Improved activity and significant SO2 tolerance of Sb–Pd–V oxides on N-doped TiO2 for CB/NOx synergistic degradation

Guobo Li,Yaping Zhang,Peng Wu,Kai Shen,Shule Zhang,Shipeng Ding

The synergistic degradation of VOCs and NO x that were emitted from the incineration of municipal and medical wastes by a single catalyst is challenging, due to the poor activity at low temperatures, and the SO 2 poisoning on the active sites. Herein, N-doped TiO 2 (N–TiO 2 ) was used as the support for designing a highly efficient and stable catalyst system for CB/NO x synergistic degradation even in the presence of SO 2 . The prepared SbPdV/N–TiO 2 catalyst, which presented excellent activity and tolerance to SO 2 in the CBCO + SCR process, was investigated by a series of characterizations (such as XRD, TPD, XPS, H 2 -TPR and so on) as well as DFT calculations . The electronic structure of the catalyst was effectively modulated after N doping, resulting in effective charge flow between the catalyst surface and gas molecules. More importantly, the adsorption and deposition of sulfur species and reaction transient intermediates on active centers were restrained, while a new N adsorption center for NO x was provided. Abundant adsorption centers and superior redox properties ensured smooth CB/NO x synergistic degradation. The removal of CB mainly follows the L-H mechanism, while NO x elimination follows both E-R and L-H mechanisms. As a result, N doping provides a new approach to develop more advanced anti-SO 2 poisoning CB/NO x synergistic catalytic removal systems for extensive applications.

Synergistic degradation of oxytetracycline and rhodamine B in Cu(II)/peroxymonosulfate process: Two distinct oxidation mechanisms

Jieli Ou,Yiqing Liu,Linyue Zhang,Zhenran Wang,Yuqi Tang,Yongsheng Fu,Dandan Zhao

Although Cu(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process has been successfully applied to degrade varied organic contaminants in water, the slow transformation of Cu(II) to Cu(I) that works only in alkaline conditions retards the treatment efficiency of this process. In this study, a new finding was observed, that is, oxytetraczdycline (OTC) could effectively enhance the degradation of organic pollutants in Cu(II)/PMS process where it was also removed in acidic conditions. With the addition of OTC in Cu(II)/PMS system, 85.5% of rhodamine B (RhB) was degraded in 90 min at pH 4.0, which was far more than that without OTC (36.1%), and simultaneously 98.1% of OTC was eliminated. The added OTC could form OTC-Cu(II) complexes which might powerfully improve the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I), exerting a positive effect on the PMS activation and subsequent degradation of RhB. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments assisted with radical scavenging experiments and Raman spectrum detection results suggested that Cu(III) and hydroxyl radical (HO • ) were the predominant reactive species for RhB degradation, while OTC removal in this system was mainly ascribed to direct PMS oxidation. The Cu(II)/PMS process also showed a promising success on the synergistic degradation of OTC with the other four refractory organic pollutants , indicating the potential application of PMS oxidation in water treatment .

Pulsed discharge plasma induced WO3 catalysis for synergetic degradation of ciprofloxacin in water: Synergetic mechanism and degradation pathway

He Guo,Nan Jiang,Huijuan Wang,Kefeng Shang,Na Lu,Jie Li,Yan Wu

Pulsed discharge plasma (PDP) was adopted to induce WO 3 for synergetic degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in water. WO 3 was firstly characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Photocurrents and Photoluminescence . The degradation results showed that PDP could induce WO 3 photocatalysis successfully, and a synergetic effect was established in PDP/WO 3 system. After 60 min treatment time, 0.16 g/L WO 3 increased the CIP removal from 71.3% to 99.6%, with the enhancement of the first-order kinetic constant from 0.020 min −1 to 0.081 min −1 . Then, the effect of peak voltage, air flow rate and pH on CIP removal was evaluated. Active species trapping test verified that ·OH and ·O 2 − played the major role for plasma-degradation of CIP degradation, whereas OH and h + were conductive to catalytic degrade CIP. WO 3 addition lead to the decline of O 3 and enhancement of OH no matter in deionized water or CIP solution. The degradation process was explored using fluorescence spectrograph , liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and ion chromatography (IC). Finally, the possible degradation pathways of CIP degradation were proposed. The reuse test suggested WO 3 possessed excellent catalytic performance as well as good stability.

Synergistic biodegradation of trichloroethylene-contaminated soil using Typha angustifolia L. and an anaerobic degrading bacterial consortium

Sha Ni,Changsheng Qu,Xinhong Gan,Liang Ding,Weiyi Xia,Ying Teng,Yingge Shu,Wenjie Ren

Plant-microorganism combined bioremediation is a highly efficient and environmentally sustainable method for the remediation of contaminated soils. Despite its potential, the synergistic effects of wetland plants and anaerobic microbial consortium on the removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CAHs) from soil remain inadequately understood. In this study, an anaerobic bacterial consortium, capable of completely dechlorinating trichloroethylene (TCE), was enriched and screened from long-term CAH-contaminated soil. Subsequently, the combined effects of the wetland plant Typha angustifolia L. and the anaerobic bacterial consortium on the removal of TCE from soil were investigated, along with the underlying microbial mechanisms. The results demonstrated that the anaerobic bacterial consortium was able to completely convert 0.5 mM TCE to vinyl chloride (VC) within 7 days, and subsequently degrade VC to ethylene within 48 days. The integration of Typha angustifolia L. with the anaerobic bacterial consortium significantly enhanced both the removal and complete dechlorination of TCE from the soil compared to either treatment alone. Furthermore, this combination substantially increased the diversity and richness of soil bacterial communities, enriched dechlorinating microorganisms, and elevated the relative abundance of dehalogenating enzymes and peroxidases involved in pollutant degradation. In addition, the combination resulted in a more complex soil bacterial community, closer microbial interactions, and a more stable microbial co-occurrence network. This study extends the scope of plant-microorganism combined bioremediation for CAH- contaminated soils.

Construction of Lamellar CoFe-LDHs@MoS2 to Promote Permonosulfate Properties Leading to Effective Photocatalytic Degradation of Norfloxacin

Tao Wu,Xin Ren,Xuesong Zhao

The utilization of the photo catalytic activation of permonosulfate (PMS) for the combined breakdown of pollutants has become a focal point in research. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have a unique layered structure which is conducive to the adsorption and diffusion of reactants, and can provide more active sites for photocatalytic reactions. The anions between the layers can be exchanged with a variety of substances so that specific catalytically active species can be introduced as needed. LDHs themselves have certain catalytic activity, which can produce synergistic catalysis between LDHs and the supported photocatalytic active substances, and further improve the degradation effect of antibiotics. In actual wastewater treatment, LDHs as a catalyst carrier have a good application prospect. However, the poor activation effect is attributed to the low separation efficiency of catalyst carriers and insufficient active sites. In this study, a dual active site system consisting of Co and Fe, known as CoFe-LDHs@MoS2, was developed as a catalyst to facilitate the synergistic degradation of norfloxacin (NOF) by PMS under visible light. The findings demonstrate that the material possesses an effective capacity for the synergistic degradation of NOF. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to assess the impact of different catalysts, PMS dosage, degradation systems (Vis, PMS, or Vis PMS), catalyst dosage, NOF concentration, pH, and cycle times on the degradation performance. The active free radicals, degradation pathways, and intermediate toxicity were elucidated through capture experiments, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectrometer (ESR) analysis, a liquid mass spectrometry (LC-MS) toxicity assessment, and theoretical calculations. This research offers a novel approach for designing catalysts with exposed high activity sites for the effective removal of NOF from environmental water.

Photocatalytic kinetics and cyclic stability of photocatalysts Fe-complex/TiO2 in the synergistic degradation of phenolic pollutants and reduction of Cr(VI)

Guo Tongtong,Yang Shuang,Chen Yunning,Yang Lu,Sun Yingnan,Shang Qingkun

In this paper, the kinetic characteristics and cycle stability of Fe-complex/TiO 2 in the process of degradation of phenolic pollutants and reduction of heavy metal Cr(VI) were studied systematically. First, the structural characteristics and photocatalytic activities of Fe(III)-(8-hydroxyquinoline-5-carboxylic acid)-TiO 2 (Fe-HQC-TiO 2 ) nanoparticle to degrade phenolic pollutants and reduce Cr(VI) simultaneously had been investigated. Compared with the single degradation, the efficiency of synergistic degradation/reduction had been improved and the degradation/reduction rate had been obviously accelerated. In particular, the cyclic stability of Fe-HQC-TiO 2 photocatalyst decreased obviously when it was used to reduce Cr(VI) alone, but it could still keep above 90% after three cycles when it was used for reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of phenol synergistically. Second, to Fe-HQS/TiO 2 nanoparticle or Fe-HQS/TiO 2 nanotube (HQS (8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid)), the synergistic degradation/reduction (2,4-dichlorophenol/Cr(VI)) efficiencies were always greater than those of a single degradation/reduction and the time was greatly reduced. All the results indicated that there were interactions between Cr(VI) and phenol or 2,4-dichlorophenol in the photocatalytic process. The possible mechanism of synergistic accelerated degradation of phenolic compounds and reduction of Cr(VI) was proposed by analyzing and testing the surface characteristics of photocatalyst and the properties of photocatalytic system during the synergistic degradation/reduction.

Synergetic decomposition performance and mechanism of perfluorooctanoic acid in dielectric barrier discharge plasma system with Fe3O4@SiO2-BiOBr magnetic photocatalyst

Li Wang,Lei Sun,Zebin Yu,Yanping Hou,Zhenbo Peng,Fei Yang,Ying Chen,Jun Huang

The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -BiOBr (FSB) magnetic composite was prepared and introduced into the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system as a heterogeneous Fenton-like photocatalyst for synergistic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The FSB was characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Characterization results demonstrated that BiOBr was successfully coated on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 , forming FSB, and it exhibited good UV & visible response. The presence of FSB accelerated PFOA degradation: PFOA removal efficiency and total organic carbon removal from DBD-FSB system increased from 73.5% to 92.9% and 28.9% to 62.5%, respectively, within 60   min under reaction conditions of 20   mg   L −1 PFOA, initial pH 4.28, 100   mg   L −1 FSB and 22   kV peak voltage, as compared with DBD system. Accordingly, defluorination efficiency of PFOA and energy efficiency increased from 21% to 32.8% and 46.39   mg   kW −1 h −1 to 72.47   mg   kW −1 h −1 , respectively. The synergetic mechanism was attributed to the combination of active species such as OH, H 2 O 2 , O 3 , directly generated from the DBD plasma and a great amount of OH generated from Fenton-like reaction initiated by FSB photocatalyst under light irradiation emitted during discharge. The OH and photogenerated holes played essential roles in the mineralization process. Based on the identified intermediates, possible degradation pathways of PFOA in DBD-FSB system were proposed, and PFOA degradation mainly occurred via the pathway of perfluoroalkyl radical pathway.

Synergistic degradation mechanism of chlorobenzene and NOx over the multi-active center catalyst: The role of NO2, Brønsted acidic site, oxygen vacancy

Guobo Li,Kai Shen,Ling Wang,Yaping Zhang,Hongqiang Yang,Peng Wu,Bing Wang,Shule Zhang

Development of an efficient synergistic degradation technology to prevent the emission of chlorinated organics and NO x from industrial sources without forming harmful by–products, is a major challenge in environmental chemistry. The designed multi–active center catalyst (PdV/TiO 2 ) showed excellent CB/NO synergistic removal conversion efficiency and target product selectivity. Experimental and DFT calculation results indicated that Pd was the common center for adsorption of CB, O 2 , NH 3 and NO x molecules. The O vacancies (VO x –1 and TiO x –1 ) generated during the CB ring opening process was conducive to adsorption of reaction gas molecules, accelerating CBCO and NH 3 –SCR reaction. The adsorbed NH 3 species would dissociate H protons to provide Brønsted acidic sites necessary for Cl conversion. O vacancies structure was easier to be restored by reoxidation with the participation of NO 2 . Certain synergistic effect in the removal of CB and NO on the multi–active center catalyst surface was found.

Hydroxyl radicals and reactive chlorine species generation via E+-ozonation process and their contribution for concentrated leachate disposal

Hui Wang,Yanwen Shen,Ziyang Lou,Nanwen Zhu,Haiping Yuan,Chunnan Liu

Concentrated leachate is collected from two-stage anaerobic/aerobic-membrane bioreactor (MBR) and nanofiltration (NF) unit in landfill leachate treatment process and featured with non-biodegradation compounds and high salts content. E + -ozonation process was developed and introduced to deal with concentrated leachate, to make good use of chlorine ions (Cl − ) and the associated O 2 during ozonation process. 74.5% and 69.7% of COD and TOC were removed in E + -ozonation under the optimum conditions with initial pH of 9 and current density of 30 mA∙cm −2 , and the corresponding enhancement factors were 1.36 and 1.13, compared to the sum of the electrolysis and ozonation individual. The co-generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive chlorine species (RCS) made a complementary effect on the degradation of refractory substances presented in concentrated leachate. 10.1% of total COD removal was improved by non-radical RCS generated in situ and 6.5% of total COD removal was achieved by ● OH-enhanced and Cl /ClO -emerged. With the help of electrolysis, the OH quencher of Cl − was converted into non-radical RCS (such as Cl − , ClO − and Cl 2 ) at anode, and the un-reacted O 2 /O 3 was reduced into OH at the cathode simultaneously. E + -ozonation offers a synergetic degradation potential for special wastewater with refractory matters and high Cl − content.

Synergistic enzyme/acid-degradable PCL-based polyurethanes with enhanced biocompatibility and shape memory properties

Meng Wu,Yingying Han,Hui You,Zhiwei Yang,Weihua Xu,Shijing Yan,Fang Wu,Taotao Fan,Jun Du

Addressing conventional polyurethane (PU) challenges including non-renewable resource reliance, recycling difficulties, and demands for functionalization, this study designed an enzymatic and acidic-synergistically degradable PU material with biocompatibility and shape-memory behavior. By incorporating acid-hydrolyzable hexahydrotriazine (HT) units and bio-based isosorbide (ISO) into polycaprolactone (PCL)-based PU chains, crosslinked PCL-PU films with dual degradability were synthesized. By regulating the ratio of ISO units and HT chain extender, the PCL-PU films exhibited superior mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of ∼31.1 MPa and elongation at break of ∼963 %, while maintaining high thermal stability. Thanks to their unique chemical structure, PCL-PU films exhibited superior synergistic degradation properties in both acidic and enzymatic environments. Specifically, they achieved rapid and full breakdown in a phosphoric acid/ethanol solution at room temperature, while exhibiting partial enzymatic degradation (∼28.7 % weight loss after 6 weeks in lipase solution). Furthermore, the PCL-PU films also demonstrated good biocompatibility, and possessed shape-memory functionality, enabling spontaneous recovery to their original shape above 37 °C. This study not only provides a new direction for the sustainable development of PU materials but also lays the foundation for medical materials, flexible sensors, smart wearable devices, adaptive structures, and environmentally friendly biomedical applications.

A novel cobalt-iron bimetallic hydrochar for the degradation of triclosan in the aqueous solution: performance, reusability, and synergistic degradation mechanism

Fei Wang,Xingyu Liu,Chennan Guo,Fei Lian,Zimeng Li,Meiyan Wang,Binbin Sun,Wenling Wu,Hongwen Sun

Low activation performance is a critical issue limiting the practical application of low-cost biochar in the advanced oxidation . Given the high potential of transition metals in the persulfate activation process and abundant oxygen-containing groups of hydrochar , hydrochar derived from cobalt (Co)-modified iron (Fe)-enriched sludge was synthesized and its performance and activation mechanism for the degradation of triclosan were investigated. Co modification significantly altered the morphology of hydrochar, and the increased Co–Fe mass ratios transformed hydrochar from granular to rose-shaped lamellar and then to helical sheet structures. Specific surface area, defect degree, and oxygen-containing groups of hydrochar increased with increasing cobalt-iron mass ratios. The highest removal of triclosan was up to 98% in the hydrochar/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system under a wide range of pHs (3–10) and still remained higher than 90% after four cycles. Both Radical (mainly hydroxyl radical) and nonradical pathways (singlet oxygen and electron transfer) were evidenced to play roles in the triclosan removal. Fe 3+ promoted the regeneration of Co 2+ and realized the efficient circulation of Co 3+ /Co 2+ . A ternary system consisting of electron donor (triclosan)-electron mediator (hydrochar)-electron acceptor (PMS) provided channels for electron transfer . No measurable Co and Fe were released during the reaction, and the toxicity of degradation intermediates was lower than that of triclosan. Beside triclosan, rhodamine B, bisphenol A, sulfamethoxazole, and phenol were also almost degraded completely in this oxidation system. This study provides a promising way for the enhancement of catalytic activity of carbonaceous material.

Synergistic degradation performance of UV/TiO2 photocatalysis and biotrickling filtration inoculated with Aspergillus sp. S1 for gaseous m-xylene

Qingping Du,Zuanjia Zhong,Ting Zhang,Yanbin Xu,Guoqing Zhang,Shangquan Wu,Jiaxin Xu

Background Biotricking filtration (BTF) based on absorption and biodegradation of waste gas by microorganisms in a biofilm can be used to degrade with difficulty hydrophobic volatile pollutants. Photocatalysis is a promising technology for the abatement of gaseous contaminants because of its nonselective oxidation of volatile organic compounds; however, photocatalysis technology has the limitations of high energy consumption and low mineralization efficiency. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of UV/TiO 2 photocatalysis (PCO) pretreatment and BTF in treating gaseous m -xylene. Results BTF incubated with a mold, Aspergillus sp. S1, was acclimated with m -xylene as the sole carbon source. A combined system of PCO with BTF was developed to remove gaseous m -xylene. The results showed that the startup period was shortened by 3 days in the PCO-BTF combined system compared to that with BTF alone. The removal efficiency reached 73% and 91% for the BTF and PCO-BTF systems respectively when the empty bed residence time was extended to 90 s. In addition, PCO-BTF could withstand transient shock loading of m -xylene of 5000 mg m −3 and gradually restore its decontamination performance. Conclusions PCO pretreatment was effective in the enhancement of the removal capacity of BTF for m -xylene. The PCO-BTF system proposed in this study provides an attractive alternative to abate hydrophobic volatile pollutants. The integration of PCO essentially prompted the capability of Aspergillus sp. S1 in the BTF unit, which paves the way for the treatment of gaseous waste at an industrial scale. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).
