Effects of a semi-bio-based triazine derivative on intumescent flame-retardant polypropylene

Xinjun Wang,Zongbao Wang,Juan Li

A semi-bio-based synergist ( N , N ′, N ″-1, 3, 5-triazine-2, 4, 6-triyltris-glycine [TTG]) was prepared by using glycine and cyanuric chloride. The structure of TTG was characterized by 1 H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The TTG was applied in polypropylene (PP)/intumescent flame-retardant compounds to improve its flame retardancy. The flame-retardant properties of PP compounds were evaluated by limiting oxygen index and vertical burning tests (UL-94). The results showed that 17 wt% intumescent flame-retardant and 1 wt% TTG makes PP achieve the UL-94 V-0 rating without drippings, and the limiting oxygen index value is increased to 29.5 vol%. The thermal degradation behavior and char morphology of PP compounds were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that TTG accelerates the formation of char layer, regulates the porous structure of char layer, and enhances its barrier property. Therefore, the temperatures of PP compound after two ignitions during the UL-94 test are decreased significantly as shown in infrared thermal imaging. In addition, the combustion characteristics of PP compounds were investigated by cone calorimeter. The peak of heat release rate (PHRR) of PP compound is 67% reduced, and the t PHRR is delayed from 223 to 430 seconds, indicates that the combustion risk of PP compound is reduced.

Selective recovery of lithium from simulated brine using different organic synergist

Huifang Li,Lijuan Li,Xiaowu Peng,Lianmin Ji,Wu Li

The organic synergists, including Octanol, ethyl acetate (EA), butyl acetate (BA), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), diisobutyl ketone (DIBK), N , N -bis(2-ethylhexyl) acetamide (N523) and 8-hydroxylquiolate, were added to the TBP–FeCl 3 extraction system to extract lithium from brine. The effects of concentration of organic synergist and total organic extractant, molar ratio of Fe/Li, phase ratio, counter-current extraction and the acidity of stripping agent on lithium extraction were investigated to optimize the extraction conditions. Under the optimize conditions, the results of counter-current extraction showed the mixed extraction system was the preponderance on the lithium extraction. Especially the separation of lithium in organic phase and aqueous phase and the separation mass ratio of Mg/Li increased greatly. An extraction mechanism was proposed based on the analysis of FT-IR spectra and Raman spectra.

Controlling the Hydrolysis and Loss of Nitrogen Fertilizer (Urea) by using a Nanocomposite Favors Plant Growth

Linglin Zhou,Pan Zhao,Yu Chi,Dongfang Wang,Pan Wang,Ning Liu,Dongqing Cai,Zhengyan Wu,Naiqin Zhong

Graphical Let it grow : A network-structured nanocomposite is fabricated and used as an excellent fertilizer synergist (FS), which could effectively inhibit the hydrolysis, reduce the loss, and enhance the utilization efficiency of nitrogen and thus decrease nonpoint agricultural pollution. The FS, which has high biosafety, exerted positive effects on the expression of nitrogen-uptake-related genes, ion flux in maize roots, crop growth, microbial communities, and organic matter in soil. Urea tends to be hydrolyzed by urease and then migrate into the environment, which results in a low utilization efficiency and severe environmental contamination. To solve this problem, a network-structured nanocomposite (sodium humate–attapulgite–polyacrylamide) was fabricated and used as an excellent fertilizer synergist (FS) that could effectively inhibit the hydrolysis, reduce the loss, and enhance the utilization efficiency of nitrogen. Additionally, the FS exerted significant positive effects on the expression of several nitrogen-uptake-related genes, ion flux in maize roots, the growth of crops, and the organic matter in soil. The FS could modify the microbial community in the soil and increase the number of bacteria involved in nitrogen metabolism, organic matter degradation, the iron cycle, and photosynthesis. Importantly, this technology displayed a high biosafety and has a great potential to reduce nonpoint agricultural pollution. Therefore, this work provides a promising approach to manage nitrogen and to promote the sustainable development of agriculture and the environment.

Experimental Study of Tumor Therapy Mediated by Multimodal Imaging Based on a Biological Targeting Synergistic Agent

Yaotai Wang,Chun Chen,Yong Luo,Jie Xiong,Yu Tang,Haiyan Yang,Lu Wang,Fujie Jiang,Xuan Gao,Die Xu,Huanan Li,Qi Wang,Jianzhong Zou

Purpose The high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of tumors is inseparable from synergistic agents and image monitoring, but the existing synergistic agents have the defects of poor targeting and a single imaging mode, which limits the therapeutic effects of HIFU. The construction of a multifunctional biological targeting synergistic agent with high biosafety, multimodal imaging and targeting therapeutic performance has great significance for combating cancer. Methods Multifunctional biological targeting synergistic agent consisting of Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum), ICG and PFH coloaded cationic lipid nanoparticles (CL-ICG-PFH-NPs) were constructed for targeting multimode imaging, synergistic effects with HIFU and imaging-guided ablation of tumors, which was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. Results Both in vitro and in vivo systematical studies validated that the biological targeting synergistic agent can simultaneously achieve tumor-biotargeted multimodal imaging, HIFU synergism and multimodal image monitoring in HIFU therapy. Importantly, the electrostatic adsorption method and the targeting of B. longum to tumor tissues allow the CL-ICG-PFH-NPs to be retained in the tumor tissue, achieve the targeting ability of synergistic agent. Multimodal imaging chose the best treatment time according to the distribution of nanoparticles in the body to guide the efficient and effective treatment of HIFU. CL-ICG-PFH-NPs could serve as a phase change agent and form microbubbles that can facilitate HIFU ablation by mechanical effects, acoustic streaming and shear stress. This lays a foundation for the imaging and treatment of tumors. Conclusion In this work, a biological targeting synergistic agent was successfully constructed with good stability and physicochemical properties. This biological targeting synergistic agent can not only provide information for early diagnosis of tumors but also realize multimodal imaging monitoring during HIFU ablation simultaneously with HIFU treatment, which improves the shortcomings of HIFU treatment and has broad application prospects.

Synergism of Ethers on the Kinetic Inhibition Performance of Poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) on Methane Hydrate in a Pilot-Scale Flow Loop

Yin-de Zhang,Xiao-dong Shen,Nobuo Maeda

The kinetic inhibition of methane hydrate by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with two ether synergists was studied in a pilot-scale flow loop. An isothermal (273.15 K) and isobaric (6 MPa) experimental method was adopted, and the two ether synergists were 2-phenoxyethanol (EPH) and butyldiglycol (DGBE). We mainly focused on the growth kinetics of methane hydrate, and it was characterized from the consumption of methane gas with time. It was found that methane hydrate mainly formed in the bulk of the solutions when the inhibitors were present, and the appearance of the formed methane hydrate slurry was murky. In contrast, methane hydrate preferred to appear on the wet wall of the flow loop and on the liquid surface when the inhibitors were absent. These results reflect the fact that PVP, like most KHIs, is surface active. EPH was demonstrated to be a good synergist of PVP as it could significantly decrease the growth rate of methane hydrate whereas DGBE was found to be detrimental to the inhibition performance of PVP. Methane hydrate formed in the 1 wt % PVP + 1 wt % DGBE solution was prone to blockage of the flow loop. It was proposed that the adsorption and steric effects of EPH and PVP may play a role in the inhibition of methane hydrate in such a flow loop.

Confined Construction of Ultrasmall Molybdenum Disulfide-Loaded Porous Silica Particles for Efficient Tumor Therapy

Chunya Song,Qiqi Sun,Limei Qin,Meiwan Chen,Yongsheng Li,Dechao Niu

Recently, molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) has shown great application potential in tumor treatment because of its good photothermal properties. Unfortunately, most of the current molybdenum disulfide-based nanotherapeutic agents suffer from complex preparation processes, low photothermal conversion efficiencies, and poor structural/compositional regulation. To address these issues, in this paper, a facile “confined solvothermal” method is proposed to construct an MoS2-loaded porous silica nanosystem (designated as MoS2@P–hSiO2). The maximum photothermal efficiency of 79.5% of molybdenum-based materials reported in the literature at present was obtained due to the ultrasmall MoS2 nanoclusters and the rich porous channels. Furthermore, both in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the cascade hybrid system (MoS2/GOD@P–hSiO2) after efficient loading of glucose oxidase (GOD) displayed a significant tumor-suppressive effect and good biosafety through the combined effects of photothermal and enzyme-mediated cascade catalytic therapy. Consequently, this hybrid porous network system combining the in situ solvothermal strategy of inorganic functional components and the efficient encapsulation of organic enzyme macromolecules can provide a new pathway to construct synergistic agents for the efficient and safe treatment of tumors.

The molecular chain’s length effect of alcohol and ether for synergistic enhancement with novel kinetic hydrate inhibitors in hydrate inhibition

Xue Zou,Mucong Zi,Kai Liu,Tiantian Wu,Daoyi Chen

The formation of gas hydrates within pipelines can lead to safety hazards and economic losses. Present researches mainly focus on enhancing the performance of kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs), particularly regarding the synergistic impacts of improved synergists. This study investigated the nucleation and growth process of gas hydrate in the presence of KHI and each of the 20 alcohol-ether synergists, and the ‘molecular chain’s length effect’ was proposed to summarize the synergistic effect of alcohol-ether synergists on the inhibition performance of KHI. The molecular chain’s length effect refers to (i) the synergistic effect of the alcohol/ether on KHI was enhanced and then weakened with the increase of the carbon chain’s length, because the hydrophobicity of the alcohol/ether increases with its carbon chain’s length, which further influence the stretching of the KHI’s polymer chain and contribute to the improved overall inhibition performance. (ii) For the alcohol or ether with the same the length of the carbon chain, the synergistic effect for KHI was enhanced with using binary alcohol/ethers than mono alcohol/ethers. This might be due to the stronger hydrogen bonding adsorption for binary alcohols than for mono alcohols based on the Raman spectroscopy analysis. On the other hand, Zeta potential analysis suggested that KHI and binary ethers possess better neutralization and aggregation. Furthermore, the best-compounded solution of KHI and alcohol-ether synergist exhibited significant inhibition performance on hydrate formation, since the hydrate volume fraction after 12-h hydrate formation was below 0.1 % at a subcooling degree of 15 K and maintained below 4.8 % at the ultra-high subcooling degree of 18 K, respectively. Overall results highlighted the ‘molecular chain’s length effect’ to interpret the interactions between KHI and alcohol-ether synergists, which can provide theoretical support for the deep understanding of KHIs’ inhibition mechanism, and optimization method for the KHI-synergist into real application.

Preparation of a novel Fe-MOF as the flame retardant synergist and its application in polystyrene

Xiaodong Jin,Xinyi Wu,Qinyong Liu,Shibing Sun,Suping Cui,Sheng Zhang,Chen Chen

In this work, a metal organic framework (Fe-MOF) with the effect of absorbing toxic gases and good compatibility was synthesized by chelating a novel organic ligand contained carbonization groups (reacted by tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and 1,4-piperazine dialdehyde) with iron salt. Then, it was used as the synergist to improve the efficiency of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) within polystyrene (PS) substrate. With the addition of 20% IFR and 2% Fe-MOF, the obtained PS composites exhibited a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 28.3% and a UL rating of V-0. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), and total smoke production (TSP) of PS composites were decreased by 77.6%, 35.2%, and 33.7%, respectively. According to the mechanism analysis, it was found that Fe-MOF mainly acted in the condensed phase, contributing to the existence of dense char residues with the presence of IFR system. In addition, the good compatibility of organic ligand in Fe-MOF with PS substrate could partially alleviate the deterioration of mechanical properties due to the addition of IFR. For PS-20%IFR/2%Fe-MOF, the impact strength was improved from 1.7 kJ/m 2 (PS-22%IFR) to 2.2 kJ/m 2 , the tensile strength was also increased from 21.3 MPa (PS-22%IFR) to 22.4 MPa.

Liposomes-mediated enhanced antitumor effect of docetaxel with BRD4-PROTAC as synergist for breast cancer chemotherapy/immunotherapy

Xixi Chen,Fang Li,Binghui Cui,Qingyi Yan,Caisheng Qiu,Zengyan Zhu,Lijuan Wen,Weiliang Chen

It has been reported that proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) can effectively degrade intracellular oncogenic proteins, providing an ideal strategy for cancer treatment. ARV825, a bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4)-PROTAC, has demonstrated the capacity to enhance the antitumor effect of the classic chemotherapeutic agent docetaxel (DTX). However, there are three major challenges to the broader in vivo application of ARV825: poor solubility, poor permeability, and off-target effects. Additionally, the efficient co-delivery of ARV825 and DTX to tumor tissues for a synergistic therapeutic effect remains unresolved. In this study, liposomes were utilized as co-delivery vehicles for ARV825 and DTX to effectively address these issues. The well-established liposomes significantly improved the solubility of both ARV825 and DTX while maintaining a sustained release profile in blood-mimetic conditions. The co-loaded liposomes accumulated in tumor tissues via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. After internalization, ARV825 effectively degraded intracellular BRD4 proteins and downregulated the expression of both Bcl-2 and PD-L1 proteins, thereby increasing tumor cell apoptosis and enhancing the tumor immune response. This, in turn, augmented the antitumor effect of DTX in vivo without undesired side effects. In conclusion, BRD4-PROTAC may serve as a promising synergistic agent alongside the conventional chemotherapeutic agent DTX, with liposomes functioning as effective co-delivery vehicles.
