Owing to inadequate interface contact between carbon and aluminum, enhancing the Al/C interface is crucial for the fabrication of high-performance Al matrix composites. This study selected polyvinyl butyral (PVB) with excellent dispersion properties as the carbon source, simultaneously introducing silver to achieve synergistic reinforcement between silver and carbon in Al matrix composites, offering a novel reinforcement approach for Al matrix composites. The Al–16Ag–C composite is fabricated through the in situ pyrolysis of PVB followed by hot-pressing sintering. Subsequently, the effect of temperature on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the composite is investigated. Microstructural characterization demonstrates the formation of two alloy phases, namely Ag 2 Al and Al 4 C 3 , within the Al–16Ag–C composite. The alloy phases, distributed at the grain boundaries, enhance the material’s strength by impeding dislocation motion, increasing dislocation density within the matrix, and limiting grain growth. The Al–16Ag–C composite, sintered at 630 °C, exhibits a remarkable ultimate tensile strength of 481 MPa and an elongation of 16.84%, representing a significant enhancement compared to pure Al.

The incorporation of micro- and nano-sized SiC particles (micro- & nano-SiCps) into Al matrix constituted the micro- & nano-SiCp/Al composites through powder metallurgy . A unique ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure with micro-SiCps distributed among Al grains and most of nano-SiCps dispersed in grain interiors is characterized. Based on this, the synergetic constraint of dual-scale reinforcements on deformation of Al matrix is employed to enhance dislocation accumulation through increased SiCp/Al interface area and Orowan pinning effect, resulting in an improved strain hardening capacity. Compared with 10 vol% micro-SiCp/Al composites, the composites with 1 vol% nano-SiCps and 9 vol% micro-SiCps exhibit notable tensile properties of 285 MPa in yield strength , 374.7 MPa in ultimate strength and 11.3% in total elongation, increased by 32.6%, 28.7% and 37.8%, respectively, while remain a comparable Young's modulus of 94.6 GPa. Theoretical analysis proves that the dominant strengthening mechanism in micro- & nano-SiCp/Al composites is dislocation strengthening, different from the load transfer in individual micro-SiCp/Al composites. Our work provides inspirations for fabricating high-modulus Al matrix composites with simultaneously enhanced strength and ductility.

In metal matrix composites, it is commonly a hard task to achieve synergistic strengthening and toughening effects between two-dimensional graphene and zero-dimensional nanoparticles (NPs) reinforcements due to their huge dimensional gap. Herein, we developed an in-situ solid-state reaction method to incorporate graphene nanosheets (GNSs) and WC 1-x NPs into copper matrix. It was proved for the first time by thermodynamics and crystallography calculations that the unusual γ-WC 1-x phase can be generated from the solid reaction and maintain stable at room temperature. Thanks to the unique distribution types of WC 1-x , i.e. intergranular or intragranular distribution while other parts anchored on the surface of the GNSs, Orowan strengthening and load transfer strengthening were simultaneously achieved in the composites. Meanwhile, the thermal conductivity was also measured to be equal to that of pure Cu, exhibiting a promising prospect in applications as advanced multifunctional structural materials.

Graphene oxide (GO) has become an important reinforcing phase in metal matrix composites due to its excellent mechanical and thermal properties. However, existing studies have predominantly focused on traditional alloys or high-entropy alloys, while significant gaps remain in the investigation of synergistic strengthening mechanisms of GO and microforming behavior in medium-entropy alloys. In this article, FeCoNi/GO nanocomposites are fabricated through composite pulsed electrodeposition. GO can be efficiently incorporated into the FeCoNi medium-entropy alloy matrix, which not only markedly refines the matrix grains, effectively suppressing the excessive growth of grains during high-temperature stretching and thereby enhancing the plasticity of the composites, but also impedes the dislocation movement during the deformation process, leading to the formation of dislocation plugging and the improvement of the mechanical properties of the composites. The experimental results indicate that a moderate addition of GO can augment the tensile strength of the material up to 1657 MPa at room temperature, the elongation up to 93% at high temperature, and the maximum depth-to-diameter ratio of the microformed parts up to 0.404. This work provides a new synergistic strengthening strategy of “medium-entropy alloys + nanoreinforcing phases” for material design of microdevices in fields such as aerospace and biomedical engineering.

Al powder is prone to oxidation, which can introduce impurities in powder metallurgy. In this study, Al 2 O 3 nanonetworks were obtained by destroying the oxide layer through Paulse Activated Sintering (PAS). The network and the nano-precipitation enhance the mechanical properties of Al-Cu-O composites. TEM analysis revealed the formation of CuAl 2 and an Al 2 O 3 network at the grain boundaries. The current facilitated the modulation of the intermetallic compound size and the fragmentation of the oxide layer. The current-induced discharge at the particle interfaces generated localized heating. Higher temperature effectively disrupts the oxide layer. The Al 2 O 3 network improved the fracture toughness of the Al-Cu-O composites by passivating crack propagation. Simultaneously, the current reduced the nucleation barrier for precipitation by promoting directional atomic migration. Uniformly dispersed nano-precipitates are conducive to the improvement of strength. This study provides new insights into oxidation-related challenges in Al powder.
