Synthesis and thermal properties of novel microencapsulated phase-change materials with binary cores and epoxy polymer shells

Wei Kun,Ma Biao,Wang Hainian,Liu Yu,Luo Yu

A series of novel epoxy polymer shell microcapsules with n -tetradecane and dimethylbenzene as binary core materials are successfully synthesized via interfacial polymerization. Dimethylbenzene is used as the solvent for epoxy and n -tetradecane. The chemical structure, surface morphology, and thermal properties of the microencapsulated phase-change materials (micro-PCMs) are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscope. Results show that the micro-PCMs have relatively spherical profiles and smooth surfaces with diameters ranging from 10 to 70 μm. The epoxy shell successfully encapsulates the binary core. Phase-change enthalpy and binary core content in the micro-PCMs increase with the increasing mass ratio of the binary core to the epoxy resin. The micro-PCMs degrade in two steps, and the resulting microcapsules exhibit good thermal stabilities. The degradation temperature decreases, as the core-to-shell mass ratio increases.

Intensification and kinetics of methane hydrate formation under heat removal by phase change of n-tetradecane

Xiaofei Song,Feng Xin,Hongchao Yan,Xingang Li,Hongri Jia

A method of direct heat removal resulting from the phase change of n-tetradecane was used to intensify the heat transfer during hydrate formation. The growth rates of methane hydrate in aqueous slurries containing 25–45 wt % of solid n-tetradecane were investigated at pressures between 4.70 and 6.46 MPa (gauge) and near the fusion point of solid n-tetradecane. Methane hydrate growth started at a practically constant rate, which became variable after a sudden increase. Two rate laws were established to correlate with the experimental data for the constant and variable rate stages. The methane hydrate growth rates achieved with solid n-tetradecane were significantly enhanced compared with those obtained under indirect heat removal. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 61: 3441–3450, 2015

Thermal conductivity measurements for long-chain n-alkanes at evaluated temperature and pressure: n-dodecane and n-tetradecane

Xiong Zheng,Yanqiong Bao,Dan Qu,Jing Wu,Guangzhao Qin,Yu Liu

With the key role of long-chain hydrocarbons in the wide applications in numerous industrial areas, such as working fluids, phase change materials, fuels, etc ., the knowledge of the thermal conductivity of hydrocarbons is essential in the energy conversion process. Thus, it is of great significance to get reliable experimental data of hydrocarbons’ thermal conductivity for further accurately theoretical predictions and the potential applications. In this work, the thermal conductivities of two long-chain hydrocarbons of n-dodecane and n-tetradecane, are investigated experimentally. The transient hot-wire method was used for the measurement of the thermal conductivity under the conditions of 293–523 K and 0.1–15.0 MPa. By comparing the present work with literature results, the possible reasons for the deviations were analyzed. The results in this study provide accurately measured of the thermal conductivity of the two long-chain hydrocarbons at high temperature and pressure, which are expected to fill the gap in literature.

Phase behavior of tetradecane–hexadecane mixtures confined in SBA-15

Pei H. R.,Yan X.,Liu W. B.,Lan X. Z.

Phase behavior of tetradecane–hexadecane mixtures ( n -C 14 H 30 –C 16 H 34 , C 14 –C 16 ) confined in SBA-15 (pore diameters 3.8, 7.8, and 17.2 nm) has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Phase diagram of the confined C 14 –C 16 mixtures is greatly influenced by the pore size, which is simple compared with that for the bulk. Melting points of C 14 and C 16 confined in SBA-15 display a linear relation with pore size. Meanwhile, the C 14 –C 16 mixtures have shown a similar melting behavior as pure C 14 and C 16 . Melting temperatures of three C 14 –C 16 /SBA-15 systems have been fitted as a function of mole fraction x C16 .

Effect of n-tetradecane with or without n-heptadecane on equilibrium dissociation conditions of carbon dioxide hydrate

Meng-Ling Dai,Zhi-Gao Sun

The isochoric stepwise heating method is used to study the effect of liquid hydrocarbon n -tetradecane and n -tetradecane/ n -heptadecane on the equilibrium dissociation conditions of carbon dioxide hydrate. The addition of n -tetradecane or n -tetradecane/ n -heptadecane reduces carbon dioxide hydrate phase equilibrium pressures . As the temperature increases, the promotion effect of the liquid hydrocarbons is more obvious. The promotion effect of n -tetradecane is stronger than that of the mixture of n -tetradecane and n -heptadecane at higher temperature. The quadruple point of carbon dioxide hydrate with the mixture of n -tetradecane and n -heptadecane ( w  = 0.3363) is almost the same as that of carbon dioxide hydrate in pure water.

Kinetics of Carbon Dioxide Hydration Enhanced with a Phase-Change Slurry of n-Tetradecane

Bin Chen,Feng Xin,Xiaofei Song,Xingang Li,Muhammad Zeshan Azam

CO2 capture based on hydrate formation is intensified by an oil-in-water phase-change slurry (PCS) in which the n-tetradecane particles are taken as nucleation centers and are used to directly remove the hydration heat through their solid-to-liquid phase change. In this study, experiments on hydration were conducted at a temperature of 277.6 K and under isobaric pressures in the range of 2.1–2.4 MPa. All measurements were performed at a stirring speed of 450 rpm in PCSs of 25–45 wt % n-tetradecane. Two kinetics models, transport and reversible hydration, were established to regress and analyze the experimental data from the isothermal hydration of CO2 in a semibatch hydrator. For each model, the effects of pressure and PCS composition were examined in detail. As the experimental results show, the induction time before hydration initiated was less than 1 min for all runs, and the duration of the entire hydration process was approximately 13–15 min for each measurement. Furthermore, the average hydration rate reached 197 mol m–3 min–1 at 2.3 MPa in 45 wt % oil-in-water PCS, which demonstrates that the presence of n-tetradecane particles contributes significantly to the enhancement of hydrate formation rate. As the modeling results show, the parameters of the two models were determined by correlating the experimental data, and the interpretations of the measurements by the two models are satisfactory.

Mesoscopic Phase Behavior of Tridecane–Tetradecane Mixtures Confined in Porous Materials: Effects of Pore Size and Pore Geometry

Xiao Yan,Tong Bo Wang,Chun Feng Gao,Xiao Zheng Lan

Phase behaviors of tridecane–tetradecane (n-C13H28–C14H30, C13–C14) system in bulk, and confined in SBA-15 and controlled porous glass (CPG) are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction. Bulk C13–C14 mixtures exhibit a complicated behavior featuring a special rotator phase RI. Adsorbed in SBA-15 with pore diameters (d) of 3.8 and 7.8 nm, the binary mixtures display a melting boundary of a straight line and a curve, respectively. Within SBA-15 (17.2 nm) and CPG (8.1, 31.8, 46.4, and 300 nm), the mixtures show a similar phase behavior to the bulk, especially in the larger pore CPG than 30 nm. Under confinement, the phase behavior of C13–C14 mixtures varies with the pore size as well as the temperature and composition. XRD analysis reveals that the solid alkane molecules take effectively the 2D closed-packed arrangements inside pores of diameters less than 20 nm. In the large pore CPG (d > 30 nm), the alkane molecules regain lamellar ordering in solid states. Pore geometries of SBA-15 and CPG, one-dimensional channels vs three-dimensional connected pores, may also result in much different influence on the phase behavior of the confined mixtures.

Accurate determination of purity for organic compounds using adiabatic calorimetry

Huimin Yan,Fan Yang,Nan Yin,Yan Kou,Quan Shi

Adiabatic calorimetry is a reliable method for determining the purity of organic compounds, offering significant advantages over chromatography by eliminating the need for impurity separation. Despite its longstanding application, research in this area has been limited. This study comprehensively assessed the purity of tetradecanoic acid, n-heptadecane, and phenol using adiabatic calorimetry, comparing the results with those obtained through chromatography. The results demonstrated that tetradecanoic acid purity can be accurately measured, while n-heptadecane exhibited satisfactory repeatability in purity determination without sample separation in polycrystalline forms. Furthermore, the purity of phenol was effectively assessed using adiabatic calorimetry, where chromatography faced challenges. Overall, this study validates adiabatic calorimetry as a robust technique for organic compound purity determination and suggests avenues for further research in this domain.

Biodegradation of tetradecane using Acinetobacter venetianus immobilized on bagasse

Jiajiang Lin,Li Gan,Zuliang Chen,Ravendra Naidu

Immobilized cells present advantages for degrading organic pollutants compared to free suspended cells. However, the immobilization of cells with reference to agricultural waste is still limited. This study investigated using bagasse as a carrier to immobilize Acinetobacter venetianus ( A. venetianus ) for the degradation of n -alkane. The degradation of alkane based on both adsorption and biodegradation by immobilized A. venetianus was observed, where 93.3%, 77.7% and 24.0% of tetradecane (400   mg   L −1 ) were removed by the immobilized cells, free cells and bagasse after 36   h incubation, respectively. Additionally, alkane (C 10 –C 25 ) in diesel was effectively degraded by the immobilized cells, of which 800   mg   L −1 of alkane was completely degraded after 60   h. Furthermore, results showed: (1) tetradecane served as the optimal carbon source at the concentration of 100   mg   L −1 ; and (2) cells immobilization reached its peak efficiency with the cells-to-bagasse ratio of 0.5   mg cell   g −1 bagasse . Cells strongly immobilized on bagasse retained a high degradation rate of 77.6% after shaking at 1500   rpm. Bagasse protected the cells from pollution stress including cadmium (Cd(II)) and phenanthrene. After 8 reuse cycles, immobilized cells became more stable and efficient. Bagasse- A. venetianus has potential for future application in remediating diesel contaminants.

Liquid viscosity, interfacial tension, thermal diffusivity and mutual diffusivity of n-Tetradecane with dissolved carbon dioxide

Junwei Cui,Jiangtao Wu,Shengshan Bi

Systems in connection with hydrocarbons with dissolved carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) are widespread in various chemical and engineering applications such as Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesizes, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The thermophysical properties are necessary for understanding and designing those relevant processes. In this work, the liquid viscosity, interfacial tension, thermal diffusivity and mutual diffusivity of n -tetradecane with dissolved CO 2 were investigated under macroscopic equilibrium from 323 to 473 K and over a pressure range up to 5.6 MPa. With a careful evaluation of the uncertainty, the average expanded uncertainty of liquid viscosity, surface tension, thermal diffusivity and mutual diffusivity was 2.9%, 2.4%, 11.4% and 4.4%, respectively. The liquid viscosity and interfacial tension decline when the pressure of the system or the mole fraction of CO 2 in the liquid phase increases. Empirical correlations were used to represent the liquid viscosity and interfacial tension with an absolute average deviation (AAD) of 2.8% and 0.2 mN · m  −   1 . A comparison of available liquid viscosity and interfacial tension from the literature were performed. In the overlapped temperature and pressure region, good agreement can be found. In terms of the thermal diffusivity, there is no obvious dependency on pressure. The mutual diffusivity decreases with pressure at 323 K, while the decline behavior cannot be observed above 323 K when taking the combined uncertainty into consideration. This work was expected to provide reliable and accurate fundamental thermophysical properties of liquid with dissolved gas systems in engineering and chemical processes.

Optimized emulsifier combination based microencapsulated phase change materials (MicroPCMs): Preparation, characterization, and applications

Fan Zhigeng,Han Pengju,Zhang Zhiguo,Hu Zhijun

Microencapsulated phase change materials (microPCMs) using urea-formaldehyde as the shell material and tetradecane as the phase change material were successfully prepared via in situ polymerization reaction in an oil-in-water emulsion. Four groups of emulsifiers containing ionic or nonionic kinds were investigated through the performance of the as-prepared microPCMs including micro-topography, thermal energy storage, and thermal stability. The emulsifying capacity and the underlying mechanism of the emulsifiers were also evaluated and discussed. Experimental results showed that the combined emulsifier group of Triton X-100/sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate as the emulsifier provided the optimal emulsification for the preparation of microPCMs. The as-prepared microPCMs were then combined with expanded polyurethane in two manners to fabric thermal insulation composites with the phase change energy storage (PES) function. The thermal insulation and PES properties of the functional composites were evaluated using a thermal imager and wireless thermocouple. Both the composites revealed a distinct temperature transition region in their temperature–time curves, which demonstrated that the PES functional composites had been successfully fabricated. The research results may provide reliable data support for practical applications of microPCMs in the PES functional composite field.

Effect of liquid alkane on carbon dioxide hydrate formation

Mengling Dai,Zhigao Sun,Jia Song,Rong Li

Hydrophobic surface affects gas hydrate formation. It is an effective method to promote hydrate formation by adding hydrophobic materials into hydrate formation system. However, it is little known about the interaction between hydrate formation and macroalkane. n -Dodecane and n -tetradecane are selected as additives to investigate their effect on CO 2 hydrate formation in this work. The addition of liquid alkanes effectively improves hydrate nucleation, shortens the induction time of CO 2 hydrate formation, and improves the hydrate growth rate. In addition, the total CO 2 uptake at the end of the experiments was increased in the presence of liquid alkanes. Compared with the addition of n -dodecane, n -tetradecane has a weaker effect on CO 2 hydrate formation. Increasing the stirring rate can effectively reduce the induction time of hydrate formation and improve hydrate growth rate, but has little effect on gas storage capacity in hydrates. The experimental results also show that the increase of experimental pressure or the decrease of temperature is conducive to hydrate formation.
