Self-propelling nanomotor made from halloysite and catalysis in Fenton-like reaction

Jian Wang,Yan Zhang,Weikun Ning,Peiping Zhang,Bo Jin,Yan Wang,Wei Zhang,Wenqing Li,Cundi Wei,Shiding Miao

A new class of catalytically self-propelled nanomotors were fabricated by modifying natural clay tubes, halloysite, with randomly distributed particles of MnO 2 and Fe 3 O 4 . The prepared MnO 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs composites were validated to be efficient Fenton catalysts in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Compared to the previous preparation of rolled-up microtubes or other template-assisted syntheses, this strategy has its merits in utilizing clay minerals of abundance, cheap-price, and no complex instruments needed. The nanomotors were able to be prepared on a large scale. The MnO 2 –Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs motors displayed powerful autonomous movement, and a high velocity of up to 380 µm s −1 was achieved in 5.0 wt. % H 2 O 2 solution. For Fenton catalysis of RhB, the removal ratio of 94% dye molecules was obtained within 30 min, which was triply higher than other samples of the nonpropelling sample Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs. The autonomous movement provided adsorptive bubble separation, and the adsorption capacity was greatly enhanced by halloysite. These synergistic effects boosted the removal efficiency of dye molecules. The presence of magnetic MnO 2 –Fe 3 O 4 made these motors move directionally in external magnetic fields and provided a facile recovery for collecting heterogeneous catalysts.

Synergy tetraethylenepentamine and diethanolamine impregnated within silica nanotubes derived from natural halloysite for efficient CO2 capture

Xiaoyu Li,Haoran Li,Xueqi Zhao,Yanrong Zhao,Bo Zhang,Keping Zhao,Kang Peng

Amine-impregnated porous solid adsorbents are promising commercial CO 2 capture adsorbents for CO 2 mitigation due to relatively large CO 2 capacity and high CO 2 selectivity . However, the intrinsic viscosity and aggregation of the polyamine leads to low amine efficiency and greatly limits its further development. In this work, a facile and efficient approach was carried out to manipulate the porosity of natural halloysite (HNTs) support with hollow tubular structure and impregnate mixed-polyamines, i.e., both tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and diethanolamine (DEA) to synergistically enhance CO 2 adsorption capacity , fast adsorption kinetics and thermal/chemical stability compared to the individual supported TEPA and DEA. The effects of the blend amount for TEPA and DEA, adsorption temperature and CO 2 partial pressure on CO 2 adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics were specifically discussed. Due to the auxiliary effect of DEA, the chemical reaction between non-hydroxylated TEPA and CO 2 was altered thus improving amine efficiency and the agglomeration layer between protonated TEPA molecules and carbamate, which existed due to electrostatic interaction when TEPA was loaded alone, was loosened thus improving amine efficiency and adsorption kinetics. Therefore, the maximum CO 2 adsorption capacity of MHNTs loaded with 20 wt% TEPA and 20 wt% DEA was 3.25 mmol/g at 75 °C in the flow of 40 vol% N 2 /60 vol% CO 2 . Compared with loading individual TEPA with multiple amino groups on MHNTs, individual DEA with hydroxyl groups could increase the utilization efficiency of the amino groups of TEPA and ultimately obtain excellent CO 2 capture capacity and adsorption kinetics. The experimental results show that the adsorbents obtained in this study using mixed amine impregnated silica nanotubes derived from natural minerals have a promising application in practical CO 2 capture and separation processes.

Halloysite-Based Nanomotors with Embedded Palladium Nanoparticles for Selective Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation

Jian Wang,Yan Zhang,Yang Xu,Peiping Zhang,Qian Gao,Qing Liang,Wei Zhang,Wenqing Li,Ruifeng Guo,Bo Jin,Shiding Miao

The liquid-phase oxidation benzyl alcohol using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidant is a promising and green strategy for manufacturing aldehydes or/and ketones. Herein palladium (Pd) nanoparticles were impregnated in lumens of halloysite nanotubes by using ionic liquid (1-(2′-hydroxylethyl)-2,3-dimethylimidazolium chloride) as directing agents. On the basis of the asymmetric scroll-like structure of halloysite and the catalytic decomposition ability of Pd toward H2O2, the prepared catalyst (Pd-IL-HNTs) exhibited powerful self-propelled movement at an average speed of 276 ± 35 μm/s in 30.0 wt % H2O2 solution. The specific interaction between nanomotors and benzyl alcohol was observed as a consequence of self-moving behavior and hydrophobic interaction introduced by ionic liquid. With the synergistic coupling of the catalytic ability and powerful movement, Pd-IL-HNTs displayed outstanding catalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation performance. Compared to other nonpropelling catalysts using lamellar clay (montmorillonite and kaolinite) as supports, such HNT-based nanomotors registered superior catalytic performance, and the TOF value of 118.1 h−1 was obtained.

N-doped carbon-coated halloysite nanotubes as cathode materials for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Yaning Du,Yangai Liu,Bing Zhu,Qingyu Zhang,Zhaofeng Tian

The practical application and development of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) remains a serious issue as a consequence of the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). Halloysite (HNT), a clay mineral with a unique hollow tubular structure, is a potential carrier for sulfur. In this work, we employed a strategic approach to modify both inner and outer surfaces of HNT. We synthesized N-doped carbon-coated thin-wall hollow nanotube HNT composites (A 5 HNT@NC), which were subsequently utilized as sulfur carriers in the cathode of LSBs. This method alleviates the shuttle effect of LiPSs and controls the volume expansion of sulfur during charge-discharge. Acid heat treatment reduced Al-O octahedron in HNT, expanding the inner diameter to enhance the loading of sulfur. A 5 HNT@NC, prepared through phase inversion and high-temperature pyrolysis, effectively enhanced the electrical conductivity of thin-walled HNT, facilitating Li + and electron transfer. Meanwhile, the structure of A 5 HNT@NC effectively adapted volume expansion of sulfur, realized high sulfur loading, and provided abundant active sites for anchoring of LiPSs. Moreover, the incorporation of N elements on carbon layer enhanced the ability to catalyze and adsorb LiPSs. Consequently, A 5 HNT@NC/S cathode exhibited high cycle stability and specific capacity. At 0.2 C, it retained high capacity of 619.7 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles, achieving 84.67 % capacity retention. At a higher current density of 0.5 C, A 5 HNT@NC/S cathode also retained specific capacity of 515.0 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles. This work can expand the application of HNT for energy storage, provide inspiring insights into the design of novel sulfur carrier materials for LSBs.

Simultaneous removal of arsenate and arsenite in water using a novel functional halloysite nanotube composite

Yu Jiexuan,Zhang Kegang,Duan Xuelei,Zhao Changxian,Wei Xiaoyang,Guo Qi,Yuan Chun-Gang

This work aims at exploring a novel environment-friendly nanomaterial based on natural clay minerals for arsenic removal in aqueous samples. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were selected as the substrate with Mn oxides loaded on the surface to enhance its arsenic adsorption ability and then grafted onto the SiO 2 -coated Fe 3 O 4 microsphere to get a just enough magnetic performance facilitating the material’s post-treatment. The prepared composite (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs) was extensively characterized by various instruments including Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Batch experiments were carried out to get the optimum test conditions for arsenic adsorption by the composite, including pH, loading amount of Mn oxides, adsorbent dosage, and the co-existing ions. The adsorption of As III and As V on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs were both well fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model revealing the chemisorption between arsenic and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs. The adsorption process of As III and As V were both endothermic and spontaneous displayed by the thermodynamic study. The capacities of the prepared composite are 3.28 mg g −1 for As III and 3.52 mg g −1 for As V , respectively, which are comparable or better than those of many reported materials in the references. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) tests were carried out to access the secondary environmental risk of the composite and showed that it was quite environmentally stable and can be safely disposed. The composite was successfully applied in environmental water samples indicating its great potential applicability in future.

Synthesis and inhibition behavior of acid stimuli-responsive Ca-Na2MoO4-HNTs nanocomposite

Xuteng Xing,Jihui Wang,Wenbin Hu,Qiushi Li,Jing Yuan

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are the natural clay mineral with a tubular structure, which can be used as the nanocontainer for loading corrosion inhibitor . In this work, Na 2 MoO 4 was loaded into HNTs (defined as “Na 2 MoO 4 -HNTs”) through vacuum negative pressure method. In order to control the release rate of Na 2 MoO 4 from Na 2 MoO 4 -HNTs, the insoluble CaMoO 4 complex was introduced at the end of tubes through the interaction between Na 2 MoO 4 and Ca 2+ to obtain Ca-Na 2 MoO 4 -HNTs. The surface morphology was investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the release behavior was determined by UV–vis spectrophotometer . The inhibition behavior of Ca-Na 2 MoO 4 -HNTs for Q235 steel in 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectrum techniques. The results show that Ca-Na 2 MoO 4 -HNTs owns insoluble CaMoO 4 complex capping the end of HNTs, and the total loading capacity of Na 2 MoO 4 is about 14.6%. Moreover, the tunable release of Na 2 MoO 4 can be achieved by controlling the strength of the CaMoO 4 complex stoppers at the end of HNTs, and the release time of Na 2 MoO 4 can be prolonged to more than 600 min. Importantly, the release rate of Na 2 MoO 4 will increase sharply in acid solution, owing to the decomposition of CaMoO 4 complex. In addition, Q235 steel in 3.5% NaCl solution + 1.0 g/L Ca-Na 2 MoO 4 -HNTs exhibits higher inhibition efficiency (60.62% at 24 h) than Q235 steel in 3.5% NaCl solution.

High-strength and physical cross-linked nanocomposite hydrogel with clay nanotubes for strain sensor and dye adsorption application

Keying Feng,Guang-Yu Hung,Xiaohan Yang,Mingxian Liu

A high-strength nanocomposite hydrogel composed with polyacrylamide (PAAm) is fabricated via in-situ free radical polymerization of acrylamide in presence of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and then by ethanol immersing. HNTs act as physical cross-linkers for PAAm chains via hydrogen bonding interactions, while ethanol makes the crosslinking network denser by release of water. The mechanical properties of hydrogels are significantly increased by addition of HNTs and ethanol treatment. The structure of the composite hydrogel was studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Interestingly, the composites hydrogels show good conductivity, which is attributed to the presence of the potassium ion in hydrogel network originated from initiator. Therefore, the composite hydrogels can be applied in strain sensor, which can monitor human activities such as bending and releasing the finger, elbow, knee as well as detecting walking pace with high sensitivity. Moreover, the freeze-dried gels show superior removal efficiency of methylene blue dye from water in short time. This work developed a simple, economical, and practical way to synthesize high-strength nanocomposite hydrogel using natural nanotubes, which shows promising applications in strain sensor and environmental restoration.

Halloysite@Polyaniline Nanoparticles Loaded with the Praseodymium (III) Cation for Improving Active Corrosion Protection of Waterborne Epoxy Coating

Gongwen Tang,Chong Chen,Dongxia Wu,Zhishan Yan,Tingting Ren,Xiangyu Hou,Man Zhao,Shancan Fu,Lihua Fan

The corrosion resistance of the waterborne epoxy coating is poor during long-term service, which greatly limits its widespread application. In this paper, the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were modified by polyaniline (PANI) and then used as nanocontainers to encapsulate the green corrosion inhibitor praseodymium (III) cations (Pr3+), obtaining HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles. A scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis were applied to characterize the formation of PANI and the absorption of Pr3+ cations. The corrosion-inhibiting ability of the HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles for iron sheets and the anticorrosion properties of the nanocomposite coatings were evaluated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. The results indicated that the coating containing HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles exhibited excellent anticorrosion performance. After immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 50 days, its Zf=0.01 Hz value was still as high as 9.4 × 108 Ω cm2. The icorr value was 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of the pure WEP coating. The excellent anticorrosion property of the HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ coating could be attributed to the synergy of three beneficial factors, including evenly distributed nanoparticles, PANI, and Pr3+ cations. This research will provide theoretical and technical support for the development of waterborne coatings with high corrosion resistance.

Juan Chang,Wei Xiao,Ping Liu,Xiaoning Liao,Yangping Wen,Ling Bai,Linjian Li,Mingfang Li

Uric acid (UA), a waste product of purine derivatives catabolism, is one of the main culprits of gout. In this paper, a simple and sensitive method for the simultaneous voltammetric detection of UA and the most common purine derivatives like guanine (G) and adenine (A) in human serum and lettuce samples was successfully realized using glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with the water-processable nanotubular composites consisting of both halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes ( f MWCNTs) that were well dispersed by carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). A water-processable HNTs hybrid nanotubes with f MWCNTs were successfully prepared using CMC assist, and the CMC-HNTs- f MWCNTs composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , cyclic voltammetry and chronocoulometry . CMC-HNTs- f MWCNTs/GCE displayed enhanced electrode stability in water, effective surface area, adhesive property and adsorption capacity, and electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of UA, G and A, which could simultaneously detected three purine derivatives in linear ranges from 1 to 130   μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5   μM for UA, 0.05 to 9   μM with LOD of 0.018   μM for G, and 0.3 to 25   μM with LOD of 0.19   μM for A, respectively. The as-fabricated sensor displayed high sensitivity, low detection limit, good sensing stability, remarkable feasibility, and satisfactory practicality.

Preparation, release and anticorrosion behavior of a multi-corrosion inhibitors-halloysite nanocomposite

Xuteng Xing,Xiaoyang Xu,Jihui Wang,Wenbin Hu

A novel multi-corrosion inhibitors-halloysite nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by stepwise loading 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and benzotriazole (BTA) into halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), then the insoluble Cu-BTA complex was introduced at the end of HNTs (defined as “Cu-BTA-MBT-HNTs”) to control the release rate of MBT and BTA. The prepared Cu-BTA-MBT-HNTs can not only reduce the release rate of MBT and BTA for achieving the sustained release effect, but also an acid-response complex corrosion inhibitors. Moreover, the Q235 steel in 3.5% NaCl + Cu-BTA-MBT-HNTs solution owns high inhibition efficiency. Therefore, the Cu-BTA-MBT-HNTs can be a very promising multi-corrosion inhibitors-halloysite nanocomposite.
