Graphene oxide enhanced aqueous epoxy composite coating derived from sustainable cardanol resource for corrosion protection

Juan Wang,Peng Du,Jiheng Ding,Jibin Pu,Baosheng Xie

Conventional self-emulsified curing agent mainly focus on its stability, yet the contamination of raw materials are scarcely noted. Herein, a waterborne cardanol-based epoxy resin curing agent with emulsifying function was prepared by using the natural renewable biological material cardanol, and a waterborne biological epoxy resin coating was obtained by curing epoxy resin E51. The dual-functional product was synthesized by a two-process reaction (Mannich reaction and ring-opening reaction), as proved via FTIR and NMR techniques. In the curing process, the long alkyl chain in the curing agent molecule can shield the hydrophilic chain, thus improving the hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance of waterborne epoxy resin coating. With the help of this curing agent, graphene oxide (GO) is further used to improve the barrier effect of waterborne epoxy resin coating. The electrostatic interaction among curing agent, epoxy resin and GO improve the stacking dispersion and compatibility of GO in the coating. When the addition amount was 0.5 wt%, the thermal stability of the coating improved and the defects also reduced. The excellent corrosion resistance of the composite coating was verified by EIS. The results suggest that it is a potential candidate low-volatile organic compounds coatings for extending service life of metallic materials.

Preparation and properties of novel bio-based epoxy resin thermosets from lignin oligomers and cardanol

Guifeng Liu,Can Jin,Shuping Huo,Zhenwu Kong,Fuxiang Chu

A series of lignin-based epoxy resins (LEPs) were prepared by the reaction of epichlorohydrin with lignin oligomers derived from partial reductive depolymerization of lignin. To overcome the high viscosity and brittleness defects in practical applications, the LEPs were blended with renewable epoxied cardanol glycidyl ether (ECGE) and then cured with methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MeTHPA) to form high-performance epoxy thermosets. The effects of degree of lignin depolymerization , chemical composition of lignin oligomers and dosage of ECGE on thermal and mechanical properties of the cured products were investigated. The LEP/MeTHPA thermosets exhibited good thermal and mechanical properties. Especially, by separating monomer-rich fractions from lignin oligomers, the thermal and mechanical properties of the cured product were improved obviously. Notably, the incorporation of ECGE also possessed a positive effect on reinforcing and toughening the cured products. With 20 wt% ECGE loadings, the tensile, flexural and impact strength of the cured product reached the maximum value of 77 MPa, 115 MPa and 14 kJ/m 2 , respectively, which were equivalent to the commercial bisphenol A epoxy resins thermosets. These findings indicated that the novel bio-based epoxy resins from lignin oligomers and cardanol could be utilized as renewable alternatives for BPA epoxy resins.

Selective Hydrogenation of Polyenes in Biomass-Derived Cardanol over the Trimetallic Ni–Co–Cu Catalyst Supported on Morphologically Controlled Alumina

Jie Ding,Zisu Xu,Hongjun Fang,Xinzhen Feng,Weijie Ji

The aim of this study is to achieve a high fraction of monoene in biomass-derived cardanol to manipulate a well-balanced potential of cross-linking and coupling between resin and curing agent for heavy-duty coating. We reported a heterogeneous nonprecious trimetallic catalyst for selective hydrogenation of polyenes in cardanol for the first time. By cointroducing the second and third metal constituents (Cu and Co), and particularly facet controlling as well as Zn doping of Al2O3 substrate, we can accomplish the highly selective hydrogenation of triene/diene into monoene with variable ratio. The larger sized Ni entities with higher electron density on the Al2O3 hexagonal plates are more favorable for activating triene/diene responsible for a high potential of selective hydrogenation. On the other hand, the Ni0 fraction is comparatively lower, while the mean particle size of Ni0 is the smallest with lower electron density on the commercially obtained γ-Al2O3 spherules. The latter kind of Ni entities is more favorable for activating hydrogen to generate highly reactive H species accounting for a strong potential of full hydrogenation. Over a fine-tuned 10% Ni-5% Co-3% Cu/3% Zn-Al2O3-hexagonal plate under the optimized conditions (7.5% cardanol in n-butanol, 2.5 MPa H2, 80 °C, and 3.5 h), as high as 76% monoene can be obtainable. It is worth noting that not only the current catalyst system is more economic but also the reaction becomes kinetically much faster (within 3.5 h). This catalyst system is operational to a large-scale application in the modification of cardanol via selective hydrogenation. Ni–Co–Cu synergism and low-content Zn modification of the Al2O3 (110) facet are essential to achieve the aim of this study.

Synthesis, curing kinetics, mechanical and thermal properties of novel cardanol-based curing agents with thiourea

Zhe Ma,Bing Liao,Kun Wang,Yongqiang Dai,Jianheng Huang,Hao Pang

Two new flexible cardanol-based epoxy curing agents with cross-linkable thiourea groups ([2-(2-amino-ethylamino)-ethyl]-thiourea of modified cardanol and [2-(2-amino-ethylamino)-ethyl]-thiourea of modified cardanol 2,3-dihydroxy propyl ether, ETC and TCP for short, respectively) were synthesized using a Mannich reaction. The structure of the prepared curing agents was analyzed by a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The curing kinetics of ETC (or TCP) cured diglycidyl ether of biphenyl A (DGEBA) epoxy resins was investigated using the Kissinger, Flynn–Wall–Ozawa and Crane methods by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermal properties of the cured epoxy resins were evaluated with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and DSC. The morphology and mechanical properties of the cured epoxy resins were also studied. The results showed that the epoxy curing agents had a high-reactivity and a low-viscosity, especially at low temperatures. The activation energy of ETC/DGEBA and TCP/DGEBA calculated by the Kissinger method were 53.6 and 60.5 kJ mol−1, respectively. The toughness of the cured epoxy resin was noticeably improved by the introduction of two new flexible curing agents. The glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased with the introduction of cardanol-based curing agents in an epoxy resin system. In addition, the cured epoxy materials exhibited good mechanical properties.

Novel Hydroxylated Cardanol Quaternary Ammonium Salts from Renewable Resource and its Synergistic Vesicles of Binary and Ternary Composite System in Detergent

Xuehua Zhao,Jinge Lv,Limin Wang,Jianwei Han

A series of novel hydroxylated cardanol quaternary ammonium salts (HCQAS 3a–3g) with one or two hydroxyl groups, derived from renewable cardanol, a plant-based and low-cost material natural cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), have been rationally designed and investigated as additive in detergent. CMC, γ CMC , C 20 , pC 20 , and CMC/C 20 were employed to exhibit the surface properties of HCQAS, reflecting that the surfactivity were superior to general cationic surfactants. In addition, HCQAS revealed excellent water solubility and wettability by krafft point and contact angle tests. Moreover, emulsifiability and foamability conversions were monitored versus time and volume of foam, respectively. Also, TEM micrographs were taken to provide the aggregation morphologies of HCQAS 3a aqueous solution at different concentration. Furthermore, HCQAS 3a and BGF-10 binary composite system as well as HCQAS 3a, BGF-10, and SDBS ternary composite system were investigated by CMC, γ CMC , emulsifiability, and foamability to determine the optimum molar ratio (HCQAS 3a: BGF-10: SDBS = 0.24:0.36:0.4), and then, analysis of morphology by TEM showed that the incorporation of HCQAS 3a, BGF-10, and SDBS in aqueous solution accelerated the formation of abundant vesicles with large volume and surface area. Finally, a green concentrated detergent was designed and prepared with the filtered ratio, where the presence of vesicles greatly enhanced detergency to promisingly replace the familiar use of petroleum-based TX-10 in detergent. This study on the structure and performance of HCQAS may shed some light on the development of novel environmentally friendly surfactant.

Production, thermal recycling, and application of cardanol-based polyurethane foam with phenol-carbamate bonds

Baozheng Zhao,Fei Song,Li Tan,Rui Yang,Zheng Pan,Meng Zhang,Yonghong Zhou

The economic processing, sustainable recycling, and environmentally friendly application of polyurethane (PU) foams are important issues that need to be addressed urgently. In this study, we propose a strategy for the comprehensive utilization of cardanol and cashew shells to design cardanol-based PU (CPU) foams and wood-plastic films that can be recycled and reused. Firstly, cardanol-based polyphenols (CBPs) with a phenolic hydroxyl content of 3.29 mmol/g were prepared by Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction using cardanol and guaiacol as raw materials. Subsequently, CPU foams were prepared by reacting CBPs with isocyanate, and the vertical and parallel compressive strengths could reach up to 0.27 MPa and 0.32 MPa, respectively, when the addition of CBPs was 80 %. These CPU foams, containing dynamic phenol-carbamate bonds, could be hot-pressed into transparent and smooth CPU films with tensile strengths of up to 30.5 MPa and could be re-formed at least three times. Finally, CPU foam and cashew shell waste were mixed and hot-pressed to produce a green wood-plastic composite with a tensile strength of up to 38.8 MPa. The resulting CPU-Wood films could be repaired or reshaped at least five times (38.0 MPa and 38.1 MPa) and could be formed into various shapes. This research paves the way for large-scale industrial production of recyclable and regenerative bio-based foams, making effective use of waste materials to achieve environmentally friendly production processes.

Preparation and properties of UV-curable multi-arms cardanol-based acrylates

Jingcheng Liu,Ren Liu,Xiaopeng Zhang,Zhiquan Li,Hongtao Tang,Xiaoya Liu

A series of multi-arms cardanol-based acrylates (CGHA, CDHA, CTHA) were synthesized using renewable cardanols and bio-based polyols (glycerol, diglycerol, tripilyglycerol) as precursors. The structures and molecular weights of the cardanol-based acrylates were characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and GPC , respectively. The synthesized multi-arms cardanol-based acrylates were used to produce UV-curable films and coatings. High mechanical strength as well as good biodegradability of the UV-cured films was obtained. The important coating film properties, such as hardness, gloss and adhesion were also investigated. The results showed that the coatings with high bio-based content exhibit good adhesion, gloss and acid-resistance, which is comparable to the soybean oil (AESO)-based and polyester acrylate.

Amphiphilic Janus cotton gauze with enhanced moisture management and blood coagulation for rapid hemostasis and wound healing

Yan Fang,Yicheng Zhang,Liping Qiu,Yuxia Zhang,Siqi Chen,Yunxiang Weng,Haiqing Liu,Qinhui Chen

Cotton gauze is commonly used in initial emergency care. However, its high hydrophilicity and limited clotting capacity can lead to the excessive absorption of blood, resulting in unnecessary blood loss . Herein, an amphiphilic Janus cotton gauze with excellent moisture management and enhanced blood coagulation has been developed via in situ generating bioactive glass (BG) onto the cotton gauze (CG), and then attaching cardanol (CA) onto one side of the BG-loaded CG (CG@BG) via click reaction. The Janus gauze (CA-CG@BG) has asymmetric wetting properties with a hydrophilic side (CA-CG@BG HL ) and a hydrophobic side ( HB CA-CG@BG). When applied to hemostatic , the porous and active BG on CA-CG@BG HL can rapidly initiate coagulation cascade to form a robust thrombus . CA on HB CA-CG@BG can entangled with each other, creating a hydrophobic barrier that prevents blood from flowing out. The hemostatic performance of CA-CG@BG is superior to that of CG in both rats and pigs . Interestingly, CA-CG@BG possesses unidirectional exudate removal. When applied to wound healing , the exudate can penetrate the hydrophobic HB CA-CG@BG to the hydrophilic CA-CG@BG HL , resulting in faster wound healing than CG. CA-CG@BG exhibits excellent cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility . This unique Janus dressing shows promise as a potential material for clinical applications in the future.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cardanol-Based Methacrylate Oligomers for Three-Dimensional Printing Resins

Shaoyun Chen,Yongqiang Luo,Yihao Xu,Yanyu Zheng,Xiaoying Liu,Rui Wang,Bo Qu,Dongxian Zhuo

A novel bio-based prepolymer methacrylate cardan phenolic polycondensate (MCPP) was successfully synthesized via prepolymerization and methacrylation of cardanol. Its chemical structure was determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. MCPP-based three-dimensional (3D) printing resins with excellent coating properties were prepared. The MCPP-based 3D printing resins were cured using digital light processing, while some samples also underwent ultraviolet (UV) postprocessing. MCPP-based 3D-printed products exhibit excellent thermal and mechanical properties, including a glass-transition temperature and thermal stability temperature of 80.2 and 313.0 °C, respectively, along with tensile strength, storage modulus, and hardness values of 38.5 MPa, 5371.8 MPa, and 80.3 HD, respectively. The good performance of the MCPP-based 3D printing resins was attributed to the rigidity of their compact cross-linked structures. This study pioneers a method for the production of photoactive acrylates like cardanol-based methacrylate oligomer resins from renewable, low-cost, aromatic biomass for use in photocurable 3D printing.
