore, this chemical tongue can simultaneously recognize mixtures of different molar ratios, quantitatively determine different concentrations of individual aromatic amines, and even identify unknown samples. This preparation strategy not only provides a promising pathway for the utilization of nanozymes but also highlights the potential of dual single atoms as an attractive platform for design of sensor arrays.

Simple and efficient identification of multiple bacteria and sterilization in real time is of considerable significance for clinical diagnostics and quality control in food. Herein, a novel chemical-tongue sensor array with 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a single probe was developed for bacterial identification and photothermal elimination. The synthesized bimetallic palladium/platinum nanoparticles (Pd/PtNPs) present excellent catalytic capability that can catalyze TMB into oxidized TMB (oxTMB) with four feature absorption peaks. Bacteria have different ability on inhibiting the reaction between TMB and Pd/PtNPs. With the absorbance intensity of oxTMB at the four feature peaks as readout, nine kinds of bacteria including two drug-resistant bacteria can be successfully distinguished via linear discriminant analysis. Remarkably, oxTMB exhibits excellent photothermal properties and can effectively kill bacteria in real time under near-infrared laser irradiation. The strategy of selecting TMB as a single probe simplifies the experimental operation and reduces the time cost. Furthermore, the developed sensing system was used to promote the wound healing process of MRSA-infected mice in vivo. The investigation provides a promising simple and efficient strategy for bacterial identification and sterilization with a universal platform, which has great potential application in clinical diagnosis and therapy.
