Simultaneous enhancement of axial/transverse compressive strength of aramid fibers by the construction of branched multi-hydrogen bonding sites

Xueyong Deng,Wen Zhai,Chunlin Fan,Longbo Luo,Xiangyang Liu

The terrible compressive strength is a prominent issue that restricts the broad application of organic fibers in multi-dimensional stress scenarios. Traditional strategies focus on enhancing the axial compressive performance of fibers, simultaneously improving the axial and transverse compressive properties of fibers still poses significant challenges. Inspired by the octopus's tentacles that can conduct stress in multiple directions, a novel strategy by constructing branched multi-hydrogen bonding sites structure in aramid fiber was conducted to solve the problem. The branched multi-hydrogen bonding sites constructed on nano-silica (SiO 2 –B) offer excellent dispersibility within the poly( p -phenylene-benzimidazole-terephthalamide) (PBIA) matrix. Composite fibers (PBIA-SiO 2 -B) co-mixed with SiO 2 –B and PBIA were prepared using a solution spinning technique. The results of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveal that the introduction of SiO 2 –B significantly enhances the intermolecular interactions within the composite fibers, and this enhancement mechanism has been elaborately elucidated through molecular simulations. Furthermore, finite element simulations confirmed that the incorporation of branched structure exhibits enhanced stress-bearing capabilities under multi-directional stress and offers outstanding support when subjected to transverse compressive stress compared to linear molecular chains. Hence, compressive property testing revealed that the PBIA-SiO 2 -B composite fibers achieved axial compressive strengths and transverse compressive strengths of 714.3 MPa and 305.8 MPa, respectively, representing increases of 68.8 % and 26.8 % over pure PBIA fibers. Moreover, with the enhancement of transverse compressive strength, the Young's modulus and interfacial shear strength of PBIA-SiO 2 -B fibers were also increased by 7.1 % and 20.9 %, respectively.

Hao Xiong,Anze Shui,Qingliang Shan,Shenghui Zeng,Xiuan Xi,Bin Du

To recycle application of polishing porcelain stoneware tile residues (PPR), foamed ceramics were usually considered as an effective way. In this study, a kind of foamed ceramic was synthesized, simulating the main phase of PPR. The effects of SiO 2 addition on crystalline phase, microstructure, physical properties, thermal conductivity , mechanical performance were systematically investigated, the related mechanism was discussed in detail as well. With the increase of SiO 2 , a large amount of spinel was formed in the foamed ceramics. The results demonstrated that the foamed ceramic with 10 wt% SiO 2 powder, sintered at 1200 °C for 30 min, possesses compressive strength of ~30.6 MPa, thermal conductivity of ~0.43 W*m −1 k −1 , average pore size of ~15 μm and porosity of ~44.1%. A unique structure with gaps in the pore wall of sample containing 10 wt % SiO 2 was found, which gives the foamed ceramics high compressive strength and low thermal conductivity.

Improving Interfacial and Compressive Properties of Aramid by Synchronously Grafting and Crosslinking

Yu Dai,Jiabao Feng,Chenbo Meng,Longbo Luo,Jiaqiang Qin,Xiangyang Liu

Improving compressive strength of aramid and its adhesion to resin is of great significance for its application in reinforcing materials. In this study, a novel method for improving interfacial and compressive properties of aramid fiber is presented. α, α′ -Dichloro-p-xylene (DCX) is utilized as an external crosslinker to modify aramid fiber containing benzimidazole units during the post swelling process. Chloromethyl groups from DCX can react with benzimidazole moieties of the aramid fiber. The reaction can be regarded as crosslinking inside the fiber and grafting on the surface. By controlling the swelling effect of the solvent during modification, bulk crosslinking degree and surface grafting density can be adjusted. Therefore, intermolecular interaction and surface polarity of the aramid fiber can be improved simultaneously. After modification, the compressive strength of the fiber can be enhanced by nearly 100% and interfacial shear strength increases by 37%, while excellent mechanical properties are maintained. Therefore, comprehensive performance of aramid fiber can be improved significantly by synchronously crosslinking and grafting.

Enhanced compressive strength and biocompatibility of porous PVAf/MPC composite scaffolds featuring directional lamellar pore channels

Yufei Tang,Hao Zhang,Yue Qiao,Bo Zhang,Yani Sun,Zixiang Wu,Kang Zhao

Magnesium phosphate bone cement (MPC) is one of the most important candidates for bone implant materials due to its properties such as no need for sintering, self-curing formation, high early compressive strength and rapid degradation. However, traditional methods for creating porous structures for MPC, such as foaming or incorporating degradable materials, often result in closed pores or pores predominantly localized on the surface, severely limiting its comprehensive degradation and effective formation of new bone. In this study, porous MPC scaffolds with directional layered channels were successfully prepared using innovative directional freeze-drying and in situ hydration techniques. The key findings of the study were that the incorporation of degradable acidic PVA staple fibers not only significantly improved the mechanical properties of the porous MPC scaffolds, but also effectively addressed the issue of high alkaline cell toxicity upon degradation. When the fiber content is 3 wt%, the compressive strength of the porous scaffold increases from 4.67 to 8.83 MPa, which was attributed to both the high tensile strength displayed by PVA fibers and the presence of multiple fiber forms within the scaffold. And the acidification of PVA fibers during degradation resulting in a decrease in the pH value of the SBF from 8.93 to 7.67, which reduced the cytotoxicity of the scaffolds. Furthermore, through a 7-day microzone in situ hydration process, the porous MPC scaffold with a Mg/P molar ratio of 1.45:1 transformed into KMgPO 4 ·6H 2 O. The pH value of simulated body fluid (SBF) showed an increasing trend with the rising Mg/P molar ratio following degradation of porous MPC scaffolds. The conclusions of the study showed that the prepared porous PVA f /MPC scaffolds with oriented hierarchical channels exhibit non-cytotoxicity and provide an optimal environment for cell survival and proliferation, and demonstrated great potential applications in the field of biodegradable bone implantation materials.

Sandy soil based foam concrete with ultra-small pore structure through in-situ mechanical frothing

Chengtian Zhu,Biqin Dong,Georgy Lazorenko,Guohao Fang,Yanshuai Wang,Jiandong Zuo

During the manufacturing of foam concrete, conventional chemical and physical foaming methods are still inadequate for regulating and stabilizing the bubble properties. In this work, a one-pot method, denoted as in-situ mechanical frothing, was proposed preparing foam concrete by vigorously stirring the mixture of water, cement, sandy soil, and foaming agent. Sandy soil (SS) was used in the content range of 25–75 % as cement replacement to decrease the binder consumption and reduce costs. The influence of in-situ mechanical frothing technology and SS dosage on the properties of paste rheology, pore structure , compressive strength , and thermal properties was investigated. The results showed that the average pore size of foam concrete prepared by this method is between 45.73 and 74.58 μm. The compressive strength of the formed foam concrete at dry density of 600–1000 kg/cm 3 was 2.78–16.37 MPa, which was 85%–231 % higher than that the standard values. The incorporation of SS resulted in smaller and homogeneous pore structure in foam concrete. Moreover, foam concrete with 25–75 % SS dosage showed 7–40 % decrease in thermal conductivity . The overall analysis showed that the 25–50 % S S-incorporated foam concrete enabled achieving higher standard properties through in-situ mechanical frothing.

Increased expansion ratio, cell density, and compression strength of microcellular poly(lactic acid) foams via lignin graft poly(lactic acid) as a biobased nucleating agent

Qiling Zong,Ailing Xu,Kun Chai,Yanhua Zhang,Yongming Song

Green and renewable foaming poly(lactic acid) (PLA) represents one of the promising developments in PLA materials. This study is the first to use the lignin graft PLA copolymer (LG-g-PLA) to improve the foamability of PLA as a biobased nucleating agent. This agent was synthesized via ring-opening polymerization of lignin and lactide. The effects of LG-g-PLA on cell nucleation induced by the crystallization, rheological behavior, and foamability of PLA were evaluated. Results indicated that LG-g-PLA can improve the crystallization rate and crystallinity of PLA, and play a significant nucleation role in the microcellular foam processing of PLA. LG-g-PLA improved the foam morphology of PLA, obtaining a reduced and uniform cell size as well as increased expansion ratio and cell density. With the addition of 3 wt% LG-g-PLA content, the PLA/LG-g-PLA foams increased the compressive strength 1.6 times than that of neat PLA foams. The improved foaming properties of PLA via a biobased nucleating agent show potential for the production and application of green biodegradable foams.

3D printing of TPMS structural ZnO ceramics with good mechanical properties

Jiaxiong Lu,Peng Dong,Yongtao Zhao,Yan Zhao,Yong Zeng

In this study, ZnO ceramics with two types of TPMS structure (Gyroid structure and Schwartz P structure) were fabricated by 3D printing . The solid content of ZnO ceramics powder was 38 wt%. The solid content of SR454NS Acrylic was 57 wt%. The other components of the slurry were photoinitiator, dispersant and sintering additive. The ZnO ceramics with high densification could be achieved after sintering at 1250 °C for 2 h. The average grain size was 37 μm and the true density of the printed ZnO ceramics was 4.95 g/cm 3 . The shape of printed ZnO ceramics can be controlled and the minimum size of thin rod is 200 μm. The compressive strength for Gyroid structural ZnO ceramic with 55% porosity and the Schwartz P structural ZnO ceramic was approximately 6.87 MPa and 4.02 MPa, respectively. The result shows that the Gyroid structural ZnO ceramics can bear much more deformation than the Schwartz P structure during the compression tests. The TPMS structural ZnO ceramics can be used in the field of sensing and detection in the future.

Novel method for preparation of calcined kaolin intercalation compound-based geopolymer

Lu Zeng,Dan-yang Cao,Yan Xu,Chun-wei Fan,Xiao-qin Peng

This paper introduces a novel method for the preparation of a geopolymer using kaolinite intercalation compound which is calcined at a low temperature and forms a geopolymer by alkaline activation . The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric/Differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Coal-bearing strata kaolin (CSK) mainly consisting of kaolinite and quartz was used to prepare the intercalation compound (CSK-K) with potassium acetate (KAc) and calcined below 400   °C. The calcination temperature and the dosage of KAc were analyzed. The results showed that CSK calcined below 400 °C cannot be alkali-activated to harden and when the dosage of KAc was 30% by mass of CSK, CSK-K calcined between 350   °C and 400   °C can be alkali-activated to form the geopolymer with a high compressive strength around 31   MPa. This was attributed to the formation of metakaolin and geopolymerization which were related to the effect of intercalation reaction and the content of K + . CSK-K calcined at low temperature has great potential as a novel material for the manufacture of geopolymers.

The design of multi flame-retarding elements towards the enhance the flame retardancy and mechanical property of rigid polyurethane foam

Yao Deng,Ying-Ming Li,Wen-Juan Hu,Hang-Ping Fang,De-Yi Wang

Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF), widely utilized as a thermal insulation material, presents considerable fire safety concerns. The combustion of RPUF generates significant heat, which poses serious risks to both human health and the environment. In an effort to improve the flame retardancy of RPUF while preserving its thermal insulation and compressive properties, this research introduced a novel flame retardant, DOPO-AZ, synthesized from 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and 2-aminothiazole (AZ). The incorporation of 17 wt% DOPO-AZ into RPUF resulted in the composite achieving a UL-94 V-0 classification, with the limiting oxygen index (LOI) increasing from 19.5 % to 24 %, and a reduction of 27.9 % in the peak heat release rate (PHRR) compared to pure RPUF. This study successfully enhanced flame retardancy while maintaining the thermal conductivity of RPUF at 0.034 W/(m·K), comparable to that of pure RPUF, and significantly improved its compressive strength by 25.8 %. The synergistic flame-retardant mechanisms of the RPUF/DOPO-AZ 17 composite in both condensed and gas phases were elucidated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy, thereby providing a theoretical basis for the future design of more effective flame-retardant systems.

Novel activation method of waste concrete powder for sustainable clinker-free binder

Aidarus Yonis,Yanchen Oinam,Prabhat Vashistha,Aron Berhanu Degefa,Geta Bekalu Belayneh,Solmoi Park,Sukhoon Pyo

This study investigates the environmental and mechanical implications of incorporating silica fume into lime-activated thermo-mechanically treated waste concrete powder (TMWCP) to develop a sustainable clinker-free binder. The novel activation method involves thermo-mechanical treatment of WCP, followed by lime and calcium formate chemical activation. The results demonstrated that incorporating silica fume enhanced the pozzolanic reactivity , which led to the formation of C–S–H, pore refinement, and a dramatic increase in compressive strength . For instance, the incorporation of 20 % and 25 % silica fume exhibited compressive strength of 46 MPa and 43 MPa after 28 days of curing. The developed clinker-free binder with the addition of 20 % silica fume demonstrated a reduction in mineral resource consumption of 99.3 % and CO 2 emissions of 13 % and 69.3 % compared to the sample without silica fume and ordinary Portland cement , respectively. This study offers a promising avenue for the widespread utilization of WCP as an environmentally friendly clinker-free binder.

Hydration heat and hydration products evolution of PC clinker-C$-CSA cement ternary system containing ZIF-8-based composite phase change materials

Dandan Yan,Min Li,Chunxiang Qian

Phase change materials are used in cementitious materials to reduce the hydration temperature rise and thus inhibit the temperature cracks generation. However, the influence mechanism of phase change materials on the hydration properties of cementitious materials is still unclear. In this study, ZIF-8-based composite phase change materials (CPCM) were added to the Portland cement (PC) clinker-anhydrite (C$)-calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement ternary system (PCCSA) in the form of admixtures. The effects of controlling the phase change temperatures, dosages of CPCM and hydration temperatures on the hydration exothermic characteristics, hydration products and the compressive strength development in the PCCSA composite system were investigated. CPCM addition reduced the hydration exothermic rate and cumulative heat release of the ternary system, especially when the phase change temperature of CPCM was 25.8 ℃, and the larger the dosage, the more obvious the reduction effect. In addition, CPCM did not participate in the hydration reaction of the system, but promoted the formation of CH and AFm. Simultaneously, the compressive strength of the PCCSA system paste containing CPCM decreased due to increased porosity in the paste. Furthermore, elevated hydration temperature significantly improved the hydration rate of the system, while reduced the hydration degree, and the hydration products types of the system were not affected by the hydration temperatures. This study results are fundamental for predicting the hydration behavior of cement systems containing CPCM and promoting the application of composite phase change materials in cementitious materials.
