Harvesting water kinetic energy is a prospective way to obtain sustainable power. However, conventional water energy harvesting technologies are restricted by specific operating locations and fabrication materials. These techniques urgently need to be improved and supplemented with new methods. Here, we report a novel and universal single electrode droplet-based electricity generator (SE-DEG) that allows converting water droplet kinetic energy into electricity power on any surfaces of artificial or natural materials such as PTFE , glass, wood, aloe, cicada wing, stone and etc. This functionality is endowed by a special configuration characterized by the location of the electrode on the top of dielectric material rather than underlying as in the conventional triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Such special configuration can effectively harness the triboelectric charges generated without going through the electrostatic induction process between bottom electrode and the surface in the case of TENG. We envision that SE-DEGs represent a new dimension in ability to harvest abundant hydrodynamic energy everywhere.

DNA has been considered as a compelling candidate for digital data storage due to advantages such as high coding density, long retention time, and low energy consumption. Despite many works reported, the development of a DNA-based database of full integration, high efficiency, and practical applicability is still challenging. In this work, we report the synthesis and sequencing of DNA on a single electrode with scalability for an integrated DNA-based data storage system. The synthesis of DNA is based on phosphoramidite chemistry and electrochemical deprotection. The sequencing relies on charge redistribution originated from polymerase-catalyzed primer extension, leading to a measurable current spike. By regeneration of the electrode after sequencing, repeated sequencing can be achieved to improve the accuracy. A SlipChip device is developed to simplify the liquid introduction involved in DNA synthesis and sequencing. As the proof-of-concept experiment, text information is stored in the system and then accurately retrieved.

Advancement in human-machine interface (HMI) is indispensable for development of virtual/augmented reality, robotics control, and artificial intelligence (AI). However, there lack a simple facile electronics to achieve accurate finger motion recognition and remote robot control through simple signal processing. Herein, a wearable patterned single electrode-based triboelectric nanogenerator (PS-TENG) based on regenerated silk film (rSF) is developed for peak-encoded interface, which can accurately identify the handwritten numbers or letters. The patterned single electrode, composed of nine units with five different patterns, is successfully constructed by ink-jet printing Ag inks on the rSF. When handwriting on the PS-TENG, the generated output voltage with different peak amplitude can be transformed into a peak spectrum with spatial information. Handwriting numbers or letters can be accurately identified through simple digitization data processing of the peak-encoded spectrum without complex algorithms. Furthermore, the PS-TENG as peak-encoded interface enables precise game play, accurate pattern lock, and wireless robot control. Importantly, based on relative amplitude of output signals, the peak-encoded code is regardless of factors including absolute amplitude of output signals, sliding speed and environmental humidity. Consequently, the PS-TENG, characterized by self-powered feature, simple structure and straightforward signal processing, demonstrates remarkable identification accuracy of handwritten numbers and letters through decoding unique and stable peak spectrum, which would have great potential in the field of virtual control panels, HMI and AI.

The reuse of waste biomass resources has garnered significant attention in sustainable energy research. The selection of green, natural, and pollution-free biomass materials for preparing triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is a hot research topic. In this work, a low-cost and easy-to-process single-electrode TENG was constructed with Perilla straw and methylcellulose. Under an external force of 40 N and a contact separation frequency of 0.8 Hz, the maximum open circuit voltage and current are 5.7 V and 199.6 nA, and the charge is 1.86 nC. When the resistance is 150 MΩ, the output power reaches a maximum value of 2160 nW. With the flick of the hand, it can be used for circuit lighting and can light up 80 LED lights. Selecting a single-electrode mode for TENG has advantages in human body sensing. After the movements of the wrist, finger and arm joint, the oscilloscope can clearly identify the motion signals. This flexible TENG is capable of collecting the mechanical energy generated during body movement to achieve self-powering and human sensing, providing new ideas for the high value-added utilization of waste biomass straw.

The utilization of water energy through the Single Electrode Droplet-Based Electricity Generator (SE-DEG) represents a universal and high-efficiency method for water energy harvesting. Previous research has extensively elucidated the working principle of SE-DEG based on bulk effect. However, scant attention has been paid to the investigation of the electrical characteristics surrounding the SE-DEG. Remarkably, the electrical characteristics around the SE-DEG can be exploited to generate electricity and harvest corresponding energy. Here we evaluate the electrical characteristics around the SE-DEG by arranging extra electrodes. An interesting phenomenon is found that, on the premise of no contact between extra electrodes and the droplet, there is opposite electricity output from extra electrodes synchronously when the droplet contacts on the PTFE film and SE-DEG electrode and outputs the electricity. This phenomenon is comprehensively explained and verified from working mechanism, the impacts of different arrangements and the array design of extra electrodes. Significantly, utilizing the electrical characteristics could harvest additional kinetic energy with extra electrodes in SE-DEG. This investigation is expected to provide new insights into the future harnessing of water kinetic energy within the SE-DEG framework.

Rapid advancements in wearable electronics impose the challenge on power supply devices. Herein, a flexible single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (SE-TENG) that enables both human motion sensing and biomechanical energy harvesting is reported. The SE-TENG is fabricated by interpenetrating Ag-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanofibers within a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer. The Ag coating and PDMS are performed as the electrode and dielectric material for the SE-TENG, respectively. The Ag-coated PET nanofibers enlarge the electrode surface area, which is beneficial to increase sensing sensitivity. The flexible SE-TENG sensor shows the capability of outputting alternating electrical signals with an open-circuit voltage up to 50 V and a short-circuit current up to 200 nA in response to externally applied pressure. It is used to sense various types of human motions and harvest electric energy from body motion. The harvested energy can successfully power wearable electronics, such as an electronic watch and light-emitting diode. Therefore, the as-prepared SE-TENG sensor with a pressure response and self-powered capability provides potential applications in wearable sensors or flexible electronics for personal healthcare and human–machine interfaces.

Development of self-powered monoelectrodes for clean energy harvest is a promising solution to meet the growing energy demands for modern electronic device applications. To address this issue, a category of self-powered monoelectrodes are made from cost-effective graphene composite films to harvest rain energy. Periodic current and voltage signals are recorded under rain stimulation to evaluate their rain-to-electricity efficiency. The mechanism behind rain energy harvest arises from charging/discharging cycles of electric π-electron (graphene)|cation (rain) double-layer pseudocapacitances at graphene film/raindrop interface. The maximized current of 2.15 μA/raindrop, voltage of 129.83 μV/raindrop and power of 295.48 pW/raindrop are yielded in the optimized conversion devices. The present work may provide new insights on harvesting waste energies in rain-enriched regions by designing electron-enriched monoelectrodes.

Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (t-TENGs) have attracted extensive attention in wearable power source and movement monitoring. However, the electrical output performance and environmental adaptability of t-TENGs in single-electrode mode are still unsatisfactory, which significantly limits their applications. This limitation is especially more pronounced in humid environments . In the present study, a humidity-resistant and stretchable single-electrode t-TENG (abbreviated as PFL@WFCF-TENG) consisting of the porous flexible layer (PFL) and waterproof flexible conductive fabric (WFCF) has been designed to improve the output performance. Considering the three-dimensional structure and excellent superhydrophobicity of PFL and superior conductivity of WFCF, the resultant PFL@WFCF-TENG (2 × 4 cm 2 area) has high outputs (~135 V, ~7.5 μA, 26 μC/m 2 , 631.5 mW/m 2 ) and favorable humidity-resistant (80% RH). Based on these excellent features, the proposed PFL@WFCF-TENG is expected to be applied for intelligent alarming, haptic sensing, and energy harvesting. Moreover, combined with the microelectronic module, a portable and wearable self-powered haptic controller based on the PFL@WFCF-TENG has been designed for various human–machine interface (HMI) scenarios, such as controlling of the lamp, electronic badge, computer application, and humidifier. The PFL@WFCF-TENG proposed in this study not only provides a feasible solution for developing wearable electronic devices with high electrical output even in high-humidity environments but also shows promising applications in a variety of areas, including wearable power supply, portable computer peripherals, intelligent robots and security systems.

With the rapid development of smart wearable electronics, self-powered devices are urgently needed to overcome the limitations of conventional power sources. The single electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) attracts much attention owing to its simple fabrication, carrying convenience, and easy use as a power source for wearable electronic devices. Herein, a flexible, responsive, and multifunctional single electrode TENG based on renewable chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) and MXene composite film (CM-TENG) is developed. ChNCs act as interfacial adhesives to facilitate the assembly of the MXene nanosheets, which significantly improves the composite film's mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. Positively charged ChNCs neutralize the negative charges of MXene nanosheet surfaces, enabling the composite film to rapidly transfer charges during the electrostatic induction process. The output performance of the CM-TENG can achieve 99.5 mW m −2 power density so it can be utilized for self-powered strain and tactile sensors. This work presents a new strategy for constructing stable and flexible power sources and self-powered sensors via electrostatic-driven self-assembled of ChNCs and MXene, which shows promising application in low frequency mechanical energy harvesting and self-powered wearable electronics.

Accelerated aging of the population has led to an increase in the incidence of orthopedic chronic diseases and acute illness, which has placed a significant burden on the public health and economy. Continuous physiological monitoring and timely rehabilitation interventions represent crucial strategies for early disease detection, functional independence preservation, and healthcare cost containment among elderly individuals. This study proposes a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (PE-TENG) for elderly assistance systems, developed through the integration of a supramolecular conductive hydrogel (PCBC-hydrogel) with a soft Ecoflex layer. The PCBC-hydrogel, engineered from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), chitosan, borate cross-linking, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), serves as an advanced friction electrode material that combines mechanical compliance with stable electrical performance, making it particularly suitable for aging-care applications. The pristine PVA hydrogel showed moderate mechanical properties. Boric acid formed dynamic borate bonds with PVA hydroxyls, enhancing the elasticity and strength. Material characterization reveals that dynamic borate ester bonding between boric acid and PVA hydroxyl groups enhances mechanical resilience, achieving a tensile strength of ∼209 kPa. The introduction of chitosan facilitates additional hydrogen bonding networks, enabling rapid self-recovery within 10 s. Incorporated CNTs provide stable electrical conductivity (0.13 S/m) while reinforcing the hydrogel matrix. The PE-TENG demonstrates reliable operation with a 90 s response time and maintains a consistent performance through 3000 cycles. This design allows for real-time monitoring of physiological signals through mechanoelectrical transduction. The utilization of supramolecular hydrogel TENG-based health monitoring systems, smart home assistance systems, and bionic effector systems enables the real-time monitoring of the physical condition of the elderly, facilitating the promotion of their healthy lifestyles through the monitoring of the home environment and bionic control. This work not only promotes the development of hydrogel-based TENGs and provides another direction for self-powered wearable devices but also establishes a foundation for future smart aging-care systems.

Single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (SE-TENG) is essentially useful when only one triboelectric electrode can connect to external load. Conventional metal electrodes are susceptible to corrosion in open environments characterized by high humidity and acidic or alkaline conditions. Thus, the material used for the triboelectric layer must exhibit robust resistance to environmental acids and alkalis. To achieve this target, advancements have been made to wrap up metal electrodes or substitute it with non-metallic conductive materials. However, the non-metallic conductive materials have not been explored their capabilities of acting as both electrodes and triboelectric layers. In this work, carboxylate cellulose nanofibers (CNF), graphene nanosheets (GN), and citric acid (CA) were utilized to create a conductive nanofiber/graphene (CNF/GN-CA) film with superior acid/alkali resistance. We develop a single-electrode mode TENG named CGC-TENG, in which this CNF/GN-CA worked as both an electrode and a triboelectric material. The CGC-TENG demonstrated stable output over 15,300 cycles and remained stable after 10 h immersion in pH = 1 and pH = 14 solutions, showing superior acid/alkali resistance. Based on the better performance of CNF/GN-CA film with long-term stability, CGC-TENG was demonstrated as a “trigger functional sensor” with rapid response speed (0.35 s) and short recovery time (0.25 s). Thus, the CGC-TENG holds significant promise for applications in human-computer interaction systems under various harsh environmental conditions.
