Conductive hydrogels based on MXene have gained more attention due to the excellent conductive property and biocompatibility. At present, they have great potential in electronic skins, personally healthcare monitoring and human motion sensing. However, MXene are prone to be oxidized due to the abundant hydroxyls , which results in the unstable conductive property of hydrogel. To improve the shortcoming, conductive PAA/PAM/MXene/TA hydrogel was prepared, in which the introduction of TA can prevent MXene from oxidation owing to the great deal of pyrogallol groups. Mechanical tests showed that the tensile strength , toughness and elongation at break of PAA/PAM/MXene/TA hydrogel are 0.251 ± 0.05 MPa, 0.895 ± 0.16 MJ/m 3 and 560.82 ± 19.56%, respectively, indicating the hydrogel possess good stretchability. In addition, the MXene and TA were introduced into hydrogel through hydrogen bonds , which endow the hydrogel with good restorability and self-healing property. Resistance variation-strain curves demonstrated that the introduction of MXene endue the hydrogel with appreciable sensing performances. Moreover, in vitro cytotoxicity assay indicated that the hydrogel has good biocompatibility. In conclusion, PAA/PAM/MXene/TA hydrogel has great potential in flexible wearable sensor field.

ABSTRACT During the application of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), protein adsorption on the membrane not only leads to a decline in the efficiency of gas exchange but also triggers a series of adverse effects and even blood coagulation. Herein, we provide the hydrophilic and low-surface-energy strategy to prepare a fouling-resistance and fouling-release membrane for ECMO. Polyvinylimide (PEI) was grafted with tannic acid (TA) on the PES membrane to form a hydrophilic coating, on which fluorinated small molecules with low surface energy were subsequently grafted by ring-opening reaction to form low-surface-energy domains. The hydrophilic coating resists fouling adhesion by forming hydration layers, while the low surface energy of the hydrophobic domains facilitates the release of pollutants. Moreover, the introduction of the hydrophobic domains facilitates gas-liquid exchange in the ECMO-simulated environment. After PBS rinsing, BSA and BFG removal improved by 97.81% and 227.83%, respectively. Finally, in our ECMO-simulated gas-liquid circulation detection device, the modified membrane exhibits excellent gas exchange properties (The O 2 and CO 2 exchange rates reach 123.37 and 168.52 mL·min -1 ·m -2 , respectively) and is resistant to plasma leakage. This study provides a new surface modification anti-fouling strategy with simultaneous enhancement of hemocompatibility and gas exchange efficiency.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) draw great concern due to increased demand for urinary catheters in hospitalization. Encrustation caused by urinary pathogens, especially Proteus mirabilis, results in blocking of the catheter lumen and further infections. In this study, a facile and low-cost surface modification strategy of urinary catheters was developed using one-step coordination of tannic acid (TA) and copper ions. The copper content of the coating could be manipulated by the number of TA–Cu (TC) layers, and the coating released copper in a pH-responsive manner. The coating exhibited high antibacterial efficiency (killed >99% of planktonic bacteria, and reduced biofilm coverage to <1% after 24 h) due to the synergistic antimicrobial effect of TA and copper ions. In vivo study with a rabbit model indicated that with two TC layers, the coated catheter could effectively inhibit bacterial growth in urine and colonization on the surface, and reduce encrustation formation. In addition, the TC-coated catheter exhibited better tissue compatibility compared to the unmodified catheter, probably due to the antibacterial performance of the coating. Such a straightforward coating strategy with good in vitro and in vivo antibacterial properties and biocompatibility holds great promise for combating CAUTIs in clinical practice.

The synergistic antibacterial effect of photothermal and drug treatments is a promising therapeutic method for treating the persistent bacterial infection of chronic wounds. In this study, we used electrospinning to fabricate functionalized poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofiber membranes as antibacterial wound dressings after incorporating tannic acid (TA) and ferric ion (Fe 3+ ). The abilities of pH-responsive controlled release TA and the photothermal effect of the membrane were obtained by introducing the TA/Fe 3+ complexes. Additionally, the membrane had a defined nanofibrous network structure, excellent mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, and water uptake ability. While the controlled release of TA endowed the membrane with high antibacterial properties at different pH values, the antibacterial ratio was further enhanced by approximately 10% under the photothermal synergistic effect. These results indicate that the PCL/TA/Fe 3+ nanofiber membranes could be regarded as an ideal candidate for treating bacterial infection of chronic wounds.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) have been widely studied as treatment alternatives to anbiotics to avoid the occurrence of bacterial resistance because of their negligible bacterial resistance and high antibacterial efficiencies. Herein, we developed an infection microenvironment-responsive nanogel (STF) to successfully achieve a PTT synergized CDT for bacterial infection. Through a one-step/pot method, STF nanotherapeutics consisting of Fe3+/sodium alginate (SA) based nanogels and Fe3+/tannic acid (TA) based metal–phenolic networks (MPNs) were conveniently prepared by the coordination-triggered simultaneous self-assembly of SA, TA, and Fe3+ ions. Afterward, their photothermal and catalytic performances were intensively investigated. Moreover, the sterilization effect of the STF nanogel was evaluated through in vitro and in vivo bactericidal assays. The STF nanogel exhibited a photothermal enhanced peroxidase-like activity because of the good photothermal effect of MPNs. In addition, its Fenton activity was further accelerated by an extra amount of Fe2+ derived from the degradation of Fe3+-chelating agents (SA) and reduction of TA. Together, the STF nanogel possessed a photothermal/Fe2+ dual-augmented catalytic property. In vitro and in vivo antibacterial assays proved its satisfactory bactericidal efficiency owing to PTT/Fe2+ dual-enhanced CDT. Our research findings suggested that the developed intelligent bactericidal nanogel has great potential to be used as an antibiotic alternative to avoid bacterial resistance in future clinical treatments.

The oriented distribution and strong bonding of Fe active sites in multiple metal hydroxides are crucial to modulate activity and stability for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the dispersion and inevitable dissolution of Fe species still need to be addressed through deliberate design. Here, trace amounts of Fe chelated with tannic acid (TA) are precisely anchored to ultrathin Co hydroxides (TF@Co(OH)2-t) through a new anodic interfacial coordination assembly strategy: firstly, the ZIF-67@Co(OH)2 precursor with ultrathin Co(OH)2 nanosheets vertically grown on the shell, provides abundant active sites and sufficient anchoring regions for subsequent TA–Fe coating; secondly, the TA–Fe ligand network quickly and robustly coats the surface of the Co(OH)2via positive potential-driven chronopotentiometry, yielding TF@Co(OH)2-t with good dispersion and controllable Fe species. The TA–Fe network efficiently activates Co species and prevents the dissolution of Fe ions. Physical characterization and DFT simulations reveal that the optimized OER activity with 317 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for TF@Co(OH)2-500 can be attributed to the accelerated electron transfer, increased active sites, and the moderate fall in d-band center levels due to Fe integration. Moreover, prolonged stability is realized benefiting from the robust TA–Fe coating protecting the actives sites.

Wound management is an important issue that places enormous pressure on the physical and mental health of patients, especially in cases of infection, where the increased inflammatory response could lead to severe hypertrophic scars (HSs). In this study, a hydrogel dressing was developed by combining the high strength and toughness, swelling resistance, antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities. The hydrogel matrix was composed of a double network of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and agarose with excellent mechanical properties. Hyperbranched polylysine (HBPL), a highly effective antibacterial cationic polymer, and tannic acid (TA), a strong antioxidant molecule, were added to the hydrogel as functional components. Examination of antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the hydrogel confirmed the full play of the efficacy of HBPL and TA. In the in vivo studies of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, the hydrogel had shown obvious promotion of wound healing, and more profoundly, significant suppression of scar formation. Due to the common raw materials and simple preparation methods, this hydrogel can be mass produced and used for accelerating wound healing while preventing HSs in infected wounds.

Due to the limited self-healing ability of cartilage, cartilage defect repair remains a challenge in clinical treatment. Therefore, there is a need to provide patients with a promising cartilage defect repair strategy. In this study, we have reported an icariin-loaded PVA based biocompatible hydrogel scaffold for cartilage defect repair. The PTGH+Icariin hydrogel was prepared by a simple physical cross-linking method and consisted of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), tannic acid (TA), gelatin (Gel), hyaluronic acid (HA) and icariin. Inspired by the natural cartilage matrix compositions, the Gel and HA were used to improve the bioactivity and biocompatibility of hydrogel. Furthermore, icariin was introduced to further enhance the hydrogel’s ability for cartilage regeneration. The results showed that PTGH+icariin hydrogel exhibited porous microstructures and tough mechanical properties. In vitro cell experiments confirmed PTGH+Icariin hydrogels could promote chondrocytes proliferation, chondrocytes spreading and chondrocytes migration. Meanwhile, the PTGH+Icariin hydrogel demonstrated the ability to promote the cartilage regeneration in a rat cartilage defect model. In particular, the implantation of PTGH+Icariin hydrogel could facilitate the restoration of motor function in rats. This study will provide a potential approach for the treatment of cartilage defects.

The harsh microenvironment of persistent inflammation and insufficient nutrient supply in diabetic organism impedes severely the osteogenic differentiation. Current management on diabetic microenvironment regulation has been focused on glycemic control and eliminating reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is inefficient to modulate the harsh diabetic microenvironment to promote bone regeneration. Herein, a surface-functionalized black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs)-coated ROS-scavenging scaffold was designed for the bone healing in type-2 diabetic rats by contributing to nutrient provision, osteogenesis, and anti-inflammation. The BPNSs/tannic acid (TA) were surface coated with cyclodextrin loaded with simvastatin (SIM)/4-carboxy-2-fluorobenzeneboronic acid (FPBA)-grafted hyperbranched poly- l -lysine (HBPL), which were further modified onto the pore walls of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) scaffold. The BPNSs gradually degraded to release phosphate, which served as an important component of bone, and together with the released SIM, synergistically promoted osteogenesis differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells in a β-glycerophosphate-free medium. The TA and FPBA on the scaffold alleviated the inflammatory environment by ROS depletion and downregulating inflammatory factors, resulting in better bone regeneration in skull defects of diabetic rats in vivo . The remarkable outcomes in vivo verify that the scaffold containing functionalized BPNSs provides an effective strategy for diabetic bone regeneration.

Osteomyelitis induced by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a persistent and deep-seated infection that affects bone tissue. The main challenges in treating osteomyelitis include antibiotic resistance, systemic toxicity, and the need for multiple recurrent surgeries. An ideal therapeutic strategy involves the development of materials that combine physical, chemical, and immunomodulatory synergistic effects. In this work, we prepared injectable microspheres consisting of an interpenetrating network of ionic-cross-linked sodium alginate (SA) and genipin (Gp)-cross-linked gelatin (Gel) incorporated with tannic acid (TA) and copper ions (Cu2+). The Gp-cross-linked Gel acted as a “naturally−derived” photothermal therapy (PTT) agent. The results showed that the microspheres exhibited efficient and rapid bactericidal effects against both S. aureus and Escherichia coli (E. coli) under the irradiation of near-infrared light at 808 nm wavelength; moreover, the release of Cu2+ also induced sustained inhibitory effects against bacteria during the nonirradiation period. The in vitro cell culture results indicated that when combined with PTT, the microspheres could adaptively modulate macrophage M1 and M2 phenotypes in sequence. Additionally, these microspheres were found to enhance the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). In vivo studies conducted in a rat femur osteomyelitis model with bone defects showed that under multiple laser irradiation the microspheres effectively controlled bacterial infection, improved the pathological immune microenvironment, and significantly enhanced the repair and regeneration of bone tissues in the affected area.

For the commercial development of nuclear technology, the isolation of uranyl ions from sea water becomes a strategic key work. However, a major challenge remains in uranium extraction to resist marine biofouling, through suppressing microorganisms' growth and adhesion on the surface of the adsorbent. In this study, by introducing a hydrolyzable tannic acid (TA) cross-linked coating with dynamic surface, we synthesized a self-polishing hybrid zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)/amidoximed polyacrylonitrile (AOP) nanofibrous mat (AOP@ZIF-8/TA) that has durable and outstanding anti-fouling performance. Subsequently, a variety of batch adsorption tests have been undertaken to determine the efficiency of the adsorbent. As a result, the maximum uranium-adsorbing capability of 1387.37 mg/g could be acquired at pH 5.0, and the sorption of uranium was not influenced by other co-existing ions. AOP@ZIF-8/TA mat also showed a long service life with favourable sorption capability after at least 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. Most importantly, the prepared hydrolyzable ZIF-8/TA coatings with zinc-ions-releasing and ROS-producing abilities form a dynamic self-renewing surface and contribute to high resistance to biofouling. After a 25‐day uptake measurement in natural sea water, the uranium sorption equilibrium was reached with the maximal adsorption capability of 11.17 mg·g −1 . Therefore, the self-peeling surface coating has the promise to be used in the production of U(VI)-binding antibiofouling adsorbents in the raw seawater.

Natural gas hydrate (NGH) in marine is usually reserved in the pores or cracks of weakly cemented argillaceous siltstones. Moreover, the hydrates are susceptible to variations in temperature and pressure conditions when water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs) are drilled into hydrate reservoirs, leading to the hydrate in-situ decomposition and severe sand production. In this work, an inexpensive and facilely prepared biomimetic wellbore stabilizer with strong adsorption of multiple hydrogen bonds was prepared by fusing catechol-rich tannic acid (TA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with polyol hydroxyl adsorption function, referred to as TA-PVA complex (TA-PVA). TA-PVA was added to WBDFs to strengthen the NGH reservoir wellbore for ensuring the safety of drilling process in a wide temperature range (2-60℃). The microscopic characterization of TA-PVA and its cohesion mechanism with argillaceous siltstone was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The mechanical properties of skeleton of the artificial hydrate cores were evaluated by compressive strength test, with maximum compressive strength reaching 0.45 MPa. And the adhesion force of TA-PVA to the probe modified by silica microsphere (PSM) was further studied by AFM. Meanwhile, the adhesion forces between TA-PVA and cyclopentane hydrate particles were measured at 1.5℃. Adhesion test results demonstrate that TA-PVA can bond clay particles, quartz sand and hydrate particles together. In detail, the adhesion force between TA-PVA and PSM reaches more than 164.46 mN/m, the adhesion force between TA-PVA droplet and cyclopentane hydrate particle reaches 43.19 mN/m. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)curves demonstrate that TA-PVA releases no heat between 0 and 60 °C, indicating that TA-PVA has no impact on the decomposition of NGH, showing the potential to maintain the integrity of NGH reservoir.
