Preparation of High-Performance Zn-Based Catalysts Using Printing and Dyeing Wastewater and Petroleum Coke as a Carrier in Acetylene Acetoxylation

Yuhao Chen,Mengli Li,Zhuang Xu,Guowang Shen,Xugeng Wang,Bin Dai

In this study, novel Zn catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation method using printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW)-modified petroleum coke (petcoke) as a carrier, and they were applied to the acetylene acetoxylation. The pretreated petroleum coke has a high specific surface area which provides sufficient space for the loading of Zn. Calcination further increases catalyst activity, but when calcination temperatures exceed 1000 °C, a significant loss of Zn occurs, resulting in a dramatic decrease in catalyst activity. This enables the conversion of acetic acid up to 85%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that a large amount of N is introduced into PC from PDW, which changes the electron transfer around Zn. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analysis revealed that the nitrogen-doped Zn(OAc)2catalyst enhanced the catalytic activity by modulating the intensity of the catalyzed adsorption of acetic acid and acetylene. This study provides a new way to reuse petroleum coke and printing and dyeing wastewater to support the sustainable development of the vinyl acetate industry. Keywords:wastewater;petroleum coke;vinyl acetate

Efficient adsorptive removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(V) from printing and dyeing wastewater by TiCl4

Chunkai Huang,Zhiquan Xiang,Jincan Huang,Guangbing Liu,Xuemin Yu,Weijing Liu,Haijin Cao

Significant amounts of Sb(III) and Sb(V) are present in printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW), which leads to the detrimental effects on the environment if not treated properly. In this paper, the adsorptive removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) by TiCl 4 derived flocs and the oxidation process were investigated. The results showed that TiCl 4 conducted superior coagulation performance on Sb(III) removal than Sb(V) in terms of dosage, pH range and immunity to interference. When the dosage was 50 mg/L and the final pH was 5.0, the concentration of Sb(III) and Sb(V) was reduced from 2000 μg/L to 100 μg/L and 180 μg/L, respectively. According to the Langmuir model, The adsorption for Sb(III) (74.27 mg/g) by TiCl 4 derived flocs was higher than Sb(V) (68.45 mg/g). The Sb(III) in the solution could partially inhibit the adsorption of Sb(V). It was also observed that the Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V), which was owing to the molecular oxygen during the coagulation and the flocs might act as catalyst. The actual printing and dyeing wastewater treatment experiments results showed that pre-reduction of Sb(V) to Sb(Ⅲ) could considerably improve the total Sb removal from 83 % to 98.8 %. The characterization results, such as zeta potential and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicated that the Sb(Ⅲ) removal was mainly achieved by chemisorption. The Sb(V) removal was mainly dependent on chemisorption and electrostatic adsorption, while the latter contributed more than former. The results of DFT calculations explained the reason for higher removal efficiencies of Sb(III) than Sb(V) in the TiCl 4 coagulation system. This study provides a new idea for the efficient removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) using TiCl 4 in PDW to save the cost in engineering practice.

Mechanism for the synergistic removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(V) from printing and dyeing wastewater by polyferric sulfate

Zhiquan Xiang,Chunkai Huang,Jincan Huang,Yan Yan,Guangbing Liu,Xuemin Yu,Weijing Liu,Haijin Cao,Aozhan Liu

Herein, the synergistic removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(Ⅴ) from wastewater by polymeric ferric sulfate (PFS) and the oxidation process were investigated. The results showed that PFS exhibited superior performance on Sb(Ⅲ) removal in terms of coagulant dosage, applied pH, and anti-interference properties than Sb(V) removal. For the Sb liquid in pure water matrix (Sb=1000 μg/L), when the dose was 60 mg/L and the final pH was 5.0, the independent removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(V) was 95% and 90%, respectively. Meanwhile, Sb(Ⅲ) removal in the PFS coagulation system remained stable within a wider pH range (pH=3–9). Sb(Ⅲ) could be preferentially removed in the solution column and had an inhibitory effect on the adsorption of Sb(V). Sb(Ⅲ) was also partially oxidized to Sb (V) during the coagulation process, which was influenced by the coagulant dosage and the solution pH. The results of the actual printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW) treatment indicated that the pre-reduction of Sb(V) to Sb(Ⅲ) could significantly increase the total Sb removal from 72.0% to 97.5%. The characterization results, such as Zeta potential and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicated that the Sb(Ⅲ) removal by PFS was achieved mainly through chemical adsorption. While the Sb(V) removal was realized by both chemical adsorption and electrostatic adsorption, the electrostatic adsorption contributed more than the chemical adsorption. This study provides a new idea for understanding the synergistic removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(V) using PFS in PDW advanced treatment.

Nitrogen self-doped layered porous Myriophyllum aquaticum biomass–derived biochar activated persulfate to efficiently degrade printing and dyeing wastewater

Yang Xiaofan,Siyu Du,Huo Jiaxu,Naraginti Saraschandra,Zhu Meiqing,Hong Ran,Zhang Xiaoying,Wei Xueyu,Xu Xiaoping,Xie Guanghui,Sun Xiang,Sathishkumar Kuppusamy

Biochar doped with heteroatom-like nitrogen could significantly improve its performance in several environmental applications. However, the preparation requires an additional nitrogen source, which influences its cost-effectiveness and impedes the practical applications. In the present study, the nitrogen self-doped biochar was prepared by using Foxtail algae ( Myriophyllum aquaticum ), which is a typical N-rich wetland plant as the raw material, without any modifications. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the morphology and crystal structure of the material. The biochar prepared at 800 °C (MBC800) was found to have a better porous structure, large specific area (1069.08 m 2 g −1 ), and more elemental N (3.11%). Furthermore, the MBC800 was used in the persulfate-activated degradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7; 400 mgL −1 ), and about 97.42% of the removal rate was observed within 60 min when the MBC800 and PS dosages (MBC800/PS) were at 0.25 gL −1 and 4 gL −1 respectively. The radical trapping results indicated that amongst the free radicals (–OH•, SO 4 •–, O 2 •–) and non-radicals ( 1 O 2 ), the surface-bound hydroxyl radical (–OH•) of biochar played an important role, and the non-radical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) played a dominant role during the AO7degradation. The study namely provides a new way for the exploitation and utilization of Foxtail algae in preparing nitrogen-doped biochar for several environmental remediation applications.

Recycling Iron-Containing Sludges from the Electroflocculation of Printing and Dyeing Wastewater into Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Gang Liu,Yiyao Shen,Peihua Ma,Sijia Zhao,Antoine Bonnefont,Yaokang Lv,Congze Wang,Laurent Ruhlmann,Cheng Zhang

Graphical Wasteful to useful : A series of sludges is produced by using a simple electroflocculation method to deal with industrial printing and dyeing wastewater. The sludges can be directly and effectively made into anodes for Li-ion batteries. The performance of the electrodes can be improved by adding different proportions of super P® conductive carbon black. This strategy not only helps to decrease the cost of waste treatment but also provides a possibility to apply the treatment products in a distributed energy storage device. Iron-containing sludges (DW/Fe) were prepared by the electroflocculation of industrial printing and dyeing wastewater (DW). To investigate the formation process and the properties of the DW/Fe sludges and their application in anode materials in Li-ion batteries, the DW/Fe sludges were compared to three other sludges (MB/Fe, RB/Fe, Ta/Fe) prepared from model solutions that contained either methyl blue (MB), rhodamine B (RB), or tartrazine (Ta). The DW/Fe sludges were calcined at 500 °C under N 2 to form iron oxide/carbon composite C-DW/Fe. The composition and structure of the sludges and the C-DW/Fe composite were analyzed by using FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, thermogravimetric analysis, SEM, TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their performances as anodes of Li-ion batteries were studied by adding different proportions of conductive agent (super P® conductive carbon black). Our results show that the sludges are a complex mixture of Fe 3 O 4 and organic matter. The specific capacity and stability can be improved during the charge–discharge test by increasing the amount of carbon black. Importantly, this improvement is more pronounced on DW/Fe that does not require high-temperature carbonization, which means that the sludges cannot only protect the environment and avoid the waste of resources but also can be used directly and widely in decentralized energy storage devices.

The degradation of printing and dyeing wastewater by manganese-based catalysts

Yuming Tu,Gaoyan Shao,Wenjing Zhang,Jianjie Chen,Yixin Qu,Fan Zhang,Shichao Tian,Zhiyong Zhou,Zhongqi Ren

Printing and dyeing wastewater generally has high pH, high turbidity , poor biodegradability , complex composition, and high chroma, which make it one of the most difficult industrial wastewaters to treat. Herein, heterogeneous ozone oxidation technology is applied to oxidize and degrade printing and dyeing wastewater. A metal oxide catalyst supported on activated carbon (γ-MnO 2 /AC) was prepared by hydrothermal synthetic method and shown to enable synergistic catalysis involving MnO 2 metal sites and N/C sites. A simulated methyl orange solution was used to determine the effects of various preparation and operation parameters. The results confirmed that the γ-MnO 2 /AC catalyst exhibited good chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and reusability. Additionally, γ-MnO 2 /AC demonstrated excellent degradation of the secondary biochemical effluent of printing and dyeing wastewater (COD removal = 72.45% within 120 min). The γ-MnO 2 /AC catalyst was fully characterized, and the mechanism governing its catalytic ozone oxidation process was investigated experimentally.

Electron beam radiation coupled to flocculation for advanced treatment of coking and dyeing wastewater: Performance and synergistic effect

Shizong Wang,Jianlong Wang

Advanced treatment of industrial wastewater is a tough problem in the field of wastewater treatment . In this study, the electron beam radiation coupled to flocculation process was firstly developed and investigated for the advanced treatment of coking and dyeing wastewater. Three different coupled processes were studied, i.e. electron beam radiation followed by flocculation process (EBF), flocculation followed by electron beam radiation process (FEB), and simultaneous electron beam radiation and flocculation process (SEBF). It was found that different processes had various performances in the removal of targeted organic pollutants . For humic acid, FEB with poly aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC) as flocculants showed the best synergistic effect at 10 kGy, in which the removal of humic acid was 95.2%, while SEBF exhibited the inhibition effect under all the conditions. For Rhodamine B, EBF with PAFC had the highest synergistic effect at 10 kGy, in which the removal of Rhodamine B was 87.4%. For phenol , SEBF with PAFC as flocculants showed the highest synergistic effect at 10 kGy, in which the phenol removal was 64.2%. The transformation of organic pollutants, such as the polymerization was the main reason for the synergistic effect of EBF, while the dissolved iron ions and the enhanced oxidation made major contribution to the synergistic effect of FEB, and the structural change of flocculants and the transformation of organic pollutants during the process of electron beam radiation was mainly responsible for the synergistic effect of SEBF. EBF showed better performance in COD removal for actual coking and dyeing wastewater than FEB, indicating that electron beam radiation could promote the flocculation effect. Considering the operation procedure and treatment cost comprehensively, EBF with PAFC is recommended for the advanced treatment of actual coking and dyeing wastewater. This study could provide a novel and effective method for the advanced treatment of industrial wastewater.

Preparation of Mn/Mg/Ce Ternary Ozone Catalyst and Its Mechanism for the Degradation of Printing and Dyeing Wastewater

Zhang Shuai,Ren Huixue,Fu Kaifang,Cheng Wenqing,Wu Daoji,Luo Congwei,Jiang Shengyun,Li Jie,Zhang Mingyue

The printing and dyeing wastewater produced by different dyes, as well as different printing and dyeing processes, have different components. These wastewater have high toxicity, high organic concentration, and deep chromaticity. Ozone catalytic oxidation is a very promising technical method for wastewater treatment. In this paper, Mn/Mg/Ce ternary catalyst was prepared, and the ozone catalytic oxidation treatment of actual and simulated printing and dyeing wastewater was performed to study the performance of four different carrier catalysts, namely, molecular sieve (MS), silica gel (SG), attapulgite (ATP), and nano alumina (Al2O3), by simulated dynamic test. The effects of reaction time, pH, and catalyst dosage on methyl orange degradation were studied. The results showed that under the optimum treatment conditions (120 min, pH 11, and 12.5 g/L catalyst dosage), the degradation rate of methyl orange reached 96% and the removal rate of the chemical oxygen demand of printing and dyeing wastewater reached 48.7%. This study shows that the treatment effect of ozone catalytic oxidation on printing and dyeing wastewater is remarkably improved after catalyst addition. This study provides a new choice of ozone catalyst for the degradation of printing and dyeing wastewaters in the future.

Performance Study of Biomass Carbon-Based Materials in Electrocatalytic Fenton Degradation of Printing and Dyeing Wastewater

Lie Wen,Yan An,Yanhua Lei

Biomass carbon materials exhibit a significant specific surface area, carbon defects, and oxygen-containing functional groups during the electrochemical cathodic oxygen reduction (ORR) process, resulting in an enhanced adsorption–desorption of reaction intermediates (e.g., *OH and *OOH) by the catalyst. In this study, a cost-effective biomass-derived carbon material (HBC-500) was prepared through low-temperature pyrolysis at 500 °C using Spirulina as a precursor for H2O2production. By employing surface engineering modification of the carbon-based material to promote the ORR process’s two-electron selectivity, HBC-500 demonstrated consistent experimental results with the RRDE findings at pH = 5, yielding 238.40 mg·L−1of hydrogen peroxide within a 90 min duration at a current density of 50 mA·cm−2. Furthermore, HBC-500 accomplished over 95% degradation within 30 min at pH = 5 and maintained approximately 91.79% electrocatalytic activity after undergoing five consecutive electrocatalytic cycles lasting 300 min. These results establish HBC-500 biomass carbon material as a highly suitable candidate for H2O2production and Fenton degradation of organic wastewater.

Stable and recyclable straw cellulose-based anion exchanger for sustainable textile dyeing wastewater treatment

Zhaoyong Gao,Benzhi Ju,Bingtao Tang,Wei Ma,Wenbin Niu,Shufen Zhang

Biomass-derived adsorption materials from agricultural wastes, particularly crop straw, have emerged as promising candidates for water treatment owing to their abundant sources, cost-effectiveness, and renewability. Nevertheless, the inherent limitations of raw straw—suboptimal adsorption capacity and organic matter leaching risks—restrict its viability in wastewater remediation. In this study, a straw cellulose-based anion exchanger (SCAE) with enhanced adsorption performance and recyclability was fabricated through alkaline pretreatment and monochlorotriazine-mediated etherification. The di-tertiary amine-based cationic modifier enhances the functional group density on the anion exchanger, while the natural crystalline structure of cellulose maintains the structural stability of the anion exchanger. The optimal adsorption performance can be achieved using only 12.5 % of the straw mass as the modifier. The optimized SCAE retained over 95.4 % mass retention through 15 acid-base washing cycles while demonstrating 265 mg g −1 static adsorption capacity for simulated dye effluents. A desorption efficiency of 97 % was achieved in the adsorption-desorption cycles using a 0.25 wt% NaOH solution. The industrial applicability of SCAE was also evidenced by a 97.7 % chroma reduction in actual printing and dyeing wastewater. Remarkably, dynamic column tests revealed that 50 g SCAE could process 18.1 L simulated effluent per cycle, maintaining 95.6 % performance retention after five cycles. This strategy bridges agricultural waste recycling with advanced water purification technologies, providing a closed-loop solution for industrial dyeing wastewater.

Performance of anoxic and aerobic flocs in anoxic/aerobic-membrane bioreactor (A/O–MBR) for the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW)

Chunkai Huang,Han Zhang,Jincan Huang,Lu Zhang,Siqi Tong,Feng Wang,Guangbing Liu,Xuemin Yu,Haibo Xu,Weijing Liu

This study compared and elucidated the performance and mechanisms of aerobic and anoxic flocs in anoxic/aerobic-membrane bioreactor (A/O–MBR) for the printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW) treatment. The batch experiments were conducted with aerobic and anoxic flocs from our continuous laboratory-scale A/O–MBR for the PDW remediation. A distinct discrepancy between aerobic and anoxic activated sludge flocs for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) removal was demonstrated. Specifically, the aerobic flocs exhibited considerable higher COD removal efficiencies (O1 59.0 %, O2 76.4 %) than the anoxic flocs (A1 56.5 %, A2 61.0 %) owing to the stronger organic biodegradability of aerobic respiration, while anoxic flocs exhibited greater performance on the AOX removal (A1 87.8 %) than aerobic flocs (O1 76.8 %) after 12 h biodegradation due to the greater abundance of AOX degradation relevant gene in anoxic flocs. Meanwhile, the study also revealed that the biodegradation was the principal mechanism for COD removal in PDW, whereas, both biodegradation and biosorption contributed to the AOX removal. This study provides valuable insights into the upgrading and reconstruction of A/O process in PDW treatment plants.

Mayer-bar continuous fabrication of covalent organic framework nanosheet tuned graphene oxide membranes for high-salinity dyeing wastewater recycling

Zhipeng Zhang,Jie Chen,Yan Ke,Xi Du,Xiaoqun Qiu,Liming Zhou,Yugao Zhang,Minghui Qiu,Jing Guo,Xu Jiang,Lu Shao

The treatment and reuse of high-salinity dyeing wastewater remains a critical challenge in the cotton textile industry, where lamellar graphene oxide (GO) membranes show significant potentials but are limited by permselectivity and stability of their channels. Herein, the porous covalent organic framework nanosheets (CONs) incorporated GO (GO/CON) membranes with engineered separation nanochannels were fabricated by a continuous rod-coating strategy using Mayer bars. Specifically, the incorporation of porous TpPa-SO 3 H nanosheets into GO membranes enhanced membrane permeability and dye/salt selectivity, attributed to the introduction of additional porous channels and the strengthened electrostatic properties from CONs. This GO/CON membrane exhibits exceptional durability during continuous cross-flow operations exceeding 300 h in high-salinity dyeing wastewater. Furthermore, the high-salinity permeate was successfully reused for dyeing cotton fabrics, producing textiles with minimal color differences, thereby demonstrating both environmental sustainability and economic viability for practical industrial applications.
