A silicone-modified UV-curable pressure-sensitive adhesive initiated by redox-induced bulk polymerization, exhibiting excellent water resistance and aging resistance

Binzhi Wang,Yuewen Huang,Bin Wang,Ruixiang Zhou,Feng Wang,Hui Liu

In this study, an N, N-dimethyl-p-toluidine/benzoyl peroxide redox initiation system was used to synthesize a series of silicone-modified UV-curable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) via bulk polymerization. The oxidizing and reducing agents were added separately but simultaneously into a mixture of monomers. The impact of varying monomer content on the PSA's properties, as well as the influence of organosilicon incorporation on water and aging resistance, was evaluated through 180° peel strength and initial adhesion tests. The results demonstrated that the PSA without organosilicon modification exhibited a maximum peel strength of 7.21 N/25 mm and an initial adhesion of 8.41 N/25 mm. Although the introduction of the organosilicon structure reduced both peel strength and initial adhesion, it notably improved the PSA's water resistance and aging resistance. Highlights Synthesis without solvent using redox initiator system. UV-cured system to enhance molecular weight and adhesion. Introduction of silane structure to improve water and aging resistance. Adhesion performance testing on different substrates (PET and BOPP).

Design of a tulobuterol patch with improved mechanical properties: effect of transdermal permeation enhancers on the release process of metal ligand-based acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives

Nan Longyi,Song Haoyuan,Wang Haijun,Mi Ru,Wang Xiaoxu,Fang Liang

The aim of this study was to design a tulobuterol (TUL) patch with good penetration behavior and mechanical properties. Particular attention was paid to the effect of transdermal permeation enhancers on the release process of metal ligand-based acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive (AA-NAT/Fe 3+ ). The type and dosage of the enhancers were screened by in vitro transdermal penetration in rat skin. The optimized formulation was evaluated in a pharmacokinetic study in rats. Furthermore, the molecular mechanism by which Azone (AZ) improves the release rate of TUL from AA-NAT/Fe 3+ was investigated by FT-IR, shear strength test, rheological study, and molecular simulation. As a result, the optimized formula using AA-NAT/Fe 3+ showed better mechanical properties compared to commercial products. Meanwhile, the AUC 0-t and C max of the optimized patch were 1045 ± 89 ng/mL·h and 106.8 ± 28.5 ng/mL, respectively, which were not significantly different from those of the commercial product. In addition, AZ increased the mobility of the pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) rather than decreasing the drug-PSA interaction, which was the main factor in enhancing TUL release from the patch. In conclusion, a TUL transdermal drug delivery patch was successfully developed using metal-coordinated PSA, and a reference was provided for the design of metal-coordinated acrylic PSA for transdermal patch delivery applications. Feasibility of Processing Hot-Melt Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive (HMPSA) with Solvent in the Lab

Jing Xue,Jing Wang,Haofei Huang,Ming Wang,Yali Zhang,Lijuan Zhang

Hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) is an environmentally benign adhesive which is typically processed without solvent in industries. However, casting solution method is commonly used for experimental purposes in the lab for convenience. Therefore, seven types of solvent with different polarities, including toluene as the most commonly used solvent, were investigated in this work to study the feasibilities. Quick bond strength and holding power were tested with different types of solvents and different adhesive weight percent in the prepared solutions. Through viscosity measurement, thermal analysis, and compositional analysis, the correlation between the chosen solvents and adhesive performance was further explored. It was found that the differences in the obtained bond strength of HMPSA treated with a variety of solvents were due to physical reasons instead of chemical reactions, and a solvent with similar polarity to toluene (e.g., tetrachloride, octane) should be considered as an option because a similar polymer chain relaxation could be maintained as the original HMPSA without solvent treatment. In this study, the mechanism of choosing toluene as common solvent for HMPSA testing was analyzed, and the feasibility of optional solvents was discussed.Keywords:hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive;solution casting;bond strength;solvent polarity

Preparation and Properties of Dual Cross-Linking Acrylic Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives for Flexible Displays

Ran Zong,Xinli Hu,Shuangyi Liu,Aosheng Zhong,Baoqing Shentu

Aiming to satisfy the requirements of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) for flexible displays, 2-[[[6-[3-(6-methyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-yl)ureido]hexyl]carbamoyl] oxy]ethyl acrylate (Upy-HDI-HEA) was synthesized, and a series of dual cross-linking EHA-co-HEA copolymers with multiple hydrogen bonds were prepared. The effects of the Upy-HDI-HEA content on the EHA-co-HEA copolymers’ chemical structure, thermal properties, viscoelasticity, mechanical properties, and adhesion performance were comprehensively investigated via in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical testing, and adhesion testing. The multiple hydrogen bonds acting as strong physical cross-linking enhance the deformation resistance of EHA-co-HEA copolymers. Moreover, compared to chemical cross-linking, the multiple hydrogen bonds allow for a certain degree of unhindered movement and energy dissipation, which benefits the flexibility and peel resistance of EHA-co-HEA copolymers. Consequently, relatively low storage moduli and glass transition temperatures were observed in all EHA-co-HEA copolymers. Young’s modulus, recovery rate, and cyclic stability of EHA-co-HEA copolymers increase with the rising Upy-HDI-HEA content. Also, the loop tack, 180° peel strength, and shear strength of EHA-co-HEA copolymers significantly improved, showing a better adhesion performance than commercial PSAs.

Optically clear pressure sensitive adhesives with multiple hydrogen bond cross-linking

Kang Shuanghao,Li Tianle,Jiang Han,Fu Ziheng,Gao Renjin,Chen Qinhui,Xia Jianrong

Optically transparent pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) present several challenges. Conventional PSAs typically improve cohesive strength through chemical crosslinking; however, this approach not only reduces adhesion but also diminishes light transmittance. In this study, we explored hydrogen bonding crosslinking as a replacement for conventional chemical crosslinking and successfully synthesized the crosslinker UPyHCBA, which contains UPy units capable of forming self-complementary dimers through quadruple hydrogen bonds. A transparent acrylic PSAs incorporating the UPyHCBA monomer was then synthesized via solution polymerization. By modifying the ratio of UPyHCBA, we thoroughly investigated the impact of multiple hydrogen bonds on the molecular weight distribution, adhesive properties, thermal properties, light transmission, rheological behavior, and photoluminescence spectral properties of a specific optically transparent pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSAs).

Effect of rosin on the antibacterial activity against S.aureus and adhesion properties of UV-curable polyurethane/polysiloxane pressure-sensitive adhesive

Chang-An Xu,Zhencai Qu,Mangeng Lu,Huifa Meng,Yingjie Zhan,Bing Chen,Kun Wu,Jun Shi

Although polyurethane pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) have been widely used, there are still some deficiencies in adhesion and heat resistance . To make up for these shortcomings, rosin is introduced into polyurethane/polysiloxane copolymer to improve its heat resistance and adhesion, while its hydrophobicity is also improved. The vinyl-terminated polyurethane/polysiloxane copolymer is synthesized by a one-pot polymerization method, and finally PSA with different content of rosin is obtained by UV radiation . The effects of rosin on heat resistance, hydrophobicity, viscoelasticity , adhesion and antibacterial of PSA have been studied. The results show that the heat resistance index, the contact angle and the peel strength of PSA are increased by 4%, 31 % and 88 % respectively when rosin content is 6 wt%. In addition, the storage modulus and loss modulus of PSAs enhance with the increase of frequency, and the storage modulus of PSAs is always higher than the loss modulus. All PSAs have good antibacterial properties, with an antibacterial rate above 99.2 %. This will help expand the application of polyurethane/polysiloxane PSA such as food packaging materials.

Efficient utilization of peach gum to prepare UV-responsive peelable pressure-sensitive adhesives for non-destructive fabrication of ultrathin electronics

Ziwei Liu,Shan Chen,Ye Wan,Xin Miao,Qunchao Zhang,Tao Jiang,Cheng Zhang,Xianwu Cao,Tonghui Hao

Restricted by the poor solubility and complex structure, it remains a significant challenge to efficiently convert raw peach gum (RPG), a natural plant gum comprised of polysaccharides, into usable polymer materials. Herein, a novel approach is reported to prepare UV-responsive peelable pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), which are mainly applied in the manufacturing of ultrathin electronics, through efficient utilization of RPG via prior dissolution using the N,N -dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride (DMAc/LiCl) solvent system and later degradation using H 2 O 2 under UV light at room temperature. With sorbitol-based polyurethane acrylate (SPUA) as a UV-curable oligomer, rosin as a tackifier, and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) as a plasticizer, before UV irradiation, the 180° peel strength of the prepared PSAs reached 244.4 N/m. A short period of UV irradiation caused a formed cross-linked network structure inside the PSA and a disruption of the adhesive interface, resulting in a sharp decrease of 180° peel strength to 7.3 N/m to achieve a non-destructive peeling of the adherend electronics from the carrier. This work provides a feasible strategy for efficiently utilizing natural peach gum to prepare bio-based UV-responsive peelable PSAs.

Fabrication of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives containing maleimide for heat-resistant adhesive applications

Zhang Xiaoyong,Liu Huihui,Yue Lipei,Bai Yongping,He Jinmei

In the area of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), acrylic PSAs have been successfully applied in many fields, including self-adhesive tapes, sign labels, carrier-free tapes, double-sided tapes and protective films, but applications of heat-resistant acrylic PSAs are relatively rare. In this study, the thermal stability of acrylic polymer containing maleimide (Mal) functional groups has been investigated. The PSAs were synthesized by acrylic monomers and Mal through copolymerization. The influence of Mal on the viscosity, molecular weight ( M w , M n ), glass transition temperature, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle of acrylic PSAs was also studied. The adhesion performance and thermal stability of acrylic PSAs could be significantly enhanced by increase in Mal content of the synthesized resin. After 3 h of treatment in drying oven at 170 °C, the modified PSAs can be peeled (180°) off from the substrate without residues on substrate surface at room temperature, while the non-modified acrylic PSAs possessed residues after treatment from 110 °C. The maximum 180° peel strength of modified PSA films was 12.7 N/25 mm when the content of Mal was 7.5 wt%.

A semi-interpenetrating network acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive for efficient transdermal application with high cohesion and adhesion

Maojian Li,Yimeng Zhang,Yanan Liu,Guixue Chen,Nanxi Zhao,Chang Liu,Xiang Li,Manli Wang,Jian Song,Zheng Luo

The application of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) in transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDSs) is limited. Insufficient cohesion in TDDS can lead to cold flow, patch displacement, dose inaccuracies, and the ‘dark ring’ phenomenon. To address these issues, we developed a semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) PSA using a 2-hydroxyethylacrylate-modified acrylic copolymer as the linear polymer and poly[tri(propylene glycol) diacrylate] as the cross-linked network. Semi-IPN PSAs have better mechanical properties compared to traditional PSAs. The cohesion of the semi-IPN PSA was 31 times and 1.6 times that of commercially available DURO-TAK®87-2287 and DURO-TAK® 87–4098, respectively, and the cold flow of the semi-IPN PSA was significantly reduced. Furthermore, the semi-IPN PSA adhered to the human forearm for longer time and did not exhibit the ‘dark ring’ phenomenon after removal. When loaded with flurbiprofen, the semi-IPN PSA was found to maintain high levels of drug release and skin permeation amount, and flurbiprofen loading did not affect its superior cohesive performance. In conclusion, the innovative application of the semi-IPN PSA for TDDS showed excellent mechanical properties, effective adhesion to the skin without irritation, and highly effective drug release. These findings indicate that the use of the semi-IPN is both simple and highly effective for TDDS.

Heat resistance of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives based on commercial curing agents and UV/heat curing systems

Xiaoyong Zhang,Jinmei He,Lipei Yue,Yongping Bai,Huihui Liu

The development of adhesive tapes that can be applied at high temperature is a major challenge for pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). To date, the heat resistance of PSAs has not been investigated in sufficient details. In this study, based on the relationship between curing structures and properties, a series of acrylic PSAs with excellent heat resistance were prepared. Commercial zirconium acetylacetonate (ZrACA), desmodur L75 (L75), and N , N , N ′, N ′-tetrakis(2,3-epoxypropyl)- m -xylene-α,α′-diamine (GA240) were employed as heat-curing agents. Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) was used as ultraviolet (UV)-curing agent to form semi-interpenetration polymer network structures after UV exposure. The influences of different curing agents on the thermal stability, adhesion performance, gel fraction, and viscoelastic of PSAs were explored. The results showed that the PSAs cured by L75, GA240, and TMPTA exhibited excellent heat resistance. Especially, when the content of L75 was 1.0 wt %, the PSAs could be peeled off substrate without residues on substrate surface after treatment at 170 °C for 4 h, while the nonmodified acrylic PSAs possessed residues after treatment from 110 °C. The cured PSAs adhesive performance was evaluated showing maximum 180° peel strength of 16.7 N/25 mm comparable to current PSAs. These resulting PSAs showed high heat resistance and they are suitable for a broad range of special fields. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136 , 47310.

Effect of polydopamine-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the thermal stability and conductivity of UV-curable polyurethane/polysiloxane pressure-sensitive adhesives

Chang-An Xu,Zhencai Qu,Huifa Meng,Bing Chen,Xiankun Wu,Xiaohua Cui,Kunxin Wang,Kun Wu,Jun Shi,Mangeng Lu

The conductivity and thermal stability of traditional polymers are generally not ideal, consequently endowing polymer-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with certain conductivity and heat resistance has become a popular design idea. Although multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess good electrical conductivity and thermal stability, their adhesion to the substrate is poor. Inspired by mussel chemistry , polydopamine (PDA) is adopted to modify CNTs to improve their adhesion to substrates. Eventually, polydopamine-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PDA-CNTs) are added into the polyurethane/polysiloxane matrix, and a series of self-adhesive and heat-resistant conductive adhesives are successfully prepared under UV irradiation . As a result, the conductivity and thermal stability of PSAs are refined as expected. Especially when the content of PDA-CNTs is 4 wt%, the conductivity reaches 1.2 × 10 −5  S/cm. Comparing to pure polymer (PUA), the conductivity of PUATS4 is increased by six orders of magnitude. In addition, its heat resistance is also improved, and the carbon residue rate is up to 14.5 wt% at 750 °C. These excellent performances of PSAs will be beneficial to the applications in conductivity and thermal stability in the future.

Siloxane-modified polyacrylate low-residual pressure-sensitive adhesive with high peeling strength

Pengjuan Li,Fuwei Nian,Min Zhang,Minmin Shen,Yongqiang Dai,Hao Pang,Bing Liao

A low-residual siloxane-modified polyacrylate pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) with a high peeling strength was prepared by seeded semicontinuous emulsion polymerization. 3-Glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane was introduced into the acrylic (AC) PSA through a thermal posttreatment method to crosslink with AC. To improve the adhesion properties, a polymeric emulsifier, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid, was introduced into the system with the conventional emulsifier. Several key polymerization conditions, such as the initiator concentration, mass ratio of soft monomer to hard monomer, the content of polymeric emulsifier, and siloxane dosages were examined in detail. Then, the optimal conditions and a proper preparation process were established. The results show that we achieved not only a low repeeling residue with high tack and peeling strength but also excellent properties of high-temperature aging resistance and water resistance. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
