Interfacial C-O covalent bonds improving the piezo-assisted photocatalytic performance of Bi4Ti3O12@Carbon Schottky heterojunction

Kun Zhou,Wei Liu,Peifang Wang,Juan Chen,Huinan Che,Bin Liu,Yanhui Ao

Rational design of piezo-assisted photocatalytic systems for simultaneously efficient ultilization of solar and mechanical energy is promising but still challenging. In this work, a novel Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 @C (BTO@C) Schottky heterojunction with high piezo-assisted photocatalytic performance is rationaly designed, and the degradation reaction rate constant k for RhB reaches 0.092 min −1 in 30 min. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that C-layer is tightly coated on the surface of BTO. Furthermore, C-O covalent bonds , which act as electron transfer channels, are formed at the interface of BTO and C-layer. Meanwhile, the presence of piezoelectric potential field of BTO@C under piezo-assisted photocatalytic conditions further promotes the transfer of photogenerated electrons from BTO to C-layer, which synergistically contributes to the performance enhancement. This work provides a new idea for the design and development of efficient piezo-assisted photocatalytic materials.

Interface-Engineered CuxO@Bi2MoO6 Heterojunctions to Inhibit Piezoelectric Screening Effect and Promote Double-Nanozyme Catalysis for Antibacterial Treatment

Guiyuan Zhang,Sumei He,Junwu Wei,Pan Ran,Huan Zheng,Long He,Xiaohong Li

Sonodynamic therapy is confronted with the low acoustic efficiency of sonosensitizers, and nanozymes are accompanied by intrinsic low catalytic activity. Herein, to increase the piezopotential of N-type piezoelectric semiconductors, the P-N heterojunction is designed to inhibit the piezoelectric screening effect (PSE) and increase electron utilization efficiency to enhance nanozyme activity. P-type Cu x O nanoparticles are in situ grown on N-type piezoelectric Bi 2 MoO 6 (BMO) nanoflakes (NFs) to construct heterostructured Cu x O@BMO by interface engineering. Cu x O deposition leads to lattice distortion of BMO NFs to improve piezoelectric response, and the strong interface electric field (IEF) suppresses PSE and increases piezopotential. The nonlocal piezopotential, local IEF, and glutathione (GSH) inoculation enhances electron−hole separation and increases peroxidase (POD)-like activity of BMO and GSH oxidase (GSHOx)-like activity of Cu x O with high selectivity. The heterojunction formation causes the transfer and rearrangement of interface electrons, and the increased piezopotential accelerates electron transfer at interfaces with bacteria, thus increasing the production of reactive oxidative species and interfering with adenosine triphosphate synthesis. The heterostructured nanozymes produce abundant intracellular ·OH and achieve 4log magnitude reductions in viable bacteria and effective biofilm dispersion. This study elucidates integral mechanisms of nanozyme and acoustic catalysis and opens up a new way to synergize high piezopotential and nanozyme-catalyzed therapy.

Highly sensitive, wide-pressure and low-frequency characterized pressure sensor based on piezoresistive-piezoelectric coupling effects in porous wood

Jingjing Luo,Feihua Liu,Ao Yin,Xue Qi,Jiang Liu,Zhongqi Ren,Shiqiang Zhou,Yuxin Wang,Yang Ye,Qingzhi Ma,Junjun Zhu,Kang Li,Chen Zhang,Weiwei Zhao,Suzhu Yu,Jun Wei

Lightweight and highly compressible materials have received considerable attention in flexible pressure sensing devices. In this study, a series of porous woods (PWs) are produced by chemical removal of lignin and hemicellulose from natural wood by tuning treatment time from 0 to 15 h and extra oxidation through H 2 O 2 . The prepared PWs with apparent densities varying from 95.9 to 46.16 mg/cm 3 tend to form a wave-shaped interwoven structure with improved compressibility (up to 91.89 % strain under 100 kPa). The sensor assembled from PW with treatment time of 12 h (PW-12) exhibits the optimal piezoresistive-piezoelectric coupling sensing properties. For the piezoresistive properties, it has high stress sensitivity of 15.14 kPa −1 , covering a wide linear working pressure range of 0.06–100 kPa. For its piezoelectric potential, PW-12 shows a sensitivity of 0.443 V·kPa −1 with ultralow frequency detection as low as 0.0028 Hz, and good cyclability over 60,000 cycles under 0.41 Hz. The nature-derived all-wood pressure sensor shows obvious superiority in the flexibility for power supply requirement. More importantly, it presents fully decoupled signals without cross-talks in the dual-sensing functionality. Sensor like this is capable of monitoring various dynamic human motions, making it an extremely promising candidate for the next generation artificial intelligence products.

Piezoelectric hydrogel for treatment of periodontitis through bioenergetic activation

Xin Liu,Xingyi Wan,Baiyan Sui,Quanhong Hu,Zhirong Liu,Tingting Ding,Jiao Zhao,Yuxiao Chen,Zhong Lin Wang,Linlin Li

The impaired differentiation ability of resident cells and disordered immune microenvironment in periodontitis pose a huge challenge for bone regeneration. Herein, we construct a piezoelectric hydrogel to rescue the impaired osteogenic capability and rebuild the regenerative immune microenvironment through bioenergetic activation. Under local mechanical stress, the piezoelectric hydrogel generated piezopotential that initiates osteogenic differentiation of inflammatory periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) via modulating energy metabolism and promoting adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis. Moreover, it also reshapes an anti-inflammatory and pro-regenerative niche through switching M1 macrophages to the M2 phenotype. The synergy of tilapia gelatin and piezoelectric stimulation enhances in situ regeneration in periodontal inflammatory defects of rats. These findings pave a new pathway for treating periodontitis and other immune-related bone defects through piezoelectric stimulation-enabled energy metabolism modulation and immunomodulation.

Wearable Magnetoelectric Stimulation for Chronic Wound Healing by Electrospun CoFe2O4@CTAB/PVDF Dressings

Qi Ke,Xinyi Zhang,Yuan Yang,Qi Chen,Jianyu Su,Youhong Tang,Liming Fang

Magnetoelectric stimulation is a promising therapy for various disorders due to its high efficacy and safety. To explore its potential in chronic skin wound treatment, we developed a magnetoelectric dressing, CFO@CTAB/PVDF (CCP), by electrospinning cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-modified CoFe2O4 (CFO) particles with polyvinylidene fluoride. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) serves as a dispersion surfactant for CFO, with its quaternary ammonium cations imparting antibacterial and hydrophilic properties to the dressing. Electrospinning polarizes polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) molecules and forms a fibrous membrane with flexibility and breathability. With a wearable electromagnetic induction device, a dynamic magnetic field is established to induce magnetostrictive deformation of CFO nanoparticles. Consequently, a piezoelectric potential is generated on the surface of PVDF nanofibers to enhance the endogenous electrical field in the wound, achieving a cascade coupling of electric–magnetic–mechanical–electric effects. Bacteria and cell cultures show that 2% CTAB effectively balances antibacterial property and fibroblast activity. Under dynamic magnetoelectric stimulation, the CCP dressing demonstrates significant upregulation of TGF-β, FGF, and VEGF, promoting L929 cell adhesion and proliferation. Moreover, it facilitates the healing of diabetic rat skin wounds infected with Staphylococcus aureus within 2 weeks. Histological and molecular biology evaluations confirm the anti-inflammatory effect of CTAB and the accelerated formation of collagen and vessel by electrical stimulation. This work provides insights into the application of magnetoelectric stimulation in the healing of chronic wounds.
