The composite or hybrid of organic and inorganic materials is one of the common ways to improve the properties of photoelectric functional materials. Perylene bisimide (PBI) derivatives, as large π-conjugated organic small molecules, are a class of photoelectric functional materials with excellent performance. However, there were few reports on PBIs in the electrochromic field due to the difficulty of film-forming caused by their generally poor solubility. Here, water-soluble PBI derivatives (PDI-COOH and PCl-COOH) were synthesized. The hybrid films (ZnO@PDI-COOH/PCl-COOH) formed by the coordination bond and π–π stacking were prepared via a simple solution immersion method. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray diffraction as well as scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectrometry results further confirmed the formation of hybrid films. At the same time, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical analyses revealed that the films have reversible redox activity and cathodic electrochromic properties, which can change from orange-red to purple. The ZnO@PDI-COOH hybrid film formed by coordination bonds exhibits fast switching times (1.7 s colored time and 2.6 s bleached time), good stability (retain 92.41% contrast after 2400 cycles), a low driving voltage (−0.6–0 V), and a high coloration efficiency (276.14 cm2/C). The corresponding electrochromic devices also have good electrochromic properties. On this basis, a large-area (100 mm × 100 mm) electrochromic display device with fine patterning was fabricated by using the hybrid film, and the device shows excellent reversible electrochromic performance. This idea of constructing organic–inorganic hybrid materials with coordination bonds provides an effective, energy-saving, and green method, which is expected to promote the large-scale and fine production of electrochromic materials.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a promising biodegradable and biocompatible polymer material. However, the large number of hydrogen bonds in PVA leads to a contradiction between strengthening and plasticization, which limits its widespread application. To address this challenge, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin, was adopted as a biobased reinforcing agent for PVA. The simultaneous reinforcement and toughening of PVA by lignin were achieved through the construction of interfacial coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of coordination-reinforced lignin/vanillin-modified PVA (VPVA) composites reached 101 MPa and 1694 MPa, respectively. The thermal processing window of the composites increased from 25.5 °C to 100.5 °C, which provided a potential in thermal processing. Besides, dense hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds conferred good self-healing and water recovery properties onto the composites. Interestingly, the incorporation of lignin also endowed the composites with good photothermal conversion capabilities, making the composites suitable for indoor thermal management. Under simulated solar irradiation of 200 mW/cm 2 , the composites could reduce the indoor temperature rise by 8 °C. This work presents a novel approach for effectively enhancing the comprehensive performance of lignin/PVA composites by coordination bonds, and also presents a pioneering investigation for the high-value utilization of lignin.

For the first time, the coordination-based energy sacrificial bonds have been constructed in the interface between lignin and polyolefin elastomer for preparing a new class of high performance thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) with biomass lignin as the hard plastic phase. The coordination bonds not only promoted the dispersion of lignin, but also improved the interfacial interactions between lignin and polyolefin elastomer matrix, and also facilitated the orientation of chain segments during stretching. The synergistic coordination effect of lignin promoted higher energy dissipation, leading to simultaneously enhanced strength and toughness of lignin-based TPEs even with the lignin loading as high as 30 wt %. The lignin-based TPEs also exhibited excellent shape memory performance. Our strategy offers a promising methodology for the facile production of high performance but cost-effective TPE materials using biorenewable resources as plastic phase.

Living tissues span a remarkable spectrum of modulus ranging from the level of Pa to GPa in a water-rich environment. Constructing soft and hard materials that match the mechanics of tissues and researching mechanical transition in water, are beneficial for their biological applications. Here, using polyelectrolyte complex fiber as a model system and reinforcing the fiber by stepwisely introducing additional coordination and covalent bonds, this investigated that the water effect on mechanical transition behaviors. Alginate/chitosan fiber (AC fiber) has a single electrostatic bond and shows continuous mechanical transition containing a glassy state, rubbery state, and terminal relaxation (initial modulus lower than 10 MPa) in aqueous solution. Alginate/chitosan/calcium fiber (ACC fiber) has both electrostatic and coordination bonds, which shows the behavior of hard rubber (initial modulus 100 MPa) when water reaches equilibrium. Alginate/chitosan/calcium/polydopamine fiber (ACCP fiber) with triple bonds, including electrostatic, coordination, and covalent bonds, exhibits the behavior like ductile plastics in aqueous solution (initial modulus 1000 MPa). This work not only provides important insight into the toughening mechanism of polyelectrolyte complexes in water but also contributes to the preparation of tissue adaptive implantations.

Investigating the conversion of various kinds of weak interactions on protein surfaces may provide new insights in developing rational drugs. Herein, conversion from coordination bonds to electrostatic interactions occurring on the cysteine self-assembled monolayer (Cys SAM), a simplified protein surface, was investigated using scanning electrochemical microscopy (secm). On the Cys SAM electrode surface, the coordination bonds between Cys and copper (Cu [II]) were characterized by positive feedback. With the introduction of aspartic acid (Asp) on the electrode surface, the trend of positive feedback declined until it eventually presented negative feedback, indicating the conversion from the original coordination bonds to electrostatic interactions formed by Cys and Asp. This conversion phenomenon was driven by a higher binding affinity between Cys and Asp than between Cys and Cu (II). The conversion ratio was assessed to be about 89 %, based on the changes of the integral area of the Cu (II) reduction peak presented by cyclic voltammetry. Moreover, the binding specificity of Asp in electrostatic interaction with Cys compared to the other three amino acids was deemed to be structural matching. This work may facilitate the comprehension of the underlying mechanism of conversion phenomena on the biological surface at a molecular level.

Electronic textile represents the future of wearable electronics, offering unparalleled permeability and comfort, and holding immense promise for next-generation sensing, communication and smart functionalities. A critical enabler of these capabilities is the integration of stretchable, stable and customizable circuits. However, achieving high-resolution, seamlessly integrated circuits with robust electrical and mechanical performance directly on textiles remains a formidable challenge. Here, we introduce a novel photopatterning strategy for high-resolution, stretchable textile circuits based on surface-modified liquid metal nanoparticles. Our approach uniquely leverages coordination bonding between photopolymerizable monomers and the native oxide layer of liquid metal, enabling the nanoparticles to actively participate in photopolymerization. The process forms a crosslinked polymer network that not only allows for precise microscale patterning but also significantly enhances the electromechanical stability of the circuits. The resulting textile circuits exhibit a resolution of 100 µm, stretchability of up to 200% with minimal resistance change (Δ R < 0.1), and durability against repeated mechanical deformations including stretching, bending, and twisting. Moreover, they demonstrate environmental robustness, maintaining stable performance across varying humidity and temperatures, and even enduring practical scenarios such as washing, pressing, wrinkling and ironing. With this integrated strategy, a stretchable textile sensing system is developed as a breathable healthcare wristband for prolonged and irritation-free healthcare monitoring. By combining chemical design with photopatterning precision, this work establishes a versatile and scalable platform for the fabrication of advanced textile electronics.
