Due to the portability, good flexibility and excellent sensing performance, flexible piezoresistive sensors have received great attention in the field of transient electronic skin, intelligent robots and human-machine interaction. However, achieving both high sensitivity and wide sensing range by low-cost and large-scale method still remains a key challenge for developing high performance piezoresistive sensors. Here, a flexible and highly sensitive piezoresistive sensor was designed and realized by combining the 2D MXene material with wrinkle structure. The MXene composite based sensor with wrinkle structure was fabricated by spraying the active material onto the surface of a pre-stretched polyacrylate tape, which is facile, efficient and low-cost. The MXene composite based sensor demonstrates high sensitivity (148.26 kPa −1 ), wide pressure range (up to 16 kPa), short response time (120 ms) and excellent durability (>13000 cycles). Moreover, benefiting from the extraordinary sensing performance and flexibility, the sensor can detect human physiological signals, monitor intelligent robot postures and map spatial pressure distributions, thus exhibiting great potential in physiological analysis systems, humanoid robotics and biomedical prostheses.

Flexible sensors using crack-sensitive structures have garnered significant interest due to their exceptional sensitivity stemming from crack disconnection and reconnection mechanisms. However, studies on the sensor’s crack size is imperative, as cracks are typically regarded as defective or harmful in real-life applications. In this study, a new multi-layer configuration (PDMS/Ecoflex)/CNT/PET/(PDMS/Ecoflex) is employed to fabricate piezoresistive pressure sensors with reduced crack size labelled crack free, demonstrating extensive linearity and exceptional sensor responsiveness. The crack size on the conductive layer was significantly reduced using Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) cationic surfactant . PDMS/Ecoflex (PE) blend matrix was shown to have an outstanding mechanical and tribological properties compared to PDMS and Ecoflex alone achieving flexibility of up to 500 %, decreasing friction by 56 %, and enhancing wear resistance. The crack-free sensors exhibited a linearity of 0.99, high sensitivity (GF = 132), and low response time (19 ms). Furthermore, crack-free pressure sensors exhibit distinct characteristics such as low detection limits, rapid response/recovery, negligible hysteresis, excellent dynamic response (over 1000 cycles), and exceptional long-term durability. the cracked-free sensor was compared to a standard crack-based sensor to analyze the crack appearance and mechanism on the overall performance and application including health monitoring and various body movement detection.

Fabric-based piezoresistive sensors have demonstrated great potential in human motion and health detection applications. However, the conductive polymers of sensing units are easily influenced by high humidity and sweat conditions, which result in real-time electrical resistance fluctuation, and ultimately sensing inaccuracy. Herein, a hydrophobic, non-fluoride, titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TiO2-ODI)-modified fabric-based piezoresistive sensor was firstly employed to obtain accurate pressure sensing by prohibiting the interference from both high humidity and droplets in daily life. Due to the prominent isolation effect of the dense TiO2-ODI nanoparticle layer, for the first time, the dynamic normalized electrical resistance changes in a fabric-based piezoresistive sensor were negligibly influenced by high humidity of 95% and droplets of water, saline, milk, and sweat. Compared with the original pressure sensor (S = 0.85 kPa−1), the introduction of TiO2-ODI almost did not sacrifice the sensing performance (S = 0.83 kPa−1) and displayed prominent resistance to sweat interference. Thus, the hydrophobic TiO2-ODI pressure sensor exhibits promising potential and wide applicability for preparing highly accurate fabric structural piezoresistive sensors with wearing comfort, large area, self-cleaning property, ultraviolet protection, and anti-interference of high humidity and sweaty conditions, such as accurately evaluating human motion during exercise or on a rainy day.

With the rapid development of flexible electronics, the functional elastomer with excellent mechanical properties as substrate for the preparation of high-performance piezoresistive pressure sensor has become one of the frontier research hotspots. Here, a tough and self-healing linear polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer with multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions was synthesized, and then utilized as substrate to prepare piezoresistive pressure sensor with 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone modified carbon nanotubes (UPy-CNTs) as conductive material and salt particles as sacrificial template to construct electrical pathways and ridge-like microstructure, respectively. The obtained elastomer showed high transmittance of above 90 % and excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of 4.23 MPa, elongation at break of 984 % and toughness of 24.83 MJ m -3 . With the exchange and reconstruction of multiple hydrogen bonds, the elastomer achieved high healing efficiency of 99.1 % after healing at 80 °C for 24 h. In addition, the elastomer-based piezoresistive pressure sensor exhibited high sensitivity of 2.04 kPa -1 , wide sensing range of 0–450 kPa, short response/recovery time of 80/100 ms and excellent sensing repeatability (8000 loading-unloading cycles). The sensor was successfully applied for detecting various human motions, including finger and knee bending, exhalation, swallowing and heart-pulse, and realized remote transmission of pressure signals with a wireless monitoring circuit. Furthermore, the sensor could restore its sensing function even after being cut into two halves, showing great potential in the fields of wearable device, health monitoring and electronic skin.

Piezoresistive metamaterials fabricated via 3D printing have gained increasing attention due to their high flexibility and stability, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. However, conventional isotropic and planar designs of these metamaterials restrict their sensing capabilities to uniaxial detection, significantly limiting practical utility. In this study, a 3D piezoresistive metamaterial inspired by the 3D structure of dendrites beneath human skin, achieving multidirectional and multifunctional sensing capabilities is presented by controlling the distribution of different lattice micro cell types. These anisotropic piezoresistive metamaterials can be successfully fabricated by one-step digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. When integrated with augmented reality (AR) systems, these customizable metamaterials enable seamless object interaction workflows encompassing 3D spatial localization, capture, and recognition through real-time virtual feedback. Furthermore, a digital twin system is implemented to enhance real-time visual feedback in AR and deliver an immersive operating experience for the user. This synergistic combination of anisotropic design and one-step 3D printing establishes a novel paradigm for developing metamaterials with multifunctional, multiregional, and multidirectional sensing capabilities.

High-performance flexible pressure sensors provide comprehensive tactile perception and are applied in human activity monitoring, soft robotics, medical treatment, and human-computer interface. However, these flexible pressure sensors require extensive nano-architectural design and complicated manufacturing and are time-consuming. Herein, a highly sensitive, flexible piezoresistive tactile sensor is designed and fabricated, consisting of three main parts: the randomly distributed microstructure on T-ZnOw/PDMS film as a top substrate, multilayer Ti 3 C 2 -MXene film as an intermediate conductive filler, and the few-layer Ti 3 C 2 -MXene nanosheet-based interdigital electrodes as the bottom substrate. The MXene-based piezoresistive sensor with randomly distributed microstructure exhibits a high sensitivity over a broad pressure range (less than 10 kPa for 175 kPa −1 ) and possesses an out-standing permanence of up to 5000 cycles. Moreover, a 16-pixel sensor array is designed, and its potential applications in visualizing pressure distribution and an example of tactile feedback are demonstrated. This fully sprayed MXene-based pressure sensor, with high sensitivity and excellent durability, can be widely used in, electronic skin, intelligent robots, and many other emerging technologies.

With the development of the internet of things (IoT) and the rise of the concept of the internet of everything, wearable sensor devices are booming as mobile terminals and have a huge market value. However, the fabrication of nanofiber membrane-based pressure sensors with special microstructures remains a significant challenge. In this study, template-assisted electrospinning was used to fabricate microhemispherical thermoplastic polyurethane (TT) nanofiber membranes. The preparation of MXene@CNTs/TT (MCTT) nanofiber membranes was conducted via the ultrasound-assisted dip-coating method, utilizing MXene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as composite conductive materials. Subsequently, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) encapsulation was employed to prepare PDMS-MCTT conductive nanofiber membranes. Utilizing an aligned assembly strategy based on the microhemispherical structure, the PDMS-MCTT bilayer pressure sensor exhibits high sensitivity (Smax = 471.3 kPa–1), wide pressure range (0–521.6 kPa), low detection limit (0.003 kPa), fast response time (7 and 8 ms) and reliable cycling performance (3000 cycles). In addition, the sensor offers excellent breathability and hydrophobicity (contact angle of 132.7°). Usefulness of the sensor in detecting body signals highlights its potential for motion detection and health monitoring.

The rapid development of wearable electronics, humanoid robots, and artificial intelligence requires sensors to sensitively and stably detect external stress variations in large areas or on three-dimensional (3D) irregularly shaped surfaces while possessing the comfort. Most importantly, the flexibility and 3D compliance of sensors, and the fitting state of the interface between the sensor and the object are of great significance to the sensing accuracy and reliability. The ordered or random stacking and entangling of flexible and electrically conductive fiber materials can form a highly porous and mechanically stable fiber assembly. The changes in external stress can lead to the air trapped in the fiber assembly to flow in and out rapidly and repeatedly, as well as the reversible mechanical deformation of fiber materials. Correspondingly, the contact areas between electrically conductive fibers in the fiber assembly are reversibly changed, which makes the conductive and flexible fiber assembly be an ideal candidate for piezoresistive sensing material. It can be further expected that the statistical stability of contact points between conductive fibers under the stress may significantly increase with the decrease in fiber diameters. Herein, a new method to make a flexible piezoresistive sensor with conductive and porous fiber assembly was proposed. An ultrasensitive piezoresistive material was facilely prepared by fabricating conductive poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofiber assemblies. The sensing performance of the piezoresistive sensor was optimized by regulating the nanofiber morphology, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties. The flexible piezoresistive sensor exhibited a sensitivity of 2.79 kPa–1, a response time of 3 ms, and a recovery time of 10 ms. The sensing performance at different working frequencies was stable and durable within 4500 cycling tests. The flexible sensor showed good pressure-sensing accuracy and reliability when used on irregular surfaces and therefore was further applied in the static monitoring of large-area spatial pressure distribution and the wearable intelligent interactive device, demonstrating great application potential.

Wearable piezoresistive sensors have great potential in motion monitoring, health detection, and virtual reality. However, such sensors have difficulty maintaining long-term and stable sensing performance in complicated conditions such as wetting, corrosion and without external power supply. Herein, we integrated a stable wearable piezoresistance sensor (SWPS) with sandwich-like laminated structure, which consists of a flexible superhydrophobic conductive material, a rigid superhydrophobic material, conductive coil and magnetic composite materials which is used to provide magnetic field. SWPS achieves simultaneously effective pressure sensing and self-power supply. Importantly, such sensor maintains outstanding superhydrophobicity even when exposed to mechanical or chemical damage, such as cyclic compression, impact and wetting erosion, ensuring the reliable and long-lasting sensing performance. Our design strategy could also guide the development of other wearable sensor materials that need to retain long-term sensing performance in harsh operating conditions.

Polypyrrole (PPy) is a good candidate material for piezoresistive pressure sensors owing to its excellent electrical conductivity and good biocompatibility. However, it remains challenging to fabricate PPy-based flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors with high sensitivity because of the intrinsic rigidity and brittleness of the film composed of dense PPy particles. Here, a rational structure, that is, 3D-conductive and elastic topological film composed of coaxial nanofiber networks, is reported to dramatically improve the sensitivity of flexible PPy-based sensors. The film is prepared through surface modification of electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers by polydopamine (PDA), in order to homogeneously deposit PPy particles on the nanofiber networks with strong interfacial adhesion (PVDF/PDA/PPy, PPP). This unique structure has a high surface area and abundant contact sites, leading to superb sensitivity against a subtle pressure. The as-developed piezoresistive pressure sensor delivers a low limit of detection (0.9 Pa), high sensitivity (139.9 kPa–1), fast response (22 ms), good cycling stability (over 10,000 cycles), and reliability, thereby showing a promising value for applications in the fields of health monitoring and artificial intelligence.

Recent years have seen a rapid development of electronic skin for wearable devices, autonomous robotics, and human–machine interaction. As a result, the demand for flexible pressure sensors as the critical sensing element in electronic skin is also increasing. These sensors need to feature high sensitivity, short response time, low detection limit, and so on. In this paper, inspired from the cobweb in nature, we propose a piezoresistive pressure sensor by forming a cobweb-like network made of a zinc octaethylphorphyrin (ZnOEP)/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid on an array of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microposts. The hybrid material exhibits excellent adhesion to PDMS, benefitting from ZnOEP’s low Young’s modulus and the nonpolar bonding between ZnOEP and PDMS such that no delamination and resistance variation are found after thousands of cycles of bending and twisting. With the overhanging morphology of the ZnOEP/CNT network on the micropost array, we realized a pressure sensor with an ultrahigh sensitivity of 39.4 kPa–1, a super-fast response time of 3 ms, a low detection limit of 10 Pa, and a reproducible response without degradation after 5000 cycles of pressure loading/unloading. The sensor can be employed for a variety of applications, including wrist pulse measurement, sound level detection, mechanical vibration monitoring, etc., proving its great potential for use in electronic skin systems.

The rapid development of flexible electronics and artificial intelligence brings an urgent demand for high-performance flexible pressure sensors. In this paper, a method is proposed to prepare wrinkled graphene foam by freeze-drying and post-annealing method, where zinc chloride is used to tune structure. A piezoresistive pressure sensor based on the wrinkled graphene foam is assembled. Benefiting from the unique contact interface of wrinkled microstructures, as well as the mechanical strength and the superior resilience of the foam structure, the piezoresistive pressure sensor exhibits a reliable stability (>10 5 cycles), short response time(150 ms)and low relaxation time (120 ms). And it also demonstrates good performances in various applications, such as pulse detection, voice recognition as well as the finger joints movement. It is suggested that the pressure sensor based on wrinkled graphene foam has great potential in flexible electronics to achieve health monitoring and motion detection. It also paves the way for other wrinkled materials to be involved in the fabrication of pressure sensors.
