A facile method was developed to endow cotton fabric with remarkable antibacterial and ultraviolet (UV)-protective properties. The flower-like TiO2 micro-nanoparticles were first deposited onto cotton fabric surface via hydrothermal deposition method. Then, the Ag NPs with a high deposition density were evenly formed onto TiO2@cotton surface by sodium hydroxide solution pretreatment and followed by in situ reduction of ANO3. This work focused on the influence of different hydrothermal reaction durations and the concentration of AgNO3 on antibacterial activity against relevant microorganisms in medicine as well as on the UV-blocking property. Ag NPs-loaded TiO2@cotton exhibited high antibacterial activity with an inhibition rate higher than 99% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. Moreover, the as-prepared cotton fabric coated with Ag NPs and TiO2 NPs demonstrated outstanding UV protective ability with a high ultraviolet protection factor value of 56.39. Morphological image of the cells revealed a likely loss of viability as a result of the synergistically biocidal effects of TiO2 and Ag on attached bacteria. These results demonstrate a facile and robust synthesis technology for fabricating multifunctional textiles with a promising biocidal activity against common Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is regarded as one of the worst threats to the environment and global health, and antimicrobial nanomaterials have been increasingly explored to provide solutions for antimicrobial resistance problems. In this paper, mesostructured Zn-doped CeO 2 hollow spheres (ZDCHS) with various Zn/Ce ratios were successfully prepared by a conventional one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method. The ingenious incorporation of Zn playing a vital role in the fabrication of hollow structure of ZDCHS with high specific surface area, and detailed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization confirmed the homogeneous distribution of Zn element across the ZDCHS. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman results indicated that a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies was obtained on the ZDCHS compared to the undoped CeO 2 counterparts. In addition, the in vitro antioxidant properties evaluated toward scavenging DPPH radicals, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals further revealed the enhanced antioxidant activity of ZDCHS derived from the doping with Zn ions. Furthermore, the bacteriostatic assay against Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria showed that the ZDCHS possessed synergistically improved bacteriostatic performance and were more susceptible to S. aureus with a maximal antimicrobial ratio of 99.5 %, which is higher than that of the undoped CeO 2 samples (80.7 %). These results represent a new paradigm to the design of novel hollow-structured materials, highlighting the doping of Zn ions in the lattice structure of CeO 2 provides a feasible means for the preparation of effective antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.

In contemporary times, the waning effectiveness of antibiotics against bacterial infections is progressively giving rise to significant concerns in public health. Although photodynamic technology possesses a potent ability to deactivate bacteria, its non-selective attack on normal cells poses potential side effects. Hence, in this study, a boric acid-substituted phthalocyanine photosensitizer (BAPc) was synthesized, exhibiting remarkable bacterial targeting capability. BAPc was assembled with antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) followed by the integration into polylysine-modified alginate dressing to obtain the product BAPc-CIP@AD-PL. Interestingly, the release of antibacterial agents and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from BAPc-CIP@AD-PL can be triggered by bacteria, thereby eliciting synergistic bactericidal effect and effectively promoting wound healing in bacterial infections. Additionally, the fluorescence of BAPc-CIP@AD-PL can be activated by bacteria, facilitating the recognition of bacterial infections. The construction strategy and application principle of this multifunctional antibacterial dressing provide a novel perspective for the development of intelligent antibacterial therapy.

Dental caries is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. Prevention of secondary caries caused by bacterial infection, endowing dental restorative resin materials with effective resistance to harmful bacteria and microbial invasion, is an important direction in dental material development. In this study, we prepared a polyamino acid derivatives nanocarrier (PLG-g-mPEG) that can encapsulate both amoxicillin and polylysine (PL), which could achieve synergistic and rapid sterilization under acidic conditions. Then we utilized 1% (wt) pH-responsive nanoparticles (PPA NPs) for antimicrobial modification of dental resins. The results showed that the mechanical strength of the modified resin was not significantly different from that of the unmodified resin; the surface hydrophilicity of the modified resin was increased; the rapid and efficient killing of oral bacteria under acidic conditions could be realized. Incorporating PPA NPs into dental resin provides long-term antimicrobial activity for antimicrobial and anti-caries restorations. Furthermore, it can also be used to combine with other dental adhesives, cements, and sealants to achieve potent antimicrobial functionality.

It is still difficult for a single antibacterial modality to realize satisfactory management of bacterial breeding in food preservation. To solve this problem, we developed a photothermal-derived dual-mode synergistic bactericidal konjac glucomannan (KGM)/polycaprolactone (PCL) bilayer film incorporated with quercetin-loaded melanin-like nanoparticles (Q@MNPs). The results showed that the mechanical properties (TS: 29.8 MPa, EAB: 43.1 %), UV shielding properties, and water resistance (WCA: 124.1°, WVP: 3.92 g mm/m 2 day kPa) of KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer films were significantly improved. More importantly, KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer film presented outstanding photothermal inversion and controlled release behavior of Q triggered by near infrared (NIR) radiation, thus contributing to excellent dual-mode synergistic antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus . Meanwhile, the KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer film possessed good biocompatibility and low toxicity. As a proof-of-concept application, we further verified the significant value of film for the preservation of cherry tomatoes. Since KGM-Q@MNPs/PCL bilayer film showed excellent biodegradability, this work will aid the development of sustainable antibacterial food packaging materials.

Bacterial infection is a major impediment towards wound healing and threaten human health worldwide. Traditional antibiotic therapy poses a high risk of inducing bacterial resistance, thus nanomaterial-based synergistic bactericidal strategy as effective alternatives have received tremendous attention. Herein, a NIR/pH-dual responsive nanoplatform was fabricated for synergistic photothermal and chemodynamic therapy (PTT/CDT). Prussian blue (PB) were employed as supporting material, while copper peroxide (CP) were growth in situ on PB surface, resulting in a core-shell structured nanoplatform (designated as PC). PB core served as photothermal/Fenton catalyst dual agents, and CP shell could co-release Cu 2+ and H 2 O 2 under acidic bacterial infection environment, realizing synergistic PTT and H 2 O 2 -releasing CDT. Under NIR irradiation, PC exhibited photothermal-enhanced Fenton-like reaction feature and the hyperthermia facilitated Cu 2+ release, leading to the rapid conversion of H 2 O 2 into toxic •OH to effectively kill Gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), eradicating S. aureus biofilm. Moreover, the released Cu 2+ could improve the bactericidal effect of CDT via the depletion of GSH and significantly promote cell migration. Furthermore, in vivo experiments demonstrated PC with good biocompatibility exhibited robust bactericidal effect and promoted wound healing. Overall, this versatile nanoplatform offered an efficacious and safe antibiotic-free strategy for bacterial infection treatments.

Wounds caused by bacterial infections have become a major challenge in the medical field; however, the overuse of antibiotics has led to increased resistance and bioaccumulation. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an antibacterial agent with excellent antibacterial properties and biosafety. Here, we designed an antibacterial platform that combines photothermal and chemical kinetics therapies. Platinum–cobalt (PtCo) bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were first prepared, and then PtCo@MnO2 nanoflowers were obtained by adding MES buffer solution and KMnO4 to the PtCo bimetallic nanoparticle suspension using ultrasound. When light strikes metal NPs, they can strongly absorb the photon energy, resulting in photothermal properties. In addition, Pt and Co were used as the oxidase mimics, and MnO2 was used as the catalase mimic. In summary, the photothermal capacity of PtCo@MnO2 nanoflowers with rough surfaces can effectively disrupt the permeability of the bacterial cell membranes. Further, by catalyzing H2O2, PtCo@MnO2 nanoflowers can generate large amounts of hydroxyl free radicals, which can damage bacterial cell membranes, proteins, and DNA. In addition, MnO2 can effectively alleviate the hypoxic environment of the bacterially infected areas and activate deep bacteria, thus achieving the goal of complete sterilization. The in vitro and in vivo results showed that PtCo@MnO2 displayed excellent antibacterial properties and good biocompatibility.
