The repair of osteoporotic bone defects remains inadequately addressed, primarily due to a disruption in bone homeostasis, characterized by insufficient bone formation and excessive bone resorption. Current research either focuses on promoting bone formation or inhibiting bone resorption, however, the bone repair efficacy of these single-target therapeutic strategies is limited. Herein, a “two-way regulation” bone homeostasis strategy is proposed utilizing piezoelectric composite membranes (DAT/KS), capable of simultaneously regulating osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis, with high piezoelectric performance, good biocompatibility, and excellent degradability, to promote bone regeneration under osteoporotic conditions. The DAT/KS membrane under ultrasound (US) treatment enables the controlled modulation of piezoelectric stimulation and the release of saikosaponin D (SSD), which promotes osteogenic differentiation while simultaneously inhibiting osteoclast differentiation and function, thereby effectively restoring bone homeostasis and enhancing osteoporotic bone repair. Mechanistic insights reveal the promotion of both canonical and non-canonical Wnt signaling in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), which determines their osteogenic differentiation fate, and the downregulation of the NF-κB signaling in bone marrow mononuclear macrophages (BMMs). This study presents optimized sono-piezoelectric biomaterials capable of bidirectionally regulating both osteogenic and osteoclastic differentiation, providing a new potential therapeutic approach for pathological bone injuries.

The wide-spread micropollutants in water have posed severe risks to human health and eco-environment. However, the current treatment techniques generally suffer from low efficiency, high cost and unpractical application feasibility. In this study, a piezoelectric membrane was fabricated by embedding zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with several micrometer length into polytetrafluoroethylene nanofiber membrane and applied for the removal of carbamazepine (CBZ) from water. After the sintering, the prepared membrane showed a narrower pore size distribution with the average pore size of ∼1.7 µm. The addition of ZnO nanorods could significantly improve the piezoelectric property of the membrane. During the membrane filtration, the peroxymonosulfate could be effectively activated by the prepared piezoelectric membrane with 2 % ZnO dosage to generate free radicals, achieving about 83.1 % of CBZ from water. According to the radical quenching tests and electron spin-resonance analysis, the hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical, singlet oxygen and superoxide radical greatly participated in the CBZ removal. The CBZ removal efficiency in the US/PMS/PTFE@ZnO-2 system was decreased by 18.2 % after continuous 5-cycle operation, but the performance could be easily renewed by methanol rinsing, demonstrating its attractive reusability and application potential on the efficient removal of micropollutants from water.

A biomaterial-mediated immune response is a critical factor to determine the cell fate as well as the tissue-regenerative outcome. Although piezoelectric-membranes have attracted considerable interest in the field of guided bone regeneration thanks to their biomimetic electroactivity, the influence of their different surface-charge polarities on the immune-osteogenic microenvironment remains obscure. The present study aimed at investigating the interaction between piezoelectric poly (vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene) [P (VDF-TrFE)] membranes with different surface polarities (negative or positive) and macrophage response, as well as their subsequent influence on osteogenesis from an immunomodulating perspective. Specifically, the morphology, wettability, crystal phase, piezoelectric performance, and surface potential of the synthetic P (VDF-TrFE) samples were systematically characterized. In addition, RAW 264.7 macrophages were seeded onto differently charged P (VDF-TrFE) surfaces, and the culture supernatants were used to supplement cultures of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) on the corresponding P (VDF-TrFE) surfaces. Our results revealed that oppositely charged surfaces had different abilities in modulating the macrophage-immune-osteogenic microenvironment. Negatively charged P (VDF-TrFE), characterized by the highest macrophage elongation effect, induced a switch in the phenotype of macrophages from M0 (inactivated) to M2 (anti-inflammatory), thus promoting the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs by releasing anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Interestingly, positively charged P (VDF-TrFE) possessed pro-inflammatory properties to induce an M1 (pro-inflammatory) macrophage-dominated reaction, without compromising the subsequent osteogenesis as expected. In conclusion, these findings highlighted the distinct modulatory effect of piezoelectric-P (VDF-TrFE) membranes on the macrophage phenotype, inflammatory reaction, and consequent immune-osteogenic microenvironment depending on their surface-charge polarity. This study provides significant insight into the design of effective immunoregulatory materials for the guided bone regeneration application.

Membrane separation technology has emerged as a cornerstone for water purification due to its high separation efficiency, energy efficiency, and minimal environmental footprint. However, membrane fouling remains a critical challenge to its sustainable application, increasing energy consumption and operational costs. This study introduces a self-triggered polytetrafluoroethylenezeolite/imidazole framework-8 (PTFE@ZIF-8) composite membrane, capable of autonomous antifouling and enhanced separation by harnessing inherent flow energy to generate piezoelectric voltage oscillations and demonstrate piezo-catalytic activity. The enhanced piezoelectricity of the PTFE@ZIF-8 membrane resulted in superior antifouling capacity and significantly enhanced rejection performance compared to the pristine PTFE membrane. Detailed characterization and simulation studies revealed that the self-triggered piezoelectric voltage oscillations induced dielectrophoresis, which played a pivotal role in fouling control and separation enhancement. Additionally, the in situ generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during filtration further contributed to the antifouling performance. Increasing feed flow rates further boosted ROS production and piezoelectric outputs, improving separation efficiency without external energy input. This study advances energy-efficient water purification by leveraging flow energy to power antifouling and separation processes, aligning with sustainable resource management goals.

Piezoelectric membranes have attracted increasing attention due to their potential to offer pressure-responsive and electromechanical coupling functionalities in pressure-driven filtrations. Despite demonstrated antifouling effectiveness against model foulants, their practical performance within realistic and integrated treatment processes remains inadequately explored. Herein, a piezoelectric PVDF/GO ultrafiltration membrane (PEM) was fabricated and integrated into an online coagulation–ultrafiltration (C–UF) system to mitigate cake layer fouling. During pressure-driven filtration processes, the PEM not only exhibited a self-powered capability with oscillatory output signals (e.g., ∼0.4 V at 30 kPa), but also demonstrated a tunable and markedly enhanced response under dynamic pressure gradients (e.g., ∼1.1 V with a pressure gradient of 2 kPa/s). Based on these observations, a dynamic-pressure-control (DPC) strategy was developed for real-time regulation of piezoelectric output, adaptively responding to the stage-wise progression of cake fouling. Compared with the control membrane, the PEM under DPC operation exhibited ∼60 % lower irreversible filtration resistance and nearly threefold greater cake porosity. Moreover, implementing the DPC procedure for just 3 min per cycle enabled the PEM to sustain robust self-cleaning performance and enhanced permeate quality throughout a multi-cycle filtration test, achieving ∼50 % lower filtration resistance compared to physical cleaning method. Mechanistic analysis suggested that, under piezoelectric activation, the altered floc deposition dynamics and polarization-induced reorganization may act synergistically to shape both the structure and composition of the cake matrix, thereby inhibiting cake growth and subsequent compaction. This work provides a practical operational guidance for retrofitting PEM technology into existing C–UF systems, representing a viable strategy for advancing the application of piezoelectric membranes.

During bone tissue regeneration, neovascularization is critical, and the formation of a blood supply network is crucial for bone growth stimulation and remodeling. Previous studies suggest that bioelectric signals facilitate the process of angiogenesis. Owing to their biomimetic electroactivity, piezoelectric membranes have garnered substantial interest in the field of guided bone regeneration. Nevertheless, the knowledge of their influence due to varying surface potentials on the progression of angiogenesis remains ambiguous. Therefore, we proposed the preparation of an electroactive material, P(VDF-TrFE), and investigated its effects on the activity and angiogenic functions of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The HUVECs were directly cultured on P(VDF-TrFE) membranes with different surface potentials. Subsequently, cell viability, proliferation, migration, tube formation, and expressions of related factors were assessed through appropriate assays. Our results revealed that the negative surface potential groups exerted differential effects on the modulation of angiogenesis in vitro. The P(VDF-TrFE) membranes with negative surface potential exhibited the greatest effect on cellular behaviors, including proliferation, migration, tube formation, and promotion of angiogenesis by releasing key factors such as VEGF-A and CD31. Overall, these results indicated that the surface potential of piezoelectric P(VDF-TrFE) membranes could exert differential effects on angiogenesis in vitro. We present a novel approach for designing bioactive materials for guided bone regeneration.
