Ammonia (NH3) is a harmful gas contaminant that is part of the nitrogen cycle in our daily lives. Therefore, highly sensitive ammonia sensors are important for environmental protection and human health. However, it is difficult to detect low concentrations of ammonia (≤50 ppm) using conventional means at room temperature. Tin monoxide (SnO), a member of IV–VI metal monoxides, has attracted much attention due to its low cost, environmental-friendly nature, and higher stability compared with other non-oxide ammonia sensing material like alkaline metal or polymer, which made this material an ideal alternative for ammonia sensor applications. In this work, we fabricated high-sensitive ammonia sensors based on self-assembly SnO nanoshells via a solution method and annealing under 300 °C for 1 h. The as fabricated sensors exhibited the response of 313%, 874%, 2757%, 3116%, and 3757% (∆G/G) under ammonia concentration of 5 ppm, 20 ppm, 50 ppm, 100 ppm, and 200 ppm, respectively. The structure of the nanoshells, which have curved shells that provide shelters for the core and also possess a large surface area, is able to absorb more ammonia molecules, leading to further improvements in the sensitivity. Further, the SnO nanoshells have higher oxygen vacancy densities compared with other metal oxide ammonia sensing materials, enabling it to have higher performance. Additionally, the selectivity of ammonia sensors is also outstanding. We hope this work will provide a reference for the study of similar structures and applications of IV–VI metal monoxides in the gas sensor field. Keywords:tin monoxide;nanoshell;ammonia sensor;solution method

Recently, layered IV–VI metal monochalcogenides have attracted a lot of attention because of their unique properties. Among them, tin monoxide (SnO) has been widely studied as thin films for the application in high-mobility p-channel transistor and photoelectricity device
fabrication. In this work, we successfully synthesized SnO nanoshells through a facile solution chemical method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed the morphology of these nanoshells. The surface chemical composition was investigated
by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Raman and photoluminescence spectra were used to study the optical properties of nanoshells with different sizes, which were formed in different concentrations. We found that the special nanostructure may result in abundant
Sn or O vacancies on the surface of nanoshells, and these defects resulted in a broad photoluminescent signal. This work provided a solution synthesis method to prepare SnO and other IV–VI metal monochalcogenides as well as their promising applications in optical device.

MgH 2 has broad prospects in energy storage applications; however, its poor thermodynamic properties and slow hydrogen absorption and desorption rates are unsuitable for commercial needs. In the present work, TiO@N-C (denoted as TTONC), a highly active catalytic precursor, was employed to improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . The TTONC-catalyzed MgH 2 could uptake hydrogen at room temperature, and the onset dehydrogenation temperature of TTONC-catalyzed MgH 2 was 94 °C lower than that of pristine MgH 2 (∼300 °C). Dehydrogenated TTONC-catalyzed MgH 2 had a capacity retention rate of 95.2% after 50 hydrogen absorption-desorption cycles. The dehydrogenation and hydrogenation apparent activation energies of MgH 2 -TTONC were 90.5 kJ.mol −1 and 52.7 kJ.mol −1 , respectively. The catalytic mechanism analysis revealed that the in situ formed Ti generated TiH 2 in the hydrogenation process, and Ti/TiH 2 acted as a hydrogen pump to diffuse hydrogen atoms in the hydrogen absorption/desorption process. The formation of stable CN layers with carbon structural defects on the surface of MgH 2 inhibited the fragmentation and agglomeration of MgH 2 particles, and they served as nucleation sites to enhance hydrogen diffusion. Hence, the dehydrogenation/hydrogenation properties and cyclic stability of MgH 2 were greatly enhanced by the addition of TTONC.

Tin monoxide is a kind of IV–VI metal monoxides that has attracted great deal of attention due to its wide optical band gap and high field effect mobility in the past decade. On the other hand, nanoshell is a unique porous structure. Its curved shell provides a shelter for the
hollow core, as well as a much bigger special surface area. We in this study systematically prepared SnO nanoshells through a facile self-assembly method under different annealing conditions. The lithium ion batteries were fabricated immediately based on the as prepared nanoshells. The capacity
of as fabricated lithium ion batteries was 559.3 mAhg-1 at rate performance of 0.1 Ag-1 and 497.5 mAhg-1 at 1 Ag-1 in 30th cycle. This work exhibited high application performance of SnO nanoshells. We hope this work will help study similar structure
and applications of IV–VI metal monoxides.

Sodium-ion batteries are attractive alternatives to Li-ion batteries, but typically suffer from slow redox kinetics and short cycle life. These problems arise mainly from the much larger radius of the sodium ion, which results in slow diffusion and causes a large volume change during operation. Using the two-dimensional (2D) sheet form of redox-active materials with an increased number of exposed reactive sites on the surface could mitigate volume expansionwhile improving rate capabilities. Based on our recently developed strategy where we used a physical calendering method to weaken non-van der Waals (vdW) interactions, in this work we demonstrate liquid phase delamination of SnO to enable facile mass production of few-layer sheets. The 2D morphology allowed highly reversible redox reactions due to the greater exposure of Sn atoms. Thus, free-standing films formed from SnO sheets infiltrated with carbon nanotubes as conductive fillers exhibited excellent rate capabilities (620 and 432 mAh g −1 at 115 and 1150 mA g −1 respectively) and long cycle-life performance (77% of the initial capacity after 2000 cycles at 1150 mA g −1 ). Pouch full-cells assembled with Na 0.61 Fe[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.94 cathode successfully powered electronic devices, e.g. light emitting diode lamps, even when bent or folded. This work thus proposes a new way to the mass production of non-vdW SnO sheets and highlights the potential of thinned non-vdW materials for electrochemical energy storage.

The purpose of this study was to prepare amorphous silicon monoxide (SiO) at a low-temperature using a thermoelectric field coupling method. The sample was heated directly by an electric current using silicon (Si) and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) as raw materials. Experimental conditions included a stoichiometric mass ratio of raw materials, 10–13 pct conductive graphite doping, an external electric field of 600 V/cm, a current density of 10.57 A/cm 2 , and a furnace temperature range of 300–480 °C in a vacuum environment. A reddish-brown gas condensate with a Si:SiO 2 atomic fraction ratio of 49.86:50.14 was successfully prepared. The real-time voltage measurements divided the process into four stages. Results showed this method prepared amorphous SiO powder at a lower temperature, reducing furnace temperature by nearly 1000 °C compared to traditional methods, which is significant for lowering crucible temperatures in industrial silicon monoxide production.

Silicon monoxide, a promising silicon-based anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries, has recently attracted much attention for its high theoretical capacity, good cycle stability, low cost, and environmental benignity. Currently, the most critical challenge is to improve its low initial coulombic efficiency and significant volume changes during the charge–discharge processes. Herein, we report a binder-free monolithic electrode structure based on directly encapsulating micro-nano Si/SiOx particles into conjugated nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks to form monolithic, multi-core, cross-linking composite matrices. We utilize micro-nano Si/SiOx reduced by high-energy ball-milling SiO as active materials, and conjugated nitrogen-doped carbon formed by the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile both as binders and conductive agents. Owing to the high electrochemical activity of Si/SiOx and the good mechanical resiliency of conjugated nitrogen-doped carbon backbones, this specific composite structure enhances the utilization efficiency of SiO and accommodates its large volume expansion, as well as its good ionic and electronic conductivity. The annealed Si/SiOx/polyacrylonitrile composite electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, including a high initial reversible capacity (2734 mA h g−1 with 75% coulombic efficiency), stable cycle performance (988 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles), and good rate capability (800 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 rate). Because the composite is naturally abundant and shows such excellent electrochemical performance, it is a promising anode candidate material for lithium-ion batteries. The binder-free monolithic architectural design also provides an effective way to prepare other monolithic electrode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

The expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) plays a pivotal role in enhancing bacterial adaptability and repair mechanisms, posing a challenge for effective antibacterial strategies. To address this, we designed multifunctional Au@mSiO 2 -MnCO/IR780 nanoparticles (NPs) that target key bacterial signaling pathways to suppress HSP expression. Specifically, the system leverages the controlled release of carbon monoxide (CO) to inhibit bacterial perception mechanisms, including the two-component system (TCS), thereby effectively downregulating HSP expression. This inhibition disrupts bacterial adaptability and repair capacity, maintaining the bacteria in a vulnerable state. In this design, Au nanorods serve as highly efficient photothermal agents, while, IR780 generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) and emits fluorescence under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. The generated ROS facilitates the release of CO from MnCO, which directly inhibits bacterial TCS and sigma factor system pathway, significantly reducing the expression of bacterial HSPs. Further, Mn 2+ catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to produce oxygen (O 2 ), alleviating the oxygen-deficient environment at the abscess site and enhancing PDT efficacy. This innovative approach with TCS inhibition highlights the critical role of CO-mediated signaling pathway disruption in suppressing HSP expression, representing a significant advancement in the field of antibacterial therapy.

Silicon monoxide is a promising anode material of lithium-ion battery, but the poor cycling performance caused by volume expansion and inferior electrical conductivity has been criticized. In this work, graphene-like carbon layers coated SiO particles as anode materials were rationally designed and originally prepared via a layer-by-layer strategy, in which the negatively charged SiO particles was firstly covered by a layer of positively charged ferric ions, and then the sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate was adsorbed on the surface of SiO particles due to the electrostatic force. After calcination, the graphene-like carbon layers were formed on the surface of SiO particles under the catalysis of iron by adjusting the amounts of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate. It is demonstrated that the swelling of SiO is inhibited and the electrical conductivity is enhanced by the graphene-like carbon layers. A reversible specific capacity of graphene-like carbon layers coated SiO particles can keep 699 mAh/g at a current density of 1 A/g after 700 cycles with a retention of 85%, which indicates the enhanced capacity and cycling stability of anode materials. This work might open a feasible door to practical applications for silicon monoxide as a good lithium-ion battery anode material.

Due to the high cost of Pt-based materials used in the electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), an alternative composed of non-precious metals is highly desirable. Herein a hybrid with cobalt monoxide nanocrystals spatially confined in holey N-doped carbon nanowires (CoO/NCWs) was synthesized via metal oxide assisted surface pitting of chemical vapor deposited carbon nitrogen nanowires and colloidal assembly. The catalyst consists of a Co2+ enriched surface and delivers a remarkably higher ORR electrocatalytic activity and stability than its surface smooth N-doped carbon nanotube supported counterpart, with a kinetically limited current density (30.3 mA cm−2 at 0.7 V) nearly three times that of the latter. It also outperformed the commercial Pt/C catalyst. As characterized by cyclic voltammetry and XPS, the enlarged interfacial area by spatially confined hybridization is believed to be responsible for the improved ORR performance, which might create more active catalytic sites for the ORR. We propose that in-depth consideration of interfacial construction is essential when designing carbon supported metal oxide catalysts for the ORR in alkaline media.

Silicon monoxide (SiO) is a promising anode material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its higher capacity than graphite and better cycle life than pure silicon. However, the issues of volume changes, low mass loading, and poor conductivity still exist. In this study, an economic battery manufacturing technique is developed to promote the performance of commercial SiO/C-based batteries. A novel triblock copolymer binder was synthesized and used to relieve the volume changes and improve ion transportation. Copper nanowires were adopted in the anode material to improve electrical conductivity. A high mass loading anode with a laminated conductive structure was fabricated by spraying a layer upon layer. The synthesized SiO/C exhibits a high specific capacity retention of 606 mA h g–1 after 200 cycles at a high areal mass loading of 10.26 mg cm–2. Furthermore, under a current density of 1 C (1255 mA g–1), it delivers a reversible rate capacity of 620 mA h g–1. This novel design paves a new way to fabricate high-performance SiO-based anodes for commercial LIB applications.

Silicon monoxide (SiO) holds great potential as a next-generation anode material for commercial lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, poor cycling stability and low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) present substantial challenges for its practical application. Herein, we modified the structure of commercial SiO through ball milling, followed by heating with the addition of the network modifier Li2CO3. The submicrometer-sized SiO reduces Li+ diffusion pathways within the SiO bulk, facilitating the Li+ insertion/extraction process and enabling excellent rate performance. Controlling the size of silicon nanodomains within SiO enhances the structural stability of the material during cycling, thereby significantly improving its cycling stability. The increased crystallinity of SiO2 suppresses irreversible reactions, leading to a higher ICE. Moreover, Li+ ions trapped within the Si–O–Si network form a lithium silicate glass-like phase, which provides efficient pathways for Li+ diffusion within the material, thereby enhancing its electrochemical performance. The optimized submicrometer SiO was mixed with graphite and coated with carbon to produce a submicrometer SiO/graphite@carbon composite anode. When assembled into a half-cell, the composite anode exhibited an initial discharge specific capacity of 1277.0 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1, with an ICE of 74.3%. And this anode demonstrated a capacity retention of 79.7% after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g–1. Furthermore, during rate capability testing, it achieved a discharge specific capacity of 428.9 mA h g–1 at 1.6 A g–1.
