Hole transporting layer (HTL)-free, carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbI 2 Br perovskite solar cells have attracted great attention with suitable band gap, excellent thermal stability, low manufacturing cost and simplified procedure processes. Focusing on issues including energy level match and contact between the carbon electrode and the perovskite layer that limit the device performance, passivation strategies are widely applied on the interfaces within perovskite solar cells. Herein, the effect of synergistic passivation of ethylammonium iodide (EAI) and phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) on all-inorganic perovskite (CsPbI 2 Br) solar cells is studied for the first time. Results indicate that α-/δ-phase heterojunction and localized 2D/3D heterojunction formed on the CsPbI 2 Br film surface tend to reduce the trap density and promotes the energy level gradient arrangement. In addition, EA + ions enter into the lattice and passivate the bulk phase defects of perovskite. As a result, the synergistic passivated devices (active area 0.0706 cm 2 ) exhibit an increased PCE from 11.74% to 13.76% and a high fill factor (FF) of 80.32%, as well as promising long-term stability.

Trap-mediated energy loss in the buried interface with non-exposed feature constitutes one of the serious challenges for achieving high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Inspired by the adhesion mechanism of mussels, herein, three catechol derivatives with functional Lewis base groups, namely 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine (DA) and 3-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (DPPA), were strategically designed. These molecules as interfacial linkers are incorporated into the buried interface between perovskite and SnO 2 surface, achieving bilateral synergetic passivation effect. The crosslinking can produce secondary bonding with the undercoordinated Pb 2+ and Sn 4+ exhibited the best performance and operational stability. Upon the DOPA passivation, a stabilized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.5% was demonstrated for the planar PSCs. After 55 days of room-temperature storage, the unencapsulated devices with the DOPA crosslinker could still maintain 85% of their initial performance in air under relative humidity of ≈15%. This work opens up a new strategy for passivating the buried interfaces of perovskite photovoltaics and also provides important insights into designing defect passivation agents for other perovskite optoelectronic devices, such as light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and lasers.

As compared to the predecessor Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 device, the current efficiency of kesterite Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) solar cells is still much lower mainly due to the known carriers recombination issue within interface and absorber bulk. In contrast to the majority of researches concerning recombination issues that focus on either single absorber bulk or interface passivation strategy, this study is pioneering in constructing synergistic passivation effects (SPE) to address the bulk and interface recombination issue simultaneously. By introducing a novel niobium pentoxide passivation layer into the back electrode interface (BEI), it is identified that SPE can be constructed due to Nb (& O) diffusion from Nb 2 O 5 layer to absorber bulk and BEI during high-temperature selenization. The chemical passivation effect is fulfilled via the intrinsic high resistance characteristic of Nb 2 O 5 layer, and also through the NbO x passivation aiming to absorber bulk benefited from Nb (& O) diffusion. Meanwhile, the occupations of Nb (& O) on the Mo (& Se) sites induce a conduction type inversion in MoSe 2 interfacial layer and create a preferable interface p + -Mo(Se,O) 2 :Nb/CZTSSe, achieving an interfacial field passivation effect. Ultimately, the promoted absorber quality and improved charge carrier transportation from SPE contribute to the boost of device performance beyond 10% efficiency.

The interface between the perovskite and electron-transporting material is often treated for defect passivation to improve the photovoltaic performance of devices. A facile 4-Acetamidobenzoic acid (containing an acetamido, a carboxyl, and a benzene ring)-based molecular synergistic passivation (MSP) strategy is developed here to engineer the SnO x /perovskite interface, in which dense SnO x are prepared using an E-beam evaporation technology while the perovskite is deposited with vacuum flash evaporation deposition method. MSP engineering can synergistically passivate defects at the SnO x /perovskite interface by coordinating with Sn 4+ and Pb 2+ with functional group CO in the acetamido and carboxyl. The optimized solar cell devices can achieve the highest efficiency of 22.51% based on E-Beam deposited SnO x and 23.29% based on solution-processed SnO 2 , respectively, accompanied by excellent stability exceeding 3000 h. Further, the self-powered photodetectors exhibit a remarkably low dark current of 5.22 × 10 −9 A cm −2 , a response of 0.53 A W −1 at zero bias, a detection limit of 1.3 × 10 13 Jones, and a linear dynamic range up to 80.4 dB. This work proposes a molecular synergistic passivation strategy to enhance the efficiency and responsivity of solar cells and self-powered photodetectors.
