Water purification systems based on transition metal dichalcogenides face significant challenges, including lack of reactivity under dark conditions, scarcity of catalytically active sites, and rapid recombination of photo-generated charge carriers. Simultaneously increasing the number of active sites and improving charge separation efficiency has proven difficult. In this study, we present a novel approach combining molybdenum (Mo) monoatomic doping and size engineering to produce a series of Mo-ReS 2 quantum dots (MR QDs) with controllable dimensions. High-resolution structural characterization, first-principle calculations, and piezo force microscopy reveal that Mo monoatomic doping enhances the lattice asymmetry, thereby improving the piezoelectric properties. The resulting piezoelectric polarization and the generated built-in electric field significantly improve charge separation efficiency, leading to optimized photocatalytic performance. Additionally, the doping strategy increases the number of active sites and improves the adsorption of intermediate radicals, substantially boosting photo-sterilization efficiency. Our results demonstrate the elimination of 99.95% of Escherichia coli and 100.00% of Staphylococcus aureus within 30 min. Furthermore, we developed a self-purification system simulating water drainage, utilizing low-frequency water streams to trigger the piezoelectric behavior of MR QDs, achieving piezoelectric synergistic photodegradation. This innovative approach provides a more environmentally friendly and economical method for water self-purification, paving the way for advanced water treatment technologies. Graphical

Hollow double-shell Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 (HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 ) Z-Scheme photocatalyst with a porous structure was designed and successfully synthesized by anchoring Cu 2 O nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of CuCo 2 O 4 hollow spheres in situ. HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity towards chlorotetracycline (CTC) oxidation and nitrobenzene (NB) reduction under visible light irradiation. Total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 63% was achieved over HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 for CTC degradation, which is 1.7 and 2.1 times higher than that of pristine Cu 2 O and CuCo 2 O 4 . Moreover, the photocatalytic activity for both oxidation and reduction were simultaneously improved in CTC + NB mixed system owing to the presence of the synergistic photocatalytic effect. The superior photocatalytic performance of HDS-Cu 2 O@CuCo 2 O 4 hybrid system should be mainly attributed to the unique hollow structure as well as the Z-scheme charge transfer pathway, which not only improve the utilization of visible light but also enhance the separation efficiency of photoexcited charge carriers. The proposed strategy provides an insight into the application of hollow Z-Scheme photocatalyst in environmental remediation.

A synergistic photocatalytic system based on Fe-based perovskite with persulfate was constructed for alkali lignin (AL) degradation in pulp and paper wastewater. The degradation performance and mechanism on AL were carried out under ambient temperature and pressure, accompanied by visible light irradiation. The results showed that the synergistic photocatalytic system exhibited much better performance on AL degradation than the single catalytic system. The degradation efficiency reached 73.5% under the optimal conditions and was constant at around 65% over the pH range from 2 to 8. A significant escalation of the AL degradation was observed at pH 10, reaching 80.1%. The photogenerated holes, 1 O 2 and SO 4 − ·, generated by the system were involved in the degradation, and the holes played a dominant role. During the degradation process, the efficient promotion of cleavage events in lignin methoxy, β -O-4 bond, and benzene ring was observed. Consequently, the depolymerization process led to the generation of high-value compounds, namely p -hydroxybenzaldehyde and vanillin. Remarkably, the yields of the high-value compounds in the synergistic photocatalytic system were five times larger than those in the control. This study offered a viable method to activate persulfate for alkali lignin degradation and to achieve a mutually beneficial strategy for wastewater treatment and recycling.

Interfacial effect played a critical role in catalytic reactions for environmental remediation. An innovative Mn 3 O 4 @ZnO/TiO 2 heterojunction with multi-interface structure was precisely-designed for the first time through alternate growth of ZnO and TiO 2 nanolayers on Mn 3 O 4 surface by atomic layer deposition. Further, the catalytic property of Mn 3 O 4 @ZnO/TiO 2 was evaluated through denitrification from water under ultrasonic-assisted visible light photocatalysis, which achieved 98.6% NO 3 − -N reduction and 98.8% N 2 selectivity within 120 min. Besides, the Mn 3 O 4 @ZnO/TiO 2 exhibited stability and recyclability during the denitrification process. Mechanism insight revealed significant contributions of the novel multi-interface type II heterojunction. More charge transfer routes and possible reaction interfaces were provided for selective denitrification. Equally important, the synergy between visible light and ultrasound promoted the generation of active radicals. The radical trapping experiment proved the dominate role of e − and CO 2 ∙ - in the denitrification process. Overall, the Mn 3 O 4 @ZnO/TiO 2 appeared to be a promising candidate to remediate aquatic contaminants in ultrasonic-assisted photocatalytic system. Also, this study highlighted an attractive approach for controllable fabrication of multi-interface heterojunctions.

In this paper, graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets/titanium dioxide hollow microspheres heterojunctions (g-C 3 N 4 NSs/TiO 2 HMSs) with excellent photocatalytic activity were successfully fabricated by a simple one-step synthesis strategy in the assistance of hydrothermal carbon microspheres. Hydrothermal carbon microspheres act as both dispersant and structure-directing agent for the simultaneous construction of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets and titanium dioxide hollow microspheres. The synergistic photocatalytic effects in the 4-fluorophenol/hexavalent chromium [4-FP/Cr(VI)] and hexavalent chromium/trivalent arsenic [Cr(VI)/As(III)] multi-component composite pollution systems were studied by using as-prepared g-C 3 N 4 NSs/TiO 2 HMSs under different pH conditions. Interestingly, the efficiencies of 4-FP degradation, Cr(VI) reduction, and As(III) oxidation were simultaneously improved in the 4-FP/Cr(VI) and Cr(VI)/As(III) multi-component synergistic photocatalytic systems relative to the single-component photocatalytic systems. The synergistic photocatalytic mechanisms in the 4-FP/Cr(VI) and Cr(VI)/As(III) multi-component synergistic photocatalytic systems were systematically discussed.

Tetracycline (TC), a widely detected aquatic pollutant, poses significant ecological risks, necessitating the development of effective remediation strategies. Photocatalytic degradation, which converts TC into harmless CO 2 and H 2 O, offers a promising eco-friendly solution. This study successfully synthesized a novel 2D/3D g-C 3 N 5 /BiVO 4 (N-CN/BiVO 4 ) S-scheme heterojunction via a hydrothermal method. The optimized 5 % N-CN/BiVO 4 exhibited exceptional performance in activating the Fe 2+ /PMS system under visible light, achieving a 96.8 % TC removal efficiency with an apparent rate constant 4.4 times higher than that of BiVO 4 . Mechanistic studies, including ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VB-XPS), confirmed the S-scheme interfacial charge transfer pathway. Furthermore, radical quenching experiments revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity originated from the synergistic contribution of multiple reactive species ( OH, SO 4 − , O 2 − , h + , and 1 O 2 ), validating both the efficient activation of Fe 2+ /PMS and the proposed S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. This work presents an innovative approach for high-performance pollutant degradation by coupling an S-scheme heterojunction with the Fe 2+ /PMS activation system.
